“Oh, wow. You got sent a letter by an owl?” Amaris said, surprised. Considering the number of owls she had seen whilst on the Hogwarts Express, perhaps using owls was normal for wizards. She couldn’t imagine what her parents’ reactions would’ve been if they received an owl instead. If they had, she probably would be back at home instead of in the halls of Hogwarts.

Amaris nodded before speaking. “Yeah, a vase I broke fixed itself. Honestly, I thought it was a joke being played on me or I was just seeing things.” She could still remember that moment in time quite clearly. It saved her from getting into trouble which she had been thankful for, but it had frightened her at the same time. It wasn’t like she could’ve told anyone either. Who would believe her? She supposed in that sense, being born in a family with knowledge of wizards and witches existing was much better.

She chuckled as Lucas talked about living as a muggle. It was humorous how clueless he seemed, referring to technology stuff. At least she had one thing she knew more about than the pure-blood students, even though it wasn’t related to magic. “Well, if you ever decide to go forward with that plan, I can help you.” she replied. It would be funny to see him fumbling around with something like a phone.

"Yeah, on my eleventh birthday." He nodded, before adding on. "We use Owls a lot, my dad sends me some stuff by owl every now and then to make sure I have snacks, or so that I know if something big happens with the family." He wasn't entirely sure how muggle borns would receive letters from there parents, perhaps there was some other system, but then again, he wouldn't be surprised if parents just had to adapt and send the letters by an owl.

"I'd of been killed if I ever broke a vase.." He shivered at the thought of it, but a lot of people had more.. Destructive instances of first magic than his, so in some ways he'd looked out. "Mine was sort of the opposite, I guess. I was playing with my dad when I was, uh.. Seven or something, I think and well, I missed. The ball was about to hit this painting of my grandad, but then it just stopped. I sort of guessed my dad had done something, but apparently, it was all me which was cool."

"Sounds good." He nodded, grinning back at her before turning to face the painting. He recited back the password. "Ta da.. And that's the common room." He said proudly, gesturing dramatically with his arm.

"Quite lucky the stairs didn't change.. Don't think I'd of been able to find my way back if they do. I really hate those things. All the houses I've been to don't have those stairs though thankfully."

“How does that even work?” Amaris asked. “The owls won’t know where to go and it’ll take quite long for them to fly to the recipient.” To her, something like e-mail would be much faster and more efficient. Did people cast some spells on the owls to make the system work? She would ask Lucas if it didn’t feel strange to bring something like that up. It would only highlight her cluelessness at how the magical world worked. Perhaps she would find something about the owls in her school books.

“Huh, seems like we were both saved from breaking something.” Amaris said. They were both at a similar age when it happened as well. She wondered how Lucas’ family had reacted when he stopped the ball in midair. Of course, they knew that it signified how Lucas was a wizard but were they happy or more relieved than anything else? She had heard about squibs, though she didn’t know if that happened often or not.

She smiled as the common room came into sight. “Thanks for helping me find it.” Amaris said.

“Yeah, the stairs are annoying. Who thought they were a good idea?” It seemed that the moving stairs weren’t too common for other people, which just made the ones in Hogwarts seem more bizarre.

"Well, they.. He paused, how did they even know where to go? That had really thrown him for a loop, as he looked down towards the floor, his face warped in concentration and confusion. xx"Good point actually, not a clue how they know. I assume you have to train them when they're young." He shrugged, before quickly adding. "But I do know about their speed, they aren't really slow. I've never felt it's taken too long to get anything." He shrugged, admittedly not really knowing of any system, but he couldn't see how it could be much faster than that..

"Probably a common thing, actually.. I was thinking a bit about mine, and if I had to guess, your magic comes out when your, uh.. In a high pressure situation." Certainly a dramatic way of talking about hitting a painting, but from Lucas' perspective, it was more than justified.. If anything, he was under selling how traumatic it had been for him. "It was good though, showed I wasn't a squib or anything.." He shuddered at the thought of being a squib.. He'd of been a stain on his family if he had been, but his magic hadn't happened particularly late, so it hadn't been much of a worry.

"No worries." He nodded at her thanks. "And, uh.. The stairs? I dunno, some one pretty stupid I imagine.. Probably some sick joke by one of the founders to mess withe the already confusing hall ways."

“Oh, huh, okay,” Amaris replied. It seemed that Lucas didn’t know how the owl’s found the correct recipient either though it seemed the owls weren’t as slow as she thought they were. Owls being messengers vaguely reminded her of carrier pigeons which she supposed in essence they were, but definitely more useful and efficient.

She nodded. “Yeah, that makes sense.” She had no idea what she was doing when the vase fixed itself and from what Lucas said, it seemed that he didn’t know either. Lucas’ inference of magic coming out in stressful situations where emotions ran high did make sense then. She could imagine how relieved Lucas had felt when he knew he wasn’t a squib. Not being able to do magic whilst your parents could would surely be a terrible feeling, even worse than not knowing about magic. You couldn't long for something you didn’t know exist. Was that why Muggles didn’t know about magic? There probably was a better reason than that but Amaris wasn’t sure what it was.

“Yeah. They did know that we are meant to be able to traverse the school right?” Amaris said, sighing. Sure, the moving stairs looked cool but they weren’t very practical.
