Lev was born in a hard-working family. When he was young, he would watch as his family grow potatoes, tomatoes, and many other things in their own little дача. [a seasonal or year-round second home, normally with a big garden to grow crops and food] At around five he started helping, and he loved to do it. Lev had many family members, all living in one house; his parents, grandmother, three siblings, and one half-sibling. It was a lot, but it was fun. In the summer, he would play games, water fights and help grow crops. In the winter, he bought food from the shops, if they did not have any of their own vegetables left, and played in the snow, building snowmen, sliding down on sledges. The snow was a good one too; at least two feet tall, and if you stood on a spot for two long you would sink right down to the floor and soak your wellies.

When he was not at his дача, Lev lived in Petrushino, a small village in Moscow, Russia. He had a large house with a green roof, and he adored it too. Often, his family would go to Novosibirsk, where a couple of his relatives lived. So, between the дача, Petrushino, and Novosibirsk, Lev traveled a lot, but he had a lot of friends wherever he went.

He was a very likable boy, with good manners, and he was especially good at mathematics. In Russia, they took work very seriously, so Lev was very tired after school. Apart from this, he was a gifted musician, and had lessons early in the morning when it was still dark. After piano lessons, he had school, and left school so exhausted that he would always be ready to fall right asleep.

Lev loved his family, and the days he spent there every day. He had never wanted any more - well, until his letter from Koldostvoretz arrived.

All of Lev's family were muggles, (apart from his grandad, but he never knew this) and so it was a real surprise when he had his first incident of magic. It all happened like this.

At the age of almost ten, Lev was walking to school from his piano lesson one day, when the sun had just came up and was very warming against the cold breeze (it was mid-winter). When he entered the class, he remembered that he had forgotten his homework. He couldn't dash right out of the classroom to do it; his teacher would be suspicious! All he could do was wait and face the concequences. He got really agitated; his teacher hated when he didn't hand something in on time. He supposed, when he looked back on this moment, that it was because he was so nervous that his magic worked. He handed her a blank page, screwing his eyes shut. Then the teacher eyed it, scratching her neck.
"Молодец," she commented with a raised eyebrow (which means 'well done' in Russian) and handed it back to him. He was sure it was sarcasm... before he saw the page was full of algebra, written in his tiny, curly handwriting. Lev gasped, hoping his teacher didn't notice.

Lev Afanasyev had always, without thinking, been able to change his appearance. Not fully; he could not turn into a small cute girl whenever he liked! And it wasn't even at will; his body just did very small changes, so small that nobody, including himself, noticed. Lev only really realized this when he was drawing himself for an 'end of year student report' in year 5. He drew his bright blue eyes carefully, coloring every detail, his brown hair, and saved it to look at once he was older. Next year, in Year 6, once again he had to draw himself. His eyes were blue-grey, and he quite distinctly remembered coloring them in one color last year. Oh, perhaps I was just young. I couldn't really color them in two colors, maybe I thought one sufficed? And so, carefully, he drew in pale blue, then over it in grey. Grey-blue eyes.

But that was not what made Lev notice this. Nor was it that at the start of Year 3, his hair was golden brown, and now black. No, it was the photo album he found. It was quite by accident; his mother asked his to get a bucket from the attic, wash it, then fill it with water from a nearby non salt-water lake so that she could make some delicious soup. (This was Lev's favorite meal). He did as he was told, but tripped in the loft/attic because it was dark. He had wondered what it had been that tripped him up, and dusted off an old photo album. Smiling slightly at his findings, Lev took the bucket and went downstairs.

Once he had brought the water and had eaten his fill off soup, Lev settled in a corner of the couch to have a good look at the album. It was his family, when they were younger, and Lev was only a toddler. This Lev, however, had bright green eyes and golden-blonde hair. Lev gasped. He looked in the mirror; his dark brown, almost black hair was nothing like this. Then, suddenly, he remembered the time when the barber had made a mistake and made Lev an awful haircut, and at night Lev shut his eyes really hard and prayed it to be back to normal. When he woke up the next day, he found that it was indeed back to normal.

Then he put the album away, daring to try it himself. He imagined himself a posh, handsome person with brown eyes and blonde hair. He saw the image clearly in his head, exactly what he wanted to look like. Opening his eyes, he dashed to the mirror, excited. But he was exactly the same. Sighing, Lev went back to the sofa. But then his mother came in and exclaimed "Your eyes! Why are they brown?!" (In Russian obviously) so he ran to the mirror again, panting, and looked. It was indeed hardly noticeable, but his eyes were brownish. Sort-of. And as Lev grew up, he found that he could slowly make the changes more and more noticeable, and bigger. When Lev received his Koldostvoretz invitation, he was sure that it was to do with being a wizard, but when he asked his roommates whether they could change appearance at will, they all said no, surprised.

When Lev looked back on all of this, he realized that it had been going on for a lot longer than he had realized. Even as a baby, small changes had been happening to his looks. Now, as he grew up, bigger changes were starting to happen too, but only if he wanted.

If special race/ability, how did they join the school? Lev had never showed off with his ability, nor had he really shown anybody. Sometimes, various people had guessed that something was up, but no one directly asked him. He joined in his first year, so finished primary in 2024, and joined Koldostvoretz in Sept 2024.
