IC cheating in relationships can be met with a wide variety of reactions. Of course, there may be IC reactions: the person your "friend" cheats on might have friends who will light you on fire for your misdeeds. Other characters might express a wide variety of opinions like "wow, I wasn't expecting that" to "did you read what happened to so-and-so in the Headliner"? (That's our school paper! If your "friend" is plotting a romantic cheat, please get in contact so we can spill the tea!) People who don't the kids involved might react with bemused amusement! Colin: "Whoa! Like. Total first year drama! That's so cuwute!!!"

On a more serious note, we also have to recognise that behind every character here is a real person, and we have had instances where fictional drama leaks out into RL backlash. This is definitely not pleasant for the RL victim of the drama. The best thing to do, looking back on these kinds of situations, is to find willing partners and plan! This kind of plot can be very exciting to follow, very engaging to write, and potentially explosive IC and OOC!
