@Corrine Aelina Speech
@Angel Dayes Speech
Hearing Corrine’s worry about flying, Dido felt a weight she hadn’t really noticed until then lift up and off her shoulders. It was a sense of relief. Relief that she wasn’t the only child who secretly, or not so secretly in Corrine’s case, harboured fears about the wizarding world. Of course, Dido wasn’t scared of flying itself, but hearing Corrine speak about her fears eased Dido’s nerves about the entirety of Hogwarts all the same. Gone, or at least faded, were the worries about making friends, about teachers, even about what the meals would be like, covered up by a new sort of companionship Dido hadn’t really experienced before. Shared knowledge combined with shared fear.

Her new happiness only increased when Corrine voiced the same thing she had when she first badgered her mother about Quidditch. The whole image of witches on brooms being stereotypes. Dido had been confused when she first heard about broom-riding. From what she had gathered so far, the magic community was pretty guarded, trying desperately to ensure that information about it didn’t spread to “muggle” ears. So why was this image that was so reinforced in children’s minds through picture books and films actually true?

But she wasn’t given long to dwell on the question as Corrine quickly added, “Then again, I don’t really know where that stereotype came from. Who knows, maybe it really originated from the Wizarding World.” Dido almost opened her mouth to reply, theorising with the girl, excited to share in the curiosity, but was stopped by Corrine’s final mumble: “I might look into it.

If Dido’s mouth had been open, it swiftly closed as she was met with the ever-present limit on her thirst for knowledge. Her hatred of reading. Since hearing about Hogwarts, especially about the houses, Dido had worried that this one trait would stop her from getting where she belonged: Ravenclaw. And then, in the bookshop, still days away from the actual sorting, it already had acted as a disadvantage. To Dido, it seemed as if, if she had enjoyed reading, she could have cheerfully responded to Corrine, agreeing to meet in the library and scour the history books together, inevitably becoming best friends. While this image was, perhaps, a little far-fetched, it still hurt Dido and left her embarrassed in its wake. So, instead, with burning cheeks, Dido quietly said, “That’s a good idea… Let-I would-I’d love to know what you find out?” in a tentative tone.

By then, Dido had finished paying and had moved to the side for Corrine when, to Dido’s surprise given the girl’s quiet and seemingly controlled actions so far, Corrine fumbled with her purse and it managed to slip through her fingers. As the poor girl knelt to quickly pick up the coins as best she could, Dido couldn’t help but feel a sense of dry happiness. At least I won’t be the first to make a fool out of myself, Dido thought but swiftly cut herself off. Corrine hadn’t made a fool of herself! She had just dropped something. Confused and more surprised at herself than she had been at Corrine, Dido dropped to the floor too and managed to pass one of the final coins to the girl. It was a silver one and, despite her residual feelings, Dido smiled in pride as she instantly recognised it as a sickle, worth twenty-nine knuts.

After Dido finished her awful “joke”, Corrine response made Dido forget all about her nasty thought. Corrine said, “I don’t really know about that, she’s not really in my life,” and Dido immediately coloured, absolutely mortified. Being a rather sheltered eleven year old, Dido hadn’t quite learned how to react appropriately to mentions of anything she herself hadn’t yet experienced. So, instead of nodding and moving on, Dido instead adopted a look of concern that probably was more befitting for a Mother Superior rather than a short child. She felt horribly guilty, having brought up the topic and, thankfully for the conversation, managed to force herself to listen to Corrine’s next statement before smiling only a little more weakly than before.

Hoping she hadn’t messed up the first interaction she had had with another witch or wizard, besides her uncle, Dido glanced back at her list, double-checking that the girls had bought everything. On confirmation of this, she shoved her tall pile of books into her bag and pulled out a ballpoint pen before crossing off the final items on her list. Mentally crossing her fingers, hoping that Corrine would follow, Dido began to walk out, talking over her shoulder as she did so, saying, “I’m all done with my list! What have you got le- Sorry!” she exclaimed as she suddenly bumped into another girl who was, of course, Angel Dayes, who was standing by the shelves near the entrance. The girl Dido had hit had long dark hair which and was very pale and, when backlight by the brightness of the window behind her, very briefly made a terrifying silhouette. But only very briefly. Dido took a step back, smiling sheepishly and ducked her head, muttering further apologies as she did.

Although it was subtle, something about the statement of “looking it up” must’ve affected Dido, since her face had become conflicted. It was a subtle twinge of expression, but Corrine had picked up on it surprisingly well, causing her to become curious. Was it something I said? The girl thought to herself, blinking. It’s not like she was offended; she’s aware not everybody is fond of reading books. The same way she often prefers books over people, others were more than entitled to prefer quite literally anything else over books. Maybe Dido is one of those people, she concluded quietly, hearing the girl’s hesitant words about any possible findings in the future.

The way Dido had said it—hesitant and yet hopeful—made Corrine’s heart warm. It seemed that she wasn’t the only one looking for friendship here, which made her relieved. Dido is really nice. I hope we become friends. Corrine smiled quietly, nodding. “We can catch up if ever I find anything.”

It was an open invitation to continue interacting, if not leading straight into friendship. Surely, that was obvious enough to Dido. Otherwise, Corrine will be even more horrifically embarrassed than she already was when she had dropped her coin pouch. Thankfully, Dido hadn’t said anything, only quietly helping her pick up a coin or two, which she thanked her for.

Please forget that, please forget that. Corrine chanted in her head, wishing the world would swallow her whole, allowing for no further incidents to be done. By instinct, she moved to follow after Dido, who already began to leave and was glancing back at her. The shorter girl turned back to her supply list after she saw that Corrine was in tow, crossing out some items on her supply list. In fact, she was midway through finishing her question—likely about supplies, considering she was still holding her list—only to bump straight into a girl near the entrance of the store.

Corrine looked ahead just to make eye contact with another shorter girl, almost exactly Dido’s height. However, unlike Dido, she looked a tad bit more unapproachable.

So naturally, Corrine froze like a deer in headlights, not knowing what to do except bow her head in anxiety. From what little she had processed, the girl was extremely pale, and the sunlight streaming through the window didn’t help whatsoever. The only other remarkable thing Corrine had remembered before forcing her head down was the girl’s lips.

Blood red, if Corrine could remember correctly. Like a vampire, she thought to herself nervously. Considering she herself was a witch, who’s to say that vampires didn’t exist? Werewolves? Literally anything else that was commonly seen as within the fantasy realm?

"In every life, through every door. . . I hope to meet y0u again."

It would seem two people had noticed, well only one, the other had bumped into her mumbling an apology, pheraps they were startled? One seemed frighten another anxious seeing Angel. Angel stumbled a bit regained her balance. Although inconvenient she didn't harden and simply soften her eyes. It was an accident and that was all it was. No harm to either party so she let it go. Straightening her polo shirt, looking at the two girls who seemed shocked seeing her she leaned forward to be a bit closer.

"You guys ok? Looks like you just seen a ghost or rather something peculiar?" her voice was intended with interest

Angel noticing the other girl whose eyes were directly at her lips. So it was probably the uncanny color of the lips taking a form of blood that caught them of guard. Scratching her head a slight laugh came from her mouth, maybe worried the others might see her as scary.

"Apologies, did I give you guys a fright? The library is always cramped so it's valid if I was unexpected. It's rather quiet today as well." Angel said, rather articulate and resonant

Noticing the others seemed just as confused as her, wondering who they all were. Angel in exhalation, maybe having a revelation that she did not quite start a introduction to herself. Again scratching her neck she laughed humoursly and spoke again.

"How rude of me! My name's Angel, Angel Dayes. May I ask what's yours?" speaking to the both of them, she hoped atleast they can get aquatinted.

As Dido looked back at Corrine, she noticed something that struck her. Her utter stillness. What was wrong with her? Corrine looked nervous- even more nervous than when the coins dropped to the floor or when Dido first came across her- and she stood still, seemingly fixated on the pale-girl’s face. Dido glanced at the girl, trying to figure out what Corrine was so stunned by. The girl was fairly pretty but Corrine hadn’t seemed to be one so shocked by a pretty face. Nothing truly stood out to Dido, except for possibly the girl’s bright red lips, but Dido assumed that it was some sort of lip gel or blessed genetic inheritance.

As Dido looked back and forth between the girl and Corrine’s expression, pale-girl leant in slightly and warmly asked, “You guys ok? Looks like you just seen a ghost or rather something peculiar?” before laughing slightly. As she chuckled, Dido pulled her gaze away from Corrine and brightly responded, “Sorry again, we were just caught off guard!

What was it Corrine had seen? The question gnawed at Dido. Was it something behind the girl? She quickly leant to the side, hoping to catch a glimpse of this shocking passerby but… nope. Nothing interesting beyond a couple of teenagers and a man who was only surprising through how greatly uninteresting he looked.

The girl continued as Dido checked past and around her, “Apologies, did I give you guys a fright? The library is always cramped so it's valid if I was unexpected. It's rather quiet today as well.” At that, Dido tore her mind away from the nagging question and asked, “You’ve been here before then, I guess. I don’t suppose you go to Hogwarts?” intrigued by the idea of making a good impression on a second-or-even-third-year before school even started.

Eventually, the girl introduced herself as “Angel Dayes” and Dido smiled at the girl’s rather formal way of including of her last name. She quickly ran through the list of pureblood-centric family surnames that her mother had told her, checking “Dayes” against them before coming to the happy conclusion that: No, Angel was not a pureblood supremacist. While this was expected, it’s always nice to confirm. Dido considered offering a handshake to match Angel’s formal tone but, deterred only by the pen, letter, bag and books in her hands, chose not to and instead just said, “I’m Dido, and this is Corrine!

She suddenly felt guilty at having spoken for Corrine to respond to Angel’s question… but surely the girl wouldn’t be angry, right?

Does Corrine know for how long she’d been frozen in place? Not quite, but the girl was still in front of them. Every now and then, Corrine raised her head just enough to glance at the girl, but it wouldn’t stray any farther than the blood-red lips. As they began to speak, she slowly but surely moved to hide behind the girl in front of her.

A comical sight, really, considering Dido was shorter than Corrine by two inches. It didn’t do anything, but Corrine certainly felt better behind somebody. She slouched slightly, shrinking just enough to hide and dip her head. The others’ words don’t even click in her head properly as her thoughts quickly take a turn for the worse.

I want to go home, she cried internally, feeling her breath hitch anxiously. Dido had been one thing, as she was just one person, but another person this quickly into the day? She wanted to hide away in a shell, practically like a hermit crab. It also occurred to her that the way she hid likely didn’t give off a good first impression, but she couldn’t help it. The girl was genuinely intimidating at first, but to Corrine, practically everybody is.

Still, Corrine didn’t want to seem like a big meanie. Although the mysterious girl’s tone was coolheaded and aloof, it wasn’t icy. She must be at least a little nice. What if she thinks I’m ignoring her? I’m not doing it on purpose. By this point, her attention finally clicked to the conversation, hearing the last portion of Dido’s words.

Just shy of actually exposing herself fully, Corrine peeked out from behind Dido, finally looking up. She nodded along to the introduction, not saying much else. Honestly speaking, her new friend had done the work for her, and she’s nothing short of relieved.

The other girl seemed to be peaking from Dido's back. Angel gotten a bit worried. Was she scaring them? Hope not! It would be a terrible mistake and one she has to stop beforehand before it might take a long turn to take it back. Dido said the girl's name was Corrine. A lovely name, Angel associated it with the corals and ocean it did sound like chlorine maybe it just sounded like that.

“You’ve been here before then, I guess. I don’t suppose you go to Hogwarts?” Dido asked her, Angel smiled maybe this can be the ice breaker.

"Well soon, it's been quite a ride to be honest! So much stuff to get especially books." she said nervously shaking her head. It seems like Angel was getting a bit timid it occurred to her that they might think she was scary.

"I promise I mean no harm! No need to apologize too, I'm not offended. I hope this clears the air between us!" she added with her words rushing

Corrine, as Dido introduced to her, was a bit shy and not much of a talker but Angel didn't mind and definitely made a decision to try her best to talk to others, she herself was also getting a bit shy too. Well let's see if they can be less tense now. Angel in her mind really wanted that too happened, so they knew she really wasn't that mean, and if she looked like that.

"I know it is a bit much to ask of new people and we just met but—" cutting herself off to pause and then under her breathe she said

"Can we be friends?"Angel winced a bit before she opened her eyes again

I am so sorry for A) the wait and B) the small word count- I'm slightly ludicrously panicked re GCSEs so putting almost all my focus on that!
WHAT WAS IT THAT WAS CAUSING CORRINE TO ACT SO ODDLY?

It was a burning question- No, not burning. Scorching. It was scorching Dido from the inside out, her blood bubbling in curiosity as she desperately tried to figure it out.

Corrine had moved to stand slightly behind Dido. Was she hiding? Either way, Dido’s thoughts were more like “WHYWHYWHYWHY” rather than, “Is Corrine hiding behind me?”.

Eventually, though still unsatisfied, Dido concluded that Corrine was just shy around new people. Sadly, Dido did not spot the flaw in her conclusion: that Dido herself had been “new” and Corrine hadn’t just frozen. Alas, Dido was not self-aware enough and so managed to move on, instead listening to Angels hesitant question, “I know it is a bit much to ask of new people and we just met but- …Can we be friends?”

While she hadn’t felt hugely nervous during the conversation until then, Dido’s stomach flipped at Angel’s request. It was so closely aligned with what Dido had been thinking- praying- and yet said with such relative ease in comparison to Dido’s fear to even approach the topic of friendship. How did Angel do it?

No matter how Angel forced the question out, Dido smiled genuinely and opened her mouth to eagerly agree before closing it again. She glanced at Corrine. While the girl hadn’t objected to Dido introducing her, it was almost certainly too far for Dido to accept an offer of friendship on Corrine’s behalf. So, in an unusual moment of awareness, tact and politics, Dido cut short her “We-” and instead slightly dodged the question and replied, “I hope so- it would be nice to make friends so early… What have you got left on your school list?"

Corrine continued to “hide” behind Dido the best she could, leaving her figure hunched in an effort to make herself seem as small as physically possible. Not that it did anything, of course, as Dido was still shorter than her by a good amount. The girl in front of her had been more than nice during their interactions, and Corrine hoped that they might even be friends now. Angel, the new person who had joined their conversation not too long after, also seemed nice—even if she was initially intimidating.

She barely processed Angel’s request to be friends as she fidgeted with her fingers. She’s so brave, she thought with a hint of admiration, even as she kept herself quiet. There were very few instances in Corrine’s life when she had mustered up the courage to just plainly ask about potential friendships, and if she were in Angel’s place?

I wouldn’t have done it, she thought sheepishly.

That being said and done, she did want to be friends. Not just with Dido, but with Angel too. It’s been the exact thing she’s dreamed of all these years, and she finally had the chance!

But at the same time, she’s severely overwhelmed and unprepared. So much of her life was spent without friends, and her longing for company doesn’t erase the fact that so many changes have hit her straight in the face today, leaving her feeling like a mess. These are coming at a rate that’s coming too fast for her to keep up. A break was very much needed, and she honestly wished she could go back to her grandmother now.

For a moment, Corrine debated just quietly detaching herself from the two girls when they’re busy. Should I slip away at my next chance? Her lips pursed in thought, but she eventually shook the idea off before she could contemplate it any further. To go without warning would not only be rude, but also it’d make her come off as disinterested in the friendships, which was anything but the truth! She’s interested in making friends with the two of them, truly, and she didn’t want to lose that chance just because she’s overwhelmed. Even pushing the situation aside, there were still items on her supply list that she couldn’t go without.

When the girl finally decided to speak up, it’s not to answer the request Angel had made. In her mind, it was better to show than to tell, so she opted to mumble to them about how she still has things to get. A quick glance spared to her supply list told her everything; she’s yet to get her wand, copper scales, a cauldron—no idea how she’s gonna carry that around if it’s as big as a witch’s cauldron—a box of phials, and.. A remembrall?

What on earth is a remembrall? It was right then and there that Corrine decided that wizardkind had weird naming conventions, though perhaps that was probably to be expected. It sounded like they’d just smushed the words “remember” and “all” into one noun, so perhaps it had something to do with memory.

“I don’t know how long I’ll be able to stick around since my Nana is waiting for me back at Leaky Cauldron,” Corrine quietly spoke, finally looking Angel in the eye shyly before looking back down. “But I still have a few things to get from the list.. If you guys want to do those together.”

In embarrassment, she doesn’t mention how her stomach was complaining for a snack.

"In every life, through every door. . . I hope to meet y0u again."
