Do They Know Each Other?
Lucille smiled, breathing a sigh of relief when Rosaline said a tutor wasn't necessary. "That's good to hear. I was worried I'd already be behind!" She laughed, shaking her head, knowing it was a silly notion, considering so many Muggle-borns attended Hogwarts, too, and they certainly had no experience with the magical world before.
She nodded excitedly when Rosaline suggested ice cream. Lucille had completely forgotten what she and her mother had come here to do in the first place and, looking up at her mother, it seemed she had, too. "I wonder if wizard ice cream tastes different. I haven't had any before. I think I'll just go with classic chocolate," she mused. Perhaps her words were uninteresting, but Lucille was thinking aloud more than anything.
She entered the ice cream parlor, holding the door open for Rosaline. "Are you thinking of playing any sports?" she asked curiously. Lucille was really interested in broom racing, even though she wasn't sure if she wanted to try out just yet, but she would definitely spectate the games if she could. She also wondered if other students might enter Hogwarts already having an advantage at flying, or playing the sports, perhaps.
Lucille felt she would be a good flier, a credit to her bravery, confidence, and the fact that she rode horseback a lot. She understood that the two things were completely different, but her sport still gave her a boost of confidence in a way, and she was willing to accept it. Besides, she wouldn't get hurt in class, surely. The professor would prevent that from happening.

Lucille seemed more relieved, and Rosaline felt relaxed too. She didn’t like making others feel bad or stressed. On the other hand, she loved making people happy.
Rosaline showed a big smile when Lucille mentioned the ice cream flavors. She said cheerfully, “I don’t think there are many differences? The flavors Muggle ice cream has, wizard ice cream has them too.” She added, “My favorite flavor is Pistachio! What about yours?”
As they entered the parlor, a cool breeze from the magic inside the store made Rosaline feel comfortable. She was finally free from the sun. Though she liked sunny weather, it didn’t mean she enjoyed the heat that came with it.
She thanked Lucille for holding the door open. When she heard Lucille’s question, she answered excitedly, “Yeah, I will definitely try out for the Quidditch team! I always play Quidditch with my cousins in my grandparents’ backyard every summer and winter break. But I definitely need more practice. If I can get on the team, I’d like to be a Seeker!” Because it was her interest, she rambled a bit, and then asked Lucille the same question, “Are you planning to join a sport too?”
Rosaline loved flying. It made her feel free. Whenever she rode the broom and soared through the sky, she could leave behind all her worries for school, relationships, or anything else she couldn’t control. She could be carefree in the sky. Though she worried about things, she was never afraid of new challenges. She smiled softly when she thought about flying.
Rosaline found a table, then went to the counter and ordered a sundae with pistachio, sea salt caramel, and strawberry-flavored ice cream. She turned back and asked Lucille, “What do you want to order?” She was excited to keep chatting with her.
Do They Know Each Other?
The little beads of sweat that had been building on Lucille's skin swiftly evaporated as they entered the shop, and she shivered a little at the sudden cold. However, her body adapted to it quickly and it quickly subsided, leaving her to enjoy the pleasant temperature in the ice cream parlour.
"Call me a cliche, but it's chocolate all the way." Lucille giggled a little at the unintended rhyme, before focusing her attention on Rosaline's question. Lucille wasn't a big fan of Quidditch, to play, at least. She felt the matches would surely be entertaining to watch, but Lucille truly wanted to try out broom racing. She was often nervous in team sports, where she had to work together with other people. She was always scared of fumbling and letting the whole team down, and, unlike Rosaline, she certainly wouldn't be able to handle the pressure of being a Seeker.
"Being a Seeker sounds sort of scary," she said, voicing her own doubts. "Those are the ones chasing after the snitch, aren't they? And it's worth a lot of points?" Lucille's statements sounded like questions. She knew the basics of how Quidditch was played, but things like what the players were called, how many points certain things were worth, those eluded her. Clearly she hadn't had much experience with the sport.
"Sorry, I just don't know a lot about Quidditch," she laughed, shaking her head. "It would just scare me so much to have that sort of burden, with the whole team relying on me, if I was a Seeker. I'm interested in broom racing, though. I might try out for it, if I'm as good at flying as I hope to be," she said with a little giggle.
As they talked, Lucille had almost forgotten about the ice cream, and so she was almost a bit startled when Rosaline asked what she'd like to order. "Oh, yes, ice cream!" she said, laughing at herself. It seemed Lucille was eternally cheerful and, to be honest, eternally laughing.
She looked at the menu for a second, brows furrowed. "I think I'll have a chocolate sundae, with chocolate chips and chocolate sauce. Oh, and a wafer!" Clearly, Lucille's tastes seemed to start and end with chocolate. She loved experimenting with ice cream and other sweets, but she found that her first order at a new place would always be the biggest bundle of chocolatey goodness she could muster. "Can you tell I'm a fan?" she asked Rosaline, eagerly waiting for their order.

Rosaline came back from the counter and brought the ice cream she and Lucille had ordered back. She put the ice cream on the table between them, “Here! I can tell you’re definitely a chocolate fanatic.” Rosaline chuckled and added, “I’m a fan of chocolate too, but I like all of the ice cream flavors, actually, so maybe I’m just a fan of ice cream?” Rosaline’s eyes shone when she looked at the ice cream she had longed for a day. She ate a bite of her ice cream, which was delicious and took away all the heat of the summer day.
“I sometimes think of that, too. But Quidditch is a team sport, so I believe if everyone on the team does a good job, then no need to rely on just one person,” Rosaline said earnestly. She kept saying, “Yes, Seekers are the ones who need to catch the snitch. Catching the snitch can earn 150 points for their team. I can totally agree with you about the burden they take. Though there are some games, even if the Seeker catches the snitch, their team still loses. So the situation depends, I think.” As Rosaline finished her talk, she realized she had rambled a lot on the topic of Quidditch. Her cheeks flushing, “Sorry, I get excited if the conversation involves Quidditch.”
“Oh, don’t be sorry at all. I don’t know the rules of many other sports. Like equestrianism or skating. Those sports look so cool, though,” Rosaline started wondering what it was like to ride a horse, would that be something similar to riding a broom, or would it be totally different? “Wow, it must be thrilling to race on the broom! I haven’t watched any broom racing before. If you ever race, I’ll cheer for you!” Rosaline said beamingly. She paused a moment and kept saying, “I think you can nail the flying! As long as you’re not afraid and stay confident, I think you’ll do great.” Rosaline thought of her own first flying experience. It was also her first instance of magic. While trying to save her cat from falling, she fell out of a window. She had thought she would break her legs, but nothing happened. She just floated. Maybe that’s why I love flying so much, Rosaline thought.
Seeing Lucille as happy as she was when she saw the ice cream, Rosaline felt a weight lifted off her chest. She had worried she might have seemed too childish about the sweet. “I love your choice of ice cream flavors! I’ll have to try it next time I order.” Rosaline said happily.
She thought it was such a perfect day, getting to know Lucille and buying things for the new semester. Everything was heading in a good direction.
Do They Know Each Other?
Lucille giggled at Rosaline's enthusiasm. She was one of the few people Lucille didn't feel like she was too much for; Rosaline was just as excitable as she was. So, instead of the usual apologies that seemed to follow whenever Lucille spoke to someone new and began rambling, she returned Rosaline's ramblings with thoughts of her own.
She giggled a little when Rosaline said she might just be a fan of ice cream. She figured the question was rhetorical, and so only gave her laughter as a response. However, when Rosaline mentioned equestrianism in passing, Lucille found it difficult to stay silent and not interrupt her, her excitement at the topic bubbling and threatening to rise to the surface, pouring out a in a flurry of words. She shoved a spoonful of her ice cream in her mouth as Rosaline spoke, and, despite the sudden cold of it, seemed to melt at the pleasant flavor.
"Oh, this is wonderful," she said as she swallowed. Despite her own thoughts, she had still been quite tuned in to what Rosaline had been saying, and smiled as she finished speaking. Lucille wiped her mouth with a paper towel before speaking.
"Oh, believe me, I really don't mind your excitement. It's nice; I'm much the same, but most people tend to make me a bit worried that I might be bothering them with my enthusiasm. It's nice not having to worry about that with you; you pretty much do the same, after all!" Lucille said, laughing.
"I'm pretty good on horseback. It's what's giving me a bit of confidence with flying. I know it's silly, because the two things are so drastically different, but I figure if I can work with a sentient animal and form a partnership, I can certainly work with a broom, even if that broom is taking me 50 feet off the ground. If Quidditch is your sport, equestrianism is mine," she joked, taking another bite of her ice cream.
The silence was short-lived, as Lucille quickly swallowed, another thought appearing in her mind. "I can't wait to meet a Winged Horse. I have my mare at home, normal with no wings, and I love her so, but a Winged Horse must be a spectacular sight. Wouldn't you agree? Do you think we might get to see one when we start Care of Magical Creatures?"

Eating a spoonful of ice cream, it was creamy and sweet, Rosaline felt content with all the things that had happened today. She noticed that Lucille had become more excited about equestrianism and had begun saying a lot more about it. Rosaline smiled as she listened to Lucille talking. She liked to watch and hear people share their passion and interests, their eyes ablaze, just like Lucille was right now. Rosaline thought it was one of the most fun things in the world, because she could learn so much just by hearing people share.
“Thank you for saying that. I sometimes get the comment that I talk a blue streak. I became self-conscious after other people said that to me. But it hasn’t occurred to me to think you’re too excited! Maybe this means we can talk to each other freely without worrying about all that,” Rosaline grinned widely at Lucille. She grabbed the spoon and scooped up the ice cream, aiming for the sea salt caramel, then ended up with half of it and half pistachio. Happily, she ate that spoon, enjoying the salty, sweet, and nutty flavors.
Hearing that Lucille had experience riding horses made Rosaline wonder, “Whoa, that’s so cool! I think I have only seen horses a few times at a farm or in a zoo. I was just curious about what it feels like to ride a horse, and you answered me. I think you have the talent for Legilimency.” Rosaline joked. “Riding a horse sounds so fun. I can hardly imagine myself riding a horse,” Rosaline furrowed her brows, as if trying to construct an image in her mind. “Is your horse like your pet? I’m really curious about it! And what is she like?” After throwing a lot of questions at Lucille, Rosaline laughed a little. “Oh, I did my rambling thing again. But I really want to hear more about your horse.”
“I totally agree with what you said! I’d love to see a Winged Horse, too. I don’t know if we’ll see one in the Care of Magical Creatures class. Until third grade, we can only see them in the book, I think. But we can still hope or try to ask some senior students when we go to Hogwarts,” Rosaline said brightly.

xxxLucille smiled as Rosaline talked about how she had begun feeling self-conscious when people commented on her tendency to ramble. Likewise, Lucille thought to herself. The very same comment had, instead of making her self-conscious, instead made Lucille a bit apologetic for her enthusiasm, but unwilling to give it up. She understood not being everyone's cup of tea and, to be honest, she was alright with it.
Lucille's brows knit together for a second when Rosaline said Legilimency. The expression was subtle, but there. She was sure she knew what the word meant, but she couldn't quite recall it at the moment. "Legilimency," she repeated slowly, willing the definition to come to mind. "That's like mind-reading or something, isn't it?" She knew that wasn't the correct definition, and definitely something a wizard might wrinkle their nose at with distaste, but that was the best she could come up with at the moment.
"Believe it or not, that's the one thing people would be vehemently against. I tend to not realize how other people feel. I'm terrible at reading faces, or memorizing them, too. I usually end up talking people's ear off, while they're sitting there silently willing me to shut up." She giggled. She didn't think Rosaline was like that, since they had their rambling tendencies in common.
"Yes, my girl," Lucille said, referring to her mare back home. Her eyes seemed to take on a distant look as a soft smile settled upon her face, clearly remembering the horse fondly. "We have other pets, but I don't think I'd call Lightning that. With a horse, you're just forced to trust them a lot more. She could certainly kill me if she wanted. You don't really think about that with a dog or a cat." Lucille realized this probably wasn't the answer Rosaline expected, so she hastily added on to it. "She's more a partner than anything, because we're both relying on each other. She trusts me to keep her safe, and vice versa."
When it came to her horse, Lucille could talk for days, but she figured she'd let Rosaline digest the information she'd just given first. Given half a chance, Lucille could talk about Lightning until their ice creams had melted into soup, and then some, so she tended to restrict herself when talking about topics she loved. "Do you have any pets?" Lucille asked, curious. The only thing she loved more than talking about her own animals was hearing about other people's.

Rosaline ate another spoon of ice cream. She was a fast eater, but was the one who kept her manners too well so that you wouldn’t notice she was that fast. The bowl was almost empty. It still had some melted ice cream on it. The water beads formed on the edge of the bowl. As Rosaline listened to Lucille talk, she mindlessly poked it with her index finger, trying to draw a small smiley face. She noticed Lucille’s tone changed when she mentioned Legilimency. Realizing she might say something wrong, she stopped drawing on the water beads. “Yes, that’s a kind of magic that can read other people’s minds. Some people think it is notorious, but I disagree. I think that magic is a kind of tool, whether it is good or bad, it depends on how people use it,” she quickly said all that in a brief moment. “I might just say another boring rambling again,” Rosaline laughed a little.
“Actually, I cannot tell that you’d talk people’s ear off. It hadn’t happened today. Our conversational skills are definitely evenly matched,” Rosaline grinned widely. “I enjoyed chatting with you; if you can’t see that, I’m saying this,” she said sincerely. She considered Lucille was one of the good people she’d want to continue this newly formed friendship, if they could be friend in the future.
“Oh, I love her name. Lighting, she sounds like the fastest horse in the world,” Rosaline’s eyes lit up as she was influenced by Lucille’s love toward Lightning. “I think your relationship with Lightning must be special. Do you think you’ll miss her when you go to school?” While asking the question, she also thought of her cat at home. She was going to miss her, just as the moment she had imagined to leave her at school, she had missed her already.
“Oh yes! I have a black cat named Golden at home. She’s sweet and cute, but also very mischievous. She loves pushing things off the table. I always need to clean up for her,” Rosaline giggled when she recalled all the mess she had cleaned for Golden.
The door of the store was pushed open, and the bell on top of it rang. Rosaline’s mum, Elowen, walked in with a big smile, waving at her. “Hey, Rosa. It’s about time.” Rosaline was reluctant to end this interesting conversation, she said to Elowen, “Just a moment!”

xxxLucille looked up when Rosaline's mother entered, seeing her own mother close behind. Adelaide smiled, and beckoned to Lucille, a gesture which meant hurry up and finish your ice cream so we can go. Lucille nodded, and proceeded to eat quicker, although there was only a little bit left.
"Golden sounds adorable!" she said, slowing down a little when there were just a few bites left. She would've loved talking about Rosaline's cat, especially since it reminded her of her own. "I have a black cat, too. Daisy May. I'll be taking her to Hogwarts. Without her, I would definitely miss Lightning a whole lot more. She doesn't throw things off the table but she yells every time things don't go her way."
Lucille giggled, before swallowing the last of her ice cream. Then, dabbing her mouth with a tissue, she met Rosaline's eyes and grinned. "You can meet her at school. I'm sure she'd love the attention. Are you bringing Golden? They can have a playdate, if they get along, of course."
Lucille knew she was getting ahead of herself, but wouldn't it be wonderful for Daisy to have a friend at Hogwarts, too? The cat was incredibly social; in fact, they'd first found her because she'd been so desperate to make friends with everyone. She was sure Daisy May would love Rosaline; she was so similar to Lucille, after all!
"Lu, we do need to be getting back. I'm sure you'll see each other at school, maybe even at Summer Camp?" Adelaide finally approached the two girls, looking at her watch. They had originally intended to get ice cream to go, but after bumping into the pair, of course they had to pause and talk. It seemed Adelaide was reluctant to leave, too, but duty calls.
Lucille nodded, although a bit reluctantly. She looked at Rosaline, a little hopefully, perhaps, as if anticipating the girl might agree that they'd meet. She was sure they would, or would try to, considering how splendidly their conversation had just gone.

Rosaline didn’t want to leave. She enjoyed the conversation with Lucille very much. But apparently, it was time to say goodbye, since she, her mum, Lucille, and Lucille’s mother all had other things to do.
She smiled when she heard Lucille talk about her cat. “Daisy May sounds so cute. I can’t wait to see her at school! Aww, if she doesn’t throw things, then she must be a good kitty.” Rosaline’s eyes lit up. She then answered, “I’m still thinking about that, because she’s quite old now, and she’s more like my family’s cat. I might bring an owl to Hogwarts, though I definitely will miss Golden.” With a somewhat lonely look, she quickly kept her head up and met Lucille’s eyes.
"Lu, we do need to be getting back. I'm sure you'll see each other at school, maybe even at Summer Camp?" Hearing what Lucille’s mother said, Rosaline suddenly remembered there was still a chance to meet Lucille at the camp. She grinned widely and said, “Of course, we will meet at the Summer Camp! I’ll go there too.” Rosaline already felt happy as she pictured their second meeting.
Elowen stood next to the door. She patiently waited for Rosaline. Rosaline knew it was really time to go, and she didn’t have much time left. Though this wasn’t what they planned for at first, they all had a great time together. From the content expression on Elowen’s face, Rosaline assumed Elowen and Lucille’s mother had enjoyed a great conversation too, just like she and Lucille.
She got off the chair and gathered all her belongings. Looking back reluctantly, she said goodbye, “See you, Lucille. I’m happy that we met today.” Rosaline waved goodbye to Lucille. Suddenly, she remembered something and turned back before leaving the store. “If you want, we can write letters to each other! The owls will know where to find us.” She smiled and waved again at Lucille, then left with her mum.
