Cadenza For a Falling Guard
Archie paid attention to what Livia was saying, but to be quite honest he didn't really understand what on earth she was saying. He knew nothing about pianos..but at least he was learning? The pianos weren't in alphabetical order either C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C. Apparently two C's? That kinda defied the English alphabet, but whatever. The school's motto was in Latin anyway anyway.
“Treble, bass. Got it.” Archie nodded, not having half a clue what those words meant. “A to G.” He looked like he knew (he really didn't.) He had noticed a bit of a strange rivalry between Livia and that other chap, Livia trying to outdo the frog..ahem the 'singing voice' of the rude stranger. "Neither can I.” Archie replied to Livia's statement, shaking his brown hair in disapproval. "It costs nout to be kind, ya know?” He had noticed the longing look but decided to shut up, because even Archie could agree the boy was good-looking..but it doesn't make up for a rat of a personality “So..Dona nobis requiem...'..what does that even mean? I don't really speak...whatever language that is.” Archie raised a brow, he grew up in places with slang and rhymes..not posh and proper stuff. Eugh. Disgusting.

| CV | The rehearsal room had somehow turned into a battlefield of music. On one side, Camille proudly and expertly performed his own rendition of the opera piece; on the other, Livia and some boy — whose name he’d never bothered to learn— struggled to continue their makeshift beginner piano lesson. Granted, the French boy did not make it easy for anything other than himself to be heard. Completely ignoring any hateful— or spiteful— comment from the other side of the rehearsal room that dared reach his ears, Camille carried on, singing his heart out. He heard them all, of course, but in usual pride dismissed them as muddled brown noise beneath his voice, proof, as the saying went, that haters would always hate. The girl named the notes on a scale, progressively getting louder and seemingly lost her temper in the process. Camille didn’t let it interrupt him; he just smirked to himself, feeling somewhat victorious after the morning’s ordeal. If one looked closely enough, they might have noticed him looking rather pleased, for more reasons than simply acing his high notes. Still singing, Camille glanced over in their direction after pretending they were mere shadows in his presence, just in time to catch the girl turning in her seat to blankly stare. It never ceased to amaze him, apparently, how someone with such fine-cut features could signal something so off-putting, which he essentially boiled down to her attitude sullying the overall image. That must be it. Not for a second did he consider the irony in that statement, given his own behaviour. Compared to her, however, he was actively being unpleasant. He could vividly imagine the ice behind those eyes, but instead of folding, he returned it with a provocative smile— a silent promise that they both could hate him all they wanted, humble him, was the last thing they would achieve. One eyebrow raised, he gave her a once-over. If any of his budding fans would have received the same attention, they would have found it flattering. In this case, which he didn’t doubt Livia was well aware of, it was done mostly out of spite. His practice was not over until he decided it was over, and not a second sooner. The last thing he wanted was for anyone to think they could influence his decisions. They could not. As her gaze turned back to the other boy, Camille glanced away to focus on finishing his session. After another minute or two, the song reached its final conclusion, the vibrato slowly fading into the void. He sighed softly, collecting himself after the emotional song. Now silent, the tension his display had caused felt palpable. Had this been one of his real vocal coaching sessions, the lesson wouldn’t have ended after a single song. Yet for reasons— the company being chief among them— Camille felt his work here was done. He’d end this on a high note. Literally. Preparing his departure, he finally looked at the piano. “Enjoy the rest of your lesson,” he said coldly, assuming they were listening. For whatever it was worth, it was clear that the Hufflepuff was in dire need of them if he ever planned on playing the piano himself. Glancing between them on his way out, his hazel eyes landed on the boy with a haughty smirk. “You’ll need it.” Despite the backhanded insult, his voice was deceptively smooth. |

As Livia had spoken earlier, she had neglected to ascertain whether or not Archie truly understood what she was saying. The explanation, although warm-voiced, had come from the part of her that used to impart information to her brother – not that sweet little Julenka ever followed. She assumed Archie had understood everything and faced him with a small, self-satisfied smile.
Perhaps a similar expression had been dealt unto her by the singing boy earlier. That it remained with her forced her teeth together in an unpleasant grind. Such pride, such hubris, would be that young boy's downfall. A sharp twinge in her chest paired with darkness in her gaze as she pondered the idea of doing it herself, of watching the artful statue topple off of its pedestal, but any glimmer of malice disappeared just as quickly as it had come to the surface, replaced by her default detachment and neutrality. Someday, someone would take their most languid time in erasing that smirk from his face, but that boy was not worth Livia's efforts.
It was the horrifically melodious sound of the presumptuous knave's speaking voice that finally drew her mostly-blank gaze away from Archie. She watched as he wished them enjoyment and left with a phrase that sounded oddly like a threat, but fell flat. You'll need it? Certainly, every human required enjoyment; that was one of the psychological needs of Maslow's hierarchy. Nonplussed, Livia slowly turned back to Archie and shrugged. 'Forgive me if I am incorrect, but I did assume you were enjoying this. Now that we've got the room to ourselves, would you prefer to continue, or to attempt something else?'
In her confusion, a proper reply to Archie's prior query had eluded her; now, she hummed softly and added, 'It's Latin. He was singing a requiem, a song for the dead. The phrase in the song was dona eis requiem, which means "grant them rest". Dona nobis requiem was my attempt at humour, I suppose. A plea to grant us a reprieve from the intrusion.' Although it was less enjoyable after the explanation, the corners of Livia's lips still curved slightly upwards.
Idly, almost lazily, one of her fingers pressed against Middle C a few times. 'I must ask, what was your upbringing like? No Latin, not a lot of music – surely, you had something to keep you entertained?'
