The Accident and the Engraved Apple PV Mellani Miller Finished

"I thought you'd never ask", said Mellani with a smile.

Simon was somewhat surprised. This was her chance to decline any further interaction. He had almost expected Mellani to say 'no' and come up with an excuse to study alone, but he was happy that she accepted his offer. His impression of Mellani from the classes during this first day was that she was a thoughtful and clever person. He could benefit from that and perhaps he would also be able to help her, in case she needed any help. His Muggle mother's words echoed in his head: "Remember, honey, peer learning is the best way to learn". She was a professor at the university, after all. Simon looked up to his mother, believing that whatever she said, she probably had a good reason for it, being as wise and knowledgeable as she was.

"Okay", he said, making a move towards the exit. "Let's find somewhere else then."

He did his best trying not to look over his shoulder to the balcony where the smirking students had been as they left and threw the engraved apple in the nearest trash. After all, it was only a stupid joke and it was only an apple. Besides, if the accident had not happened, then Mellani would probably not have approached him. At least, that was how he liked to see it.

"So, what did you think of the classes today? And what do you think your favorite subjects are gonna be?", asked Simon as exited the doors.

Mellani noticed the surprised expression on Simon's face as she accepted his offer and decided to ignore it. For a first day, Simon had been through a lot, and it was natural for him to feel like Mellani might not want to hang out with him. She gave him a reassuring smile.

Mellani followed him to wherever he wanted to go. She knew that he must be pretty traumatized because of everything that had happened in the library and probably needed a change of scenery. Mellani glanced at Simon looking over his shoulder at the balcony and wondered why such people existed in this world. Why couldn't people just be good and kind for once? What was so wrong in being a good human being, or at least letting someone live a peaceful life?

Mellani was glad that this incident had lead her to meeting Simon. It made her see the bright side of things. As the saying went, every cloud has a silver lining. When Simon asked her which subject she liked and how the classes went, she shrugged. It was a hard question. Being used to boring muggle subjects like geography and mathematics, charms and potions were quite a surprise to her. She'd loved being able to brew potions and cast spells.

"I mean... They were a lot better than the subjects at muggle-school. The were also really fun, but they felt really different somehow. I'm just so used to normal stuff, I never expected this. I think I like Charms, though. I haven't decided yet. What about you?", she asked. It was only then that she realized that she had revealed that she studied in muggle-school, which meant that she had revealed that she was muggle-born. She didn't know how Simon would react to that news, and the thought was enough to trouble her. Would he bully her for not being pure-blood? Only time would tell.
