The new school year has commenced, and as those of us who have been at Hogwarts in previous years readjust to the bustle of daily life, a new group of students are added to the ranks of our houses. For those of you new to the school, reading your first edition of the Hogwarts Headliner, let me give you a sense of what you can expect. Whether you’re a pureblood who’s been preparing for this your entire life or you’re a Muggleborn still adjusting to the idea of magic, I hope you can gain something from this article.

By now, you will have had the experience of being sorted into one of our four houses – a group you might one day call a family if you bond well with your housemates. If you’re pleased with your house already, that’s excellent. However, there are many who feel uncertain or insecure about their house placement, believing they should have been somewhere else. It may be hard, but trust in the Sorting Hat – as they say, it is never wrong. Every house has its merits, and you have been chosen for yours based on qualities that you possess, whether they’re clear to you now or revealed later. You belong where you are.

As you will quickly learn, the corridors can be highly confusing, with talkative portraits walking to different frames, moving staircases of various sizes and shapes, and ghosts who may float by. The school is full of many mysteries and idiosyncrasies, and while you will soon become familiar with some, others will take you years to discover or even be left unknown. There is a lot of trial and error involved in learning your way around, but try not to worry, as there’s generally an older student or two who wouldn’t mind offering directions if you get lost. It’s okay to ask for help – you won’t be alone in your confusion.

You can expect good food, grounds nearly as unpredictable and mysterious as the castle itself, and a wide range of personalities present in your professors. Don’t be afraid to talk to your professors after class or drop by their offices when they’re available – there is much to gain by building a relationship with them. They’re here to help you learn and become capable witches and wizards, and they bring with them a wealth of knowledge from their many varied experiences and backgrounds. treats just by showing up and talking to them. Furthermore, visiting the library, forming a study group, or just studying hard by yourself and staying organised can go a long way. Dedication to your academics early on will help you build good habits and make future learning easier once you have those foundations down. There’s much beyond academics, though. Join one of the many clubs or start your own, try out for the Quidditch team or sharpen your spellcasting skills for duelling – whatever it is you enjoy, whatever you want to do, there will be a place for it somewhere.

Above all, keep your head up when things get hard in the first few months. You may doubt yourself or your place in the school, but I’m confident that you have the ability to excel despite that. Being a first year can be hard, but you will get through it, likely with fun and interesting experiences gained along the way. Good luck to all of you, and I wish you well.
