All other boards still count, I believe. You'll be able to see your posts (indicated on your profile) go up whenever you post outside of this area. There's a games room area in your house that you could post in, which does count I believe, as well as the out of character chats that might help.

So, in terms of pets, do we have to assume that any pets were bought during one of the holidays in the school year so that you can then say your character brought it back with them to school. If I'm applying to buy a pet now, would it be the case that I say she bought it in the summer holidays, is there any way to say she got it during term time - if that's possible?

you cant buy it in the middle of the year if thats what you mean. You CAN forward date the thread to any time you want, so yes, you can say she got the pet the summer before this year.

Yeah, that’s what I was originally going to do and say she got it during summer, but I thought it would just make more sense for some of the RPs I’ve already done if she got it later. But if there’s no way a student feasibly get a pet during term, it probably doesn’t matter too much.

During the school year it would not be possible except when on break really. But as Juniper said, you can backdate and forward date threads. You would be astonished to see how quickly time moves by. Getting a pet as a Christmas gift for example from your parents is a common option. Another is to claim that you were finally considered 'old enough' or settled in enough at your new school to now bring your pet (insert animal) to school with you and they were just home the first portion of the school year so you could get settled in. Then the RP in the menagerie is getting food or something for the pet. You are free to be somewhat creative.
