Pyce stared at the cauldrons blankly. They all looked so similar! It didn't help that the main difference between most of the cauldrons was the size. Perhaps it would have done them some good to listen to Aunt Lea's attempt to teach them about potions. Pyce gulped.
"Mm. Maybe we start looking for phials. Or someone to help us with the cauldrons." Pyce glanced around and spotted a shelf filled to the brim with crystal clear glass phials. They were just about to tell Katelyn and go over to grab them, when a throat cleared somewhere behind them.
"I'm sure I'd be able to help you two with cauldrons." Pyce turned to the voice, and there, in the store, was their mother. She was holding up a cauldron, the very one that Pyce and Katelyn would need for school. Slime the cat was still perched contently on her shoulder.
"Ahaha. Hi mum." Pyce waved sheepishly. They weren't in trouble, not when she already knew what Pyce and Hecate were doing, but there was definitely some disappointment in her look for them having run off. Donna only sighed.
"Pyce. Friend who isn't Hecate." She greeted Pyce and Katelyn. Her voice had a tone of exasperation that usually meant Hecate had done something. And it was safe to assume that she hadn't found Hecate yet, given that he wasn't here with them. Or- He was definitely in the store, but Pyce hadn't actually seen their twin just yet.

"That's true. The shopkeeper can probably help us out. It's not busy in here, so I guess we're lucky." Katelyn turned to look at Pyce with a hopeful smile, but at hearing someone clear their throat behind them, she nearly jumped out of her skin as she spun around, tilting her head back to look up. She was met by an older woman who looked very similar to Pyce in appearance. Once she heard Pyce address the woman as their mother, Katelyn lowered her head. Her eyes glanced up at the woman every so often, and she assumed they might be in trouble, given the expression on her face. "Um..h-hello, Pyce's mother.." Katelyn meekly spoke, her hands folded in front of her. "I'm..k-Katelyn..I'd..appreciate you're help, I um..have no idea what I'm doing...heh.." Katelyn introduced herself with a nervous chuckle.
"Oh god...what if I did something wrong? Maybe I knocked over something back in the alley? Or what if I bumped into someone important, and they got mad?" Katelyn's mind ran with possible ideas of that look on Pyce's mother's face, all leading back to Katelyn's horrible first time in Diagon Alley. She began sweating bullets as her anxiety shot up with every possible idea that entered her mind, her mind kicking into overdrive to overthink the entire situation.

"Ah, Katelyn then. Hello. I'm Donna." She handed Katelyn the cauldron. "It seems most first years tend to not know what they're doing." Donna shot Pyce a pointed look. They dropped their gaze to their feet. Pyce was so not listening to Hecate next time. "Though I'd be happy to be of assistance. Cauldrons are easy enough. Hogwarts requires all first years to acquire a size 2 cauldron." Pyce was handed a cauldron next. They took it in both hands, holding it close as not to drop it. They thought it'd be heavier...
"It's tin now, but it used to be pewter. While pewter was harder to scratch, and tougher in general, tin can withstand more heat." Pyce nodded along, even if they weren't particularly interested. Something about the words though... It was familiar. "All around better for potion making and students alike." Yeah. She was absolutely quoting Aunt Lea. As she spoke, Donna picked up another cauldron, likely meant for Hecate, wherever he was.
"And the other things we need to get here?" Pyce asked, once again looking at their list. Their mom mumbled something before shaking her head.
"Right. Scales and phials." She started walking over to the shelves Pyce had seen earlier. Pyce quickly fell into step behind her, glancing back to make sure Katelyn was following.

ReducioI did not do any research into cauldrons or metals for this post. Lies.
Looking it up, it seems a size 2 tin cauldron would be maybe 20 lbs uncharmed, if a bit lighter. I'm not completely sure, and whatever I did to get that number was not math. Outfit:ReducioA red sweater vest over a white collared shirt with rolled up sleeves with navy blue pants

Katelyn let out a grunt as she caught the cauldron, holding it in her arms. It wasn't as heavy as she originally thought it'd be, but it wasn't exactly light either, or maybe that was just an issue on her part. "Thank you...Miss Donna." Katelyn thanked politely as she tried to adjust her arms as best as she could to support the weight of the cauldron. Katelyn listened to everything Donna said, mouth slightly open as her eyes widened in wonder.
"So, can you like, make a potion for anything? Invisibility? Speed? Strength?" Did her questions sound off? Probably. Considering she was going off fictional stories about potions. Her mind was trying to fill in the blanks with whatever she knew about wizards and witches from fictional stories that were most likely far off the mark on their depiction of wizard society. She looked up at Donna with such wonder in her eyes, like a kid released into a candy store. She had a million questions at this point about the wizarding world.
Katelyn scrambled to follow Pyce's lead and fall in step behind her, occasionally having to quicken her pace to keep up with the taller woman. Her robes were shy of fitting just right on her. The sleeves were just a little too baggy on her arms, and the ends of her robes dragged against the floor lightly. The tailor had given her room to grow into the uniform so she wouldn't need to change it so soon when she grows.

Pyce watched Katelyn scramble to catch up with them and their mom. Donna, tall as she was, grabbed two sets of phials from higher up on the shelf. One set was placed into Pyce's cauldron, the other into Katelyn's. She nabbed a third one as she responded to Katelyn's questions, placing the final set into the cauldron set aside for Hecate.
"There certainly are potions for all matter of things. Invisibility and strength I'm sure of. And while I know of many potions that can speed up certain things, I don't know if there is one that affects speed directly." Donna continued through the shop as she spoke. They just had to get scales. And Hecate. Weird how Pyce still hadn't seen him... Maybe he got bored, or tried to look for Pyce outside the shop. He was fine. Probably.
"There's a whole book on potions that we need to get!" Pyce chipped in, though speaking more to Katelyn. "I'm sure we could look through it once we get it!" Pyce was really excited to get their books. Technically, they already had one of them, but not only had their mother forgotten, it seems that the magical list didn't count Pyce's copy with the rest of their school supplies. Maybe that's because Pyce's copy was covered in their notes. Magic could be weird like that.

"Wow..." Katelyn breathed out with a look of wonder, eyes wide open with a wide open mouth smile. Her attention was pulled back to reality when she felt Donna put the set of phials in her cauldron. She adjusted her grip on the cauldron to support the additional weight. It wasn't a huge difference in weight, but she didn't want to risk dropping anything and breaking it. She didn't exactly have a lot of money; her mother only gave her enough to get the items she needed. She couldn't handle extra expenses.
Her head turned to Pyce when they spoke up. Her eyes widened, and a huge grin broke out on her face at the mention of a book on potions. She was practically vibrating with excitement. "Oooooh! I wonder what kind of potions we get to make once we get to Hogwarts! Bet there's one that turns you into some giant ugly slug."
Katelyn teased as she raised her cauldron over her head, trying to seem big and scary. She joked around, a grin on her face. The bell above the door rang, which would make them turn to it. The grin on Katelyn's face dropped practically instantly once she saw who entered the shop: her mother, Octavia. "Katelyn? Are you here, dear?" Katelyn sighed as she lowered her cauldron in her arms, her expression sour as a frown formed on her lips. "Right here Mom..."
Katelyn called out with an obvious displeasure in her voice. Her mother rushed over, worry clear on her face. "There you are, you've been gone far longer than you should've been. I got worried sick-"
Octavia cut herself off as she looked up from her daughter, seeing Katelyn wasn't alone, but was accompanied by another child and their mother. Standing more upright, she greeted the pair with a smile. "I see Katelyn isn't alone. Allow me to properly introduce myself, I'm Octavia, Katelyn's mom. I hope my girl hasn't caused any trouble." Katelyn's head snapped up to her mother as she looked at her mother with an expression almost like offense. "Mom! Really? You have that little faith in me?"

"Oooooh! I wonder what kind of potions we get to make once we get to Hogwarts! Bet there's one that turns you into some giant ugly slug." Pyce laughed as Katelyn put her cauldron atop her head. They were pulled away from the amusing sight when the bell on the shop door rang. A witch, who looked not unlike Katelyn walked in. The connection was clear once she started calling Katelyn's name.
Pyce watched Katelyn interact with her mom. They had wanted to comment on the slug bit. There certainly were ways to get slugs involved in magic, a certain Slug-Vomiting Spell came to mind. Pyce shivered. It was certainly one of the less fun spells to learn about. (Or, more fun? It really depended on who you asked.)
"Hello. I'm Donna, and this," Donna set a hand on Pyce's head. "Is Pyce. Katelyn's been quite a joy so far." She commented. Her hand was still on Pyce's head. They weren't complaining though. "Ah, first year shopping. Always busy, always exciting. Did you go to Hogwarts? What house, what years?" Oh noooo. She was going into that small talk that parents did! Pyce wormed their way out from their mother's hand (it was a gentle touch, they knew they were being dramatic) and walked over to Katelyn.
"I don't know many potions, but I do know there is at least one spell with slugs. It's not particularly pleasant though." Pyce glanced back at the two witches who were conversing. "We could probably grab our scales if we wanted to." Or- Struggle to grab scales, Pyce's hands were full of cauldron. Though they could just set it on the ground.

"Oh, thank Merlin. I was worried she might have gotten herself into some kind of trouble when she ran off." Octavia let out a sigh of relief, greatful Katelyn behaved when she was left alone. Katelyn just stared up at her mother with an unamused expression. "Glad to know you have so much faith in me."
Octavia hardly paid attention with her focus on Donna. Octavia chuckled with a hand over her heart. Remembering her fond memories of Hogwarts, it was like brushing off dust on an old photo album. "Oh, I know, first year shopping is always a whole ordeal in of itself. I remember my first time here with my parents. Got lost for most of it and ended up in Knockturn Alley. My parents nearly tore me a new one over it. Oh, me? Loud and proud Gryffindor. I was a part of the '01 to '08 years. How about you?" Octavia asked with a fond smile. Katelyn's frown only grew as she moved away from the pair. Great, thanks to parents' small talk, they would be stuck here for god knows how long. Katelyn's attention was pulled towards Pyce when they made their way over to her.
Katelyn was happy to have her attention back on magic; her face lit up in a grin as Pyce mentioned the spell they were talking about. "You so gotta teach me it once we get our wands. That way, if someone is mean to you, I can get back at them." There was an evil glint in her eyes, even if her intention was purely to use in retaliation of possible bullies. Octavia glanced at the pair, picking up on their conversation.
"Young lady, if I get an owl about you using the slug-vomitting charm on another student, you will be in big trouble." Octavia commented with a warning tone, brow raised at her daughter. Katelyn jumped slightly as she looked over her shoulder and up at her mother. "And what if they deserve it?..." Katelyn cautiously asked her mother with something almost like a glare. Octavia just narrowed her vision on her daughter before speaking again. "You're better than that." Octavia made her stance clear before returning to her conversation with Donna.
Katelyn just silently glared at her mother; it was clear their relationship wasn't exactly the most stable. Katelyn seems to get irritable every time she has to talk to her mother for any length of time.

Pyce tried not to stare at Katelyn's mother. They had a wonderful relationship with their mom, and it was almost weird seeing someone who didn't. Pyce wasn't naïve enough to believe that people didn't have bad relationships with their parents, but it wasn't something Pyce was used to seeing. They stepped a bit closer to Katelyn, waiting until their own mother was distracting Katelyn's.
"Gryffindor! Arguably the most famous house. I was a Slytherin, graduated '06. We've probably crossed paths before." Pyce nudged Katelyn to get her attention. Their voice was much softer than before.
"If you ever do use the slug spell, we could pin it on my brother, Hecate. He'd probably love that." Hecate would love such blame, actually. Considering he has devoted his entire 10, now 11 years of existence to chaos. Making someone spit up slugs is not only his MO, but if done in defense of someone else, Hecate would take the blame in a heartbeat. He was soft like that.
Pyce set their cauldron down and stuck a hand in their pocket. They pulled out two shining galleons. With a quick glance at the moms to make sure they were distracted, Pyce grabbed two scales and put them in their own cauldron. They scooped it back up and motioned for Katelyn to follow them to the register.
People, their mother included, forgot so quickly that Pyce, while sweet and respectful, quiet and peaceful, was also brother to Hecate, and had an equal penchant for mischief, though less of a desire to seek it out. Oh, yeah, and Pyce was smarter than their brother. If they did something, they were less likely to be caught or chastised, if someone did catch them.

"Oooo, a Slytherin. Hopefully you aren't like some from your house that always had a bone to pick with Gryffindor. That got tiring so quickly." Octavia teased with a roll of her eyes.
Katelyn continued to glare at her mother until she felt someone nudge her. Turning around, she saw Pyce. Her frown was replaced with a grin, at least now she knows they got an scapegoat in case she ever does use that spell. "Oh, you have a brother? What's it like having a sibling?" Katelyn wouldn't know what it's like having siblings with her being an only child and she was more than certain her parents wouldn't be getting back together ever. Her father made it very clear on that front.
Katelyn glanced at their mothers, making sure the two witches were busy before Katelyn followed Pyce, adjusting her grip on her own cauldron to make sure she didn't drop it. She followed Pyce to the register, her eyes barely peeking over the counter as she stood on her tippy toes. She moved to set her cauldron down before digging in her pockets to find the 5 galleons, as her mother called them, from her pocket. "Don't get why we have to use these weird coins. Why not just use pounds like the rest of the UK..." Yet again another part of the wizarding world that Katelyn's mind struggles to fully understand.
