A face forgotten
Her mind didn't work the way his did? Clearly. It was like her brain had a lag time or something, why did she need to wait to ask questions, anyway? She had seemed like she had plenty earlier, when she invited him. But now nothing? And why would she regret a bad question, wasn't it information no matter how you looked at it? She would be learning something no matter what she asked, so why didn't she just speak?
She spoke of a different way of thinking, which Kaegen swiftly interpreted to mean worlds. So her world was different than his? That made sense, she didn't look especially strong, or smart, for that matter. She looked nervous, if anything. Strangely good, but nervous. He didn't think the strange goodness did you much good if you were nervous, if you doubted yourself. To doubt yourself was to dull the biting blade of your mind, and Kaegen's mind had to remain perfectly sharp if he wanted to survive the twisted little world of his.
Her world was the world of all the other students, the world that everyone seemed absorbed in, the safe world, the happy world where people didn't notice when you were gone, when you suddenly disappeared into the night. Maybe people in that world just weren't as smart, weren't as observant. Maybe ignorance really was bliss. When she answered his question about the trophies, she referenced yet another world, yet another place he didn't know, he hadn't seen.
"You're basing them off of something you've learned. They mean nothing. Useless pieces of metal that no one remembers. They have failed, and their names are forgotten."
Kaegen started to back up. She didn't have any real questions, she wanted to wait for later? Fine, he could wait. He wasn't going to die, and he had a feeling if she tried to set up a trap it wouldn't be especially cunning.
"If I want to be known, you'll know. And so will everyone else. Come find me when your brain does... whatever it is that it does."
He wondered if she had a magical brain, and instantly decided that maybe it was safer to leave. Perhaps she was designed to kill, not think. That would explain a lot, actually. Kaegen backed away until he had cleared the doors, turned, and ran.
