Kai. Her name was "Kai". Anna hadn't heard that name before. It was a lovely name.
—I'm... I'm Anna. Anna Jasmine Blackberry. My parents are Jacob and Bethany Blackberry.
She did a quick bow with her head and spoke rather softly, as opposed to her usual elegant curtsy and firm introductory speech. After saying her name, Anna lowered her head to think. She heard much about Hogwarts from her parents; that it had fun, that it had culture, that it had diversity and people and parties. But she didn't know coming to this place would create tender moments like this, too. Since when did she lower her guard? Since when had she felt so at ease next to this girl, the girl who called herself "Kai", as if they're connected by soul, even though they've only just met? Anna didn't know that this, too, was a part of Hogwarts.
"When was the last time I felt this kind of peace...?", Anna wondered to herself. It was hard for her to be at ease in this new, crowded place, so this feeling of calmness that struck her body and caressed her soul was more important than anything.
But it was so cold.
Peace alone couldn't warm her soul in this cold air, and her penguin didn't do much to warm anything beyond her arms.
A soft noise of cloth made Anna raise her gaze a bit, and look at Kai. Her mind froze when she saw the blonde holding out her cloak. She didn't quite know what she felt, but she did know her cheeks felt tingly. How weird. Not only had Kai noticed Anna's discomfort to the cold, but had also offered her own cloak to her. It didn't feel quite the same as being given a blanket by her father in starry nights... And it's not like Anna hadn't read about situations like these in books, but the fact it actually happened, in a moment like this, dazed the black-haired, who took the blonde's cloak with shaky hands (was she cold? Nervous? Both? No one can tell) and held it tightly, but didn't immediately wear it. Instead, she looked up at Kai again, inquisitive, confused.
"I... You're telling me to wear this? A-are you sure?"
Her voice was soft, and she didn't know how to act in front of such a unexpected situation. Oh, that cloak felt so warm...
For a moment, looking into the girl's lovely green eyes, Anna forgot the coldness of the air, the breeze that brushed against both girl's faces.

Kai noticed the girls shaking hands, and she nodded. "The cold doesn't bother me, but it seems to bother you a bit, so I figured you need it more than me." She shrugged lightly, adding, "And it's very nice to meet you Anna Jasmine Blackberry. You have a lovely name."

Her voice was soft, and her lips twitched into a tiny smile at the use of Anna's full name. Anna...such a fitting name for her. Kai thought.

She allowed herself to study the girl again, before swiftly averting her gaze. She knew what people said about her eyes. Some said they were beautiful, some said that they could make a person uncomfortable. They were dark, full of hidden depths and almost resembling voids. Kai wondered if Anna was made uncomfortable by her stare, and felt it best not to let her gaze linger on the girl to long.

She glanced up at the stars again, and suddenly wondered if she was successfully making a friend. Successfully interacting with a person without scaring them off. her thoughts turned bitter as she realized that if Anna knew anything about her, had heard anything about her in the halls, the girl would most likely leave.

Kai would admit she had a fierce temper, easy to trigger, and she had snapped at so many students, she was starting to lose count. She was described as rude, abrasive, anti-social and creepy. And yet, she found herself feeling...peaceful.

Here in this moment, she felt a peace she hadn't felt since she had been with her childhood friend, and she was startled by this. Kai didn't make friends easily, and though she was quite observant, sometimes she just didn't understand people. The first person she had ever been friends with was a girl named Yexian, and she hadn't seen her in a little over a year, having lost contact as well after her move. Quickly, she pushed the thoughts from her mind, trying to focus on this calming moment.

Kai once again looked over at Anna, but her eyes seemed sadder, her expression slightly clouded with a distant pain, something that had been there for a while, but it was clear that she was doing her best not to show it, and so, she told the girl her full name and asked another question.

"My full name is Kai Adair Draxon. Do you...Do you like to read, Anna?"

She realized it wasn't the best question, but it was still something, and she stood there quietly waiting for a response

It wasn't the first time Anna heard her name was lovely, as her grandmother occasionally would say as such, and her mother said it frequently. Bethany was the one to choose Anna's name, and repeated it times enough that the daughter remembered the full intent behind it--"Anna" meant "grace", and Bethany's favorite flowers are jasmines. Anna always thought it was quite the sweet origin for her name, and and frequently thought about it. Still, hearing again her name was "lovely" caused a small, proud smile to appear in her face.
It was curious to the little Blackberry that Kai didn't mind the cold. Anna had little exposition to the cold (and also any continuous discomfort for that matter), so it was strange that someone else didn't mind. Then again, her younger brother, Oliver, didn't usually mind when the weather got too hot; something she could never understand, as she'd spend those days melting on the floor, hating each second of the day. "Maybe some people are just more resistant different weathers...", she thought, and put the cloak a bit too loosely on her own shoulders.
Kai Adair Draxon.
So that was her full name, huh. Unique, singular, much unlike Anna's. But that didn't make her feel bad by comparison; no, no, the thought didn't even cross her mind. She was just interested in a name that had never reached her ears before this moment. Kai's name felt mysterious, mysterious like the legends of a dragon that hides all of its treasures and itself in a deep, dark cave that no human could ever reach. Ever wondered if the dragon's actually just hiding candies and a plushie?
"I like your name too, Kai!", Anna said, before the blonde suddenly made another question. "That was unexpected...", Anna thought. More important than that, however, was that she LOVED reading. Most of the library in her house was dedicated only to her father and herself, both avid readers who spent large quantities of time reading for long, uninterrupted hours. However, Jacob typically didn't talk a lot about what he read... Well, more like, he didn't communicate about what he read. Much like Anna, Jacob is autistic, but much unlike Anna, Jacob is non-verbal, so it's not like he talks at all... But he has other means of communication. Still, he didn't particularly care for debating about the morality and philosophy of the books he just read, as he'd much prefer processing everything that happened and see it in different points of view by himself, and hardly took these matters to discuss with other people in the house. On the other hand, upon putting her hand on a book, Anna would get so excited that not even her lively mother or her bubbly brother were capable of withstanding the yapping. Due to that, Jacob was often the victim of his daughter's endless talking, though he occasionally had to pretend she wasn't there in order of not going mad.
"I do! I really like reading. Do you like reading, Kai?"
Her smile grew larger and brighter, and her eyes showed nothing but sheer excitement at the simple mention of books, and she forgot the deep reflection she had been going through for the last several minutes. Ah, the joys such a simple question can create...

Kai watched as Anna just...lit up. She shone as bright as a star, and it was clear to Kai that this girl adored reading, probably just as much as she did. Her cold heart warmed, and she couldn't help but just take a moment to stare at the other girl. She seemed a bit warmer now that she had the cloak on, but she had done it a little too loose for her too feel significantly warmer.

Instinctively, she reached out, tightening the clasp of the cloak just a bit so it fit better on Anna's shoulders as she replied, "I do. I love to read, whatever I can get my hands on."

And that's when it happened. The moment she had been dreading.

She smiled.

It wasn't the tiny ones from earlier, far from it. Kai's smile was dark, revealing sharp canines, and it was full of mischief, darkness and hidden depths. And yet...it lit up her whole face. Her sharp gaze, pale skin, everything.

When she noticed, she knew it was too late. She dropped her hands from the clasp she had been adjusting for Anna and stepped back quickly. Kai's smile fell away and she turned her face away, waiting for the other girl to be horrified, waiting to hear a word she knew all too well. People called her smile cursed, drawing people in with it's hidden meanings but leaving them scared at what was in her head.

Kai was ashamed. She had let herself get so close to the other girl, almost touching her when she had fixed the cloak, which was something she didn't do, she didn't get that close to a person, she always avoided physical touch. And then she had smiled. Kai felt her heart sink, waiting for Anna to leave.

Anna looked at Kai intently as the letter adjusted the cloak on the dark haired's shoulders. So gentle. So attentive. Those words echoed in Anna's head as she heard Kai talk. So she met a fellow book lover... How lucky!
Kai seemed to relax a little, perhaps a little too much... A large smile had fled her lips, a teeth smile, a happy smile. But not a cute or bright one, no, Kai's smile was full of darkness and buried truths, and her canine teeth were just a little too sharp to be your average smile. Anna's eyes widened, as she hadn't realized that Kai hadn't smiled before until now.
The blonde suddenly step away and let go of the cloak she lent Anna, causing its left side to simply fall away from the blue-eyed's shoulder. The shorter of both girls (both short girls, mind you) walked a step closer to Kai, amused of all things, by such sudden withdrawal.
"Kai?" , she called out, but didn't immediately speak again.
"...Your smile is weird.", she said, with a genuine tone of happiness that didn't fit her words. "...I loved it. Kai, can you smile again? I like your teeth. You look so pretty smiling..."
If "I like your teeth" isn't the weirdest compliment, it sure gets in the top five. The little Blackberry, despite having this bizarre choice of words with a lot of room for misunderstandings, had truthfulness and joy in her voice.
Kai's teeth weren't exactly normal, but neither were Anna's, whose front teeth were just a bit bigger than they should be. However, all she heard about it were how it made her look like a cute little rabbit... Of course, her uncle and brother teased her for it, and of course, not much afterwards they'd also complain that her bigger teeth made it easier for her to bite them.
Anna reached out for Kai's shoulder.

Kai looks so pretty when she smiles~!

Kai was stunned into stillness, her eyes suddenly locked on Anna's, searching for a sign of deceit, of fear. And to her surprise, there was none. She's not scared...she thinks I'm pretty when I smile...and she likes my teeth. The thoughts flitted quickly through her mind, and she almost wanted to laugh. It was such a strange compliment, but it was a compliment nonetheless. Kai wasn't used to compliments.

She noticed the cloak fall from the other girls shoulders and had the urge to immediately pick it up and put it back on her, keep her warm. Kai was startled by this, and what startled her even more was Anna's request for her to smile again.

So many things happening all at once, so many thoughts, but one moment. And Kai realized she didn't want to be anywhere else.

Kai had always been uncomfortable with physical touch, and she was tempted to shy away from Anna's hand reaching for her, but she didn't. For a second, she went stiff, and then relaxed, going perfectly still, her endless green gaze still fixed on Anna's.

Then she complied with her request. Hesitantly, Kai smiled again, her real smile. There was a part of her that still worried Anna would turn away and leave like everyone else. The other part however believed that this girl wouldn't leave.

Quite the intriguing girl, this Anna Blackberry. She thought fondly, her smile on full display now, completely still, allowing the other girl to reach out to her.

Anna chuckled when Kai smiled again. What a strange smile, a different smile, one that she never even imagined that existed until this moment. It was entrancing to the shorter girl.
"You really DO look prettier when you smile, hehe!", declared she, just as impressed as the first time the blonde smiled. She was still holding Kai's shoulder when a thought crossed her mind: "Is she really not cold? Isn't it unhealthy to stay in this weather without anything warm to cover you?". That thought made her uncomfortable, even though Kai really wasn't bothered by the cold. Because of that, Anna took the side of the cloak that had fallen away from her shoulder, and put it on Kai's shoulders, still keeping the rest of the cloak on her own shoulders.
"There you go! Now we're both warm!", the shorter happily announced. The cape was, of course, not mad for two people, so it didn't fully the bodies of either girl, but it was enough to cover their arms and shoulders. A win-win or a lose-lose, depending on whose point of view we're talking about. For Anna, it was a win-win; both of them were warm and close. Close, as they were now sharing the same cloak, under the same shining stars, in the breeze of the same cold night. Anna kept her left hand on Kai's shoulder, and with her free one, she pointed at the moon, high and radiant; in fact, it was in its highest moment of the night, which means it should be around midnight.
"Look at that, Kai! The moon looks so bright tonight..! The night sky is so beautiful...", said the girl with a smile. She looked to Kai's green eyes, then to her bare fe and back to the big, glowing moon, and its rays that extended endlessy and covered the entirety of Hogwarts, bathing all of its students in a poetic light. But right now, in this very moment, Anna didn't care at all about the other students of Hogwarts. All that mattered was that the moon stood above them and gifted them the abstract joy of philosophy and reflection, as well as the gift of having met each other in a time like this. "I wish I could stay here forever...Don't you?"

I don't feel so cold anymore...

Kai felt a soft flush heat her pale cheeks as the girl called her pretty again. She found herself already growing fond of being in this girl's company, of listening to her talk. It was a strange feeling, but one that she was very much okay with.

When Anna put the cloak around both of them, Kai was startled. She really wasn't bothered by the cold, and it made her think of her adoptive mother, who never wore a jacket and Kai could hear her saying that the cold wouldn't bother you if you stayed in it long enough. She thought about the times she had spent in the cold, with no protective layering, and how she always felt perfectly fine. And yet, she welcomed the warmth of not only the cloak but the girl standing beside her.

Kai looked at the moon when the other girl pointed it out, murmuring, "It's gorgeous."

In Kai's eyes, Anna was like a little ray of sunshine, and yet she shone brighter than a sky full of stars. Starshine. The nickname entered her mind, and she found she quite liked the sound of it. Anna Jupiter, Starshine.

At Anna's question, Kai found her eyes drawn back to the other girl. "You have no idea how much I would love that." Her response was quiet, her gaze warm.

Not just because of the sky, though, Starshine, she thought.

Darkness is full of beautiful creatures and sweet sorrows, and they should not be ignored if the darkness calls to you

The stars shone upon them with a gentle glowing light, and at some point, both of the girls had connected to the night just as they had connected to each other in the moment they met. Through silence they communicated, and this shared moment of vulnerability and poetic appreciation of their own reflection and philosophical wonder carried them through the late hours, admiring the deep blue sky, its infinity and the celestial bodies that decoreated it, completed it, cherished its beauty by complementing it with their own humble comeliness.
The girls were the sky. Silent, expressive, dark, colorful, so different yet so similar in their ways. Their souls, comfortable and peaceful, wandered from their bodies and expanded under the moonlight, uniting with each other, embracing each other, until one could not be differentiated from the other, and yet their bodies did not touch beyond the hands they were holding. The moon first rised and then fell, was covered by clouds and then it was not, shone along the stars... And it always did. And with it, two little girls, two stargazing lovers, two philosophical witches of uncertain future, shone together.
That night, a girl of blue eyes met and shared peaceful contentment with a witch she had never met, yet had suddenly become important as a childhood friend. That night, material reality had stopped being a concern for the those who felt souls transcending their bodies and mixing themselves with the night air. And that night, one short child with a dark pallete of appearance and beautiful existential pains had been seen in her quietest, most vulnerable state and yet that night she had been named...
"Starshine" by someone whose smile held a somber history of rejection and betrayal.
Starshine had yet to find out what she meant for this world. She had yet to find out that for someone else's reality, she was a beacon of light in the darkness unfound, enough to be thought of as a ray of sunshine brighter than the stars that decorated the vast and far-reaching sky. But now, she didn't feel lost, and she did not remember what was the labyrinth she was despairing over. Besides her, the moon that reflected Starshine's light lost herself in the moment, too. She was beautiful when she was this peaceful. But she had also been beautiful when she smiled, and when she arrived to the Astronomy tower and spoke harshly to someone she had just met. She who was unfriendly and unwelconing was a muse to an art masterpiece that could not look unpleasant or cursed even if her skin was ghostly pale, even if her canine teeth were a little too sharp and her words, too blunt. No; rather, those were but the unique glamours of an eccentric artist with the hearty and hopeful vision of an experienced poet who for too long dwelled upon the matters of life and death, infinity and ephemerality, time and meaning.
And perhaps that was the reason they had painted Kai. And maybe that's why they drew her melancholy like a gentle embrace.
Yet, this moment of serenity, of softness, was just another proof Kai was designed over the layer of a statue of Selene or Hecate. Yes, she, too, was Selene and commanded the moon, and she, too, was Hecate and governed the night. However, nor Selene or Hecate have ever called someone a starshine and held their hand in a cold night. For a moment, Starshine looked up to the moonshine next to her, and in her unburdened mind, a single thought crossed her head.
"You are my moonshine."
Quietly, she looked back to the sunless sky, and allowed this all-present feeling of ataraxia to absorb her body and mind and consume her being.

The moon went down, no longer visible. At some point, two girls looked at each other and knew they had to leave. They had stayed there for so long yet so little, the absolute certainty of a universal understanding of time had been called into question. The gazes of she who shone brighter than the stars and she who encompassed the night were fixed on each other, and then no more. It felt wrong to pull away, as though their souls that had united were torn apart and forced back into their bodies with a part of them missing. It wasn't fair for starshine, who had never felt this incomplete before; not before she had felt this complete. Still, helpless, she looked up to she who encompassed the moon within her eyes, and neither of them had to express either the brief pain of having to let go or the promise of seeing each other again, even in this crowded castle of too many people and too much magic.
A squeeze of hand, then they let go, breaking the only physical link between them. Then, they left.

In the darkness unfound,
Hidden behind one and another cloud,
Still and silent like a mound,
The ripples and echoes of a lake profound

Deep, dark and cold
Though not as bitter as is bold
Even so, hardened and wary
Walling away from as much as the ordinary
Even so, unable to hide its own poetic extraordinaire...

That's you.
That's just you.
Brave, gentle, kind
With a clearly admirable mind
Loyalty overshadows the brash,
And even if for now we have to follow our paths...

If the memory of your starshine remains,
If you still remember this night,
Then... May we meet again,
