First Day of Classes

Em listened to Viva as she added the fangs to the potion. He sat back as they began to heat the potion, and tentatively started grabbing the horned slugs, four of them, figuring Viva would prefer not to touch them.
Internally, he considered what it would be like if he grew up with magical parents in the muggle world. Though, he’d never triply understand. His family is so engrained in the magical world; coming from an ancient pure blood family.
Em mindlessly poked at the slugs, watching them shrink up in defense, coating his finger with a sticky mucus. When Viva talked about her father losing his job, Em felt frustration begging to brew in his stomach.
“That’s unfair your father got fired. Hopefully he didn’t work in the Magical Accidents and Catastrophes department. My idiot uncle runs that department, and that definitely sounds like something he would do,” he stated almost mindlessly, his disgust toward that part of his family obvious.
“It’s nice that your mom helps people, even as a muggle. I’m sure you’re proud of her. What does your father do now?” he asked, turning back to Viva, and getting ready to add the slugs into their bubbling potion.

First Day of Classes
Speech: #4169E1Being startled by @Emmanuel BourneViva paused as she listened to Em speak. Wait, what?! She thought, horrified. "Uh, um-" Viva stuttered, not really sure what to say to him. She was extremely startled, and her blue eyes were very wide in shock. "Well," she began hesitantly, gripping the edge of the table, potion making forgotten for now. "My father did, indeed, work in the Magical Accidents and Catastrophes department," she admitted. "And I think that means your uncle was the person who fired him." She blinked sad eyes at Em, sorry to learn the news of what his uncle had done. She looked back at the cauldron, slightly embarrassed for some reason. "And now he can't find a job anywhere else," she admitted. "He can't even find a job in the muggle world. My mum's the only one supporting the family right now, and money's tight." Viva blinked, surprised that she had just shared that personal piece of information. "I probably shouldn't have said that," she said as she looked down once again.
Viva sighed and continued working on the potion, trying to take her mind off of the current topic. She really was quite startled to learn that it had been Em's uncle who had completely thrown off her family's home life and transformed them from a normal middle class family into people struggling to get by, worrying about how they could pay the rent for the next month and how they could afford the grocery bills. Viva blinked, and continued working. It's not Em's fault, she reminded herself.

First Day of Classes

Viva confirmed that it was, indeed, his uncle that upturned their lives. Em looked down ashamedly, darkness seeming to fall around his hazel eyes.
His uncle, Zachariah Bourne, is not a friendly man. He was tall, and thin. Muscular arms, and a wide chest. Crew cut black hair, and a dark goatee with steaks of grey. The only resemblance Em shared with his uncle were their eyes, both a lovely Hazel. Em’s, however, were kind and young. Zachariah’s were stern, angry, and lacking laugh lines usually found in men of his age.
Back at his height, his Uncle was a great supporter of Lord Voldemort. Holding the values that many pure blooded families held, and maintained that arrogant mindset to this day. Em knew Zachariah hated his father for marrying a half blood; and took that frustration out on Em whenever given a chance.
Between Em and Viva, the air turned stagnant and tense. They both were looking down at their school work. It was quiet, and stiff for awhile. Em thought of many different ways to respond. He could attest to his hatred of his uncle, or apologize for his uncles behavior.
Though, he ultimately decided neither would make any difference to the girl and her family. There was nothing he could do to change the past; and he certainly couldn’t change the prejudices his uncle held so dear.
Em added the slugs to the cauldron, gave it a stir, and sat back in his seat. He closed his textbook, and sheepishly looked up at Viva.
“My uncle is a cruel man. I’m sorry your family has suffered because of my family. I’m not like that, neither are my parents.” Em ran his fingers through his messy hair, deciding in the moment what his next words would be.
He subtly cleared his throat. “He doesn’t know this yet, but one day I’ll inherit the Bourne estate. Not him, like he thinks. It’s a long story, an ancient family wand chose me - not the one I have from Olivanders - and that has certain…implications. But, my Great Grandfather has seen to it. When that happens, I’ll make sure he loses everything.”
