Rose standing next to Max was looking at the sky while he was stating both the constellation of Cassiopeia and Canis Minor were looking alike so that he confused them. Rose could understand him especially when one is not familiar with stargazing and the stars in general. So she was rather proud of him to have asked her to help him out. And she was delighted to be able to give him any help he would need.
Now instead of giving up she could say he was trying and really wanted to learn about Astronomy or at least trying to understand it. Apart from him being her friend as one of the reason she was helping him noticing him trying was another and much stronger reason to help him out.
"Yes it can be tricky sometimes. But once you know how they look like it is much easier to differentiate them. And when you look on a map then in the sky I can help you as well!" Rose said smiling. "But I can understand it can be difficult when one is not really familiar with it."
At the beginning it was the same quite for everyone since she also went through this stage. Obviously her interest probably made it easier for her than for Max but she knew he could do it as well. Then Max suggested her to explain him how she found the planets earlier and that they could do it together.
Rose turned her head towards him smiling and nodding in agreement. It was indeed probably better for him to do it that way. Certainly it would be more helpful as well. Rose then thought for awhile to put her ideas into practice and explain the easiest and most understanding way to Max how to do. She contemplated the idea of using the map again but it didn't seem to be that helpful to him so perhaps it was not the best way. But it were to be then a bit more difficult since Rose knew already the constellations so for Max the map would be needed.
"Well... I know the constellations so when I look at one if I see there is one more star in it it is most likely to be a planet so I then checked with the telescope. As for you you need to use the map after we would have named the constellation. As we name it we will look at the map to see if it similar or not. Then if not that means a planet will probably be in so we look in the telescope at that time." Rose explained at least tried to the clearest way she could do.
Then she showed the map to Max.
"Let's look at Cassiopeia." Rose pointed the constellation on the sky and compared it with the one on the map step by step to be sure Max were going to see it in the sky as well. "You see here the stars forming the constellations it is like on the map. There is no one more dot meaning no planet is in that constellation. So let's look at the next one." Rose pointed to another one which was Aries. She contemplated the idea of letting Max doing the comparison with the map by itself.
"Can you try comparing? I will help you if you need. This is Aries, here." Rose told Max pointing the Aries constellation on the map for him to know where to look to compare with the one in the sky.
She was encouraging and showing all his support hoping he would succeed.
“She looked towards the dark, starry sky wishing she could drown in its vastness, the way one drifts in the deep, endless ocean.”

He took the map when it was offered, and followed her pointing. «Sure, I can give it a go!» His tone was far more confident than how he felt, knowing this would never turn out well. He looked between the sky and the map, before pointing up. «Well, if that one is the one on the map right there, then that one is the one there…» He went through the whole constellation in this way, with occasional looks over at her to confirm he was still on the right path.
«Then that would mean that one right there is the planet, right?» He pointed to a star and internally crossed his fingers. Maybe if he got this right, the part with them huddled under the blanket and chatting would come sooner. Sadly, he was in no such luck right now. The star he pointed at was clearly marked on the map as well. Still, he remained hopeful.

As Rose was explaining to Max she kept glancing at him to make sure he was getting what she was saying. Indeed he was trying his best although she could still notice he was struggling as well. It wasn't probably as fun and interesting for him that it was for her. Obviously she could understand. It was not for everyone and Rose knew Astronomy was not a thing for Max. Nevertheless she really appreciated him trying and putting a lot of efforts in it.
It has already been a long time they were here practicing and looking for planets among the stars and constellations. For Rose it was as if they had just started and she could go on and on however for Max...It was clearly becoming more painful than a piece of cake as it was for her. No fun and games at all. Rose looked at him amused and let out a light laugh.
"This one is also a star as it is on the map." she told him pointing at the map. For a moment before answering she thought of telling him it was indeed a planet but it wouldn't have been fair to let him believing he found a planet when it was not. She reassuringly smiled at him.
"Don't worry Max you did great! Really! Today might not be your lucky day but next time we do it again I'm sure you will find one!" she put a thumb up to encourage him. Max did a great a job as she told him and she was truly meaning it. Rose then looked up at the sky for a while smiling admiring the stars before turning back to Max.
"I think that is all for today." she said her light green eyes shifting to where Max put his bag and the blanket he brought.
"Well I guess we could make use of it by now, don't you think?" she said smiling knowing Max has been waiting for it a long time. And he deserved to rest and enjoy.

«So not a planet then…» He glumly concluded with her. For a moment he sort of wished that she had lied, and let him believe he succeeded. Perhaps then he wouldn’t feel like as much of a failure. But he was deep down glad she didn’t. She knew how much he liked to compete, and pity prize were only for losers. Fools that wouldn’t get a prize any other way, and toddlers. Max was neither.
He tried to nod as Rose went on about how well he had done, not believing it for even a moment. Pity words weren’t much better after all. Though his mood spiked considerably as she declared them finished for the day. He looked at his bag and blanket just as she mentioned them. «You bet!» His mood sure did switch quickly, as he all but skipped over and picked both up.
Throwing the bag over his shoulder and bundling up the blanket, he made his way back. «How about we sit down over there?» It was a good spot. A wall at their back, with a good view of the sky above. He waited for confirmation before sitting down and draping the blanket over his legs. Patiently he also held one end of it up so Rose could get comfortable too.
With them both sitting there, side by side, he drew a deep breath of contentment. This was what he had imagined the evening being like. They got there in the end, thankfully. He didn’t wait long before he dove into his bag though. Stargazing demanded snacks, and Max was nothing if not prepared to be hungry. He pulled out a pair of apples, some biscuits, and even a bottle of water. Very pleased with himself, and even more happy to share, he turned back to Rose. «Help yourself! It’s only fair that I contribute a little bit to the night.»
