2023, Stage 3 Gryffindor vs Ravenclaw: Match 9

Whatever doubt that had filled his mind moments before was replaced as the Slowing Charm hit him. Galton understood this new feeling very well. Sluggish. It was quite the opposite to his normal quick-footed nature. But at least we has in the warm embrace of his fog. The lovely, milky, cover that made him feel just a bit more secure in his position. A silver lining to the unfortunate first round hit.

As he poised himself for the next bout he took a moment to take in just how restrictive his muscles had grown. And which moves would no longer be possible. He felt a bit like his body had suddenly grown much younger - before his reflexes had matured to what they are now. But it was also a bit exhilarating. Odds stacking against - a proper challenge.
Action: Challenging his muscles

Well this really WAS a strange duel. The fog was thick, and it must have been extremely hard to see. As Callie Jensen (who Jake noted with approval had very good sportsmanship) tried to take stock of where her opponents were, Pericles tried to make things easier on everyone. Jake watched as the fog began to lighten - lighten enough for him to see Elsa casting a spell of her own. And so Jake saw a strange sight - one he had never seen before in a duel. As the fog began to sweep away, smoke began to sweep in. The air grew even thicker than it had before and the new visibility was gone as quick as it had come. Jake scratched his head. "Well, I guess that didn't work..." he said, with a shrug at Pericles

As for Galton, his honed reflexes after years of experience and practice would be struggling against the slowing charm that had taken hold of him. And perhaps it threw him off more than he could have expected. For when he would try to cast a spell at Callie that would make it hard for her to move and even the odds, nothing would come out of his wand at all.

So in the end, all that happened was a change in the weather. "The fog is clearing, but smoke is rolling in from the west." Jake commented, feeling much more like a weatherman than a duel captain. Maybe he'd get to see the first ever duel where nobody got hurt at all!

Nicky wasn't sure if this was how she wanted the duel to go but it could have been worse. She simply needed to stay focused and she would do that until her team won. They had to win, there was no other option, especially after the terrible loss she suffered in the previous duel. She would not let that happen again. And her team would be very proud of her.
Rawr.

As the fog rolled out and smoke rolled in, Pericles glanced to the referee, catching Jake's shrug and quirking a frown. Things were off to a gruelingly slow start. "I think they're stalling," he called to Callie through the haze, but for what, he had no idea. "Why don't we switch things up?"
Action: As strategized.

It hadn’t taken long. At this point it was almost a certainty of the universe that at some point he would fail to cast anything. This time he was just lucky that it had only been a failure to cast, and not a disastrous one.

It was, of course, Galton’s fault though. He’d ignored Mr. Wand, and he knew the penalty if his wand thought it was being taken for granted. Or if Galton was playing it too safe, not fueling the Wand’s insatiable lust for power. Galton would start with an apology to Mr. Wand. Open up the hostage negotiations with his benevolent magical captor. Mr. Wand’s severe lack of foresight - it’s inability to see any sort of setup for a plan - was getting old. But maybe that was expecting too much from the sentient stick.
Action: Once again pleading with Mr. Wand

At the mention of trying something new Callie gave her teammate a firm nod accompanied by a grin. This wasn’t at all what she expected to happen but then again these duels always came with a chunk of the unknown. After giving Pericles a thumbs up of agreement she turned her focus back to the matter at hand. This work wasn’t done, in fact it had not even begun.

And just like that, all the set-up for the duel was done, and then it REALLY began. Two rounds of just setting the stage, and suddenly, the spells began to fly. The spells began to fly EVERYWHERE! Jake felt the urge to duck for cover himself when suddenly what seemed like a billion spells began to zip across the stage. Ok, maybe not a billion, but the Ravenclaws had said they were going to switch things up and they really weren't joking.

At the same time, dual Fire spells and Wind spells shot forward from the Ravenclaw team - an all-out attack, four spells at once. Jake watched the fires light through the smoke, and the wind jinx pushing smoke away as it turned, but somehow the Gryffindors were left without a scratch. There was so much smoke it was hard to even see their targets, and the Ravenclaw spells criss-crossed, one swerving wildly at Galton who somehow managed to get out of the way even with his body moving so slowly. The other spells sailed just past their opponents, who might have felt them zooming by - just managing to miss them in what would feel extremely close. Somewhere in the chaos, a blindfold spell would head for the Ravenclaw team, missing its mark as well in the smoke.

The Ravenclaw strategy made sense, Jake thought. If you can't see your opponents, just send LOTS of spells and hope that one of them managed to hit someone. After all, how can you be accurate when you can't see? It was sort of like playing Battleship or something. Unfortunately for the Ravenclaws, it hadn't worked...yet. The smoke began to settle and clear away, and Jake sighed. At least now he'd be able to see what was going on again.

...And then the fog rolled in.

The barrage was a beautiful thing, fire and wind howling through the Fumos smoke, whipping it away as the attacks barreled towards their opponents... and missed. Pericles was dumbfounded. His focused face went slack in astonishment, then scrunched in irritation as a fresh fog rolled in. "What are they playing at?" he hissed in Callie's general direction, somewhere in the cloud. A quarter of the match had already elapsed and there was no damage to account for. He braced in preparation for an attack, squinting and straining his ears, wand clutched in a tight fist.
Action: As strategized.

Now this got the blood pumping. There was just something about pushing yourself as far as possible in a dire situation that set Galton's brain to 200. With the sheer amount of magic being lobbed at the Gryffindor side he couldn't imagine it wouldn't get some blood pumping in his partner. The hairs on his body perked up in response to the incoming fire, providing the automatic reflex to avoid the first fireball. He had wondered, given his current slowed state, if he'd still be able to do that. But it seemed that as time wore on, he was figuring out how to operate.

But as much fun as he was having dodging spells, he couldn't let it dominate his attention. Mr. Wand needed his dues. It seems in some manner, Galton's efforts had done something, even if it was about as minimal as possible. Mr. Wand had seen fit to grant Galton's wish, allowing his sloppy excuse of an incantation to come to fruition. Beautiful, thick, milky fruition.
Action: Thanking Mr. Wand for the blanket
