Phoenix did not glance up initially. The potion simmered quietly in the cauldron, its hue black and glassy like a stagnant puddle of storm water. Perfect. Close enough, at least. She set the stirring rod aside with a sense of deliberation that made it part of some sort of ritual—everything precise, everything silent.

Mikey's asphodel joke lingered between them, and she didn't smile, but her lips curled—barely motion, hardly at all. A reaction, restrained but irrefutable.

She finally looked up, her eyes narrowing—not in annoyance, but thought. "Bruising the asphodel is a flaw in character," she said coolly, but a moment later, added with a dry laugh, "right up there with chewing with one's mouth open and breathing too loudly."

The smile vanished as suddenly as it appeared, as if it had never happened, but her shoulders relaxed the tiniest fraction.

She had noticed he hadn't closed in. Not even when he'd had his turn. That shocked her. Most human beings, even introverts, didn't leave that kind of space once you were comfortable. But Mikey wasn't holding back. He was letting it extend naturally, like he knew the space between them wasn't space—it was space that was constructed on purpose.

When he pushed the powder ahead of him and asked who would go next, she didn't respond immediately. Not that she didn't know. Because she was considering it.

She wasn't accustomed to people asking. Or waiting. Or opening up space.

"I can handle the powder," she said at last, voice firm but with a softer edge that hadn't previously been present. "You can handle the flame, unless that would put too much pressure on you."

She didn’t smile—but the joke was deliberate. A test, maybe. Or a peace offering in her own language: barbed, careful, but real.

She scooped the powder precisely, adding it to the potion in one smooth motion. The potion shimmered faintly—so far, so good.

Then, casually, her voice came again, quieter this time, almost like it wasn’t meant to be heard.

“You’re not bad at this.”
A pause.
“I’ve worked with worse.”

She didn't look his direction, but the edge of her mouth trembled—barely—and for the space of a heartbeat, Phoenix Harlow didn't feel so utterly closed off.─────

Mikey kept his hands steady and relaxed as he adjusted the flame under the cauldron, watching the potion flicker with a slight shift in its consistency as Phoenix added the powder. He didn’t look over immediately, but he registered the faint shimmer of the liquid and the precise way she moved. It was like every step had been mapped out before class even started. He hadn’t expected her to speak again so soon. So when her voice reached him, cool and clipped he paused mid-adjustment. "You can handle the flame, unless that would put too much pressure on you."

It was subtle, the jab, but not cruel and he took it as an invitation. He smirked a little without turning. “I thrive under pressure,” he said simply, tone light but with a thread of sincerity woven in. He glanced sideways at her then, catching the smallest shift in her mouth too small to be called a smile but too human to ignore. He didn’t point it out. Instead, he watched the potion swirl again as the ingredients took hold and stabilized under the heat. The scent in the air changed to an earthy, rich, faintly floral scent. Not bad. It meant they were on the right track.

"You’re not bad at this." That one caught him off guard. His eyes flicked to her face just as she added, "I’ve worked with worse." Mikey’s lips twitched but he didn’t grin. But there was something quiet in his voice when he finally answered. “Same,” he said. There was no sarcasm just the truth, offered with the same deliberate stillness she had given him. He didn’t try to build it into something bigger than it was. That wasn’t what she needed. She didn’t need a partner who filled silence she needed one who understood it.

He glanced back toward the cauldron as a faint shimmer rolled across its surface. “Looks good,” he murmured, watching for the precise moment for it to be stirred again. Then, after a second, with the kind of calm focus that had marked the entire interaction so far, he added “If you ever want to partner again, I don’t mind.

Phoenix did not respond instantly. She watched the potion settle, her eyes only faintly narrowing as the sparkle on its surface slowed. It was stable. Balanced. Complete.

Then, and only then, did she look at Mikey. There was no expression that could be read on her face, nothing to make an outsider think that something out of the ordinary had just occurred between them. But she leaned forward by a fraction of an inch, studying him as if trying to read if he was speaking the truth or if he was just being polite.

She exhaled softly through her nose, then: "I'd not object to working with you again." Her voice was flat, controlled. Not warm—but not cold either. The words themselves were plain, said in a purely matter-of-fact tone, but there was something behind them that could have been approval if you listened hard enough.

And then silence.

Her eyes went back to the cauldron. "You're skilled," she added as an afterthought. "And you don't prattle."

Her lip curled—more than a smirk but less than a smile. The kind of thing you might see out of the corner of your eye if you blinked. She took up her quill and scribbled something in her notes, voice easy as if they'd just agreed to work together again.

"If we have partners once more in the future, I'll ask for you," she said, not lifting her eyes.

There was no summons in her words, no barrier either. Only a tacit string of comprehension, tendered reluctantly.

The cauldron released a soft hiss as it cooled on its hook behind them, and the classroom air was faintly perfumed with herbs and smoke. Phoenix did not rush to clean up. She stood, writing in careful, jagged script, intent and unrelenting as ever—but it was different. A little.

Enough.

Mikey lingered a bit after the potion was finished, watching the soft steam curl from the surface as it cooled. No last minute disasters. No singed eyebrows. Honestly, not a bad day in Potions. Phoenix was already scribbling away, back to that sharp focus like nothing had happened. Like they hadn’t just gone from total silence to, whatever that was. Mikey wasn’t sure what to call it. But he knew it was better than what he’d expected when the professor had first called out their names.

He started packing up, sliding his notes into his bag with a bit more care than usual. Then he paused hand resting lightly on the edge of the table. “Hey,” he said, voice quiet but not awkward, just low enough not to carry. “Thanks for tolerating me. You know.” There was a grin tugging at the corner of his mouth, but he didn’t push it. Just enough to show he was kidding. Sort of. He glanced over, not staring, just a quick look. “And… I meant what I said. If we get partnered again sometime, I’d be good with that.

He slung his bag over one shoulder and stepped away from the table, hesitating for just a second before adding with a half-laugh, “Also, pretty sure we set the record for quietest team with the best result in this class.” And with that, he headed out, hands in his pockets, calm and unbothered leaving just enough behind for her to decide if it mattered.
