Illowy supressed a groan. Perhaps her frustration was due to her always being so independent, opting to take care of things herself. At least that way, if something went awry, she only had herself to blame and felt more initiative to fix it herself. The girl stepped from her compartment, trying to move quickly around the forgetful girl, "C'mon, then before-" she was cut off by the train lurching into motion, and the brunette stopped where she was.

How do you forget your suitcase? How does one just forget their suitcase? How? Illowy couldn't stop repeating that question in her mind. She'd had all her things in her arms before she even gave her mother a kiss goodbye. Slowly, she turned back to the other girl, "That's out the window, then."

Taking a moment, the brunette looked over the girl. She looked like a proper ball of sunshine with her blonde hair and floral print, "Illowy Magnard." she introduced shortly, slipping around her once more to head back to her own compartment, "And yes. Now come along unless you want plan on laying on the floor in there again." she gestured with a nod of her head to the compartment Elizabeth had fallen into earlier, "There's room in here if you want to actually sit."

I was told I was dangerous. When I asked why, they said, "Because you don't need anyone." That's when I smiled.

Elizabeth watched Illowy for a moment. She seemed older, more mature than Elizabeth felt, even though they were both first-years, and both 11 years old. It intimidated her a little, but she pushed away the feeling, remembering her mother's voice in her head from when she was younger. "You will meet a lot of different people, Elizabeth," she would say. "If you are too selective about who to talk to, you will miss out on some great people."

Elizabeth decided to follow her into the other compartment. "I'm Elizabeth," she said, sitting down on one of the cushioned seats by the window. They were surprisingly comfortable despite their appearance, and Elizabeth snuggled down into it, situating herself for the long ride ahead. She had never been on a train before. In fact, this was the first time she had been on any sort of transportation, other than a school bus, without her parents or her friend's parents. It felt pretty cool having this newfound freedom.

"Pretty amazing, isn't it?" Elizabeth said, peering out the window at all of the buildings going by. Fantastic!" she exclaimed as they went under a tunnel. The train was picking up speed now, and it wobbled ever so slightly as they zipped across the city.

Elizabeth sat back in her seat and looked again at Illowy. "Have you ever ridden one of these things before?" she asked, absently wiping a thin strand of her blond hair off her face.

"So you've said." she responded as the blonde echoed her name once more. For a moment, she hardly listened to the other girl as she stood on the bench, trying to reach her things, dropping her bag on the cushioned seat before finally pulling down her suitcase as well.

Finally tuning into what Elizabeth was going on about, Illowy's bright blue eyes flickered out the window as the train built its speed, "Its just a train. Of course I've ridden one before, back home in Ireland. Its certainly faster then driving everywhere." she pointed out, going back to her things as she clicked open her suitcase, pulling out one of her uniforms and cloaks.

"Now then, listen, because I don't do things like this often." she warned, turning and offering up the set to the forgetful child, "You look about my size, so until you get your things, you can borrow one of my uniforms. Its the first day after all and you certainly can't go to the sorting ceremony in street clothes in front of the whole student body and faculty. And, if by some insane coincidence, we wind up in the same house, I'd rather not have us lose points because of you. So as long as I get these back, I don't mind lending them out." the child spoke frankly.

Illowy was more use to speaking with adults then children her own age, and was rarely at ease around other children. Though while she was poorly socialized and didn't much care for the idea of making friends, she wasn't completely heartless and she didn't want someone to get in trouble on their first day for being forgetful. After all, for most of the first years, this was the most dramatic change of their life thus far. Surely a little forgetfulness during such a transition could be understandable.

I was told I was dangerous. When I asked why, they said, "Because you don't need anyone." That's when I smiled.

"Well, I haven't," Elizabeth said happily, watching Illowy open her suitcase. "It's like we're going on an adventure to -- hey, what are you doing?" she asked quizzically as Illowy took out a uniform. They couldn't be almost there, could they?

Elizabeth grew even more puzzled as she girl appeared to hand over one of her own uniforms, but listened as she spoke. "Really?" she asked, wide-eyed. She wasn't used to that. People weren't unkind to her, but they also didn't tend to go out of their way to help her when she messed up. She usually had to deal with the consequences of her forgetfulness.

"Wow, thanks!" she exclaimed, genuinely grateful. They had only known each other for mere minutes, and already this girl had offered to help her retrieve her suitcase, and now offered to let her borrow a uniform! Elizabeth wanted to hug the girl, but decided against it, not sure how she would react.

Elizabeth took the uniform, she held it up to herself. "Yeah, I think it will fit pretty well," she said, checking to see its length. "You're really nice!" she added. She vowed to be extra careful with the uniform, and carefully folded it and placed it on the seat next to her. She'd keep it spotless and only wear it to lessons, and the opening feast, of course. That way she would keep it in pristine condition.

She settled back in her seat and smiled at the girl. "So when did you find out you were a witch?" she asked, as she continued to take small glances out the window. The buildings were getting farther apart now. This is fantastic! she continued to tell herself internally as she glanced out the window.

Illowy found the girl's enthusiasm toward her act jarring, but at least it would put the blonde's mind at ease, "I'd just rather not have to see you run about like a chicken who lost her head when it we arrive." she spoke simply, as though trying to write off that she had done it from the kindness of her heart, "Like I said, I don't do things like this that often." She clicked the suitcase closed once more, shoving her things back where they'd been and settled back into her own seat against the window, across from Elizabeth.

When the girl asked the strange question, Illowy furrowed her brow, "What are you talking about?" she asked, genuinely confused. What sort of a question was that? She's always known she was a witch. Her whole family on her mother's side were witches and wizards, and everyone else she'd ever been raised around were as well. The confused gaze was suddenly replaced widened eyes as it clicked in her mind and she rose to slide the compartment door closed. There were some things best to keep away from prying ears, "Elizabeth," she began, looking at the girl strangely as she took her seat, "Sorry if this is rude or anything but... are you a Muggle-Born?" why else would the girl ask such an odd question? Who else just ups and realizes one day that they're a witch born into a muggle family? Was she messing with her?

Elizabeth noticed the furrowed brow, the strange tone, the hurried shutting of the door. Something serious was about to happen, and she grew ever so slightly tense. She stopped paying attention to the changing scene outside, and focused all of her attention on Illowy.

Did I say something wrong? she wondered, suddenly frowning. Quickly, she went over everything she had said, before finally hearing the girl's question: are you a muggle born?

"Umm...y-yeah, I guess. I mean, both my parents are Muggles so..." she trailed off, looking quizzically at the girl. What's wrong with that? she wondered, pulling her legs up to her chest. It suddenly felt very cold in the compartment. "I found out I was a witch over the summer. But surely lots of people find that out, right?" she wondered. "I mean, there were strange things that happened long before that, but we didn't know it was because of magic." She stopped talking for a moment, suddenly feeling very defensive. "But someone from Hogwarts came to our house and said that I'm magic. And at Ollivanders, the wand chose me." she trailed off again before saying, "I know I am. You can't get through platform 9 3/4 if you aren't!"

It didn't surprise her that the other girl was suddenly so defensive of her background. It did, after all, pull her identity into question, "If you got a letter and a wand and got to the platform, you're a witch. I'm not disagreeing with you." she assured, trying to keep her tone fairly neutral this time around and making the attempt to sound tactful, "But to answer your question... I mean, I'm sure a fair amount of people just realize it one day, but the majority have always known. Most people on this train were raised in the wizarding world."

The girl leaned back a little, looking over the blonde as she thought. In a way, she could remotely sympathize with Elizabeth, when it came to the topic of muggle parents. Though it was very remote. Her own father had been one, but he's skipped out on them long before she was born. Wither it was due to her mother being a witch, or simply muggles being the abandoning type, she'd probably never know. All the same, the girl sat up again and spoke carefully, "Look, you're very new. Not just to the school, but to this world, and I'm sure there's plenty of people here just like you who can relate better then I can. That being said, just like in the muggle world, there's prejudice people out there. Even at Hogwarts. So if you're smart, unless you really trust someone, I'd keep the fact about your parents to yourself." she meant it earnestly, wanting to look out for the other girl. Children could be cruel to people who were different, just as much so as adults; and to Illowy, she'd hate to see such an innocent ball of sunshine be picked on for something beyond her own control or understanding.

I was told I was dangerous. When I asked why, they said, "Because you don't need anyone." That's when I smiled.

This was all news to Elizabeth. She hadn’t even considered the fact that others had just grown up in magical families. Now that it was pointed out to her, it made sense. She had some rudimentary knowledge of DNA, and how different could magical DNA be from regular DNA?

However, what she didn’t understand was why it mattered if her parents were magical or not. After all, she was. The rest seemed irrelevant. Were they she was going to tell about the magical world? Perhaps that was it. She would just have to assure them that she knew how to keep a secret just like everyone else. Yet, as she thought, an uneasiness grew in her heart, and she pulled her legs up to her chest. It had to be more than that.

“Why is it that big of a deal if my parents are magical or not?” she asked, looking quizzically at Illowy. “I’m no different than them, except I haven’t known as long.”

She glanced back out the window, where field after field, bursting with vibrant flowers were slipping in and out of view. Why, when good things happened, did something all complicated have to come up, too?

It was obvious how confused and discomforted Elizabeth was coming to understand the situation, "Its not a big deal, honestly... its just that there are students come from magical backgrounds who are very proud of their pure blood." the inflection the girl put on the last words dripped of distaste and she rolled her eyes, "Blood status and were you come from are part of who we are. Most people don't care much about it anymore. I mean, most witches and wizards have muggles in their family, or a muggle parents or grandparent. Those are half-breeds. But some still think that just because their from this family or that family they're better somehow." she explained, trying to choose her words carefully.

"It doesn't mean they you're at a disadvantage with your magic. I mean, there's plenty of muggle-borns who've gone on to do amazing witches and wizards. Some that graduated from here even. Like um... have you ever heard of the witch Hermione Granger? She was a great witch that was a student here during the war and my mom said she was a muggle-born."

Illowy tucked some hair behind her ear and gave a little shrug, "I don't know why they think that way, they just do. They call them," the girl leaned in a bit and lowered her voice, "mudbloods." Illowy hated that word. Just the sound of it filled her with a grimy, dirty feeling. She returned to a normal volume and leaned back in her seat again, "I just would rather you know going in then get ambushed because you don't know. Its not your fault you don't know. And it would suck if anyone to put it in your head that you can't do what they do over something stupid like that."

I was told I was dangerous. When I asked why, they said, "Because you don't need anyone." That's when I smiled.
