The feeling of the spell leaving her wand successfully was like no other; aimed directly at the person who seemed to have some sort of history with Adeline, Robin was sure it would hit. The thrill that overtook her filled the blood in her veins with pure adrenaline, causing her to bounce on her feet. Robin thought her older opponent appeared somewhat masculine, but who was she to assume? If she says she's a lady, then she's a lady. Unfortunately for Robin and Avis, the lady clearly was light on her feet as she dodged both of their spells. Robin cursed, ready to cast another spell to calm her growing thirst for blood when she realized she wasn't paying any attention to her own defense – rookie mistake.

A strange golden fog came over Robin, and the familiar feeling of a flipendo shoved her back, making her let out a muffled, "oof!" Her vision was skewed - she could still make out her teammates and opponents, but something was off. Robin wished she had any clue what kind of spell she had just been hit with, but she could tell it was messing with her head. Grinding her teeth in irritation, Robin begrudgingly was impressed by the second-year Slytherin who'd successfully cast that advanced form of magic. Still, she wasn't even close to being out of the fight. She had quite a lot of competitiveness left in her and grounded herself in pure muscle memory for the onslaught of spells targeted at her. Clearly, the other team thought she was a threat - or an easy target. If it were the latter, they surely had made a significant mistake. She was fully prepared to show them exactly why they feared her if it was the former.

It took a moment for Robin to realize that the third-year girl, Duncan, she believed, had backfired on herself. A taunting laugh was about to leave her lips when she realized that Adeline had also backfired on herself. Rather than waste energy on the opposing team, she nodded encouragingly to Spinks, still struggling to see clearly through the golden haze. A perfectly timed cheer from the stands caught Robin's attention momentarily, and she smiled gratefully at Maisie for coming to show support for the team. Robin had watched her match earlier that day and hoped to keep the team's momentum going.

"Fuck it, we've got this!" She encouraged her teammates. Forcing herself to focus, Robin gathered herself, laughing despite her continued impaired vision. What a rush! "You're gonna have to try harder than that, assholes!"

First came a crash of blunt, deep pain. So much of it that she hardly noticed Avis's double cast, or the fact that Robin was currently lost in a golden mist of dear Evpraksiya's doing. Once the initial ache subsided, came the rage. The understated kind that may not be registered at first glance. Adeline grimaced as her spell betrayed her, firing into herself instead of her target, shoving her backwards with the force a raging gale. She watched as her peers stood tall and confident ahead of her, fearless in the chaos. Now, as Adeline slouched warily at the back edge of the piste, the final feeling to settle in her chest was the worst of all. Shame.

...Until she realized that in the flurry of spells she had missed something crucial.
Archer too, had been betrayed by his magic. Adeline couldn't help but smirk just a bit. Once again, and as unexpected as before, Adeline had no one but the slytherin boy to thank for bringing her back from inside of her own head.

As always, Robin was the heartbeat. Even engulfed in Limbo mist, she refused to let the snakes get the best of her. That familiar, fierce voice sent a much needed jolt of encouragement through Adeline.
"Tell em' Robin."

Really,” Archer affirmed with dry sarcasm.

He rolled his eyes, the distinctive idiosyncrasy lost to the winds that whipped at his cheeks. It had been a cruel twist of fortune, how they had mutually singled diminutive Robin Marie out (her poof of curly hair the main contributor to her height), only for the first attack on her scrawny five-foot-under frame to fail miserably. Instead of the gusts pathetically spluttering out, an already humiliating enough cast, what prompted them not to whirl their way forward but to stay stationary was beyond Archer. His stance was akin to a callous—hardened and perfected over time through all his sweat and blood—yet it had still failed. Instead of enclosing around Marie it enveloped Archer with deadly, weeping arms, and threatened to lullaby him into long sleep.

Livia’s disappointment, and rightfully so, was a manuscript on her features of immaculate composure. A flurry of spells had been slung at him with no mercy, three spells head-on in one singular round. He, being the eldest in the group, was no longer an easy target, but a threat, and the thought sent a smug shock up his veins. The onslaught had begun with Marie’s Petrificus Totalus; it came flying towards him with accuracy yet too much directness, and Archer, nimble on his feet as a summertime bird, had dodged the spell with a smirk. Then was Marlong’s double-attack; a blindfold first threatened to obscure Archer’s vision, the obstacle barely sidestepped before faced with a chill of cold that missed on a whim. He knew, however, he could be dying by a thousand cuts and that would still be no adequate excuse for such a lowly backfire.

In the meantime, his junior duellists had turned the play into an exhibition. Without need for introduction was Machavariani’s classic strategy of Flipendo against the opposing Marie, hitting her with particular gusto and sending her across the piste. More implacable was Vinogradova’s unconventional use of the sixth year charm Vario Nebula, a spell of holy golden light, so still and charming it floated eerily against the juxtaposing chaos of the duelling club.

And where was he, in comparison? Doing the crows a great favour, certainly. Performing our work for us already?—Machavariani had mocked as the Spinks girl had sent herself sprawling back. Archer bit back a laugh at the irony, from her failing attempts of cocksure trash talking to his own display of her jeering.

YoU’rE gOnNa HaVe To TrY hArDeR tHaN tHaT, aSsHoLeS!

The words were a garbled mess as they cut through Archer’s shield of wind, a sharp laugh forcing its way through his thoughts. Yes, he would have to try harder than that, he thought, fingers clenching around his wand, And no doubt, Archer Duncan will. Dispelling the prevalent thoughts of self-deprecation from his mind he simply shrugged—a languid motion on a body that was meant to be gracefully traversing the strikes of duelling yet trapped in a cage of wind—then settled in his self-made demise with reluctance.

xxxxxxxx𝕬 s sunlight through honey.

—was Evpraksiya's first thought when she witnessed her spell distort the space around her azure contemporary, the resplendent mist swirled around her languidly to cast ethereal refractions of the chandelier light throughout the piste. The Slytherin, alone, stood imperturbable and serene where she was while the world around her quickly descended into a pandemonium of corvidae and serpentes.

Truth be told, she hadn't entirely expected the spell to work; it was only something she'd heard Alyss mention once in a passing comment. Was it the best idea to attempt a 6th year spell she hadn't practiced before in a live duel? Perhaps not. Though considering Evpraksiya managed to escape the consequences that dogged her steps with rugged determination this once, she couldn't bring herself to mind the decision.

When Robin’s garbled voice rang out across the piste, Evpraksiya’s well-trained smile pulled into a disappointed frown. Crude language didn't belong on the piste—none of them were alley cats and they certainly weren't duelling in darkened back street corners. She'd expected eloquence to befriend intelligence; unfortunately, it appeared the girl had invited neither to this event.

“Wonderfully cast, Livochka!” she called lightly, she'd once read in a parenting book that praise and affection were instrumental in a child's developmental stages; goodness knew Livia didn't receive sufficient amounts of either in the Machavariani estate, so Evpraksiya had to spoil her adorable little cousin when she could—as any good cousin knew intimately. On the subject, it wasn’t entirely flattery that coaxed the words from her tongue— after all, Livochka's Flipendo had landed beautifully, and there was genuine pride in her voice.

She afforded Archer a sidelong glance; he didn't seem particularly receptive to advice at the moment, and Evpraksiya had found that people seemed to be less open to solutions when they were actively experiencing the consequences for failing to step up to the task. Best not to dwell on the failure. Although, on the whole, she'd thought he'd done quite well! The eloquent writer had managed to dodge the entirety of a team's spell set. Though she did her best to look away when his own magic backfired. Evpraksiya may have perfected the act of a mask, but even she couldn't quite hide the growing smile on her face when Fortuna forsook her colleague.

Hearing Adeline's voice from across the field, Evpraksiya tilted her face toward her; the next few words out of her painted lips would mean. Still, naught to the majority of people on this piste, but for the girl alone, the pianoist knew she'd hear the teasing intent in the lilting tone of her voice as she called out 'encouragement' to the girl in blue.

Vera cringed at the swearing. She had always been told not to speak like that to anyone, even if it was just for competition. "At least keep dialogue to an acceptable standard."

Now, the Fog-Conjuring Charm was one Vera was familiar with. Though, it would've been nice to see it come to life. Was it a wrong incantation or a poor wand movement? Maybe the golden mist was messing with Robin's head? Because Vera heard it was supposed to happen, only for nothing to come out of the golden mist.

Vera sighed. "Unfortunately for Marie, their spell has failed."

But there was still action to cover. Robin's other teammates had managed their spells, both Knockback Jinxes that definitely hurt. Vera watched as the target of one of the Knockback Jinxes, Archer specifically, had been healing themselves only to have that healing nullified by the sudden damage. An unfortunate turn of events. Avis had done just fine with theirs, too. They didn't cast another spell like last round, but at least this one hit.

"Marlong and Spinks are keeping up the pressure, though! We've got more Knockback Jinxes hitting their targets."

"Looks like Slytherin's playing defensive. We've got Duncan healing themselves and Vinogradova has cast yet another golden mist over another Ravenclaw duellist!"

Considering it had thrown Robin's casting off, it was not a bad idea to cast it again and at another duellist. Vera took note of the incantation for this golden mist spell. Vario Nebula. Surely this was somewhere in their textbooks if it could be learned. Maybe a higher up spell like the Fog-Conjuring Charm?

All had been going well until it didn't.

Slytherin's youngest player, Livia, had been at the receiving end of, not one, but two Knockback Jinxes. Unfortunately, like her teammate before, her spell had backfired. Vera could only stand in shock as Livia fell to the ground. Holy shit. Was that really it? Two rounds and already one down?

After a few more seconds, Vera put her hand up.

"Everyone stop!"

She turned to the audience, hoping to find any staff that could handle the situation. "Can we get assistance for Machavariani, please?"

The situation came with a commotion, most Vera didn't pay attention to. She saw to it that Livia was safely taken off the piste. She also made sure the other duellists hadn't thrown spells at each other when they were not supposed to.

Once Livia had been taken off the piste and the dust settled, she turned back to the piste.

"You may continue."

Well. Her spell had been exciting to watch shoot off and all, right until Livia's spell launched back at her. Then, while it was cool that it had succeeded, it hadn't been helpful. Like, at all. She would have gone down whether or not Avis had flung a spell at her. Annoyingly enough.

Watching the first year Slytherin wither on the piste was as frightening as it was invigorating. A major step forward for Ravenclaw, and much to the blue brigades surprise, they hardly had to work for it. Poor Avis was clearly perturbed, and admittedly Adeline would be too if such a beautiful cast had been for naught.

Adeline continued through the shower of spells around her, slinking between the golden clouds entrapping her friends. Gorgeous, shimmering clouds of intoxicating, reality bending mist. It was a perfect fit, really, Limbo Mist and Evpraksiya. The young Raven had ignored the coy taunt previously flung by the Slytherin girl, her voice, melodious as ever. Evpraksiya hid behind her sophistication, her taunting words masked by a polished pearly smile.

Adeline stared Evpraksiya dead in the face, and rolled her eyes in practiced apathy. She prayed the snakes, and her teammates, would not notice the heat creeping onto her face as she pushed on.

Rolling her eyes at the referee, or whatever you call them in this backwards wizarding society, Robin gritted her teeth to avoid calling out more insults. Oh, she had plenty of good barbs up her sleeve. Having four older brothers - all just as competitive as her - was the perfect breeding ground to train the artistic craft of pissing off your opponents. Still, she didn't know if they would go throwing out yellow cards because of her "unsportsmanlike conduct" like they did in Rugby. Robin's older brother, Andrew, had received plenty over the years of his playing, once even ending in an objection from the game. Robin couldn't imagine herself ever losing her temper like that. No, her little verbal spars were just plain old fun.

Please, she thought. It's just a game. Yes, a game that she would win, but still a game nonetheless – and in a game, you use every tool at your disposal. Robin just happened to have a tongue as sharp as the needle she used to sew some Ravenclaw pride onto her uniform in preparation for today. Still, her sharp tongue was one thing – you must have the skill to back it up. And every single spell cast at her so far had left her practically blind in an irritating golden mist that caused her to fail to cast her spell, leaving herself vulnerable. It was utterly undignifying, and unless she could pull herself together, the only one worthy of the insults gathering in her head would be her. Robin squared her shoulders, shoving the self-pity away. It wasn't the time nor place – if she was going to cast through this mist, she had to put every ounce of focus into her next spell.

The blonde from across the room had just taunted Robin's teammate when her own teammate had... fallen to the ground. A cackle escaped Robin's lips as soon as she realized that the first-year Slytherin girl had knocked herself out. She couldn't help herself. She tried so, so hard. Truly. But she still found herself repeating verbatim the words the girl had thrown towards Adeline.

"Performing our work for us already?" she said in a poor imitation of the girl's English accent, standing with her back perfectly straight and in the most perfect posture she could maintain – an imitation that was incredibly inadequate in comparison to the Slytherin girls' natural grace.

With the eyesight of a hawk, there was no doubting Archer saw the beginnings of a Knockback Jinx being drawn into the air before Spinks. He would have dodged nimbly, easily stepping out of its way, graceful and languid as a pirouetting ballerina. Yet disadvantaged by his bind of wind, the evasion that was once exemplary was no longer, and it sent him, wind and all, back.

After the newest edition of Flipendo landed on him, there was little Archer could do other than heal himself. The spell, truthfully, was one he detested practicing. He would not deign to admit that he needed it at all in his duels, despite contrary evidence showing otherwise. “Reparifors,” he said softly, a hot red creeping up his cheeks at the necessity for those words. His body did not scream in pain, it did not wail nor bawl—he was thirteen now, had been through far worse in his psyche, and he was beyond that. His pride however, his pride let out a silent lament visible on his face, thankfully distorted by the winds. But they patched themselves up. They fell, they rose.

Then, in the corner of his eye, he spotted Marlong tracing the same movement, enchanting the same three-syllable word.

Livia!

He had called her name a split second before she fell, his warning prophetic, his eyes wide. Duelling, the modern manifestation of the gladiator games of old, was a cutthroat sport, it was bloodthirsty, and quite often, they had bled. But they patched themselves up. They fell, they rose. Yet Livia, fallen to the floor after a double Knockback Jinx, one from the tip of her own wand, did not rise. No, Archer, still encased in his cage of wind, followed her figure with intent eyes, but all it revealed was the crumpled body of a small girl, barely eleven, thrown into a sport too much for her. In that moment, he was not ashamed to say he felt pity.

Archer’s brows furrowed at the caramel-skinned girl’s cackle of a laugh, her return of the statement pure mockery. A smirk played at his lips, as if his athletic competency did not define his human competency, as if it was all a game. Even in his mind’s state of disarray he was far too prideful to lash out against her, yet far too prideful to let the words go unchallenged either, and instead of a biting remark back, his voice was deadpan as he spoke, “At least have some basic respect for the dead.

But all things continued—they must. And soon enough Livia taken was off the piste and towards the hospital wing. The air in the Duelling Club settled, the distant commotion became background noise once more. No spells had been slung at each other when they were disallowed to, but soon, another round would begin, and while Archer did not have high hopes, he had high expectations nevertheless. His underclassman’s sacrifice would be honoured through a victory.

xxxxxxxx𝓣he white lacquer of her kitten heel struck the dark oak floor of the piste hard, the sound ringing sharp and clean as Evpraksiya adjusted her stance to maneuver away from the burgeoning spell she could see unfurling within the golden eddies of her own aurulent mist. For one suspended heartbeat, she stilled—realizing the spell never came—and used the stolen moment to cast a swift, secret glance toward her teammates. The healing charms she knew could be counted on a single Y-shaped twig, and none would be of use to either Archer or dear Livochka. Yet, it was only human nature to check on one’s comrades, were it not?

Now Livochka on the other hand... Regret wasn't a term that often found itself in Evpraksiya's thoughts but as she slanted her eyes to Livochka—her poor younger cousin now being borne away on a stretcher of dubious cleanliness—it found a unoccupied corner of her thoughts to bask in the attention. So perhaps she was a bit too quick to taunt— and yes—the Vinogradova would concede that praising her cousin in the midst of active combat was unwise (ironic considering her opponents) but with all that was said and done, the only path of recourse left to her was to put one one foot infront of the other until she'd crossed the allegorical victory ribbon.

She would have to visit her in the hospital wing later on, with the medal in hand.

Archer, by contrast, didn't seem to require much of any assistance. He took Adeline's flipendo with admirable grace and seemed barely worse off than he was before! Her seniors certainly picked the most comedic moments to show their competency and Evpraksiya could only take a second to applaud him mentally for his timing. If only a Reparifors could be applied to dear Livochka… but no, Archer had begun the incantation mere seconds before Avis’s jinx had flown through the haze of gold. The timing was doomed from the start.

Pity.

She had to stiffle a laugh at the dramatics of the game. Saints, they weren't infants! Though by the way her contemporaries on the field acted it could certainly be infered and no one would be to blame for thinking so. It was, in it's own melodramtic shakespearean way, charming. Evpraksiya supposed. The urge to win was unequivocally more fervent in some than other's, judging by the way the duel was progressing.

And speaking of the way the duel was progressing... while her mist was able to cover much of the ground on the Ravenclaw's side, it was made abundantly clear it didn't cover nearly enough as Evpraksiya's eyes traced the delicate bloom of pink rising across Adeline's face in tempo with the languid smile stretching across' Evpraksiya's lips. One that narrowly resisted slipping into a pout when the darling brunette turned endless blue eyes away from her.

The calm, steady alto of Archer’s voice recalled her from her reverie:

“At least have some basic respect for the dead.”

Saints, she really must cease forgetting where she was.
