Hopeful but Hollow
Lark was busy sending two other owls on their way, one a bit snippy over the cracker she offered it, when she heard James. His voice made her jump.@James McMurtrie
"I'll send that one!"
"Wha?" Glancing behind her she watched as James attempted to retrieve the letter. "I mean it's alright if you hadn't finished it, we can-" But it was too late. The owl had taken flight up above the two, the letter falling to another beam. Lark noticed the look on her friend's face. Before she could get another word in he had raced over and was began climbing his way up onto the beams.
"James, wait!" She waved a hand at him and hurried over to where he was standing. A nervous bubble rose in her throat making her lips dry. If he fell they would surely be in trouble, not to mention she'd rather he not break any bones.. especially not this early in the year! Deciding maybe it was best to lend a hand, she followed his lead and climbed up onto the bird bath as an owl screeched it's displeasure at having it's bath so rudely interrupted. Swallowing her fear as she glanced down and back up, Lark shakily held onto the first beam. "Are you sure you need the letter this badly?!"

Hopeful but Hollow
“Are you sure you need the letter this badly?” he heard called from bellow.
He edged his was along the plank – one shaky hand bracing the wall.
“Uh – yeah. It’s a- it’s actually kind of emba- What are you doing?!” he called down to Lark as he watched he follow him up the precarious climbing frame.
“Don’t come up here with me! Then we’ll just both get hurt!” he managed to make his way to the end of the long plank, a cold wind hit his bones as he looked out one of the wide gaps in the stone wall.
The fall outside would be deadly, should he slip. He’d fall more than 50 metres.
His stomach churned, but the thought of the potential fall was pushed from his mind as the thought of the embarrassment hit him. He had to reach that letter.
The highest beam ran through the centre of the tower, just beneath the conical roof of the high tower. He slowly and shakily inched his way along the beam feeling every step deep in his nerves.
A his foot caught on a small notch in the wood, sending James tumbling to his knees… he hugged tightly to the beam, sweat from his hands making the grip difficult.
“I’m ok! I’m ok…”
He steadily began to crawl toward the middle of the beam, the letter just a metre from his grasp.
He reached a shaky hand out and grasped two sweaty fingers around the corner of the envelope.
Nearly as soon as he had the letter, a Large white Barn Owl made the choice to swoop just over James’ back. The surprise caused him to lose his grip, his arm, which once offered him stability, disappeared from beneath him. As his arm tumbled the rest of his body followed and he felt himself become sickeningly free from the entire structure.
His stomach hit the back of his throat as he approached the ground much faster than he had left it. The boy hurdled head first toward the ground, the only thing saving the brunt of the crash landing from being directly to his face, was his shoulder making contact with the side of the birdbath. A CRACK echoed throughout the chamber as his bone snapped in two and he landed sharply on the floor.
James raised his head for a second, holding the letter aloft.
“I got it!” he said, and promptly succumbed to the blackness of unconsciousness.

Hopeful but Hollow
Lark shook her braids to fall against her back so they wouldn't distract her from climbing. Taking a deep breath she was about to hoist herself up when James yelled down to her.@James McMurtrie
“Don’t come up here with me! Then we’ll just both get hurt!”
Giving him a worried nod, she slowly knelt down and stepped off of the birdbath. He was right... but it didn't make her feel any less nervous.
"I just... be careful." Her voice shook as she clenched her hands down on the edge of the birdbath. Yelping as James fell to his knees, Lark flinched and squeezed her eyes shut. This was her fault, she hadn't realized not to send that one letter. Instantly guilt swirled in her stomach.
Forcing herself to look back up at her friend, she watched helplessly. Even with his reassurance that he was okay, Lark still felt sick watching. She had taken a step back from the birdbath to get a clearer view as James crawled along the beam. The silver haired girl stood rooted to the spot, completely frozen. Straining her vision she kept a close eye on her friend, sending up silent pleads for him to get back down safely.
Everything seemed to slow all at once.
"James!" The boy's name flew from her lips, echoing against the stone walls.
Lark's eyes widened as an owl came flying into view, sweeping across James. The air seemed to flush from her lungs leaving her gasping as James leaned from the beam. Opening her mouth to yell, scream, anything.... nothing came. Not even a breath. There was no time for it let alone time to try and move herself towards him. She watched in horror as he fell towards the stone floor. Almost as if time finally caught up with itself everything happened in the flash of a second.
James' falling.
A gut wrenching crack that released the icy grip on her lungs as air swept into them.
A scream let loose from Lark.
Her friend's body crumpled on the floor.
Lark cried out as she rushed over to him slamming her knees into the stone at his side, her hands gently grabbing at his arm not wanting to hurt him anymore than he already was. Eyes racing over James as hot tears streaming down her cheeks. Shaking she leaned closer over him as he lifted his head.
“I got it!”
"No.. No no no!" Wrapping her fingers around his arm, Lark watched as his head fell back to the stone, hurriedly placing her hand underneath it before it could make contact trying to soften the second blow.
"James... James!?" Lark whispered to her friend lying in front of her. She looked around the room and hoped someone was in the lower parts of the Owlery platforms. All this for that stupid letter! Gritting her teeth, tears rolled along her lips. Not wanting to leave him but knowing she needed to get help right away she pushed herself up off of the cold stone floor and ran, almost tripping her way to the stairs calling out for help.
