Summer Camp Swimming in the Lake Open Closed

Tatiana moved her sunglasses down over her eyes and leaned back on her towel, propping herself up on her elbows. She was beaming, looking out over the lake, watching everyone playing in the water and sunbathing. She tilted her head back, closed her eyes and relaxed, enjoying the sunbeams on her face. After a few minutes, a timid voice broke the silence. "Hi, do you mind if I sit here?"

Squinting up at the sun and shading her eyes with her hand, she looked up to see Min-seo Kim standing over her. She was a shy Slytherin girl she had met at Maggie's lake party. "Hi Min!" she greeted her warmly. "And of course!" she exclaimed, smiling. Scooting to the edge of her towel, she patted the ground next to her. "You can join me on my towel, if you'd like," she offered. Just now noticing she was holding her own towel, and realizing maybe she would think it was too weird to sit so close, she added, "Or uhm, you know, on your own is fine too, either way." She shrugged, nervously. She didn't know her all that well, but she'd seemed very nice last time they met. And while Tatiana wasn't a big stickler on personal space, she had to remind herself that others were, and she hoped the girl didn't find her too forward for offering to share a towel.

Min was surprised as Tatiana was totally okay with it. She smiled brightly, her eyes turning into crescents. "Thank you!" she said, still smiling. The other girl said she could share her towel. Min-seo looked at her own. That was quite kind of her. Even though she had her own, she smiled. "Thanks, why not? My towel isn't too great to be honest," she said sheepishly. Min-seo didn't care too much about personal space, because she loved hugs and such. She didn't mind touchy people at all, and to be honest, she was one herself. She sat down on Tatiana's towel and hugged her knees. "Thank you again, I honestly don't know a lot of people here," she said timidly. That itself was very true. She wasn't aquatinted with a lot of the people here. The only ones she was familiar with were Maggie, Carson, and Tatiana. She heard that Alex Cheong was coming as well, but that was during another session. She didn't know if Isaiah was here or not, but that would add another person to the list of people she knew. The rest of the people, she had no idea who they were or which house they were in.

Maggie grinned when she saw Min-Seo up on the shore of the Great Lake with Tatiana. She glanced at Carson, who she’d been having an intense splash-war with for awhile, and said, “Let’s go say hi to Min,” as she dragged her feet through the water, sloshing it around. As she reached the shore, she noticed Min and Tatiana sharing a towel, and she smiled— she was glad that they’d become friends. “Hey Min and Tatiana!” she said, grinning at them. She walked over to where she’d thrown her towel and wrapped it around her shoulders, sitting down next to the girls on the sand. A few yards away, she spotted Katrina Walker, the head of Cabin Lakeside. “Hey Katrina!” she said, waving at the red headed girl. She was about to say something to Min, Tatiana, and Carson when her stomach growled loudly. She chuckled awkwardly and grinned at the three sheepishly. “I guess I’m a little bit hungry.” she said, laughing. “If anyone wants me to, I can run over to the barbecue and pick up some food there, bring it back and we can have a picnic.” she offered, slipping on her sandals. “And if anyone wants to come with me, I could use an extra set of hands.”

Katrina looked up and saw a girl she recognized as Maggie wave her over. Katrina packed her things quickly into her basket and grabbed her towel to join them. She laid out her towel beside the others and listened to Maggie.

“If anyone wants me to, I can run over to the barbecue and pick up some food there, bring it back and we can have a picnic.” She continued, “And if anyone wants to come with me, I could use an extra set of hands.” Carson jumped up to help and they left the group. Katrina would have, but Carson went with Maggie before she had time to react.

Summer did a funny thing to the Houses. Nobody cared about who was in who’s house. Katrina always felt a pressure to hang out with other Gryffindors. Now that summer was here, nobody cared. Another funny observation was seeing everyone in Muggle clothes. You can usually tell a wizard in muggle London because they tend to dress interestingly. All of the Hogwarts students fit in and could pass for a group of muggles at the lake right now. Katrina fit that describing as well, in her dark sweater and jean shorts, she could easily pass for a common muggle.

Katrina broke the silence, “Hi, my name is Katrina. I’m not sure if we all have met. And I am the leader of Cabin ‘Lakeside’.”

Carson walked back from the barbecue: Maggie had seen Dale there, and, not wanting to leave the boy alone, had asked Carson to head back to where everyone else was and ask if they just wanted to eat there instead. Carson had happily agreed, and he now walked towards the group, a bright smile on his face. It seemed that all of Kelpie Corner has shown up: Tatiana and Min-Seo sat on a towel together, and Charlotte Cadunt, a pretty Hufflepuff he’d talked to a couple of times, was wading into the Great Lake. “Hey guys,” e said, grinning at Tatiana and Min-Seo, “Maggie asked to come over and ask you if— holy shit!” Charlotte’s head had slipped under the murky lake water, and no bubbles appeared on the surface. Carson immediately kicked off his slides and ran into the lake, not looking back to see if Tatiana and Min-seo were following him. He dived under the water where Charlotte had disappeared, his glasses falling off as he did so. He opened his eyes underwater, Charlotte’s bright white swimsuit standing out among the murky green combination of seaweed and dirt. With one big swoop of his arms, Carson was at the sea floor, and he cradled Charlotte’s limp body in his arms. His feet hit the floor and he pushed up, his breath running out. After a few powerful, yet frenzied, kicks, they broke the surface and Carson propped Charlotte’s head up on his shoulder as he swam over to the shore, or at least an area where he was able to stand. Tatiana and Min-seo helped him get Charlotte out, and he gently sat her down on the sand, breathing heavily with his hands on his knees.

Just as Min took a seat next to Tatiana, another girl walked over and introduced herself as Katrina. Tatiana smiled and waved as she set down her towel next to them. "I'm Tatiana," she replied. "Nice to meet you." By this time, Maggie and Carson were out of the water and offering to go pick up food for the group from the barbecue. Now that they'd mentioned it, she was feeling a bit hungry. As they quickly set off again, the three girls exchanged pleasantries, just before noticing their other cabin mate, Charlotte, was finally joining them.

"Don't you want to go for a swim?" Charlotte asked them, dipping her toes in the cool water and turning to greet Katrina. It was getting hotter with every passing minute they spent out there sitting in the sun. "Maybe after we eat," Tatiana said, watching as Charlotte went back to the lake, walking in deeper and deeper until the water was even with her shoulders.

Tatiana watched as her head bobbed in and out of the water as she swam. Under the water, back up for air, under the water again and... a few seconds passed and she noticed Charlotte hadn't returned to the surface this time. At this moment, Maggie and Carson were returning from the barbecue and seemed to notice as well. Without hesitation, Carson jumped into the murky water after her, emerging a few moments later with her limp body in his arms. Alarmed, she and Min rushed to the water's edge and helped him pull her back on to shore.

Coming to after a few seconds, she looked worried and maybe a little embarrassed, and pointed out she seemed to be bleeding. Luckily, Min came prepared and quickly rushed back to her bag for a small first aid kit. As Min-seo disinfected the wound, Katrina offered to take her to the hospital wing to get it checked out. "Are you alright?" Tatiana asked concerned, kneeling down in the sand beside Charlotte.
