As Alex pondered about Anna’s answer and petted Helga, Anna took out the pear and set it next to the ferret. She hoped that the little critter could eat it. She took a bite of her sandwich, leaving the other one for Alex. He seemed very excited when Anna mentioned her horses. “Yeah! My maman grew up in France, and my family has a business there, taking care of Abraxans. Since we moved to England she wanted me to have something, or better, someones to always remind me that I have a home there as well”. Anna didn’t remember anything of living in France, they moved to England when she was just four. They occasionally visited their cousins there, but it was more likely that the cousins would come to Britain.

Then she listened as Alex talked about Helga. She seemed like a lovable companion. She smiled as Alexander tentatively called her a friend. She smiled: “I’d love to be your friend”. She looked at Helga. “Don’t worry Helga, I won’t be stealing him from you”, she said half jokingly and then giggled. When Alex spilled a bunch of questions about her horses, he did not know what he just set free. And that was Anna’s capability to talk on for hours about what she loved. “They are quite big, but Noir and Lune are still foals so they haven’t reached their full height. Right now they are a bit bigger than regular horses. Usually they have gold or light coats, but Noir is dark, almost black and Lune is silverish. They are headstrong and stubborn, but they do form bonds with humans who love and respect them. They know and trust me, but if say, you were to just approach them they could become hostile if they think you’re a threat. And yeah I can ride them! Maman thought me. It’s so freeing soaring high above the clouds, wind in your hair”, she leaned back on her arms, her sandwich abandoned on the blanket, as she enjoyed the slight breeze.

“It is so much more than riding brooms. I don’t have any trust towards those pieces of wood”, Anna scrunched up her nose. “Do you play Quidditch? Oh, have you ever flown on anything other than brooms?”, she was still thinking about her dear horses, calculating how much longer ‘till she can go home back to them.

Alex experienced a feeling of fulfilment upon observing Anna's genuine interest in Helga. Despite the fact that many people regard kindness as a facade of self-importance and insincerity, Alex had always considered it to be an essential virtue. As Helga enjoyed the slice of pear given to her by the young eagle, everyone in the vicinity appeared contented. Alex's green eyes would gleam with tenderness whenever he recognized Hogwarts as his true home, which was the case at present, due to the pleasant season and the harmonious universe. The sun's rays were uniformly spread over Anna's dark hair, Alex's blond locks, and Helga's spotted fur.

Anna's words revealed to the young boy that a portion of her family resided in France. This information left an impression on Alex, who had long held a fondness for France and its language. "I wish I knew French," he thought wistfully. However, Alex was roused from his daze by the next sentence from Anna, who responded positively to his hesitant offer of friendship. A broad grin illuminated Alex's face as he reached for the sandwich that Anna had left for him. Although he felt awkward accepting a treat from someone he had just met, his shyness gradually subsided when it came to forming new friendships. Settling onto the grass, he laid his legs out and propped himself up on his right elbow, saying, "The pleasure is mine." Then Alex's eyes shone with keen interest as he avidly absorbed Anna's detailed information about the Abraxans, fueled by his own passion for learning.

As the conversation shifted from Abraxans to broomsticks, Alex realised he had much to share about the topic as he had a complicated relationship with the art of flying. "If you had asked me a few months ago," he quipped with a gleeful roll of his eyes, "I would have said that brooms were terrible inventions!" A small laugh escaped him, causing his body to lose balance on his elbow. Although he blushed, he pretended nothing had happened to conceal his embarrassment. "Well..." he trailed off for a moment, trying to regain his composure and overcome the distraction his clumsiness had created in his mind. "Ah, yes, brooms..." He took a quick breath. "Flying has never been a favoured practice in my family, and I inherited that belief. I was determined to avoid riding a broom unless it was absolutely necessary. But after giving it a try, my perception changed. Brooms, apparently, are not bad inventions at all. I even joined the Quidditch team's tryouts! Who knows, maybe one day..." He took a bite of his sandwich. "However, I must admit that I'm still not a hooligan. Though I've developed a love for fair and chivalrous competition, I haven't strayed from my values enough to become a die-hard follower of the Quidditch league!" He laughed, balancing his body with ease this time. "What about you, Anna?" he asked. "Unfortunately, I don't think there are any sports involving Abraxans. Are you a sports enthusiast?"

Anna enjoyed the pleasant warmth of the spring sun on her face, with a soft wind in her long hair. She lit up as both Helga and Alex accepted her treats and they all enjoyed the food together. Anna was prone to making friends here, and she has met so many people by now, it felt like a dream come true to her. Before she never had true friends but now she had so many and she just gained one more!

Alex started talking about his opinion on brooms, and she listened chewing silently on what was left of her sandwich. Alex laughed a bit, and as he was leaning onto his elbow he slipped a bit, making a sheepish face he pretended nothing happened, trying to continue his talk. Anna, like a little lady she was, pretended she didn’t notice anything and continued the conversation. “Well I have also tried riding a broom. I however ended up upside down on it, and if a very kind person hadn’t helped me, I probably would have landed face first on the ground”, Anna chuckled a little at the memory, it certainly wasn’t funny then, but now it seemed just a little silly. “So I will not be getting into that anytime soon”, she said as she finished her sandwich.

She thought for a bit about his other questions. “I don’t think I am. I did go to a Muggle Horse Show, that was pretty fun. But other than that I’m not really a fan of sports”. Her gaze fell onto her discarded book. “Oh! Shall we continue reading? That is what we came here to do didn’t we?”, she giggled, “The time sure flies by, we should read a bit before it gets too dark”. She was enjoying the chat they were having, but she also wanted to finish her adventure, and since Alexander would be reading with her, they’d still be hanging out. She was glad she could share her love for books with another person.

There were several disadvantages of being content with himself - such a man would not crave building relationships with people around him. Nor did he feel the urge to make friends, not because he was necessarily aloof, but because he was satisfied to be alone. That was the main story of Alex's first months in this charming castle. Having spent some time here, though, he became more and more social. His fellow badgers were pleasant enough to spend time with, plus, there were several students Alex found quite kind, helpful, and funny to hang around. Anna was proven to be one of them. Alex was sincerely happy now that he had taken the first step, as his hesitant greeting apparently yielded a good friendship.

Spending a lovely sunny day with a new friend, alongside his loyal ferret, talking about books and their various experiences, and sharing delicious sandwiches made Alex feel truly grateful. He slightly chuckled with Anna after she shared one of her experiences regarding riding a broom. Alex knew the sentiment, since if it had been a few months ago, Anna's dislike for brooms would have resonated with him. His views concerning Quidditch had become somewhat positive these last days, yet he loyally continued to find the obsessive interest in the sport a little awkward.

When he heard Anna's suggestion, Alex agreed. They had both come here to read after all, and if they kept on chatting, they wouldn't have much time. A smile of approval appeared on Alex's face. "Yes, yes," he said sincerely. "We have indeed to get back to reading." He ran his fingers over Helga's hairy head, then put his book back in front of him. "Thanks for the conversation," he said gently, "it was very enjoyable." Flipping through the pages of the book, searching for where he had left off, "I hope we get a chance to chat again. For now, have a good read!" Alex said.

Both turned their gaze from each other to the magical world of books. A sweet wind swayed Alex's hair gently. Helga snuggled up to Alex's knees, preparing to slumber. Alex read the sentence for perhaps the fiftieth time: "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit."

Having met a lot of new people in a short amount of time she was at Hogwarts, Anna found she got along the most with gentle people, the ones who were a walking ray of sunshine, people who liked helping others and were very kind in general. And that was how she would describe Alex. She did just meet him, but just his presence was warm and happy, she couldn’t help but feel comfortable and content in his presence.

He quickly agreed with her, about reading, thanking her for her company. Anna averted her gaze to her book, feeling a little bashful. No one really thanks others for their company on a whim, do they? “It was my pleasure”, she smiled at him. Opening her book yet again, it didn’t take her long to fall into its world and forget the one around her.

They have been reading in each other’s company for hours. The breeze was consistent as the sun slowly set over the horizon, and too soon it was getting hard to read. Anna stretched, closing the book, she was close to finishing it, and she would surely read it more tonight, but it was getting a bit cold, and dark out. Smiling she stood up and offered a hand to Alexander. They picked up their stuff, Anna putting everything away into her basket, putting her book at the top. They walked together for a bit to the castle, saying their goodbyes at the stairs, one going up and the other down. As Anna ascended the stairs she couldn’t keep a smile off her lips. She made another amazing friend.
