A question (or two(or three)): What does it mean when a character's avatar turns into the default one (like the grey silhouette with the wizard hat and their name is replaced by Ancien sorcier?
And what does it mean when a user just randomly disappears along with all their posts?
And what does it mean when their avatar disappears, but their name remains but their profile is just gone? Like if you click on their name or profile, nothing happens.

1) their account has been hard deleted, which happens when a minor's parents contacts an admin and asks for their child's account to be removed
2) same as 1
3) their account has been soft-deleted, meaning that they themselves have asked for it to be deleted, usually so they can move accounts. All the info is still kept though

What Lucia said it's correct. You can read more details about it in this thread [Accio]. It pretty much means that their account got deleted or banned.
