Flash pat the soil lightly in the pot, he was finished. Willow’s words were wise beyond her years, and she had something that Flash lacked. Self-assurance. Despite the things she didn’t like about her upbringing, she was glad to be who she was. That was so beyond Flash’s grasp he thought she must be lying to herself.

”Heh… you and me, huh?” Flash smiled when he said it, the kind of smile that took no effort at all. ”I think if I grew up with you as a sister, I would have had a lot less to complain about.”

He looked at her as she was looking despondently at the wood of the work bench, recalling the good times and the bad. What we would change, and what we would keep she had said. When Flash tried to think of the things he would keep, they were almost innumerable. Even with his great dissatisfaction in life, he still felt lucky that his family lived on such a huge expanse of land. Just because he felt like an outsider in his family didn’t mean he wasn’t proud to be related to them. Of course he would have liked a simpler life, one with a family who were always there, but that shouldn’t detract from the things he was thankful for.

”You’re right. It’s good to step back and get some perspective sometimes. I feel a little better, honestly.” He wiped away the dirt that had made Willow giggle at his expense. ”And I don’t want to hear that you’ve been bullied. If you’re having problems with anybody, you would tell me, wouldn’t you?”

It always felt good to help people work through some stuff that was going on, even if she didn't know exactly what Flash was upset with. That wasn't really her place to ask outright anyway, especially if he was feeling better. But, she did acknowledge that it could feel really lonely in the huge castle that was Hogwarts. She turned to face him, noting that he was all done with his replanting, and they looked really good. There were a few things she would do different but that was for him to learn through the class rather than her, since she didn't want to seem like a show-off.

When Flash commented on the bullying situation, it hit something inside of her. Someone was offering to stick up for her? While she hadn't been bullied at Hogwarts yet, she thought back to an interaction she had with her friend Elsian when they first met. Him saying that she should be careful who she revealed her muggle magic too, because some people might make fun of her for it. Everyone so far was supportive and interested in it though, but there was still the nagging fear at the back of her head that something might happen at any point. "I haven't been bullied here at all, just back at home by other kids since it's a largely strictly Christian population and they're not a fan of my family of witches. Everyone here has been... nice for the most part. There are always people we might not get along so well with, but it's not been that bad. But I will tell you when it happens." She paused, realizing she had used 'when' instead of 'if'. She was so used to it being part of her life she couldn't imagine it not being part of it. "Uh, if. If it happens here." She looked down embarrassed, before her head shot up after a couple of moments.

Something clicked in her head, and she gasped with delight. "What's stopping us from being brother and sister anyway? My mom always told me that a family is made and chosen rather than forced." She took a second, adjusting how she carried herself to be more of a facade of a caring mother, "Blood is not always thicker than water, sometimes the water carries you further than blood ever will." She dropped the act, smiling fondly as she thought of her family, "While I adore my family and wouldn't change them for anything in the world, I also like the idea of being able to expand it. Maybe someday to have big family gatherings like yours." She looked away, not wanting to see his face if he was totally disgusted with the idea.

Flash was taken aback yet again. He would have to get used to being surprised by her if she insisted on being so interesting. He could feel something stirring inside him as she spoke, the kinds of feelings he usually tried to push away. Someone who wanted to be his relative… It was a novel experience.

Most of his growing life had been about his family: the importance of carrying the name with pride and dignity, the legacy of the family name that one could only dream to live up to. People in his private school would sometimes say they wished they were a member of the Holmwood family. In the muggle world, it was a name that bespoke prestige and good breeding. Even his grandparents and great grandparents had been Kentucky royalty, descended from French dukes with a long family history in the racing horse industry. They were rich far beyond their means, and the land their mansion rested on was gorgeous, untouched countryside.

None of them ever wanted to be related to Demetrius. They wanted to take his place.

Not Willow. It was hard to know how her opinion might change when she got to know him better, but Flash couldn’t resist the opportunity. Even if it was only for a short while, he wanted to be a part of Willow's family.

”I would like that, if you’d have me.” Again, another smile.

@Willow Anderson: This seems like a good note to end this interaction off on, unless there's something you'd like to add. I look forward to continuing this arc!
