Aurelia Valentine wrote: 28 May 2025, 22:51 Is it normal that your workplace sometimes delay your breaks - to the point I have lost my appetite to eat my packed lunch - just because they need more manpower? Is that normal, does it apply to any type of work? They sometimes don't let us go to the restroom for this exact reason and my co-worker told me that she thought she only have a fever... after further tests the doctor told her that her UTI came back. This company does not cover our medical exams and laboratory tests so it is real expensive.
It's not "normal", but it does happen. If you're a nurse or fire fighter, yeah you might not get a pee break right when you think it's most convenient; but a good manager will do their best to make sure people have sufficient breaks when they're needed and if the circumstances allow.

If your workplace is an office or something, then there's really no excuse.

Depending on where you live and the nature of the business, they may not cover or even be able to cover medical expenses. You might need to get creative. Hopefully this isn't a long term situation for you and you'll end up with a better job before too long!

But definitely look after yourself! Unless you're prepared for fasting, be sure to try to eat when you're able!

Darn, I always wonder if this is illegal or something. These companies always choose to overwork their employees instead of constantly hiring. Good for them that I don't have time to do a deep research about laws that surrounds labor, or else they would be getting a love letter from me. These crocodiles literally have breaks on time and so adamant on giving us overtime. Whenever we argue back about these things, their argument always consists of, “well, we are overworked so you should too,” what? I hate my job.

Adulting can be hard. :(

Ugh, that does not sound like a good sentiment for a manager to have. *snugs* it’s never good for morale, too. Do what’s best for you. <3

Not sure if this is any consolation but last year (as some people on here might already know!) I was constantly switched between locations and added/removed constantly from timesheets and schedules. The people hiring claimed there "wasn't enough work".

But now this year, my supervisor said "we really need more student workers" (which I am a part of) and I just thought it was so cheeky and karmic of her to say. This was the same supervisor that told me "nobody wants you" when I came in for work one time last year. That kind of stung for a while when I was already trying my hardest for them as a newbie.

Some people are just not meant to be in the jobs they're in...

They sound a real treat, Auri. Depends on your jurisdiction and what your shift is. If you work a standard 8 hours, you should at the least get an hour for a meal and possibly 15 minutes additional to get something to drink, etc.

Shorter shift means likely a much shorter break. A longer shift will usually mean more breaks.

These are in addition to the "unofficial breaks" that clever workers always find a way of taking!

I remember that from last year. It pained me to read. So many people just don't value honest hard work. And so many managers don't seem to appreciate it.
