"«Этот год подходит к концу, но это был один из лучших его дней, а солнце только что взошло. Спасибо, Колька. Подарок, который ты мне преподнес, бесценен.»This year is ending, but this has been one of its best days – and the sun has only just dawned. Thank you, Kol'ka.* The gift you have given me is beyond measure.”

It was perhaps the truest thing Nikolai had heard in his whole life. Certainly one of the most important and he knew that in this moment his world had blossomed. Deep in the forest with nothing but cold harsh winter surrounding them, the spark of spring had already bloomed in Nikolai's soul and for that Valentin had burrowed his way into a permanent holding in his heart. Everything about the senior boy was radiant perfection in his eyes and he knew with every fibre of his being, every beat of his now lightened heart that this really was the true meaning of family. A family he would fight forever to protect and love no matter the consequence for finally he found someone deserving of it.

Kol'ka. Nikolai had never had a nickname before, he had never let anyone close enough to or perhaps no one had ever wanted to be to give him one. It was such a simple gesture, probably one Valentin hadn't even intended to spur such emotion in the boy but it did. For Nikolai it was a sense of belonging, he resented his name as for all his life it felt distant from himself, like it never really belonged to him. It was a symbol of everything he resented of his family, the person he was forced to become. Kol'ka represented freedom, represented ownership, represented the new person he would finally get the luxury to be. If Valentin allowed the boy would bury his head into his chest and hug as tightly as he could desperate to hold onto the moment for as long as possible. There was a primal nature to the way he clung as Nikolai lost all notion of what an appropriate way to act was and let himself simply feel what he needed, what he wanted. For the first time in his life he was no longer burdened by the conventions of his upbringing as in front of him was all the family he could ever need.

Flipping the tangled mess of blonde hair, that curtained his forehead, out of his eyes his piercing blue pupils drifted up towards the seeker. "You Valentin Schnell, have blessed me beyond words. As long as I live I promise to love and honour you in every way I can. In the course of one morning you have warped my world from a monochromatic prison that seemed inescapable to a kaleidoscope of colour and opportunity. Without you I may have lost myself forever but instead, I feel for the first time that I may truly begin to understand who I am. You have changed my world and I will make it my mission to repay you that blessing. The world and all its people are truly blessed to have you in it Valentin, no one more so than me."

If Valentin allowed Nikolai would then help him to his feet still desperately clutching his hand the warmth from Nikolai's spreading through his cold white skin static gently warming the tips of his fingers. Turning on his feet back towards the lake he led the seeker hoping he would follow to the edge of the water where the rocks had thawed the ice allowing the glistening water to dance with the faint twinkle of the winter sun. Nikolai squeezed Valentin's hand gently in a comforting hold, the warmth spreading up his arms to where unbeknownst to Nikolai scars breached his perfect skin. Scars that mapped out the life of Valentin, that told the story of his life. Taking in a deep breath of the brisk winter air the corners of his mouth began to soften into a bright smile as he said "There really is a whole world out there. I always heard people say it but it never really felt true until this moment. Until today the world didn't belong to me, I lived in a carefully crafted snow globe with a set blueprint for how I was to live in it. Until today I was alone. Now neither of those things are true. If you ever need me, I am your sword, your ear, your council and your family Just as you are mine." Blush flustered the boys cheeks in the snowy expanse but he was not embarrassed, there was no emotion could place to this memory but pure unadulterated joy.

Leaning his head on the boys shoulder as they stared out towards the world that would one day be there's he felt the pangs of sadness begin to creep in. By the positioning of the growing sun Nikolai knew he had but a few minutes left in this moment before he must leave for classes. If he wouldn't have his families support his academics were now more important than ever. Nikolai was determined to make something of himself in this world and if he had to resolve to a life without his blood to do so then that was a choice they determined, not himself. In those final moments there was a pride embedded in his heart, a pride of revealing his true self, a pride that could no longer be pushed down or hidden. From this moment on Nikolai Volkov ceased to exist, for he was now Nikolai Vol'ka.

As Nikolai buried his head in Valentin’s chest, the lithe seeker pulled him ever closer. In spite of the emotional chill that had set in during the preceding months, Valentin’s heart now burst with warmth and adoration. Indeed, it was as if spring had overtaken their little corner of the frigid wilderness on this unexpected sacred morning. The tighter Nikolai squeezed, the more Valentin squeezed back until he couldn’t endure the radiance inside anymore and raw joy escaped as a peal of laughter and a rain of stray tears. Now this was true treasure.

“Kol’ka, Kol’ka, what a blessing you are!” rang Valentin’s crystalline tenor across the quiet lakeside expanse. Lingering in that sweet embrace, the tension melted from Valya’s face as he accepted that he could be happy again. Then, gladly taking the other’s hand to rise back to their feet, if Nikolai did not escape his grasp Val would then lift him up and rock him from side to side within an enthusiastic hug. Putting him back down, Val’s face came back into view as it shone as brilliantly as midday sun. Such infectious ecstasy seemed to radiate like an aura all around him as his chest vibrated with chuckling glee. Columns of amethyst and silver glittered in Valentin’s eyes and he began to relax again, staring back into the other’s blue eyes for a long moment before following Nikolai back to the edge of the lake. Nikolai’s hand reclaimed Val’s while the latter listened, and as the warmth of his spread into Val’s, the seeker felt sensation returning to each fingertip. This young man was no less than the thaw the Frost Captain had been needing after months of silenced desperation. The light dancing across the water soothed the champion's eyes as he felt a boundless serenity wash over him in the waves of liberation coming off the other boy. Opening his heart even further, Valentin closed his eyes and absorbed every sensation of this moment as they etched deeply into his mind. Feeling supremely alive, the seeker ran one thumb over the back of the other’s hand. Grin easing into an expression of inner peace, Valentin knew he was fulfilling his true purpose in life.

“You’re right. There is so much possibility all around us if only we would give ourselves to really believing in it. We forbid ourselves so much out of the worry that things won’t work out, but too often that self-fulfilling prophecy is unnecessary. We can make a better world if we envision that it’s possible. You showed me that today.”

As Nikolai leaned his head on Val’s shoulder, Valentin rested his head atop the other’s in turn.

“Keep me as your found family and I’ll never let you go. You needn’t ever be alone again. Call on me even from afar and I’ll find a way to lend you my power. How beautiful you are, Kol’ka. Be free and let your heart soar! Even when times are hard, if you can just find your way back to this feeling, then you can always regain your true spirit – just as surely as water finds a crack in the stone. Let us remember this moment forever! No one can take your soul away. I’ll take on anyone who dares try. Dear, sweet Kol’ka, you are a gift to this world. You can repay me with your smiles and your laughter and they would be my dearest prize.”

Shifting to pull Nikolai back into another tight embrace, Valentin tilted his head down in a move to kiss the top of the other’s head. The boy’s blonde mane emanated in streaking hairs in every direction like an inverted crown of golden sunlight, and Valentin memorized its scent. Letting go and stepping back, Valentin shot Nikolai a sidelong smile before turning to face the castle.

“It was good that I didn’t have my broom. If I hadn’t been slowed down, hadn’t come back down to Earth, I never would have known the glory that was right here the whole time. Let us go now and take on the day, but climb the dormitory tower if you wish to find me during curfew. I’m never far if you reach for me. My speed will make sure of that.”

Gesturing to invite Nikolai to walk back to class alongside him, Valentin knew his New Year’s Day had come early thanks to the one who now kept his cherished model plane. Happy that the gift had connected them in spirit, Valya would now think of the other whenever he indulged in his secretive studies of muggle aircraft. Between classes for the rest of the day, Valentin would relive the events of the morning and turn its thoughts back over in his head as he considered the wide open possibilities of the future.

It was a strange feeling, after so many years of self isolation, being seen was not how he expected it to feel. Perhaps it was because until this moment Nikolai wasn't sure he ever had been at least not fully. His brothers knew him better than anyone in his life and yet even they were unaware of the truth that lay behind his sullen eyes. Valentin had given him such a gift and as they wandered back towards the institute he watched the smile on his face and hoped that he had given him at least a fraction of that gift himself.

When they hugged it felt like the first real warmth he had experienced in years, like a door he thought was completely sealed finally found a crack where wind had managed to burrow through, a soft soothing breeze. It was but the first interaction the two had ever had and yet the connection was palpable. A thread of string joining them at the hip as they walked that would reach as far as it must to keep them attached. Nikolai's shielding mind would try to spare him from rejection by telling him that it was just simple politeness that held their conversation but there was a new element interjecting that fought to keep the spirit of their interaction.

For that day Nikolai's heart that had been long hardened by steel and ice, started to beat once more. The lifeless creature he had forced himself into was falling away and giving way for a new brighter, truer version of the boy to emerge. As the rest of the day ran on, the young Durm found himself wanting to be seen answering questions in class and smiling for the first time through lessons. For most it was likely deeply concerning but their opinions didn't matter to him, nor ever had. For the first time talking to someone didn't seem like some looming threat but he found he yearned for the times he would climb the tower to meet Val, the times he would see him in the corridors, and the many times they would share in laughter and smiles once more.
