If someone looks down on you,
Past the shining glory that had been last year's summer Quidditch win and the subsequent hell phase of getting over lightning-caused eyestrain, 2022 had been nothing short of a bonding whirlwind. Between Quidditch BootCamp and the variety of other Horde trainings, it was a small wonder that Johannes had gotten this far into the Hexwizard team without really getting to know most of them at all. He was surviving off of the Quidditch team's overlap and the whole ~ambience~ of everything to float him past the international eye, though he had a feeling that this honeymoon phase of loyal vague acknowledgement would soon start to shift.

Lacking the unironic Durmstrang swagger, this year's cabin members had been randomly chosen, leading to a (he was noticing, with increasing clarity) weird combination of actual pint-sized children and his fellow upperclassmen in the Thestral tent. Lay thine eyes upon the field in which he grew his fucks and revel in its barrenness, for Johannes had very little desire to play token chaperone in a month-long field trip. He'd only signed up for international summer camp because the rest of the Horde was participating, but now it seemed that he wouldn't have anyone on his side to bond over the peculiarities of the international wizarding world.

"Look what the cat dragged in..." Lamenting to himself about the sea of unknown faces he was destined to share a cabin with, Johannes slunk over to an utterly unoccupied bunk and began unpacking his stuff to prepare the bottom bed for the next month. Googly-eyed duffle safely set at the foot of the bed and broom bag similarly stored away, it was only due to years of nerve-ruining chaos that stopped Johannes from startling at the sudden scream of no apparent reason disrupting the peace. Ah, motherfucker... They had one of those kinds of kids. Granted, Johannes himself was the prime example of a stress-inducing, shithead of an extra child (still was) but at least he wasn't in the business to cry wolf for an entrance.

But not all of his cabinmates seemed to ruin his concept of future social peace, for there was another guy about his age sitting at the edge of his bed, watching each new too-young cabinmate enter with an equal amount of increasing dread. A fellow soul, increasingly bewildered and annoyed at each new gap in years. Maybe he could score some semblance of solidarity? Bonus effect of English practice or some shit, not that he really needed it.

Straightening up and clearly addressing his fellow cabinmate, he sent an upwards nod of lazy acknowledgement, already anticipating a month of solo non-interaction amongst their hodgepodge group of people. "Yo. Dunno 'bout you but I'm pretty sure this wasn't meant to be a sign-up for the babysitter's club." He cast a scrutinizing glance around the cabin, feeling increasingly like they were being sent to the kid's table at Christmas dinner. Granted, he's never had a full Christmas table like in the movies, and it certainly wasn't composed of prepubescent kids armed with entire trunks, but it was the thought that counted. "Y'think we could score some coffee sometime? Looks like we're gonna need it." Oh, he could feel the impending headache already, and it was only the first day.

Well, that was something... unexpected. Yevgeny had addressed many people by their first names before, despite the fact that the phrase "many people" in this case included only a few tens, considering he was just twelve. But he had never before witnessed someone whose name he had called out screaming in response. As the boy took out his wand, an even stranger expression appeared on Yevgeny's face, trying to make sense of the situation. Half-jaw-dropping, the scene all of a sudden paralysed Yevgeny's everyday logic. But quite the peculiar approach Vladislav took finally yield the desired outcome for his interlocutor. A Russian phrase, albeit not necessarily a pleasant one, spilt from the kid's lips - and that relieved Yevgeny from his burning curiosity. His guess was right and this fella was indeed the boy called Vladislav.

Yevgeny now was not quite sure if he had done the most plausible thing by approaching the boy in the first place, but he decided to keep his spirit up. Normally, everyone around him could be regarded as crashing bores to varying degrees, and Vladislav was apparently able to alter this situation. Besides, Yevgeny was quite determined not to spend his time at this summer camp all alone. "He might be a nice gu-" he was about to start thinking like that when he heard other 'highly' unexpected words whispered. "Incendio du- what?" He turned his head to Vladislav's bunk in fright. Fortunately, Vladislav was magnanimous and did not wave his wand to burn the cabin. "What an end that would be," Yevgeny amused himself.

"Теперь, мой друг" Now, my friend Yevgeny said in response, "I just wanted to check whether you are Vladislav or not. And that was all." Then he turned his eyes to the direction Vladislav was pointing - their chaperone and an older guy were over there. Yevgeny pursed his lips in a resourceful manner. "Well, I can morally support you, for sure," he responded. "You have my blessing," he continued, "but active participation? I highly doubt it." He half-smiled, "What kind of prank do you have in mind, anyway?"

He was observing those who entered. What they looked like, how they smelled, even who they looked at. He was cataloging this in the back of his head silently, noting where they had chosen to bunk. Yes. most of them were kids, with rare exception. A sigh of relief would escape him when Amadea entered the cabin. She was pretty, sadly not particularly sociable. Disappointing but it gave him a thread of hope that contrasted starkly from the obvious attempt to mainstream that also entered the room. Some kid, young that is who just screamed for no reason. Vladislav just a spontaneously scream out of nowhere. The sort of thing that people that are chaperoned and given plastic silverware do. Some sort of malady or underdevelopment of the mind.

He would not address Vladislav, he had no interest in kids anyways and obviously if the kid was able to be away from his caretaker, he was just going to be weird and he did not want to muster the boy's attention. He was basically not interested. He would approach Amadea instead, standing just a bit adjacent to her as she settled into her chosen bunk. "Hey, I'm Jürgen Hess," he announced in greeting. "Mind if I just stand near you, help you unpack or something?" He offered. "I am just glad that there is someone close to my age," he added. She was close to his age, but he was not sure if she was older or younger than him by a year or two. She had one of those sixteen going on twenty five faces. He was forward, did not mind being upfront or honest. He found there to be no shame in laying hands on the table. "Also, I have nothing to follow this up with but you're the prettiest thing I have seen in Hogwarts since I arrived," a slight French accent would fade as he spoke. He had not spoken much English these past few months, but it was the language he used to primary speak. His natural accent, a strange mix that was hard to place but certainly not French but there were traces now. Not Scottish, Irish or British either, even if there was a poshness that came from London in there also. No, there was something else in his voice that was harder to place.

He was not going to lie to himself or others and say that he wanted them there, to be involved in the cabin and disturbing his or their (as a collective) peace. Further vexed at the notion of having this child that obviously did not belong out on his own, or in possession of a wand, didn't they have a baseline level of capacity required to give someone essentially a WMD. When he said Incendio, he would complain "fucking hell." He could handle a lot, but some random child setting fires or pretending to, to the very places they slept was not something that he was even going to contemplate tolerating. "Reh, well, I thought I was going to feel safe sleeping in here," he muttered near Amadea unless she shooed him off in which he would have promptly complied, returning to the edge of his bed and vantage point for quiet observation.

Regardless of where he ended up, he would find himself being approached by someone he did not know. A face that seemed to relieve him because he did not look like he was 12 or like he needed to leave out instructions for what to do if found for someone to pin on his shirt if he were to go out on an excursion. The relief that washed over him would be plain in his expression. He even uttered a "Thank fucking Merlin," a lad. he did not know him and he did not care, an actual human.

"Yo. Dunno 'bout you but I'm pretty sure this wasn't meant to be a sign-up for the babysitter's club." He was wearing a Durmstrang uniform, a possible act of school pride or a flag that he wanted his ass kicked by the students of that school when they saw the fraud about the grounds.

"I'm not going to be alone," he was immediately relieved.

"Y'think we could score some coffee sometime? Looks like we're gonna need it." He was more a butterbeer and smoke guy, but he could do coffee he supposed.

"Yes," Hess replied without hesitation. "Be an excuse to get out of here," he added. "It is going to be a long summer," he prophesized. "I'm Jürgen by the way," he added presuming that the teen had not overheard his previous introduction. "Actually, you're from Durmstrang, right?" He had a few questions for him.

Sage could easily tell the older boy, Jürgen, did not want to talk to her. Sage focused herself on unpacking her things. Her running blade was pretty much the most important thing to her and it could not be misplaced. She set it beside her bed so it leaned on it and would not fall. Sage was not really sure why she brought her running blade, but Cassie had insisted so she was prepared for anything that came her way. Sage remembered Kora’s surprise when she found out Sage would be gone for a month at summer camp.
“A whole month? Your not sending her away, are you?” Kora had cried as the news of Sage’s departure for the summer. Sage smiled gently at her little sister’s reaction. Sage shook her head and laughed gently.
“Oh, Kora, your exaggerating! I’ll be back before you know it,” Sage had told Kora. Now, Sage was beginning to think she should have just stayed home and told Cassie she would try next year maybe. A few of the others were gathered and talking to each other about who knows what. Sage sighed and leaned back on to her bed. This was going to be a long summer whether Sage liked it or not.

𝓐s soon as she had begun unpacking, a loud scream emerged from across the cabin. It took all of Amadea's strength not to scream in return simply from the shock of the noise. Her hand unconsciously went toward her pocket, checking to make sure that her wand was quickly accessible. What is going on? As she spun around to see what the commotion was about, she noticed another one of her cabin mates attempting to cast Incendio Duo on the bunk bed above him.

"What the hell?!" Amadea exclaimed. She hadn't meant to sound so accusatory or rude, but this boy was playing with fire...literally. Considering her history with the element, Amadea was not in any state to joke around about someone potentially setting the entire cabin on fire. She shook her head and sighed; this was supposed to be a relaxing and fun summer, but her first five minutes inside of her cabin were proving that it might be just the opposite. She wished desperately she could create her own cabin with her friends but alas, she was stuck in this wooden hell-hole with a bunch of younger students who were attempting to cast spells inside of it. Where was the chaperone and why weren't they doing anything?

Amadea felt a presence over her shoulder; she fought the urge to turn around immediately and see who it was. Taking a deep breath, she turned to see another boy standing there. From first glance, it seemed that he was closer in age to her than most of the other students in the cabin so far. That was a relief, at least, she figured. At the very least, she could commiserate with this older boy about the immaturity of their fellow cabin mates. He introduced himself as Jürgen Hess, before offering to help her unpack. She gave him a hesitant smile. "Hi Jürgen," she said, reaching out a hand as a greeting. "I'm Amadea Campbell. You're welcome to stick around. It seems as though our presence is bringing the average age of this cabin much higher than it would be otherwise." He seemed equally as disdainful of the company they were surrounded with, so offering him a reprieve was the only logical thing Amadea could do to help.

Before she could say anything else, he was continuing: "Also, I have nothing to follow this up with but you're the prettiest thing I have seen in Hogwarts since I arrived." There was nothing Amadea could do to fight the blush that bloomed on her cheeks, making her skin match the fiery red of her hair. She focused on the sound of his voice, willing the heat in her cheeks to dissipate and found that she couldn't quite place his accent. It had hints of French, English, and a multitude of other things Amadea couldn't put a finger to in her flustered state. She let out a quick laugh. "I'm flattered, she replied, making eye contact as she accepted the compliment. His eyes were an inviting gold color, shielded by the rims of his glasses and his floppy dark hair brushed against his eyelids, almost as if inviting her to stare deeply into his eyes. Thus, Amadea concluded, he was very handsome. "Though," she continued, "I am left to assume you have only just arrived at Hogwarts." She gestured toward the windows that didn't provide any sort of view of the outdoors. "After all, how could anyone compete with the stunning campus Hogwarts provides?" She wondered what year Jürgen was; he certainly didn't seem familiar but then again, Amadea didn't have the best track record with knowing her classmates.

It was at this moment that another boy entered the cabin and approached Jürgen, falling into conversation about coffee. Trying not to eavesdrop, but being close enough to enter the conversation, Amadea stood awkwardly, unsure if she should pipe in and say something or continue unpacking. After all, it wasn't like she expected Jürgen to introduce her; they had just met too. Her mind was beginning to hurt with all of the thoughts flowing around and the amount of social interaction she had participated in was beginning to feel like too much. But, in a cabin full of people, there was hardly room for a break.

────────────────────────────────────── MAHOUTOKORO ───────────
───
It was Saturday, July 1st, 2023.

What did that particular date mean? The answer was it was time for Hogwarts' annual summer camp!

Last year he'd spent it with Red and Pax, although the latter hadn't really been a choice. This year... Tone didn't think it would be the same. Mostly because he hadn't heard from Red for a long time and wondered if she'd transferred or something and that was why contact had stopped between them. But then again, you could write anywhere, right? Maybe she was just busy and didn't have time anymore. Tone didn't know what to do with the rest of the summer after camp, it wasn't as if his parents wanted him home with the 2 of them.

Of course they'd let him come home if there was no other choice but Tone knew they wouldn't be happy about it. The pink haired teen's best bet was to find a friend to spend the month of August with but at the same time he didn't really feel right asking anyone. He didn't want to inconvenience them. A sigh escaped his lips at the thought and the ever-present smile on his lips disappeared, as he was alone and no one could see. What would he do? Eh, whatever. He'd think about his troubles later. For now, he should focus on camp.

To see what it would be like!

He was sure it would be fun, regardless of what took place and resolved to participate in as much as possible.

After all, it was the best way to make new friends and that was what he planned on doing this year. Well, every time he went somewhere he always wanted to do this, so it came as no surprise that he wanted to continue! Tone stepped through the portkey at Mahoutokoro and emerged on the other side in a familiar place. Hogwarts. Ah, it was good to be back! He could reunite with old friends and make new friends! What more could one ask for? It was a shame Tone wouldn't see Sunny but she'd said she'd be visiting her family.

Poland if he remembered correctly. He kind of wanted to visit sometime in the future but wasn't sure whether he'd be able to. The pink haired teen was curious to find out who he'd be sharing a cabin with at the camp this year as it would be completely random this time. Hopefully at least one of the members would be from Mahoutokoro. Dare he hope that he and Akira share the same cabin? No. He didn't want to go that far. But he hoped at least one member of SNACBASH would be in the same cabin. It would be a bit comforting...

Tone noticed a few familiar faces.

Risto, Yan, Yami, Hia and of course Akira. Kao wasn't there yet, at least he hadn't seen him around.

Upon reaching the cabins, Tone looked at the roster on each of them for his name. The pink haired teen's heart fell a little upon realizing that none of his close friends were in the same cabin with him. What a shame. There was still hope maybe Kao would be with him, as he hadn't arrived yet, but Tone wouldn't hold out any hope. Well, it didn't matter. He could survive without anyone from his inner circle! After all, the point of summer camp was to make new friends and reunite with old ones! He could do this!!! No problem!!!

Thestral Cabin. The Dead Horse Club. What an interesting name. Tone had to admit it sounded pretty cool to him. What would these new people inside be like? He couldn't help but feel excitement surge through him as he followed his guide to the cabin and entered it upon reaching his destination. Earlier, he'd put the schedule he'd been given into his enchanted backpack for safekeeping and was currently wearing said backpack. He also pulled a trunk behind him. The cabin was silent and very quiet which was a bit intriguing.

Upon entry, Tone looked around.

"Wow." He exclaimed in Japanese to himself as he glanced around the room.

Last year the camp had taken place at the London Quidditch Stadium and they'd stayed in tents. Tone hadn't gotten to experience the cabins until now and it was an eye-opening experience! Since he'd been shown to the cabin by a guide, he didn't need to say his name at the door to enter. After all, he wasn't a guest but a resident of the Thestral Cabin. Tone's dark eyes flickered around the cabin. From what he could see there were three boys and five girls already inside. Most of them looked a bit young which was interesting to note...

But there were a few older looking students. However, the majority was more on the young side. Tone himself was older than he looked on the outside. Even though he was going to be a 3rd year, he was already almost fourteen. He'd turn fourteen come September this year. But for him, age didn't matter. He could be friends with anyone, regardless of their ages! "Hey hey hey! You know, we should brighten this cabin up! It's too dark and gloomy right now, summer camp is supposed to be a bit exciting!"

"What should we do to make it brighter?"

"The place needs to be filled with happiness and excitement!" Tone said to all the inhabitants.

He looked at them expectantly for a response to his earlier words. "Ah, I should probably go claim a bunk first, there's no need to lug around all this stuff while we make it more fun and inviting!" The pink haired teen added and made his way over to an unoccupied bed to claim the bottom bunk. Although, he could always be persuaded to move to the top if someone came along and all the beds were taken. For now, he stored his trunk to the side of the bed in the corner, and shrugged off his backpack...

The backpack fell onto the mattress and Tone glanced around him. "Aww, what a cute rabbit and ferret!" He remarked with a smile. If only he'd been able to bring a pet but that would imply he had one.

While awiting Olive's response, Aisley took a moment to observe the other inhabitants of the cabin, seeing as they all had moved into the sleeping area.

The older students, Jürgen Hess, Amadea Campbell, and a few other students who looked to be from Durmstrang seemed slightly annoyed. The pinkish blonde took that as a clear signal to avoid them. They obviously weren't happy that they'd been placed in a cabin with loads of twelve year olds.

A boy, sitting on is bed screamed, making the girl flinch a tiny bit. After all the yelling and fighting throughout her childhood, she didn't exactly appreciate the sudden loud noised coming from the boy.

Another girl, who'd introduced herself to Jürgen earlier, had moved to claim another lower bunk, sighing dejectedly.

The only person who'd seemed remotely happy was the boy who just entered the cabin, going on about how they had to brighten the dreary place up. Aisley agreed silently, watching as he began to lug his items over to a bed, commenting on Misty and Olive's ferrert. Aisley pused up her gasses, muttering a thanks to the boy.

Moving to lie down on her bunk, she sighed. So far, the thestral cabin seemed quite fitting for the inhabitants, the negative energy practically rolling off of everyone.

If things didn't liven up soon, Aisley was in for a long summer.

''Hi Aisley! A pleasure to meet you too'' Olive greeted back the girl who had just introduced herself. She seemed warm and sweet, which was exactly what Olive needed right now in the midst of sulky faces. '' I'm Olive, Olive Campbell.''

Imitating her new acquaintance, she looked around at the new people entering the cabin and felt judged by the older students. But what was she expecting anyways? Olive wasn't even a first-year, why would anyone feel comfortable with her? '' Aisley, just out of curiosity, how old are you? As in, what school year are you in? '' Olive asked out of curiosity. Even tho she looked closer to her age, it was worth asking, just in case.

Whilst waiting for Aisley's answer, Olive's gaze went back to the people entering the cabin, specifically the guy that had just entered the cabin and was animating everyone to decorate and make this place a bit more cheerful. She really did appreciate his enthusiasm, but she was not sure that the older, sulkier people would, however, she did not pay any attention to that. At the moment, she was only paying attention to him when he went up to her and Aisley and complimented their pets.

'' Thanks! '' She said, giving back a smile. She would definitely help him out with the decorating if only she had someone else to help her. '' Aisley, don't you agree with him? I think we should decorate for sure. I've started a bit already, but it needs a few more things - I've been meaning to make origami garlands or something similar for my bunk bed. Also, I have a few posters that I brought from home which I would like to hang up, maybe you could help me? '' she suggested.

The posters themselves, however, Olive had not thought through when bringing them for vacation. Since she was raised in the muggle world, she listened to yes, muggle music. Specifically Taylor Swift. And her posters were of her albums. Now that she was indeed realizing that maybe bringing them to a place full of witches and wizards was not the best idea, instead of pulling them out like she was initially doing, she put them back inside her suitcase, her smile fading slightly.

Reuben was visiting Hogwarts for the first time, and to be honest, he was excited to see what the most famous wizarding school would look like. He was even more excited to meet so many new people, all from different places around the world. The first impression that he had gotten on seeing Hogwarts was that the school was huge. He wondered what it would be like to live here.

Reuben made his way to the Campgrounds, following many others to find his way there. He knew they weren't going to be living inside Hogwarts, and that was how he liked it. He loved the outdoors and he especially loved being able to see the sky at night.

As soon as he came to know which tent he was in, he sighed. Thestral. Death. Depression. Sadness. That was the complete opposite of who he was. However, that did not mean that he couldn't make it cheerful and fun to be in. After all, you should never judge a book by it's cover, should you?

Reuben entered the tent, noticing people cast weird looks at him and shrugged, wondering what those were all about. To be honest, he was quite surprised by the fact that the tent didn't look so bad after all. It looked cozy, and it would sure as hell be comfortable enough to live in for the next month. It wasn't as bright as Reuben would have liked, but it wasn't as gloomy as he expected either.

"Hey everyone! I'm Reuben, how about all of you?", he asked, speaking in English. Might as well introduce himself to the people who he was going to spend the rest of this month with. He looked at the list of names and smiled. At least one name was familiar to him. Alemayehu was yet another person from Uagadou, and they were pretty good friends.

Reuben looked around and noticed many faces. Some people were elder, while some were his age. However, Reuben was pretty sure that age wouldn't matter. He was excited to meet all the new people, and maybe form long-lasting relationships with them.

If someone looks down on you,
Overhearing his fellow cabinmates’ oblivious chatter about livening the peaceful cabin up, Johannes sent a side-eye of severe judgement — already dreading the magical power of friendship and early bird worm hunts or whatnot. If this interior decoration was dark and gloomy, then Johann's definition must have flown the coop directly into the Forbidden Forest. The Thestral cabin, contrary to the ominous namesake, had the equivalent aesthetic to a particularly aesthetic Pinterest beach house, 15 different shades of pale neutrals and divan included. They really couldn’t get brighter in color scheme without sucking all the saturation out and ruining even a sad beige baby’s bedroom. Johannes was all for customisation and decoration, but such an inaccurate description of the cabin certainly fuelled his growing exasperation.

He refocused on his conversational partner (and their awkward exclude?) with only a couple more shades of relief that even the younger ones in his friend group weren’t as hard to handle. At least, if they were that changed quick enough not to both her overmuch. “Damn right I’m from Durmstrang. Portkey this time, no fancy boat to stir up the Lake.” Still clad in his militaristic uniform, Johannes had foregone his normal wardrobe in some hope that he’d find some solidarity in his fellow schoolmate between their unpredictable cabin assignments, but the only person of significance he’d seen outside of the cabin was a random flaming redhead with an admirably modified Hogwarts uniform passing by.

He’d been meaning to accessorise his uniform for a while now, come to think of it… But he was edging on his last few years at the Institute, so any possible violations to their uniform code would probably tip the already-precarious balance of teacher opinion. “What of it?” Durmstrang, past its obvious flaws in moral capability, was arguably the best wizarding school by sheer virtue of its student body and Johannes was nothing but a loyal Horntail. Reaching out of his social range, typically a fairly uncharacteristic prospect, didn’t seem so unnecessary when it came to a fellow male upperclassmen in the face of a month-long supervision period. “ Johannes, at your service.” Though their ginger spectator hadn’t made much of an impression, he introduced himself to each with fairly polite eye contact. “Excuses are my middle name… though I don’t know if we could find an I.D. between the doe-eyes and stick-in-the-muds.” He cracked a grin at Jürgen, all light-hearted relief and inviting banter.
