Character Backstory: Quinten Wentworth Gainsborough V was born and raised in Yeovil, Somerset, as the youngest of five children in a comfortable, upper-middle-class family. His father, Quinten Wentworth Gainsborough IV, works as an aerospace engineer at Leonardo S.p.A., while his mother, Ralphina Geraldine Gainsborough, née Bishop, teaches at Oaklands Community Primary School. Quinten has four older siblings: Jefferson Francis who is thirteen, Guildenstern Christopher who is fifteen, Stacy Penelope who is seventeen, and Leonard Forbes who is twenty. Quinten has a loving relationship with his family, but growing up surrounded by accomplished siblings has left him with some rather large shoes to fill.

Quinten's eldest brother, Leonard, attends the University of Cambridge where he studies engineering, while Stacy has distinguished herself as the captain of a successful local under-18 girls' football team, and Guildenstern is an accomplished young musician participating in the National Youth Orchestra's Inspire programme. Jefferson shares his father's enthusiasm for engineering, already demonstrating considerable ability in mathematics and science, and Quinten also hopes to become an engineer someday, though he has yet to acquire any great achievements to the same extent as his siblings.

Quinten has grown up attending Oaklands Community Primary School where he has made numerous friends, most notably Sylvester Stainton who is his best friend, and outside of school, much of Quinten's childhood has been spent playing with friends, exploring the local countryside, or participating in sports. He joined the Pen Mill Football Club at a young age where he developed a particularly competitive attitude, and later took up archery, initially practising under his father's supervision, before joining the Yeo Bowmen. Outside of sports and other outdoor activities with his friends, Quinten also enjoys occasional fishing trips and other fun activities with his father and siblings.

Although his family has exhibited no known magical ancestry, Quinten's otherwise ordinary childhood took an unexpected turn shortly before he was due to begin attending Westfield Academy: A Hogwarts professor arrived at the Gainsborough's home in order to inform Quinten that he had been accepted into the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, thus revealing the existence of a magical world of which neither Quinten, nor his family had any knowledge of. The revelation came as a considerable surprise to the Gainsboroughs, particularly to Quinten, who suddenly found himself faced with the prospect of leaving behind his friends, familiar surroundings, and longstanding ambitions in order to pursue an education unlike anything he had previously imagined.

First Instance of Magic: 15 October, 2022 - Saturday

It had been a cloudy day in Yeovil, with rain expected later that day, but seven-year-old Quinten and his teammates on the Pen Mill Football Club were nonetheless, very excited for their upcoming match against the Tintinhull Youth Football Club. Unfortunately for Pen Mill, the match did not go very well for, and while Quinten's teammates were usually quite good at keeping possession of the ball and ensuring it stayed in the opposition's half of the pitch, today, their coordination seemed nonexistent. Despite Quinten's best efforts to at communicating with his team such that they would win the match, the opposing side repeatedly broke through their defence and managed to score multiple goals, ending the match in a nasty defeat of 4-1 for Pen Mill.

When the final whistle blew, rain had already been falling for a few minutes, and Quinten was in a particularly foul mood. He was furious with his teammates for what he considered an entirely avoidable defeat, and began yelling at them as he blamed their poor coordination for that day's loss. The argument (a few of the boys were defending themselves) had lasted for nearly a minute, with Quinten growing increasingly angry such that even his coach stepped in and told him to calm down, when a loud cracking sound was suddenly heard from a nearby tree, following which one of its branches broke off and crashed onto the ground some distance away from the children.

The unexpected noise startled everyone and prompted the coaches to usher everyone into shelter and away from the bad weather, and because there was nothing particularly unusual about the falling branch given the storm brewing outside, the fact that it was Quinten's first manifestation of accidental magic as a result of his intense anger was completely unbeknownst to everyone present.

Character Special Race/Talent: Parselmouth
Reducio
My special talent is Parselmouth. As a pure-blood Slytherin, I come from a family with a long and complicated magical heritage. Both of my parents are, according to them, "extremely distant" descendants of Salazar Slytherin himself, and they possess the rare ability to speak Parselmouth, the language of serpents. Growing up, I was surrounded by expectations of excellence, discipline, and control. My parents were strict about my education and upbringing, believing that knowledge and self-discipline were essential to success. Although their rules often made my life feel painfully ordinary, their influence taught me to be observant, ambitious, and calculating. I learned early that intelligence could be just as powerful as physical strength, and that true mastery required patience and determination. My magical talent reflects these qualities perfectly. Like a serpent, I prefer to observe my surroundings before acting, waiting for the right moment to strike rather than wasting energy on unnecessary confrontations. I am especially fascinated by Parselmouth because it connects me to my family's ancestry and the legacy of Salazar Slytherin. Although I have much to learn about the language, I hope to develop my abilities until communicating with serpents becomes as natural to me as speaking to another person. My family's magical lineage may have influenced my natural potential, but I know that ancestry alone cannot make me exceptional. I must work tirelessly to refine whatever gifts I possess. Ultimately, my special talent represents more than inherited magic; it embodies my ambition, cunning, and unwavering desire to forge my own path while honoring my family's legacy. Growing up, my parents always told me to keep our ability to speak to snakes as a secret. However, they would try to teach me how to say some things, like how I have to imagine an image of a snake in my mind, and I would be able to blurt out one or two words. Some words that I have been able to say are "greetings", "My name is Su", and "get out". Despite my small successes, speaking Parselmouth remains a difficult and unpredictable process. I just remember what my parents have taught me: "picture a serpent, imagine its scales, its movements, and the way its tongue flickers as it tastes the air". This way, the words slips out before I even realize I am speaking. For now, I keep this ability hidden, as I know that historically, witches and wizards look down upon us Parselmouths due to its dark past and complicated reputation in the wizarding world. However, upon entering Hogwarts, I hope to meet other witches and wizards who are also Parselmouths so that I can converse with them and continue to develop my natural talent. I am determined to turn this rare inheritance into a skill that is truly my own. I hope this ability becomes one of my greatest strengths, as I know it is a part of who I am. I am a Slytherin, after all, and I have every intention of discovering just how far my abilities can take me.

I come from a pure-blood family. I am an only child, and growing up without siblings left me wishing for someone who could understand me, challenge me, or simply keep me company. The house was quiet, the rules were numerous, and my days followed the same predictable routine: wake up, attend school, work, return home, study, and repeat. There was little room for spontaneity, and even less room for disobedience.

My parents were strict, particularly when it came to my education. They expected excellent grades, discipline, and good behavior, and I learned early that disappointing them was not an option. In many ways, their strictness kept me out of trouble. I grew up cautious and well-behaved, never once breaking a bone or finding myself in any serious physical danger. Still, safety came at a cost. I often felt as though I was watching life from behind a window, following every rule while wondering what it would be like to step outside and experience something extraordinary.

I was never content to spend my entire life sitting behind a desk, however. I wanted to move, compete, and test the limits of what my body could do. Sports appealed to me because they rewarded discipline, precision, and determination. Of all the possibilities, one captured my imagination more than anything else: Quidditch.

The idea of soaring through the air on a broomstick, racing past opponents, and competing at the highest level was intoxicating. I dreamed of becoming a professional Quidditch player, earning my place among the best through skill and relentless practice. Unfortunately, my father would never even allow me near a broomstick. To him, it was dangerous and unnecessary. To me, it was another example of how my life was being decided for me.

But Quidditch was only one part of my ambition.

There was another subject that fascinated me, one that was far less acceptable to speak about openly: the Dark Arts. While others might recoil at the thought, I was drawn to the power, complexity, and forbidden knowledge surrounding dark magic. I wanted to understand magic in all its forms, including the parts that others feared or refused to study. To me, knowledge itself was not something to be feared. What mattered was understanding it, mastering it, and possessing the discipline to decide how it should be used.

I did not necessarily wish to become cruel or evil. Rather, I wanted to become powerful enough that nobody could dictate my future or make me feel helpless again. I wanted the freedom to choose my own path, to prove that I was capable of more than the ordinary life my parents had planned for me.

For years, magic existed only in stories and distant possibilities. I had no reason to believe I was anything other than an ordinary girl with extraordinary ambitions. That changed when I was eight years old.

When I was 8, I got out of a pool, I was instantly dry. I found this weird. Is this enough evidence?

Character Backstory: Evelyn was born on the cloudy day of 13 August 2015 to her parents- Daniel Blackwood and Nisha Blackwood (maiden name: Nisha Singh), who had a love marriage in 2010. As her full name: Evelyn Tara Blackwood; suggests, the girl was exposed to two very different cultures since the day she was born. Even the marriage of her parents was held two times! First time it was according to the English culture, and second time it was according to the Indian culture. Indeed her whole family and extended family were muggles, which resulted that Evelyn was a muggle-born. Her mother works as a history teacher in a muggle school, while her father works as a neurologist (a branch of muggle doctors where they study the human brain) in a renowned hospital of Harlow. Evelyn and her parents resides in a neighbourhood of Harlow, England, where they were spending a happy and peaceful life. Evelyn was an only child of her parents, which meant she spent most of her time with them before she was sent to the same muggle school where her mother is a teacher. She made muggle friends, studied muggle subjects and developed an interest in playing badminton (a muggle sport) and learning more about the outer space and history. However, both her parents and Evelyn were oblivious to the fact that she posses magic...real magic, and beyond the hustle-bustle of muggle world, there is a world which is filled of wands, brooms which can fly, and magic!
On her 11th birthday, along with her birthday presents and birthday cards, arrived a letter which made Evelyn and her parents think that its a prank of one of the girl's friends. The letter was quite different looking from the birthday cards, and the weird part? It was delivered to the house by an owl! When the letter was open, Evelyn came to know that according to it, she was a witch cand was accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Along with it came a 'supply list'. At first glance the Blackwoods thought that its just a well-rehearsed prank, but who would make a school's intricate symbol, make a whole supply-list with the names of shops and where to find them? Finally after some time the confusion was cleared and the family got to know that the letter, the school, the shops, and magic...all were real! And now, Evelyn was ready to start a new and the first magical chapter of her life; to learn real magic at Hogwarts!

Character Special Race/Talent: Veela

Reducio
The Veela lineage of Anelia can be traced in her family for several generations, a lineage in which the blood of Veela had always been perceived as an integral part of their heritage. The heritage of Anelia had been passed from generation to generation and included not only unique beauty and innate grace but also the awareness that it comes with certain responsibilities. For Anelia’s family, the heritage of Veela was never just an appearance and admiration. It was something that required respect and certain amount of maturity to treat it with. There was always more in her ancestry that could be seen with eyes of other people, and it was all about the way she treated her heritage.

There was always something special about Anelia from the earliest years, and it did not concern just her appearance. She had unique elegance in her that was inseparable from her nature, and graceful manners, and unique appearance that could never fail to attract attention. But as she grew up, she started to realize that some of this attention was not necessarily about how she was as a person; some people would be charmed even before getting to know her properly, while others were captivated by the idea of something that they thought they knew without really knowing her.

This was because of her family background. Anelia was well-aware of the fact that Veela charm, both subtle and blatant, might affect the perception of people around her, which is why she learned to deal with this part of herself with the mind of a realist rather than that of an egotist. She did not think that she was doing great things by becoming the center of attention or that she was any better than those who did not have her Veela heritage. Instead, she realized that although beauty might change people's first impression of you, it can never guarantee love, trust, or respect. These are things that need to be gained from inside out.

As Anelia grew up, she started realizing the difference between admiration and understanding. While this attention can feel flattering due to the allure of her Veela bloodline, it can also raise doubts whether her acquaintances are interested in the real her or simply attracted by her unique features. She came to realize that those people are most precious to her who take the trouble to find out what kind of thoughts, aspirations and flaws she has instead of contenting themselves with their idealized image of her. She became aware that she should cherish sincere relationships and evaluate her acquaintances wisely rather than let herself be impressed by their admiration.

At the same time, Anelia is not inclined to hide or disown her Veela ancestry. It is an integral part of her identity and of the history of her family and its future. She understands the need to know more about her inherited abilities and their possible effect on other people, for she feels responsible for her lineage. Instead of letting her ancestry predetermine her, she tries to cultivate her identity independently from all those expectations. In conclusion, Anelia’s Veela lineage stands as both a link between her heritage and her future as well. She accepts what is special about her lineage without defining herself by them. As far as Anelia is concerned, what makes her a Veela goes beyond the power to turn heads. She sees the grace and awareness inherent in her Veela powers as what makes her unique and a Veela. While her family history may make an impact on how others see her, it is her own individuality that determines the impression she will leave.

Character Backstory:
Reducio
The family D'Aveline is a branch of the famous Chinese wizarding clan Shen. Some fifty years before Anelia was born, the clan moved to Scotland and changed their name to D'Aveline so as not to face any racism in the British wizarding community. While they changed their name officially, the fact that they belong to a Chinese family is still their private family secret. The D'Avelines are rich aristocrats with inheritance, magnificent estates, and an impressive family history. The values of their family have always been traditional for Gryffindor, although for Anelia they became something different. As the only heiress of that generation, Anelia grew up in a privileged, controlled, and demanding environment. Since childhood, her parents attached great value to her education and wanted their daughter to be able and knowledgeable enough to live up to the family name in the future. Their education was rather comfortable, but at the same time, very strict. They provided their daughter with all kinds of opportunities to get an excellent education and demanded her to succeed in it. However, affection and approval depended on their ability to meet parental expectations. As Anelia grew older, her parents made the suggestion of marriage for the sake of her future. But she rejected the suggestion since she wanted to make decisions about her life by herself. Such behavior strained their relationship; now Anelia is emotionally and socially isolated from her family. However, being the only heiress to her father's title, she continued receiving financial support for her education. Despite whatever their relationship was, Anelia's parents never stopped providing for her education which was so important for her future. Lucien is a calm, meticulous individual who holds that education, discipline, and competence are important to uphold the family’s status. He hardly shows any sign of affection, choosing to express his care through provision and assistance. He wishes to see Anelia grow up as a competent heir despite the cost to him personally. Seraphina is an astute lady whose elegance hides intense strength. Her concern about Anelia’s future stems from the belief that one can only be secure if they make proper decisions. She can show affection, but the demands she makes often limit her daughter’s chance to disobey. Anelia’s education is of paramount importance in her life going forward. Her family has high expectations for their heir, but she wants to learn enough to carve out her own path. In Hogwarts, she will try to capitalize on her academic success and show that she has the skills to decide where she will go in life. Also, she is of the Veela origin and belongs to the family with a mixed heritage. Being raised in an aristocratic family yet feeling like she does not belong according to conventional pure-blood traditions has affected her relationship with her family and her environment. Anelia also knows that one of her distant cousins will be attending Hogwarts, a tiny bit of familiarity in such an uncertain time of starting anew. Prior to attending Hogwarts, Anelia studied at another school and became known there because of her outstanding scholastic abilities. She was ambitious and disciplined and could quickly comprehend anything hard. She had built up her reputation based on her academic successes. The confidence and preparation she had from the previous school will serve her well now. Hogwarts is an entirely different place where she can continue building up her skills and gaining an education all on her own terms.

Her first act of magic took place on a calm night when she was sitting by herself in her bedroom. She held her grandmother’s broken necklace and wished that the necklace be made whole. In a flash, she noticed golden sparks flying around her fingertips. The necklace levitated and the broken chain fixed itself.

She exclaimed in amazement while looking at her hands. The books from her shelf were levitating, flowers were growing in an empty vase, and there was a blue glow filling the room. Terrified, she said, “Stop!” Everything came back to normal instantly.

She understood that something amazing had stirred up inside of her.
