It was heating up in here!

There was so much going on and Hiro was literally on the edge of his seat the whole time, looking everywhere.

Or at least he was trying to. The poor boy didn't have enough sets of eyes to drink in everything that was going on around him. From the very start, Akira had been doing well, holding himself together and presenting the perfect picture to those watching them. But of course, Hiro was one of the few who knew Akira felt pressured into being this way and didn't do it of his own accord. Still, results were everything, and Hiro could only hope that Akira would emerge victorious in the end. Even if it looked as if Mahoutokoro was ahead, anything could happen before the end.

They needed to never let their guard down and always be ready in case the impossible tried to happen.

Only then, with a little bit of luck on their side, could they successfully craft a victory from the other foreign school against them. Up until this point, both sides had gotten hurt but that was to be expected, what had yet to come was the first KO. The only question was who would it be? Mahoutokoro, Ilvermorny or both? Hiro was putting his money on the latter. And then it happened. A series of events. Akira healed Hadashi from his wounds, Sara tried to defend Aryaan, Chikao saved Hadashi from an incoming attack and it almost seemed as if the two were about to bond a bit.

Before Hadashi's attention was diverted again. And the first person to be taken out in this task was Rook Jamie from the opposite side. As time passed, three more people got taken out, two of them being from Ilvermorny and one from Mahoutokoro. They were still doing well, although Chikao had gotten eliminated from the game. Their first loss. But it wasn't bad because they'd taken out three of Ilvermorny's players, whereas only one of their own had been sacrificed in return. It was a shame Chikao had perished but at least he'd managed to do some good within the game.

Not that his initial performance before the game would be forgotten.

But at least he hadn't made a complete fool of himself out there, that had to count for something, right?

Hiro noticed that Chiaki seemed to be panicking out on the board and he cupped a hand in front of his mouth to yell out to her. "Don't mind! Don't mind! Chi-chan! You're doing good! Keep it up!" The pink haired boy called out to her, hoping to settle her nerves. She should just focus on the game and not worry about what happened when others were taken out. They had healers around for a reason. Most likely, the injured participants would be completely fine later! But now, Chiaki needed to focus on winning the game. For honor, respect and her own safety.

Aryaan seemed to be doing pretty well and Hiro was impressed with him. The boy was doing a good job at representing Mahoutokoro and he was sure those watching would agree. If he could only keep this up until the end, they had a good chance of winning against Ilvermorny. After all, they were currently ahead and if nothing changed the current situation, they would remain ahead of them. As Chikao was taken out, Hiro got up from the bench and headed over to where the staff had dragged his fallen teammate off the chess board. He would take care of him now.

Hiro glanced over him.

To him, it seemed as if Chikao had suffered some kind of head trauma, or possible internal injuries maybe?

He couldn't see many injuries on the outside and earlier Chikao had been seen holding his head as if it had hurt. Therefore, Hiro came to the conclusion his friend might have suffered some kind of head injury. Glancing around, he got a healer to come over and take care of him, as Hiro held Chikao to stabilize him as the healer worked on him. Hiro didn't really know any healing spells, so he was pretty useless at helping others recover from internal injuries. But at least he could help in minor ways. Stabilizing and holding them in place for the healer to work on was helpful.

At least when it came to out here. It didn't seem as if his injuries were that bad though, if facial expressions were anything to go by. Hiro was thankful it didn't seem serious and glanced over at the chess board again.

Christopher was starting to get really frustrated now. He just couldn't hit any of his spells with the book. Was he really that bad a shot? Could his opponents see the Matrix? It was just very disheartening to not hit a single thing. At this point, he doubted he could hit water if he fell out of a boat.

He decided the only thing he could do was try to press on and do what he could for the team. He wasn't going to give up on them. They had to win. Anything less was a failure, simple as, and he refused to be a failure.

He looked at his current situation and found he was really in the thick of it now. He was standing face-to-face with a fellow bishop, and the opposing team's queen was right next to him. Not one to be intimidated by anyone he locked eyes with the bishop.

"So, at last we meet for the first time for the last time." He said as he projected a confidence that, given his situation, might have been a bit false, but he pressed on, not one to show any weakness. "I see your Schwartz is as big as mine." He said as he held up his holy book, "Now let's see how you handle it!"

Once again, it seemed, Narumi saved him. This time though... This time it ended badly.
Hadashi watched as Narumi fell off his horse, evidently hallucinating, and his body slammed against Hadashi.
"Senpai... I'm sorry."
Hadashi checked him over with genuine concern before seeing that there was no emergency, just exhaustion and a few injuries.

"Don't be. You did well, Narumi-san."
While it wasn't accurate; Hadashi was still Narumi's upperclassman, He felt like 'san' was appropriate here.

He stood back up and looked at Elowyn with the kind of stare that would chill anyone. It would seem that, in slaying the Oni, they had awoken a wrathful Kami.

"You have just made a serious mistake, boy. A very STUPID. Mistake."

Hadashi posed menacingly. "I am Queen Hadashi! Bow before my divinity!"
A black miasma erupted from his dress, engulfing the area around him. He watched as Elowyn dropped, unconscious. Vengeance achieved.

"OOOOOOH ho ho ho! You broke already? Hmph. Cheap toy."

If the Americans wanted an antagonist, they just got one.

Stephen remembered, too late, that when Moses and the Israelites had been battling the Amalekites, the tides would only turn in their favor when he would hold both of his arms up, in supplication, to the LORD. When his arms would go down, the tides would turn against them on the battlefield. The battle raged on for hours. Moses was an old man. Standing for hours with his arms up in the air would be impossible for him, so he needed help. Aaron and someone Stephen could not recall right then would hold his arms up for him. There was a beauty in that story to Stephen. He loved the teamwork. Knowing it was not possible to go it alone.

Stephen looked at the carnage on the field. It was devastating. Now his buddy Louca was gone, too, but not before he boosted Rett one last time. Stephen looked to Louca and a resolve burned within. If he thought too much on them, he would be useless to his team and their sacrifices would have been in vain. Same with Elowen. He wielded the mighty blow that took down the black giant of a Rook before he, himself, sucumbed to the black Queen's Rebuke.

The black knights had closed in uncomfortably close to Miles, however. To his credit, Miles looked cool as a cucumber. It was not over yet, but it was looking particularly dicey. The only good news was that their opponent's King was being pressed, too, but it certainly seemed that the advantage was clearly favoring Mahoutokoro.

As he was scanning the battlefield and knowing what must be done next in the next melee round, he took another moment to look into the stands. It still tickled the back of his brain that Headmaster Plott was nowhere to be seen. Where was he? It was probably just as well he wasn't here, but this was decidedly out of character for the man. Then, of course, the concessionaires caught his attention, too. This whole thing, from start to finish, was just plain wrong.

Much to his shock, Stephen himself had taken a powerful hit, but he was still standing. At least for now. It was a shock because adrenaline must really have been pumping as he was utterly unaware of it until a few minutes ago. Yet one more thing to compartmentalize and deal with later. He was good at compartmentalizing.

And then he heard the black bishop, now standing directly in front of him, begin a riff from Spaceballs, the movie. Was he serious? And then he looked around one last time. This was the modern day Bread and Circus, wasn't it? It was a distraction for the masses thousands of years ago and it was no less a distraction today. The fellow did not look scared, but that could be bravado. Probably not though. Stephen doubted he looked scared himself. He was not looking forward to getting mowed down if it came to it, but it appeared as if it would happen quickly when it came. Besides, could it be any worse than being knocked off his broom over the summer and plummeting who knew how many stories?

Doubtful.

Deciding that Bishop Chris was the first fellow from the opposing side he seemed like he could relate to, he joined in on the lightheartedness. Why the heck not? What was going to happen was going to happen. Acknowledging his opponent with a polite nod of the head, Stephen said as earnestly as one could when quoting a Mel Brooks character named Yogurt, "Yes, yes. I am the keeper of a greater power, a power known throughout the universe as the..." and he raised his hand and coughed into his robe sleeve while trying to toss his voice as if a third party was questioning him, when uttering, '''the Force?" "—no, the Schwartz," he bellowed. And then he tilted his head to his right while still looking the black Bishop in the eyes.

"Take her for instance, meaning Rett, his own team's Queen. Yeah, he knew he was not a she, but he was dressed like a she and the quote worked better this way. Work with me here, people. "Do not be deceived by her passivity at this time. In a few moment's time we are going to Commence operation—’Vacu-Suck!, and boy howdy I sure hope, to quote another franchise here, that you have your pee pee pants on, because I guarantee you the Schwartz is going to be with us!" And Stephen looked calmly from Chris to Rett and then back to Chris. "I'd sure hate to be the putz in her way when she's gone from suck to blow."

And because he was just naturally a friendly fellow, Stephen met the even gaze of the boy standing across from him and hoped that no matter how this all ended, it was not going to be personal, so he allowed a friendly smile to barely register at the corner of his lips.

"We could make a gentleman's wager if you are interested. Losing bishop buys the other a commemorative and overpriced T-shirt of their choice, and Stephen broke out into his best impersonation of Mel Brooks as Yogurt, which was actually quite good. "Merchandising! Merchandising! Where the real money from the Tournament is made. Hexwizard: the T-shirt, Hexwizard: the blah, blah, blah blah blah... What we really need to hurry this dog and pony show along is Hexwizard: the flame-thrower!"

Now THAT would be a show!

Christopher eyed his fellow bishop suspiciously. He too was clearly a scholar of the classics, and he'd used a lot of material. It was only a second of time but he carefully considered his response in his mind. He would have to come up with something so deviously clever that the boy would be distracted. He quickly counted in his head. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. It just popped into his head, he didn't know why. Then he remembered, he had the same combination on his luggage. How amazing.

All he knew as he looked around was that this certainly wasn't Temple Beth Israel. What's more, the first task was passing at what was, quite frankly, a ludicrous speed. At last, he knew what to say, and he spoke with a malicious undertone, "If you dare to give me the raspberry then so be it, you're on." He said as his eyes narrowed, "But first, it is time you knew the truth... I am your father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate... and do you know what that makes us?" He cackled diabolically as he gave the answer to his own question, "Absolutely nothing! Which is what you are about to become..."

And at last, he understood. The power wasn't in the book, he could've gotten the book out of a box of cracker jacks (albeit with some difficulty). The power had been inside him all along. He tossed the book away to the side of the board and pointed a finger gun (of doom) at Bishop Steve, ready to unleash the full power of... the Schwartz.

It was not sunshine and rainbow back then, and it was not sunshine and rainbows now. With each round, the regret of even coming here in the first place was evident on his face. It was difficult to tell, to be honest, considering the resting state of his face was always anger. A new emotion the crowd could pick off form the usually stiff student is the sweat coming out of his eyes.

Angry crying, more accurately. Like an agitated kid whose trying to appear unfazed whilst pretending the tears from their eyes was just from the dust in the air. “ Aryaan “ his words were as warm as the chillest winter and sharp as blades of grass. “ Do. You. Have. Tissues?
