It was no secret that Lucille loved horses. She had grown up on the back of one, and she was incredibly excited to see winged ones. Of course, regular old horses had their charm, but the flying ones were spectacular, as much of the magical world seemed to be. Lucille didn't quite agree with the ethics of horse racing, but winged horses were different. And so, on August 21st, when the summer camp was in full swing, Lucille was oh so giddy to watch the race.
When she arrived, she was almost vibrating with excitement, eyes darting about and taking everything in, before she had even glimpsed the horses. Everywhere she looked, students were dressed quite nicely, but the assortment of hats upon their heads was truly what seemed to scream for her attention. She was glad, as she looked around at hats decorated heavily with bows and ribbons and sticks, oh my! Lucille's own hat had been making her feel a little self conscious, but now that she had entered and saw quite a few hats that outdid her own, the nervousness disappeared. Or, at least, dissipated a little.
Lucille was dressed in a dark red sundress, the edges trimmed with gold lace. Upon the bottom of the skirt, thick golden-orange spirals seemed to spread, almost like fire licking at the ends of her dress.
The hat, too, seemed to fit the theme. A comically large black sun hat sat square on her end, its ends drooping downward by the weight upon it. And what a weight it was. Upon its flat surface, the pattern of her dress continued, the resemblance to fire almost uncanny now. The curvature of the rim was dark grey, reflective, almost the color of a stove. In the middle, where her head was, a web of sticks intertwined, framing the center, almost resembling a nest atop the flames. Within the nest, two nicely decorated eggs laid in wait, the bright color almost draining towards the bottom, with the bottom of each egg a smoky black. The eggs weren't the only thing occupying the nest, no. Between them was a winged horse, chestnut, frozen still in a leaping position. A picture stopped in time, with the horse attempting to leap or fly out of the nest. The chestnut coat seemed to earnestly reflect the fire pattern below. It looked, by all intents and purposes, as if the nest was being cooked over an open flame, and the winged horse was making a final leap of faith to escape.
Any who knew Lucille would be quick to question the hat. It was unlike the softhearted girl to even represent an idea like this, but Lucille had wanted it to be interesting and, truthfully, she had struggled to think up any ideas.
Lucille finally reached the edge of the grandstand, just in time for the first few horses to come prancing out. The announcer's voice boomed in her ear, and Lucille listened earnestly, taking note of all the horses as they filed out.
One in particular stood out to her. Phoenix Flare, the bay. Lucille wasn't quite sure why. Perhaps it was the fact that her mare at home was a bright bay, feisty and just as explosive as the announcer said Phoenix Flare was. Perhaps it was the coincidence of Lucille having a fiery theme herself. Or, perhaps, a final burst in the race, a final attempt, made her wish it would work out for the mare.
Whatever the reason, Lucille soon found herself making her way to the betting station and, hurriedly, placing a bet on Phoenix Flare. Lucille rushed through the process, wanting to get back to the stands before they became packed, too packed for a good view.
Lucille rushed as close to the track as she possibly could. Finally, getting a nice view, she gave herself the leeway to relax. But, of course, her excitement wouldn't make that possible. Lucille was lost in her own world, staring down at the track, particularly Phoenix Flare, and paying no attention to everyone else around her.

Granian Derby
The planners of the summer camp had certainly outdone themselves this year, having turned the entirety of the London Quidditch Stadium into a would-be Muggle carnival. Aly had only just learned about the existence of carnivals and horse races and the like when the announcement had gone out just prior to school's end, but she had managed to do several hours of research about it in the Muggle library in her hometown of Welwyn Garden City in the few days she had been home. Extravagant costuming, beautiful dresses, and absolutely bonkers hats seemed to be the norm when it came to the racing of Muggle horses - so Aly was sure that the racing of magical ones would be even more off-the-chain. As such, she knew it was most necessary to show up and show out in something that would knock jockey socks off.
The time spent making her hat had paled in comparison to the worry Aly had felt while bringing it to London; she lived very close, but still, Floo travel could get somewhat... rocky. Luckily, the giant pale blue creation had survived, and Aly now wore it and a matching blue ruffled sundress with pride: the hat was large-brimmed and slightly floppy, colour-changed to match the dress and thusly only a few shades paler than the brilliant blue sky. She had attached several swirls of wired ribbon to the crown of the hat, right where it rested atop her curly head (most of the locks from which had been carefully twisted into an elegant and tasteful low bun), and also put on - just this morning - an assortment of colour-changed pale blue flowers and several fake blue morpho butterflies that had been enchanted to flap their wings and change positions occasionally, circling the crown and leaving the occasional trail of bluish glitter behind them. When purchasing the butterflies, Aly had only meant for them to be a marker of her Patronus form, much like the tattooed versions that fluttered over her exposed collarbones, but now that it was also her Animagus form she felt a certain sense of pride for wearing them. As if she was carrying an (admittedly registered) secret about which those around her had (mostly) no idea.
Upon arriving at the derby, Aly took a glance around at the other spectators; those which had shown didn't seem yet to be anyone she knew quite well, and though a few quasi-familiar faces did stand out to her, the Ravenclaw decided she'd perhaps best take a solo seat and await her closer friends arriving. Perhaps some of her tentmates would be in attendance soon. In the meantime, Aly approached the betting station and greeted the redhead there - indeed one of her tentmates, though the one she knew would not simply be spectating - with a brilliant smile. "Hello, my darling," she said with a wave of one gloved hand, resting the other atop the counter of the ticket booth. “Fancy seeing you here! Mind if I place a bet? I’m eyeing Nimble Nimbus, myself.” She leaned forward, lowering her voice to a conspiratorial whisper, and winked at her Gryffindor friend. “Truly a spectacle this ought to be, eh? You lot must’ve worked so hard to bring this to life. I can’t wait to see how it all shakes out.” Standing up straight again, with a lady’s posture, Aly cleared her throat. “But no matter. I’m sure you’re busy. Hey, if you see any of our lot, point them over towards me, will you? I’m going to go sit over there.”
With one last coquettish wave goodbye - how lovely it was to be this comfortable around the lioness - Aly fluttered off to the benches, where she took her seat close to the top and examined the horses from her high-up perch. Having unintentionally matched Nimble Nimbus with her pale blue ensemble, Aly felt certain that this was the horse to which she had been drawn for a reason. This would be the one to claim victory, she was sure of it.

"With horses, it’s a roller coaster."
—Rodrigo Pessoa, Brazilian jockey
—Rodrigo Pessoa, Brazilian jockey
Unlike her British pureblood friend, Aly, Manu Macedo had plenty of experience with horse races. Granted, she’d never raced herself and she was also used to horses that didn’t have giant feathery wings sprouting from their backs, but how different could it be? Manu had actually attended the Hipódromo da Gavea Brazilian horse racing club a time or two - even though she’d grown up in a different neighbourhood of Rio, and even though her family was not anywhere as fancy or rich as those which populated the club, it was free to enter and watch. The young girl had spent the occasional Sunday with her brothers watching the horses sprint headlong down the scenic track, but never had she needed to truly dress the part; there had been no elbow-rubbing with the elite of Rio, but rather sweaty shouting and jumping up and down and consuming of snacks. Upon receiving the invitation to what would certainly be her final London summer camp, Manu had given it a very strange look. Fancy dress and big hats? For the derby? Leave it to the British to make things complicated…
Still, she had begrudgingly packed some more extravagant clothes, having raided her mother’s wardrobe as the teenager herself didn’t tend to clothe in such fashions. A silk jumpsuit in rich sapphire blue did the trick, as did a plain black witch's hat to which Manu took some scissors and a sewing needle. In the end, the brim was left alone, and on the morning of the derby the Castelobruxo student cast a well-placed Bluebell Flames charm atop the fireproof material, causing a cone of cerulean fire to flicker upwards from the crown of the hat, where the black cone of material had once resided. She left faint trails of smoke behind her as she picked her way to the derby grounds and towards the bet-making station, pausing only briefly to listen to the announcer yell out information about each of the Granians that would be participating in today's race. Her gaze scanned the gathered crowd as she listened, picking out a similarly curly-haired girl in lighter blue sitting down near the top of the bleachers; it seemed that even though @Aly Salinger had left their shared tent well before Manu had even pulled out her hat, the Brazilian girl's longer stride and less willingness to chat with any stranger she saw had helped her arrive at about the same time as her friend.
Approaching another one of her semi-friends, or at least tentmates, at the betting counter, Manu tried her best to offer Evelynn a stiff smile, though it must be said that the muscles in her face were not quite so used to moving that way. She had met the redheaded girl several times, but still considered her more of an acquaintance than anything; they ran in shared circles, at least, and both shared an affection for the happy-go-lucky freckle-faced Ravenclaw who had brought them together. That put the lion girl in a solidly decent place in Manu's book, which was more than could be said for most people.
"Good day, Evelinha," she greeted, somewhat formally, but still using a nickname of sorts to denote that she considered the Gryffindor to be something of a good acquaintance. Perhaps such a relationship could grow to friends if they spoke more. "I like to bet for... mmm... Snorting Hat." The announcer's description of him - bold, unpredictable, fiery, and with something to prove - had resonated with the Castelobruxo student, for she too most always carried a sizeable chip on her shoulder. "You will put down that for me... yes?"
With that, following Evelynn's response, Manu headed off to join her closer friend in the stands. Taking a seat beside Aly, who seemed intent on watching the race with as close and scrutinising of a gaze as Manu had ever seen, she pointed to Aly's collarbone, where several small blue butterflies now flickered as if painted on her skin and charmed alive. "You did these tattoos the whole time?" she asked, mildly incredulous that her tentmate had managed to keep this from her in the week and a half they had spent under the same canvas roof. "The butterfly that I have showed you caused an impact, as much on your skin as on your hat, no?"

Sayaka's parade had been rained on many a time this summer camp, although never quite so literally. She was most certainly not dressed for it either. Her elaborate hat might shield her from the shower, but it itself would need shielding more to keep the lace and flowers from being damaged by the rain. It was a beautiful and intricate affair, matching perfectly with her robe choice of the day, of the palest periwinkle. Half of her long hair was braided, and the rest was left to flow down her back. She would not be out of place even at the fanciest of occasions. Most importantly, it was not a look to be ruined by the rain. She hurried under the large canvas, nodding to the girl who handed her tickets for her hat and muttering a quick "thank you" to her, although she was unsure if she understood Japanese.
ReducioThe temporary stadium for the race was impressive for the time it had been established in. It promised an exciting show indeed, with the track running around the perimeter being easily visible from comfortable seating. The activities set up seemed mostly designed for children, none of them interesting to her. The photo booth at least was a nice touch, she supposed. She looked up to hear someone announcing what was most likely the schedule for the race, but was disappointment to find that it was only in English. Yet another occasion where the supposedly international summer camp only catered to English speakers. They could've at least provided a translation, although it might take a while for all the languages spoken by the students to be ran through. Although it was irritating that the commentary was inaccessible to her, she could still enjoy the event without it.
Before she could settle into a seat and relax however, she would need to find the correct place to place her bets. Spinning in a slow circle, she observed the track and stands around her. Her eyes settled the little booth near the entrance. She was not in the business of wasting her galleons gambling (not to mention the scandal it would cause for her family), but it was simply what one did at these events. It gave you a horse to root for, and generally made things more interesting. As she made her way over to the booths however, she would find herself once again disappointed. The conversations she overheard between the students and the organiser were all English. This was an unexpected obstacle. Maintaining her calm, she scanned the crowd until she spotted Japanese boy standing nearby.
Slipping through groups of people, she approached her target. "Excuse me" she said "Do you by any chance know English?". Hopefully he would be willing to help her. Normally she wouldn't even consider that people would lack even basic politeness and decency, but that was before she had met her tentmates. Camp was most definitely broadening her horizons, although not in the way she had expected.

Races! Oh, Stella loved Granian races! She had never actually been to one, but- That was beside the point. What was the point was Granians! Equines of any kind were incredibly cool, but winged equines? Possibly the best combo in the entire world.
Now, Stella hadn't come alone. No, she had been regretting the stupid promise she made with her family every day since she got here. (Only kind of. Stella felt a bit guilty about that mess. Alas, she was stuck with a buddy all camp, but at least she had a couple people to choose from.) However, she had quickly lost her particular partner for today. They were near enough by that she wasn't all that worried. Despite all of the people present, there was the potently familiar scent of Pyce still lingering in the air, so they couldn't have been all that far at all.
Stella picked at her hat as she waited at the entrance with everyone else entering the stadium. She had made it herself! It was a large, floppy orange hat decorated all over with little creature charms and faux feathers. Dangling off of the rim were a few small crystals, in either gold, red, orange, or white. The hat itself was seated on Stella's head, as all hats are, staying put with a chunky ribbon that was tied in a somewhat messy bow just beneath her chin.
She had gone all out simply for the fun of it. Back at home, before camp, Lilah had made a small, almost boring hat. It was light blues and purples and whites. It was pretty, but Stella wanted to do something more. At least they had both made their hats. Ren hadn't. (Neither had Pyce, but Stella wasn't going to call them out on it.) It was a simple hat. It almost looked like a baseball cap, if a bit flat on top. Ren insisted it wasn't. Lilah and Stella did not believe her.
But the hat wasn't the most fun part of all this. (The race was, but it hadn't started yet, so it didn't count.) Stella had finally gotten to the entrance and discovered the most wonderful thing. There was betting on the winning Granian! Stella had been greeted by Evelynn, who not only gave Stella some tickets for her hat, but explained the process for placing a bet.
Stella did not think her bet over much. Funniest name won. Nothing amused her more than the Avada Run Fasta. Beautiful name. Stella would love to meet the person behind it.
"My bet's on Avada Run Fasta!" She proclaimed. Stella needed to say this wonderful name as much as possible for the duration of the race. She was making it her life's goal this very minute. Likely the shortest life goal she had come up with recently, but she didn't really care.
Bet placed and companion still nowhere to be seen, Stella let herself get distracted by all the activities within the stadium. Once Pyce was here, she was going to drag them to the photobooth- Or not, considering the announcer had come out and was introducing the horses. Stella could always drag Pyce away for pictures later. Right now, there were seats that needed saving!

ReducioI cannot, for the life of me, find out what Ren's hat is called. Also, I genuinely believe that Stella would not notice any rain unless it was pouring. The hat obscures her vision and isn't letting her feel it either. Lets see how long she can keep the hat on. Stella is not much of a hat person. ☽︎ Outfit ☾ReducioSparkly orange robe done up with silver dragon embroidery and a silver clasp to match. She also has a matching, none sparkly orange choker. As well as the hat. (Underneath the robe is her green dragon shirt and a pair of shorts. You wouldn't be able to see it, but she knows.)

HatReducioHikari inhaled deeply, eyes sweeping over the newly transformed Quidditch Stadium. Only yesterday, it had been a hub of food stalls, booths and decorative clutter. Today, it had been made into something akin of a high-end race-course. Well, he had never actually seen a race-course before, but this.. this felt right. It was beautiful.
He hadn't planned to attend the Granian Derby. In truth, he had intended to crash in his tent until the day of the broom racing tournament. He had even brought his sketchbook and pencils for that exact purpose. He had been hoping for seven days of quiet and solitude.
But no.
The culprit who was behind his situation, like most of the bad decisions in his life, had been his younger brother Hayato, backed, this time, by his mother. 'Go to the Granian Derby and place a bet', he had said, 'Buy me something from the Arts expo' he has said. Hikari had spent the last day running around booths searching for something Hayato might like. The twins were much less problematic.
And wear the ugly hat.
He was being petty. Hayato had at least had the good grace to let him pick out of his collection of hats, and Hikari was decently satisfied with his choice. If he could ignore the fact that he didn't quite want to wear flowers on his head and look at it objectively, it was quite pretty.
What Hikari would have preferred was one with only feathers, or alternatively, of course an all black, plain one. Unfortunately, all Hayato had were a mix of both flowers and feathers. Some of them had indeed been quite ghastly.
Fixing his hat, he headed towards the betting table, surveying the horses in question on his way. He made his decision quickly, being specifically attracted to only one of the horses, the blue sparkling coat reminding him of midnight. "I'd like to place a bet on Loki's Legacy please." He said softly to the girl who was handling the station. He thanked her when she handed him a ticket for his hat and then turned away.
However, before he could move over to the stands to find a place to sit, a voice called out, stopping him mid-step, and he turned to see a girl, probably from Mahoutokoro since she spoke in Japanese. "I can speak English." He responded calmly, stepping around two hat-adorned spectators to properly speak to her, "Can I help you?"

Pyce stood nervously behind their brother, fiddling with their sleeves. They had lost Stella a few minutes ago, her having run off to the entrance, while Pyce stayed to wait for Hecate. Hecate, who apparently went all out for the Derby, smacked their hand.
"Quit that." Pyce stuck their tongue out, but did stop messing with their sleeves.
There was no unfamiliarity with more formal clothing, Pyce preferred it. But Pyce also preferred when nothing was touching their forearms. Long sleeved anything was their natural enemy. But Hecate? Hecate wore t-shirts and shorts religiously, even during winter. Pyce had never seen their brother dressed up in anything more expensive than a thrift store find. But there he was.
Hecate, being the one who insisted they both go to the derby for the hats at the very least, was wearing a crown. Quite frankly, that should have said enough about the situation. The Hecate Pyce knew would have worn the crown and his usual outfit. But apparently this was not the Hecate that Pyce knew. Because he was wearing a dress. Pyce didn't even know his twin had a dress. Skirts, yeah, but they were flowy and not really all that formal looking. The dress was actually nice. It wasn't all wrinkled like most everything else that Hecate owned. It was green and silver, Cate's signature colors, and the skirt ended halfway between his knees and ankles. There was a black ribbon belt around it as well. (The belt looked like it was supposed to be tied in a bow, but for some reason it was just a solid piece. Pyce suspects Hecate just sewed the ribbon to the dress and cut off the ends.) It was a nice-looking dress.
Not that Pyce wasn't dressed nicely themself. But that was more of a default state. Today though, Pyce had forgone their usual (and comfortable) sweater vest, and was wearing a red suit vest instead. The fabric was quite a bit stiffer, and certainly less warm than the sweater vest as well. They also had a hat. There had been quite the push from Hecate after they got their tickets for camp. He had latched on to the "best hat" part, and had started looking for something immediately. Pyce, on the other hand, had come across a simple and sensible looking boater hat during Hecate's search. The only work they did on it was swapping out the black ribbon on it for a red one. Hecate brushed some gold glitter all over it, so it sparkled, but any quick movements sent a rain of glitter off the hat and onto Pyce.
It wasn't long before the two were at the entrance, being greeted by a seventh year, dressed very fancily. Hecate threw some compliments her way before she handed them some tickets for their hats. Pyce did not know they were getting tickets for this at all.
Then she said something about bets. And Hecate's eyes sparkled. Pyce sighed and listened as Hecate bet on a horse named Loki's Legacy. Pyce didn't want to bet. But-
"There is literally no harm if you do!" Hecate reasoned. Pyce sighed again and bet on Snorting Hat. With that out of the way, the twins made their way into the stadium.
Hecate bought them both snacks before they started the long process of finding a place to sit. The process was made far shorter by Stella enthusiastically waving at them, motioning them to come over. They both hurried over and took the two seats she had saved. Pyce was sitting on Stella's right, Hecate to the right of them.
"Who did you bet on?" Stella whispered as the announcer started talking about sponsors.
"I didn't bet on anyone." Pyce said, snagging a jellybean from Hecate. Before regretting it and spitting it out into a napkin. Cauliflower. Bleh.
"Liar." Pyce shrugged. Hecate passed a bucket of popcorn over Pyce and to Stella. She popped a few kernels in her mouth. "So?" Pyce grabbed some pieces for themself.
"Snorting Hat." Stella laughed.
"And Heca-"
"Loki." She hummed.
"Well. May the best horse win!"

Today was going to be an exciting day for Camille. She always loved horses, even begged her parents to let her take lessons until they finally caved and let her do two weeks of horseback riding camp when she was 9. It was expensive and a lot to keep up with though so she wasn’t able to continue but she still always loved seeing horses and now she was going to get to watch not just any old horse race but a Granian race. She glanced around at all the spectators who came dressed to the nines for today’s race, including herself. Camille had so much fun shopping for an outfit with her mother prior to coming to the camp. She wore a huge black and white hat with little red roses on it and a red halter dress with a rose on it to match the hat.
As she walked around she noticed an area crowded with people and realized it was for placing bets on the different horses. Although she didn’t know very much about the odds for each horse to win she decided to join in as well, maybe she would end up winning something. She looked over the horses to choose from until she came across one named ‘Loki’s Legacy’. She wasn’t sure what but something drew her to that horse so she waited for her turn in line and placed everything on Loki. “Well, hopefully you won’t let me down Loki.” She smiled as she held onto her betting ticket, wandering around and admiring everyone’s outfits some more.

┏ ┓ Pericles returned to his assistant role around the voting booth in time to see a head of curls disappear into the crowd. "Was that Aly...?" the eagle asked as he sidled in alongside @Evelynn Decipio. He blamed missing their mutual on the fact that he was walking, for once, given the pair of drinks he couldn't have carried back in bird form. Much of the animagus' summer camp was spent flitting from one self-appointed task to the next; he was more active then ever, seemingly more than was necessary. Pear went out of his way to remain occupied. Now that the objective of handing Eve a shimmering glass was complete, he took it upon himself to tally the bets his partner had collected.
Any self-respecting organizer would commit to the role by dressing for the part. Pericles arrived adorned in a deep cobalt suit and capelet that nearly mirrored the style of his co-host. Upon his head was a goullish accessory: while the hat was a stately blue thing belted in black silk, what looked to be a hairy acromantula was perched on top. Its legs appeared to tuck in and cling to the brim. Its eight eyes were smooth shiny buttons, while its fuzzy exoskeleton gave the impression of felt, a product of- to the keenest of casters- the Arachmutatio spell. In place of fancy feathers, ferns sprouted out from behind its thorax as though the thing was hiding in the brush, waiting to pounce on unsuspecting victims. Thankfully, it didn't move much beyond wriggling its chelicera from time to time. A few inches of black web dangled around the edge, likely contributed by his own beloved Fílos. This only partially veiled Peri's mismatched stare, bright with the kind of quiet excitement he was known for. He savored the charge in the air that so readily resembled the calm before a storm. It had been ages since he'd had the chance to enjoy a derby, showcases of immaculate pedigree and training, the wild thunder of pounding hooves and roar of beating wings, a divine blend of elegance and nature's raw potential....
"A special thank you as well to the Dralt Trading Company, transporter of magical goods and components. As it happens, for those of you soon to be graduating or if you know those recently entering into the workforce, they are hiring Sailors and Couriers!"
A jolt sparked through his nervous system. Freezing mid-count, Peri had listened to the entirety of the announcement as if pinned to the booth's floor. The pinkish tinge of his ears implied this was a surprise, and the hard downturned angle at one corner of his mouth clarified that it wasn't a pleasant one. He'd used planning the summer camp as an excuse to slip out of some expedition his da meant to dispatch him on. In the end, the old man still managed to wriggle work into his life, trying to poach his peers the same way he'd tried to enlist @Aly Salinger at the start of summer. Isaac always seemed to get the last word in. In a classic Pericles maneuver, the heir dealt with the broadcast by pretending he hadn't heard it, nonchalantly carrying on: "Arion never disappoints. If I was a betting man, my money would be on Vitamixin' It Up. I saw her dame race and win at the last derby I went to, which must have been... Merlin, a decade ago now? August 11Bet: Loki's Legacy
An angry ruffling of feathers occured when someone bumped into Derek's owl Perseus. Again, fkr the eleventh time. Perseus dug his claws into Derek's shoulder. He winced in discomfort, then sighed. He was at the Granian Derby Race, because he had already read all his books thousands of times, and had nothing better to do. Well, maybe except talking with his brother and sisters at home, but he had just sent a Hogwarts school owl to do it. He quickly went to the voting booth. He analyzed all the horses and their descriptions.Hmm, Derek thought. Vitamix'n it up looks strong, but so does Nimble Nimbus. His eye wandered over to Loki's Legacy, with it's tricksters eyes and fine legs. The legs looked both nimble and strong, and Loki's Legacy was pretty thin, so it could speed through cracks. Also, its eyes were full of amusement and other expressions that shone too vividly to be just an animal. Derek put his hand on its soft sky-blue hide. "I hope you win, Loki, because I'm betting on you. I hope you're just as surprising as the first Loki." Derek murmured. He quickly entered the betting, placing his bet on Loki's Legacy. He took one more calculating, but soft, glance at Loki, before turning away, walking to the stands. He breathed in the air. Finally, Derek could relax.
