General The Slytherin Table 2019-2020

"SLYTHERIN!" the sorting hat cried. The Slytherin table erupted in cheers for their newly gained first year. The surprise on Prim's face could not be hidden. She gained several reassuring smiles and several weird looks from the crowd of 2nd,3rd, 4th years, and so on. Prim slowly walked down the stairs and to the rows of chairs and tables that led to her new future as a Slytherin. She was moving so slowly (or so it felt) that she felt as if a tortoise could beat her to the table. The noise around her was so loud it made her head spin and her ears ring. She could barely see. But one thought rang through her head. Why Slytherin? People always said that the sorting hat is never mistaken, but after the name that was just called from it's leathery mouth, Prim wasn't so sure. Prim was not cunning nor brave. Weren't those the two main features of a Slytherins personality? At least that is what her mom told her. Thougts were running through her head faster than a lightning bolt. She was almost positive that she would go sit in her place at the table, then her fellow Slytherins would realize she was not truly one of them, and then they would shun her. That was the last thing that Prim needed for her confindence. Prim was almost to her final destination at the very end of the Slytherin table, though she just wanted to keep walking and go all the way home. Then she remembered at home was only judgement and comparison to someone who she was not. She took her seat and the table and covered up her face, but fortunately, no one was paying any attention to her, for other names were being called up from the front and more children were making their way to their new house tables. Prim took a minute to let the moment sink in. She knew her family would be ashamed of her being in Slytherin, for she came from a family of Hufflepuffs and Gryffindors. She knew once her parents were aware of her "housing situation" that they would think of how much better her sister was than Prim herself. Prim took a quick look around her remembering the reassuring looks and smiles. From that point on, Prim knew that Hogwarts was her true home. She realized that Slytherin was the only place where she would ever truly belong. She was ready to prove to her family and to her house that she wasn't her sister, or her mom, or any other person other than herself. She was Primrose Mcarthy. And little did anybody know there was and is so much more to Primrose Mcarthy than meets the eye.

Thora tiptoed into the Great Hall. Oops. She just had to be late for dinner on the first day of her second year. Besides, the Sorting Ceremony today. Like it or not, she felt like she needed to be there. There were new first years, so she could at least welcome them? This would be awkward.... Well, here goes, Thora thought as she slipped into an empty seat, fingering her heavy robes clearly labeled with the Slytherin house crest.

She watched as first years apprehensively sat down, one by one, on the seat at the front as the Sorting Hat sorted them. The brunette smiled, as she could imagine herself on that seat just a year ago, shyly trying to avoid the eyes of all of the students out there. Honestly, she probably would've done the same thing. She smiled at a nervous girl walking down the aisle towards their table and slipped into a seat next to Thora, burying her face in her hands. At least there was another seat on the other side of her. Maybe someone she knew, preferably Bridget, would sit there. What Thora really wanted to do was to ignore the strange girl next to her, or let someone else take care of the situation. She hated any type of talking, unless they were friends. But this was a first year and she had an obligation to at least be kind.

So, Thora tapped the mystery girl on the shoulder. "Hey, I'm Thora," she said. "Welcome to Slytherin." The second year smiled. At least it was a start.

A tap on her shoulder disrupted Prim's thoughts. She quickly turned around to see a brunette girl, carrying a smile on her face, welcoming Prim into Slytherin. Prim was frozen in fear. She did not even smile back. Prim did not know what to say, and for a moment she didn't say anything. Prim's instincts told her to move, to run, to stay hidden, and to never come out. Prim was scared of this girl before she even met her. I can't do this, I can't do this, I cannot do this! Prim's thoughts were racing, her mind screaming. She probably looked like she was about to have a heart attack, but she didn't care. Nerves were overwhelming her entire body and she was beginning to hyperventilate. Yet the girl was still smiling at Prim. She began to calm down. Maybe I can do this. Her breathing slowed and her eyes finally opened. Were my eyes really closed!?! I must look like I'm terrified. Well I kind of am terrified. Prim finally got a good look at the girl and she realized that the girl wanted to talk to Prim just as much as Prim wanted to talk to her. And that was about 0%. But the girl still did. Though this girl did not really want to say 'hi' or to say 'welcome' she did. Prim realized that she was probably taking up this girl's time and that she ought to speak back. So she did. She spoke the first words since she got on the train, into the castle, and since she got sorted. Then she said with airy words and a nervous smile, "Hi! Um... My name is Primrose Mcarthy. But p-please. Call me Prim."

Thora cringed inwardly as the first year responded airily. It was strange--she sounded frightened out of her wits. Now, Thora could understand as she had been much the same when she had entered Hogwarts. What was this strange castle? Did she somehow travel into medieval times? What was with the creepy talking hat? The young soon-to-be-Slytherin had barraged the empty air with silent questions that first day she had walked into Hogwarts.

What was she supposed to say to a scared first year? She seemed to hazily remember some older girl--a prefect, maybe?--welcoming her to the house. Although it did nothing to calm her nerves, it did maybe make her feel slightly more welcome. "Hey Prim, welcome to Slytherin," Thora tried again, "And don't worry, Hogwarts is really fun." What a weak start... the brunette thought. That was the best she could do? There had to be something better she could say. Thora picked up her glass and smiled as it filled with water chock-full of ice. Hogwarts was a magical castle, but still, the girl marveled at how she seemed to receive whatever she needed--in terms of food that is. Injuries and such accidents were definitely not in her favor here, however, as she had ended up in the Hospital Wing more times than she wanted to admit in the past year.

The second year resorted to a kind smile as she waited for the girl to respond. Hopefully, she didn't come across as creepy.

"SLYTHERIN!"
It roared into the great hall, and the hat was lifted swiftly off her head. Madeline sat in a daze for a moment, as cheers erupted in the hall, especially from the green-clad table. No one had ever cheered her like this. If felt amazing. Madeline's cheeks and ears burned as she hopped off the stool and quickly walked over to the table, her eyes wide with surprise and a smile plastered to her face. A warmth in her chest... pride.
- Sorting Ceremony Thread
Madeline slipped into an empty seat and took some steadying breaths, wiping the goofy smile off her face for a more restrained, soft one. A feeling of community is something that she has never had. As she calmed her heart and let her burning ears cool off, she watched the next students have the hat slip on and yell their placement. After a moment, Madeline looked around the table and realized some students were already conversing. Madeline smiled and said hello to anyone who acknowledges her and listens to conversations around her. Her stomach gave a pang of pain and started rumbling as she clapped for the next student walking to their house table.

Around her, Madeline observed a girl shuffling cards talking aloud about them, a girl with a pile of books, a boy with dark wavy hair and what looked like second-hand robes, a fidgeting older girl with a glare on her face and seemed lost in thought, a pale blond boy who was probably a first-year too who was fiddling with a beautiful locket, and a girl who just slipped in late. There was quite an array of different personalities, she noted. Across the table, two brunette girls conversed awkwardly. The one who introduced herself as Primrose looked like she would tremble apart at any moment. The other girl Madeline watched sneak in late when Madeline first sat down.

"Hey Prim, welcome to Slytherin," She said, "And don't worry, Hogwarts is really fun." Slytherin didn't seem to be as scary as Madeline had heard about. Madeline waited for a moment for Primrose to respond, not wanting to interrupt their conversation until finally she couldn't help but lean forward towards the girl across the table and say,

"But we'll learn a lot here, right?" She furrowed her brows, "A fun time is... great... but we'll learn to become strong here, right?" Gazing intensely at the older student for a moment before leaning back. She took the empty glass in front of her too and watched it fill with warm cider. "My parents said they were worried Hogwarts wouldn't teach me seriously enough from what they've heard about it. They almost sent me to Durmstrang. I hope I can learn a lot here..." She sipped her cider, her eyes flicking over to the cards being shuffled and plucked, hoping that food would appear soon after the sorting finished. I want to become strong and knowledgeable of more than just illegal dark items and politics. Are my parents right? Did muggle-born witches and wizards make this school weaker?

Madeline suddenly snapped out of thought, "Oh, sorry. I'm Madeline. Madeline Doe. It's nice to meet you both." Madeline smiled.

Prim stared in awe at this girl who had spoken up out of nowhere. She must be so confident! I would have never done that! Prim realized that her mouth was hanging open and quickly closed it. "P-Prim," she blurted out. Embarrassed, Prim continued so quietly her words were barely audible. "My n-name is Primrose Mcarthy." Prim was having mixed feelings about this girl. This Madeline Doe was quite outgoing, and not at all shy. So basically the exact opposite of Prim. But Prim was amazed by this girl! And she was quite terrified of her at the same time. Then again, Prim was quite terrified of almost everybody.
Prim saw everyone pick up their glasses and different colored liquids fill their cups. She decided to try it and see what happened. She picked up her own glass with trembling hands and almost instantly the glass filled with a clear liquid. She dropped the glass with a little yelp as water and glass spilled everywhere. Prim was very embarrassed. "Sorry, sorry, sorry," she muttered. What is wrong with me!?! Ughhh I am such an imbecile! Prim thought of just leaving the great hall altogether to stop the flow of trouble but, she did not know her way around the castle and would just end up getting lost. The two girls she had just met were staring at Prim while she scrambled around trying to quickly pick up the scattered glass but only ended up giving her self several scratches and scrapes on her hands. She realized she was only making the situation worse, so she climbed back up to the tables and slid back into her seat. Prim just sighed. "I'm s-sorry for all of.....this," Prim said as she slumped back into her chair.. "Thanks for the welcome. I'll b-be sure to keep that in mind as I stay away f-from the rest of the glasses." A small smile crept onto Prim's face. "And maybe just for good m-measure I'll stay away from the candles too." She wouldn't want to catch Hogwarts on fire would she?

Thora jumped a little in her seat, startled as another girl stuck her head into the conversation. She hadn't seen her before, so maybe she was a first year, freshly sorted into Slytherin? The second year fought a sudden urge to shrink in her seat as the new face hurriedly pummeled her with questions. Would they learn a lot here? Um... obviously. A little overwhelmed, Thora wrapped her fingers around her glass of water as she waited for the new girl to finish.

"Yeah, you'll definitely learn a lot here--don't worry about that. Oh yeah, I don't know much about Durmstrang, honestly, but we learn a whole lot here at Hogwarts," Thora quickly finished, not wanting to reveal anything about herself--least of all her being muggle-born--as the newcomer seemed to have a bias against muggleborns, talking about becoming strong and whatnot. But then, what did Thora know? She, honestly, was just a second year trying to be kind to first years, so she just gave both girls the benefit of the doubt.

As the girl introduced herself, Thora took note of her name. "Hey Madeline, I'm Thora. Second year. Welcome to Slytherin," she said with a warm smile. Hey, at least she was getting a little better at this. The girl was fumbling for what next to say when Prim spilled her water everywhere. Cringing as the cold water flowed onto her lap and spread quickly over Slytherin's long table, Thora brushed it off of her robe. She didn't want to make the first year feel bad, especially as she began stuttering out an apology.

"Oh, no, you're totally fine..." Thora assured the girl, "Don't worry about it." Settling back in her chair, the second year took another sip of her own cold water. "Just pick up your cup again--it should fill." Thora had admittedly done the same thing before, spilling her water everywhere. Nobody really noticed, as the Great Hall was big enough as is. Hopefully, Bridget would get here soon. She had nothing against these first years, but after all, she didn't really know them yet...

Emerly watched, one eye wider than the other, as suddenly it appeared a few of the older-more experienced students reached out to pick up their glasses, completely unfazed as if it was normal for each of them to miraculously fill up. He looked at his own cup in a state of dismay. Was it, erm, safe to drink things that had just appeared of of nowhere? What determined what drink he would get? Would the glass... read his mind? Why did so many objects in this castle have such an affinity for reading minds? He sighed in a state of monotone acceptance as he brought it up to take a sip. Cranberry juice. Was it a coincidence it was what he wanted or not? At any rate he'd be super careful not to think anything offensive around the cutlery in this castle in the future, lest they turn into something like a howler letter in the future and declare it to the entire Slytherin table.
His thoughts were interrupted as he heard a shatter. He quickly put down his cup and looked over, noticing a girl not too far away with some scratches on her hands from a shattered glass. He was normally quite shy, but he couldn't help but say something when people got hurt.
"Excuse me," he peered around the person he was sitting beside, voice a little uneasy, as she wasn't that far away, "are you alright? That glass scratched you."

Bridget reentered the Great Hall, scanning the long, crowded Slytherin table for a vacant seat. She'd attended the Sorting Ceremony but had slipped out of the room as soon as the feast started to relieve herself. Now it seemed her original spot near the back of the room had been occupied by several rather loud first years. But wait a moment... was that Thora? It would've been far easier to tell a year ago, back when the now brunette had fairly fiery auburn hair that was easily distinguishable among the masses. Still though, the small girl was pretty sure that it was her. Better yet, there was an open spot next to her.

Striding over to the opening and hoping every eye in the room wasn't watching her, she slid onto the bench next to the girl who was definitely Thora just in time to see a young girl she didn't recognize--almost certainly a new first year--spill her water all over herself. Bridget felt her cheeks grow warm, as she'd done the same thing last year, although with pumpkin juice. Although that had been the beginning of her track record for meeting people in embarrassing ways, it was helpful because she knew just the spell to dry off the water. She slid her laurel wand out of her pocket with the same care Camille had used.

"Scourgify," Bridget muttered, moving her wand in an S shape before pocketing it once more. She wished she knew a spell to help with the cuts the girl had from the shattered glass, but she simply didn't.

With all that done, she supposed it was high time to help Thora out with whatever conversation she was trying to have with the younger students, likely just because she was being nice. It wasn't as if the brunette was any more interested in small talk then her friend, but she could tell the other girl needed some help.

"Hello, I'm Bridget Collins. Er, I'm a second year. I think you two are first years? Sorry, I missed the introductions... but, what are your names? And um, how bad are those cuts? I can help you find the Hospital Wing if you'd like," she said, the last part addressed to the girl who'd spilled her water. At a loss for what else to say at least until the younger students said something in return, she piled some potatoes on her plate. When another Slytherin who she assumed was a first year commented, she sent him a small glare. Not a very noticeable one, as she understood he was probably just concerned, but still. Poor girl--Bridget had only had two people notice her spill, while this first year seemed to be drawing a crowd.

Madeline glanced between the two girls who seemed surprised by Madeline hopping into the conversation. Madeline felt a blush creep across her cheeks. 'I probably shouldn't have interrupted, even if they're meeting for the first time too. My nerves got the better of me. I should have waited.' She thought. 'The boat ride here went so smoothly with a stranger, maybe I got too overly confident.' The girl her age was gaping at her, "P-Prim," Prim suddenly said, then continuing softly, "My n-name is Primrose Mcarthy." Madeline flashed her a smile to try and help put her at ease but worried that it may have come off differently.

The older of the girls took a moment to answer her sudden question and introduced herself, "Hey Madeline, I'm Thora. Second year. Welcome to Slytherin," and smiled at her. Madeline relaxed slightly, relieved that Thora was at least being nice despite Madeline's potential rudeness. Smiling back at Thora, Madeline was going to start trying to smooth things over, but right as her lips parted, a glass shattered in the hand of Primrose.

Madeline yelped as she got splashed with icy water, but luckily didn't get as much on herself. The girl seemed to be panicking to clean up while apologizing before she sat back, saying something about avoiding glasses and candles. Madeline found it hard to hear over the chatter and said, "Uhm, it's okay! It's okay, things happen--" as she reached for something to help clean it up, desperately trying to remember the spell the servents would use to clean up messes when a new student that Madeline hadn't noticed before appeared beside Thora. She made a graceful motion with her wand and cleaned up the mess quickly with a familiar incantation. Madeline sighed in relief and sat back in her seat, her ears burning from the chaos. Not exactly the impression she wanted to have on others. To cause mayhem by butting into the conversation. She glanced over at the new student to join the table, a little upset she couldn't fix the mess herself but thankful someone was able to smother the sudden chaos.

"Hello, I'm Bridget Collins. Er, I'm a second year. I think you two are first years? Sorry, I missed the introductions... but, what are your names? And um, how bad are those cuts? I can help you find the Hospital Wing if you'd like," Bridget introduced herself and pointing out that Prim was bleeding. Madeline felt worse, biting her lip slightly. She glanced back to Bridget and noticed her quick look at the boy offering his help too. Madeline wasn't sure what to make of the look so she instead introduced herself to the girl quickly, and giving a nod to the boy as well.

"I'm Madeline Doe... Uh, first year. Nice to meet you. Thanks for cleaning that up for us." She said, glancing again at Prim. Her lips pursed while trying to find something to say. She would offer to help take her to the Hospital Wing too, but had no idea where it was. She shifted uncomfortably for a moment, before reaching out to a free glass wishing it to fill with water, and gently placing it in front of Primrose. "A-accidents happen to the best of us. We can save your seat if you, uh, need to get patched up." Madeline tried her best to speak clearly and gave a quick smile to Prim again, despite her nerves still running high. She looked over again at the boy and Bridget, before starting to delicately grab some food. Some poutine she didn't expect to see, and goodness she needed that extra comfort right now. The entire day had been a rollercoaster of events.
