“Robin! You know what we need to do? We need to build your hottie tolerance! All you have to do is ask someone good-looking to dance. Easy, right?” Odette really must pat herself on the back this time. This has to be one of her most brilliant plans to date and best of all, it’s positively foolproof! After all, who doesn’t like dan–

“Dance! Me!?” Robin choked on her drink, staring at Odette in wide-eyed terror as if the mere thought of the tiniest shuffle or sway would make her sprout feathers on her skin and grow goat hooves on her feet.

…Perhaps, the blue-eyed witch made a… teensy-weensy, itty-bitty miscalculation. A quaffle drops in Odette’s stomach as she realizes Robin’s worries are much more serious than she realized. Clearly, it’s not as foolproof as she first assumed. Merlin, she’s a terrible friend! To have suggested something so cavalier, so insensitive, so–

“Just pulling you on, butt.” Robin teases, her look of horror vanishing with each giggle thrown in the half-blood’s face. Odette all but collapses on the table in relief, her head resting inches from their empty plates. How could she have fallen for the oldest trick in the book? It’s so obvious, yet the moment she saw her friend’s fearful gaze, all rational thoughts flew out the window. Side-eyeing Robin’s mirth, Odette can’t help but think– “That was absolutely brilliant!

Snorting with amusement, the blue-eyed witch sags into the back of her chair. Shoulders shaking from her snickers and fanning the embarrassed flush from her cheeks, Odette laughs along with the curly-haired jokester. Sniggering even harder when Robin stands up and announces, “Let’s go dance, then!”

Surely, the fellow Ravenclaw is having her for a laugh again. She’s supposed to ask someone she finds threateningly attractive to dance, not Odette! Apparently, the young entrepreneur must have used up all her brain cells on making sales earlier because when Robin grabs her wrist and drags her onto the dance floor, she realizes all too late how serious her friend is. As the saying goes, ‘Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me…’ and sweet Circe, if she’s not about to look like a fool.

Odette is a terrible dancer. Whenever she tries, the atrocity on legs winds up looking like someone's great-aunt trying to waltz through a swamp while suffering from gout in both feet. It’s no surprise, really. Her family is not the most musically or rhythmically inclined. The Leones all prefer supporting artists gifted in song or dance rather than defiling it with their croaky, out-of-tune demonic harmonies and pathetic shimmies.

“Dance with me, hottie!” Robin exclaims gleefully, dancing around Odette in circles without missing a beat. Rubbing salt into the gaping wound.

“Honestly, you should just hit me with the dancing-feet spell. It will look loads better than the crime you’re about to witness.” Odette jests lightheartedly.

Watching Robin effortlessly swing to the rhythm of the catchy Celtic Folk song, the blue-eyed first-year wishes she had practiced more with Everley when they’d dance in the rolling fields behind their homes. The muggle’s movements were always smooth as silk and as swift as the cool autumn breeze, a graceful enigma that Odette could never copy, no matter how much she tried. Thinking back and remembering how their laughter would echo across the meadows reminds the dancing troll just how much fun they’d have together, even if she sucked.

Throwing caution to the wind, Odette begins dancing to her heart's content. Smiling with Robin at every stiff hip swivel and robotic arm…something. Honestly, what are you supposed to do with your arms while dancing? It doesn’t matter. It wouldn’t improve her moves anyway.

Just as the song switches to something with a jaunty tempo, Odette furrows her brows as she realizes the Great Hall is steadily growing dim. The beguiling fairy lights are quickly becoming enshrouded in dark stormy clouds that are quite literally– wiping a drop of water from her face– raining on their parade. Looking around, Odette notices a few other students discovering the brewing rain above them and begins plotting on how she can capitalize profit benefit help the finely dressed witches and wizards stay dry.

Mentally berating herself for leaving her rainy-day products in her dorm, Odette turns to Robin, ready to share her plan, when she catches sight of her friend twirling in carefree delight. Whatever the self-proclaimed businesswoman is about to say gets stuck on the tip of her tongue. For once, she doesn’t hear her mom’s reminder to 'make friends, not customers.' Instead, Odette is already thinking about how dancing with Robin seems much more fun than schmoozing random students that she doesn’t even care about for a few galleons.

Perhaps, just this once, business can come second.

After all, she had already made a killing before the soiree. No need to be greedy.

“Y’know, I think I’m really starting to get good at dancing!” Odette smirks sarcastically and wiggles her eyebrows playfully as rain splashes against her, “Tell me, Robin. Are my enchanting hip swivels bewitching you with my veela-like charm?”

Momentarily enjoying her chosen drink and fortunately not succumbing to the fate of whatever potion the stranger threw into the drinks, Meiyu briefly scanned the hall around her, noting the vast faculty who chaperoned the event and contemplated whether she should say something. It would take mere seconds for her to quickly deduce that it simply was not worth the hassle. And as tempting it would be to watch things later unfold, the overall atmosphere of the hall, as enticing as it was, quickly appeared tedious for the young girl. There were far too many people, many of whom engrossed in conversations with one-another whilst she idly stood by, loitering near the assortments of foods and drinks.

Quickly diverting her attention back to the array of foods, she immediately scowled at selection available. Typically, the food served within the castle during meal times were somewhat enjoyable to her, picking at fruits within her vicinity during every meal. Though, it was nothing like the grand meals she'd have at home, this selection on the other-hand, appeared almost pathetic, far worse than the dreadful Gala of Mysteries, which only angered her at the mere thought of the night and the wasted opportunity that followed in it's suite. It was commendable that the organisers aimed to encompass a true medieval theme — prevalent by the posters which cascaded the castle's stone walls. Leaning closer, Meiyu moved slowly along the table, scanning in detail the assortment available for this evening, scoffing a small laugh at the sight of a bowl consisting of raw potatoes. "This is not even fit for a King." Meiyu whispered to herself, lightly shaking her head in disapproval and turning once more to face the crowd.

The Spring Soirée marked her second school ball this year, the second one she'd attend alone. Merely the consequences of her own actions, tirelessly resenting herself for her failure of assimilation amongst first years. Besides, Meiyu was not one to be subjective to others, despite her firm beliefs that the girls, with the exception of her dearest Evpraksiya and pretty roommate Ula, were at times, more pleasant to be around in comparison to the troll like creatures who stomp around the castle; likely to be Armani distant relatives, given their entire family consisted of hideous children, most notably their youngest Troll. Narrowing her eyes, searching for a poor soul to target and torment as she had done in the previous ball, Meiyu failed to find a subject willing to experience her terror. Should she have arrived with a date, perhaps she'd find the experience more enjoyable, but there were two things to note.

Firstly, Meiyu's secret adoration for the Victorian era was an infatuation she hid better than her obsession with the snake she had grown to feel adoration towards, yet, to her dismay, those feelings refused to lay dormant. In essence, Medieval history was not exactly a special interest she cared for, it was far too out-dated for her and the fashion choices of that time period were... questionable, not to her liking.

Secondly, there would not be a single soul she would wish to subject to the terror that was being her date to a school ball. Not only was the idea extremely embarrassing for her to be seen with such a hideous creature, the idea would present herself with a bigger issue she wished to avoid — her grandmother. If the stars were ever to align and Meiyu were to succumb to sickness once more and find herself linked arms with a man, she would merely beg a stranger to cast Incendio on her. A chill ran down her spine at the thought, she brazenly moved away from the table, towards the door, escaping to anywhere but the Soirée.

The redheaded couple in front of her seemed busy, lost in their own little world as @Winnie Harper typically tended to be whenever her fiancé was around. Aly pulled a half-frown at the matter - she couldn't say she wasn't still worried about her friend's mental state, even here, surrounded by opulence and grandeur and the world at their feet - but she also didn't want to risk an already fragile situation by butting into whatever they had going on between the two of them. Sighing, the brunette turned away, the fact that @Mathias Pride had not even given her a courtesy glance or greeting not lost on her. So much for rising in the court of her opinion.

Still, the soirée had grown more crowded since first spotting the matching pair of auburns, and Aly had just barely taken a step away from the fifth-year duo when she heard her name shouted quite loudly over the din of chattering children. She spun in place, whirling with the gauzy fabric of her skirt twisting and fluttering lightly around her legs, her keen eyes darting about, taking in every face, every slope of every nose, every pair of close-knit or wide-set eyes, scanning countenances for familiarity. Who yelled that? Who called me? Luckily, she didn't have to look for long, for once she found the magic mirror of the night, it was clear who had been trying to get her attention. Of course, it was no mirror, but a similarly curly-haired beauty, short of stature and pale of face, in an equally stunning green butterfly dress - they could have been twins, if it weren't for the difference in lock colour and the wings and antennae sprouting from the other girl's back and head. Aly did a double-take as she recognised, for the first time since leaving Beauxbatons in February, one of her Valentine's Day event cabinmates: Greta, the princess of Durmstrang, with her prince in tow, of course. (@Evelynn Decipio) They had endured plenty of jokes about being the blonde and brunette versions of each other since meeting a few months before in France, even leaning into it somewhat with sharing hairstyles, beauty tips and tricks, and accessories while being cabinmates, and now here they were - two months later, in almost the exact same gown.

She burst out laughing and ran, dodging first-years in the throng of people, to hug her.

"Greta! Oh, it's so good to see you," wrapping her arms around the green-clad blonde as she blurted out a happy greeting. "I can't believe we're matching! It's like France all over again." Looping her arm through the Norwegian's own so that they locked elbows, she cast an appreciative glance at Felix, then muttered into Greta's ear so that the tall boy could not hear: "How did you convince him to dress up like a moth? I'd have thought Sir Grumpy would have put a wing cape on only when puffskeins flew. But you two look great together, as always."

Before Greta could reply, a rumble of thunder shook the hall; at first, Aly didn't think anything of it - perhaps it was raining outside, though it sucked for Manu, her pen-pal from Castelobruxo who had dropped her off here before stating her plans to head off to the outdoor Garden of Eden area of the soirée. But then, a drop of rain on her shoulder, and Aly's head jerked upwards - the enchanted ceiling wasn't supposed to actually leak! Alas, it seemed that some idiot had decided to bring the storm indoors to quite literally rain on their parade, and now an angry cumulonimbus had taken residence above them, blocking out the fairy lights' ethereal glow and dripping on the light fabric of her gown. Aly's eyes narrowed. Oh, hell, no. I borrowed this from Winnie - I am not returning it with water stains!

Her wand appeared from seemingly nowhere (everyone say thank you, pockets!) and upwards its tip pointed as she cast "Meteolojinx Recanto!" at the party-crasher of a thunderstorm above them. Hopefully, she'd get the damn thing sorted before her gown was ruined by the rain.

Mikey gently squeezed Avery’s hand in return, matching her smile with one of his own. It amazed him how natural this felt. Before he could say anything a low rumble overhead made him glance up. His easy smile shifted into a slight frown as the lights dimmed, replaced by the heavy shadow of a swirling storm cloud overhead. Droplets of rain began to fall, speckling the dance floor and the heads of the students around them. The once cheerful atmosphere was quickly becoming something darker.

Rather than let the sudden weather dampen their mood, he offered his hand again, giving her a playful little bow. "Come on. Let’s find your cousin before we need a boat." They weaved carefully through the crowd, dodging clusters of students who were either laughing, running for cover, or pulling out wands to counter the cloud overhead. Mikey kept close to Avery, shielding her a little instinctively when a splash of rain fell nearby.

He caught sight of a boy standing near the side of the room. He was pretty sure it was Dylan but he wanted to be sure. Mikey leaned toward Avery, his voice low. "Is that him?" At her nod, he smiled and straightened up stepping forward with her. "Hi," Mikey said reaching out his hand to Averys cousin as they approached. Mikey's blue eyes were bright despite the gloom gathering above them. "I'm Mikey" he finished his introduction realizing this was by far the strangest first impression of his life.

Dylan smiled as he watched his cousin dance with whoever she was with. He hadn't been able to hear the boy's name, but he seemed like a great guy for her. It was the first time he had ever seen Avery acting like this. He knew immediately what he would do when she got back. He just hoped no one else would overhear. Avery would kill him. Though, for a good laugh, it was worth the risk.

When Avery and her new friend came over, Dylan smiled again. Even though he was a lot quieter than Avery, he was always open to making a new friend. Especially since Avery's friends at Hogwarts sounded amazing. He wished he could be there with her, but of course he couldn't. It was still too dangerous according to his mother. What that meant, Dylan didn't know.

"Hi. I'm Dylan as you probably already know." Dylan responded with a smile still on his face as he shook the boy he now knew as Mikey's hand.

Dylan smiled when he glanced down and noticed Avery was still holding hands with Mikey. Now would be the perfect time to get in a little tease. He smirked at Avery before saying in Welsh, "Edrych fel bod rhywun wir yn hoffi ei ffrind newydd, neu ydy ffrind ddim yn ddigon?" Looks like someone really likes her new friend, or is friend not enough? Dylan began to laugh a little. Avery's reaction was going to be priceless.

"Sorry about that. Every once in awhile I just have to get out a good joke." Dylan said to Mikey as he continued to smirk at Avery.

Avery laughed a little at Mikey's comment of meeting Dylan before they needed a boat. Honestly, she had been so interested in getting to know Mikey that she hadn't even realized that storm clouds had gathered until a rain drop hit the bridge of her nose.

As they made their way through the crowds, Avery searched for her cousin until she spotted familiar black hair and piercing blue eyes smiling at her. She blushed a little and knew exactly what he was thinking. All she had to do was wait and see. Hopefully he wouldn't embarrass her too much. But, with her luck, she probably wouldn't be that lucky.

The second she heard the Welsh words coming out of Dylan's mouth, she began to blush. Once he had finished with a smirk on his face, she gently slapped his arm before saying, "O ddifrif?"Seriously? She began to blush even more than she already was. A flash of red creeping up her already warm face. Though, the rain wasn't really helping her be warm. It was as if the water left a slight chill in her. Avery paid no mind to the chill. She was way too invested in how this ball was turning out!

The Spring Soirée Spring Ball 2025
Mikey couldn’t help but laugh lightly at the quick exchange between Avery and Dylan. Even though he didn’t understand the Welsh words, I really need to learn some Welsh he thought, but he understood the teasing tone perfectly. Family was the same everywhere. Poking fun just enough to embarrass but never to hurt. It reminded him of home and brought a smile to his face.

He caught Avery’s blush and the way she swatted Dylan’s arm, and his smile softened. There was something warm and real about all of it, even with the rain falling and the thunder grumbling in the distance. Once again he had that feeling of comfort wash over him, like the rest of the world didn't matter. All he had was this moment and he was determined to live in it.

Still holding Avery’s hand without even thinking about it, Mikey glanced between the two of them, his blue eyes bright with amusement. "I'm guessing I should be glad I didn’t catch all of that." Mikey said playfully then turned his attention to the gathering storm above them. "Is this a normal thing at these soiree parties or should we be concerned?" His tone remained confident and happy but his thoughts were leaning more and more to the side of caution.

While scanning the Great Hall Mikey thought he noticed Avery shiver slightly. He had to mentally kick himself for not realizing earlier that she was standing in the strange indoor rain without a coat. Mikey released her hand and removed his jacket. He did his best to wipe off the drops that were running down it but it was already slightly damp. "Here take my coat," he said while putting it over her shoulders.

Avery laughed a little at Mikey's comment before saying, "Yeah. You're pretty lucky. Let's just say that it was pretty embarrassing and I hope no one else was able to understand in." Avery still smiled though. She knew Dylan was only teasing because he cared, and what he
said. . . well it made Avery think. She did really enjoy Mikey's company. Maybe they could be more someday. Avery would just have to wait and find out.

Avery shrugged when he asked if they should be concerned about the rain. "I actually have no idea. I missed out on the fall ball, so I'm not really sure what to expect. Though, I'm not surprised that they have some tricks up their sleeves. I remember at the Tea Party in France that some drinks were spiked with love potion."

"Are you sure? What about you?" Avery asked as she allowed Mikey's coat to be draped around her shoulders. She felt bad for borrowing his coat. If he ever needed it back, Avery knew she would give it back. She didn't want to cause him to get a cold right before Spring Break! That would be terrible! Avery glanced up again at the mysterious clouds. Who made these and what is their purpose? She thought to herself as she watched the dark swirling ceiling.

As Avery pulled his coat tighter around her, Mikey shook his head softly, reassured. “I’ll be fine,” he said, brushing a wet lock of hair from his forehead. “It’s not that cold, and besides, I’d rather you be warm than worry about me catching a cold. Chivalry’s not dead, just damp.” Keeping the conversation and his tone light in spite of the strange weather indoors.

He glanced upward again. The enchanted storm cloud was still brooding above the hall with cracks of thunder echoing randomly. A few ambitious upperclassmen were hurling countercharms at the ceiling and Mikey’s eyes caught a girl in green by the dance floor who seemed generally angry at the clouds and he made a mental note to thank her if they actually cleared.

But just as Mikey was beginning to relax again, a sudden thought struck him. His eyes widened slightly. “Oh no,” he muttered under his breath, glancing down at Avery. “I… I just remembered. I promised I’d meet some friends outside in the Garden of Eden area." Remembering Lucy, Dev and Bree were expecting him after he got something to drink. That seemed like hours ago now and it might have just been the indoor storm but he really didn't feel like he needed something to drink anymore.

His expression was sheepish but sincere. “I didn’t mean to lose track of time. It’s just, well, I was kind of distracted.” He smiled at her, meaningfully. “But I should check on them. I won’t be long, I promise.” He reached for her hand one last time, squeezing it gently. "Keep my coat until I get back." He then turned to Dylan and said "It was great to meet you and I'm excited to get to know you better." With a final grin Mikey gave a playful bow and turned toward the archway leading outside, moving quickly but carefully through the gathering crowd, rain still glinting off his hair as he disappeared into the evening.

Dylan smiled as he watched Mikey and Avery interact. They were so cute together. It was as if he was watching a rom com play out before his own eyes. He couldn't wait to see what would happen next.

Dylan waved to Mikey as he headed toward the garden to tell his friends where he was. "See you soon! I too look forward to getting to know you better!" Dylan smiled before turning his attention to Avery.

"So. . . I never thought you would be the romantic type. You guys are cute together." He commented with another smirk on his face. He was having way too much fun teasing her about this. Though, deep down, he just wanted his cousin to be happy. She had looked so sad recently and Dylan had no idea why. He just hoped she would tell him soon. She couldn't bear that alone.

Dylan glanced around the room as he waited for Avery to respond. Though, he knew exactly what she was going to say without her even saying it. He also knew that this was probably even more embarrassing than what he had said in Welsh since anyone that spoke English which was probably everyone could hear what he said.
