House of Toads
Serena watched as a boy cast the Severing Charm on one of the pots, which caused the hole to be cut out flawlessly. He then smiled at her, so she gave a small smile back.
“Yeah, it seems like that did the trick. Thanks for the advice.” She said.
Serena grabbed a nearby clay pot and set it down on the ground where she wanted her eventual house to be. She then raised her wand made of chestnut wood and was about to copy the wand movements the boy did when she stopped. The first-year hadn’t technically learned Diffindo quite yet. While she had seen her family members do it several times over the years, she still hadn’t attempted it herself. And while it was tempting to try anyways, Serena knew the consequences of spells gone wrong. Plus, her parents drilled it in to her when she first got her wand that she should never perform a spell without being sure of herself.
Serena couldn’t help but think of what could go wrong. What if she missed the pot and hit a student? Or what if the spell back-fired onto her? Either way, the images that popped into the badger’s mind of horrible lacerations or even worse injuries made her sick to her stomach. Hurting people was the last thing she wanted to do. Not to mention how much trouble she would get in if an injury were to occur. A clay pot didn’t seem worth the risk that it would bring.
Was there perhaps another way to cut into the pots? There had to be otherwise, Professor MacTavish would have specified that the participants of this errand needed to know the Severing Charm. While she was thinking about her course of action, Serena noticed that there was a chisel next to the girl that she’d almost approached earlier. Could that work? Couldn’t hurt to give it a try. At least with a tool, she would only risk hurting herself. Or her pot she supposed. But it was better than risking the Severing Charm. So Serena walked over to where the girl was working on her house.
“Excuse me, do you mind if I borrow that chisel? I haven’t learned Diffindo yet, and um…wouldn’t want to cause an accident by trying it…” She trailed off, giving a nervous smile.
