Do I dare?
by Serena J. Towers
A season of hope,
one of change and renewal.
Growth all around us.
Flowers blossoming,
nature is healing itself,
the snow is melting.
It is almost time.
Change is inevitable.
But I'm not ready.
Spring - what will you bring?
The secret that I hold dear -
do I dare to grow?

Dear Reader,
Every pureblood family has a deep dark secrets that they do their best to keep hidden - whatever it is. Well, this writer has uncovered the secret held over at the Towers Tower, I suppose. The secret that they thought they buried deep enough that no one would ever find out but secrets cannot be kept from me.
In fact, it isn't just one secret. As it turns out, there are multiple that have come to light. Let me start by sharing the secret surrounding the youngest child - Serena Jodha Towers - who is also how this secret was discovered. She outed herself and her family, perhaps by mistake, perhaps by stupidity.
Have you ever noticed how short she is? More than that, have you ever noticed how long her fingers are or how pointy her ears are? Yes. Pointy. Much like her father's ears, in fact. And yet - not like her brother's. Or should I say, "brother's"?
It looks like there may be much more to this secret than the so called "purebloods" want to pretend there is. Not only do they appear to have their "pure" blood mixed with the inferior Goblin blood, they also appear to have an illegitimate child.
The Oberoi family might pretend to be high and mighty but it looks like their line has been mixed with impure blood. Not only impure but inferior. As much as they hide it, it has become evident in the youngest child's appearance - and the fact that she is donning goblin made armour on a daily basis.
Oh boy, oh boy, I for one am excited to see how the community reacts to this. The Oberois might pretend they don't know but Lazarus Towers is, clearly, also hiding his heritage from the world and, surely, they know. Their illegitimate child - their oldest who towers over the rest of them and is far too tall to have share the same blood - is proof of that.
The Pureblood Secret Spiller xoxo

Serena frowned for a moment, as she paused in thought at the question, "You want me to tell you my best joke? Oh uh well, I am not very good at telling jokes. I can try but uh, I don't think I have one off the top of my head. Hm, give me a few moments to think of something." She pondered looking up something for a few moments. "Alright, you want a joke... let's see... Uh, let me think about this. Hm." It took a good few minutes before she clapped her hands in excitement, "Oh! I have a good one! My father told me it once when we were talking past a potioneer's store and I thought it was pretty funny. So - why did the wizard throw away all his old potions?" She paused for a moment, for an answer before breaking into a smile, "They were past their hexpiration date! Get it? Eh? Hexpiration date, eh eh?" She looked way too proud of herself.

Serena stared at the cold ground beneath her. She was alone outside. It was technically almost spring and yet, it seemed to be snowing almost every other day. Today was slightly better. The sun was out, at least and although the wind was bitter cold, it was not snowing. There may have been other students around but she paid little attention to any of them. Even Pizza Rat was not with her today. He was cuddled up in the warmth of her common room. Rubbing her hands together, she tried to warm them up a little as she sat cross legged on the grass, with a giant winter coat surrounding her and a scarf that made it a little harder to breathe.
She was definitely covered. Her hood was up, her face was almost entirely blocked and as soon as she shoved her hands into her pockets, they were warmer - why did she forget her gloves? The cold did not really bother her much today though. The young Hufflepuff had left the warmth and familiar comfort of her dorm to get a few moments to herself to think, allowing the cold bitter winds to hit her face. She had almost been tempted to fly but her heart felt too heavy to even get onto a broom. Her heart was full of fear and yet, there was a small glimpse of hope. A part of her that was saying that maybe, just maybe, she should be brave. That maybe, just maybe, it was time and this was the right thing to do.
Seventeen. She would be seventeen in a few months. That was a full fledged adult in accordance with the law. She should be old enough and more than capable enough to make this decision by now - but she wasn't. It hurt. The fear had prevented her from speaking up for years. It had taken over her mind and body. And in this fear, guilt was born. She felt guilty to her friends that had to go through hardships alone - because she was not brave enough. She felt guilty to her father for even considering doing this and yet, she wondered if it was fair of him to ask such things for her. Of course, she understood why he did and she understood that he had likely gone through all of this himself. Serena did not want to make the same choices he made.
The Goblin hated those choices. She did not want to lie to people. More than that, she did not want to live her lie. Her entire life would not be a lie, it could not be something she was ashamed of. She had to do this. She knew she had to do this.
Anxiously, she rubbed her hands together again as though she was trying to keep them warm. It was just fidgeting at this point. A droplet of water hit one hand. Then another. Several droplets hit her before she realised that she was crying. The tears streamed out of her face as she burst into a full cry, not holding back the feelings that gnawed angrily at her heart.
It was time. She had to learn to be brave enough to stand up amongst the tallest giant and be proud of who she was. Silence would do nothing but cause the fear in her heart to grow. It was finally time to forge a new path ahead for her, for her entire family. It may be the wrong one, but she would not know until she walked down it. It was time to be selfish in her desires and stand up for herself. She would not be silent any longer.

She had absolutely no idea what she was doing. This was not similar to metalworking at all! The concept was kind of similar, at least, but the material was entirely different. “Ow-” She grumbled to herself as she accidentally pricked herself for what felt like the thousandth time. In reality, it was probably more like the tenth time but accidentally poking herself with a needle was not Serena’s idea of fun. This was a stupid hobby! The worst thing that came with metalworking was being careful not to burn yourself - because melted metal was incredibly hot, as was the furnace. Both dangerous. In theory, this should probably be a lot less dangerous! People sew, stitch, embroidered and what not all the time!
For some reason though, she was just struggling to grasp the concept. Perhaps she needed a teacher. That would probably be more handy that just trying to stare at images and try to figure this out. The library would likely have better guides, at the very least. So far, Serena had managed to figure out how to thread the needle - which, if she was being honest, took far longer than it probably should have. Despite her incredible eyesight, she would find herself frowning as one of the strands insisted on not getting threaded. Or worse, it would fall out right after she successfully had managed it. She had managed to loop it around, tying a knot on the end and now, it seemed to work!
The next step was trying to actually sew. This part sounded easy but it was far harder than it actually sounded - or looked. It was not as simple as ‘needle into material, out the other side and repeat’. There were so many different types of stitches and just looking at the variety of options was confusing. Her attempt was far messier than the clean examples that other people would do. There were a few knots that probably should not be there and yet, she could not really figure out how to remove them without starting over! Maybe if she cut the thread? But then it would probably all come undone.
The Hufflepuff sighed softly as she held up the sample piece of fabric - an old t-shirt that she had cut apart to practice on. She frowned at Pizza Rat, “Don’t judge me,” She grumbled as she continued to try and stitch a small blanket together from the old fabric. She would have to find something to stuff inside it before she sealed it close but she felt like it was probably one of the easiest things she could make. It was literally meant to be two pieces of rectangle fabric, sewn together on three sides, filled up with some sort of filling that would keep it warm before it is sealed on the last side. That was the theory of it. In reality, she could see gaps between the edge of one piece of fabric and the other as she had not sewn it tightly together in some parts.
How could the Goblin literally mould metal and imbue it with magical properties and yet, she struggled with the basic concept of sewing? That was ridiculous. She would not give up, no matter how many times she pricked herself on the needle. By the end of this, she would have a little handmade blanket for her little (yet rather old) rat.

WC: 138
Spell Name: Cuteness Overload Spell
Incantation: Cutenifors
Pronunication: KYOOT-knee-fors
Type: Charm
Light: Rainbow (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet)
Wand Movement: Create an arch from left to right and then bring it to your lip as you whisper the incantation onto it before leaning it away, as though you are blowing a kiss with your wand.
Effect: From the tip of your wand, once you have moved it away and pointed it away from you, a burst of rainbow light appears. From there, a cute narwhal comes out. It dances around by bopping around with a smile on its face. Everywhere it moves, it leaves a trail of glitter and sparkles after it that glimmer in the air for a while. The glitter just floats around, falling a little to add a 'dancing' effect to it.

WRITING - 7. Short adventure story
(under 500 words, over 100 words)
Status: Completed
WC: 463
Notes: Not a canon piece but I wanted to write a little about what she might have done during her pre-Goblin adventures to find out about it so tried to write something. May turn this into an official solo one day. For now, consider it an AU.
Dated Years Ago, Before she found out she's a Goblin
An inaudible breath was released from the young girl's lip. She looked to her shoulder for a brief moment, keeping her eye on the brown rat on it before gently tucking on the cloak that she had wrapped over her body. The cloak was vital. It helped her stay invisible - and right now, she needed to be. Serena crouched low, walking on her tiptoes as quietly as she could as she stuck to the wall. Never in her life had she been so quiet but she was doing everything possible to stay silent. She needed to know.
Her father was hiding something, she was sure of it. She had to know. As far as he knew, she was already in bed and fast asleep. Yet she had followed him outside. He entered Diagon Alley, followed by Gringotts - which she had no idea would even be open at this time. He had left Gringotts about fifteen minutes later but she had no idea what he had done inside as she did not have the guts to follow him in. However, he stopped in an alleyway on the way back home shortly after and started conversing with someone but she could not really hear them.
Her eyes widened slightly as she caught the words. That- That made no sense. It wasn't English but she understood them. No- wait- that was not the issue. The issue was that the other person also understood it and replied in the same- but- the language was one that her father had taught her. It was a made-up language between the two of them, wasn't it? That was what he had told her. Who was this other person and why did they know it too?
She could not fathom the reason. Serena stared at the other person, trying so hard not to get caught. They did not look familiar. He was a bit shorter than her father was though and had - her eyes widened as she spotted his slightly pointed ears that were on display. This made no sense... Or rather, things were starting to finally make sense and she was not entirely sure where it was going - or if she liked where it was going.
Serena could not hear what the conversation was about but she crept closer to try and pick up more. "Is maadk su ba kemorekad bae Mumdoae, rosaks. Wa com dareqar aqaraesrems susasrar. I'rr kaa aeui sram? "It needs to be finalised by Monday, latest. We can deliver everything together. I'll see you then?" in Gobbledegook" She heard the other person say before the pair parted ways after her father seemed to agree and they said their goodbyes. What... was happening?
Without hesitation, she quickly followed her departing father back home and snuck back into the house after him - quickly getting back to her room with Pizza Rat.

She gritted her teeth, clenching her fist into a tight ball in frustration as she stood there staring at the blades of grass beneath her feet. This was not okay. She knew she had to do something but what was a question that she had limited answers to. There was not much she could do, if she was honest. Anyone else would have been better. But the issue was that there was no time and no one was doing what needed to be done. If nothing else, she trusted Hugh and that was enough for her to do everything she could to get this sorted.
Her attention snapped to Pizza Rat, who had successfully pounced onto the little jelly slug that she had thrown on the ground. She sighed softly, taking another handful out of her pocket and throwing them on the ground - scattering them around as though they were real slugs being vomited out. Serena had no idea if this would work but her plan was to get him to try and become capable of fighting slugs. “Attack!” She called as snapped her fingers to get his attention and used various hand gestures to motion towards the “slugs” in the grass.
Whilst she was training him, she needed to also train herself. She knew that but she also had no idea how to prepare for this. With no idea what else to do, she dropped to the ground and unclenched her hands. Laying the palms of her hands flat onto the grass, she moved into position and attempted to do a few push ups. Okay. She was not strong enough for this - a thought that she quickly had when she struggled to do even two. These were not muscles that she had commonly used but she had seen her brother doing things like this all the time! Collapsing onto the ground, she lay in the grass - giving up already. She rolled onto her back, looking up towards the sky for a few moments before trying to do sit ups. They were easier. It was kind of hard not to simply kick out and use the momentum to move, instead of her actual abs. But she was managing to do a few more of these, without collapsing so quickly.
It was only ten situps but that was better than none. Serena fell back, panting softly as she took a short break. She grabbed another jelly slug, throwing it on the ground, "Now!" She called out, making the same motion. Lying on her stomach, she watched the brown rat with all of her attention focused on him. As soon as he made the motion to move, she whispered, "Accio!" towards the jelly sweet, quickly summoning it into her hand before swiftly throwing it in another direction.
Pizza Rat seemed stunned for a moment when he froze and didn't move for a little while but then quickly recomposed him, jumping for the sweet again. Serena continued this for a while. During her breaks, she would move the slug around and train Pizza before forcing herself to do some more sets of situps, pushups, squats or air kicks. This was what she repeated for... well, she had no idea how long it had been but she was exhausted and the next day, she would regret working out so far by the end.
It would pay in the long run though.

WRITING - 9. Write a poem about love
(under 200 words)
Status: Completed
WC: 131
Notes: I wrote this IC so it's sad, as that's her experience of romantic love (aka just rejection).
What is love?
There are no violins,
no sappy love songs running through my mind.
Is it normal to be afraid of these feelings?
What is love? Stories seem to lie.
All I feel is loneliness and isolation,
a cold empty feeling in my heart.
Is this love?
Is this rejection?
Is this a heartbreak?
Do I bother to find out?
I don't know what love is,
if it isn't the feeling of being eaten from the inside
or the desire to run away
or this bitter ache when I think about you
or this cold, empty darkness in my heart.
Maybe I'm scared,
Maybe I pushed them all away,
Maybe I'm unloveable.
Whatever it is...
Maybe it isn't worth it.
What is love, if not pain?
Maybe I'll never know...
