George laughed when Alec did - laughter was contagious, and these two gremlins were highly susceptible to this strain. He did narrow his eyes when Alec threatened to take the dating list into his own hands, however. The boy had never even heard of makeup - how much could he really know about making people look good? "Okay, but... you know, don't wingman me to anyone you wouldn't date yourself," he warned, pausing a moment as he appraised Alec. "Er, unless you like girls. Then only wingman me to people you wouldn't date yourself."
He nodded, sure that those instructions would be clear enough for even this thick-skulled Gryffindor to understand. When Alec said the words 'hopeless romantic', George's smile dropped like a lead weight, his whole face darkening in a scowl. "Hopeless?!" he said, looking about ready to cross his arms until he realized his nails were still quite wet. He was red in the face, feeling a bit angry even as Alec backpedaled his insult. It was stupid of him to talk like that. Nobody got their first kiss like they were in the movies. "I already told you it was stupid..."
Alec remained infuriatingly cute as he blushed at George's comment. George covered that natural blush with a more glittery, pink version. It was hard to tell where he had covered and where he hadn't until Alec was caked in a very healthy coat of glitter. He leaned back and giggled as he took in his handiwork.
"Yes... lip gloss goes on your lips," George said, with a nod and a proud smile. He was slow, but not hopeless. "Wow, okay. Just go to kiss for fun. You call me a hopeless romantic... what are you then, Hogwarts heart breaker?"
He was quite certain that Alec could get away with it, given how fast he'd forgiven that 'hopeless romantic' insult. Dolled up in his blush and lip gloss, Alec looked absurdly done-up. He was sparkling like a prism, the golden hue of the glitter glinting on his face. He was sort of like a disco ball. It also made him quite difficult to look at, George realized, humming softly as he wondered how to salvage his work.
"Let's just... take a little off..." he murmured, brushing away the excess with a clean brush from his kit. He felt like an archaeologist brushing dust away from a dinosaur fossil, only instead of fossils, it was the face of a bewildered wizard. A wizard that was only done from the cheeks down. His eyebrows and lashes were painfully bare and unlined, looking out of place on such a well-crafted face.
Alec would likely only get more surprised as George reached out and grabbed under his jaw like it was nothing, holding the boy's head still. "Stop moving," he said, softly but sternly. Then, from just out of Alec's field of vision, George lifted up a small brush with little hook-like applicators all around it. Before the Gryffindor could even ask what it was for, George was biting his tongue, concentrating on precision as the brush moved toward Alec's eye. Merlin's mascara, he was going to take his eye out! "I looked on the list and didn't see anyone I wanted... no offense. If I'd known you before I'd have signed up. Not like - you know, just - you know, for fun!"

Though George had agreed he mentioned having Alec wingman George to people, but only the ones Alec would date. See, there was a problem there, and it was one Alec didn't quite know how to explain to George. It wasn't the one George had first assumed either. Alec didn't date people, there is nobody he would date or would ever want to date. Wait- nope, there was one person. One. A breathtaking broomracer, Alec never thought he'd get into broomracing but it suited him. He was a good person, even if he didn't want to believe it, even if he called himself a monster. Smart, witty, funny, he played guitar well and singing voice was... A guy could dream, but Alec wouldn't. There was a reason Alec didn't get into relationships, and it wasn't just because the only person he'd ever liked that way would be his closest friend, someone he was far too attached to, someone he couldn't risk losing. Alec had the general concept for what George was going for so of course despite the fact it left George with no options Alec could be slightly lenient.
Alec mentioned George being a hopeless romantic, the dreamy type that romanticizes romance, it certainly wasn't Alec but it fit George. He was like the single main character out of book! Alec of course wouldn't treat this like reading a book. George was a real person. George wanted to clarify the hopeless part of hopeless romantic and Alec nodded affirmingly as he imagined George as the main character of a book dreaming up the most perfect boyfriends and romantic rendezvous in his head. Then George mentioned he had told Alec it was stupid. Alec's eyebrows furrowed as he looked at George. “What? Why is it stupid? A lot of people want that. It can be fun, well I don't know- but I assume so.” He tried to smile a little in order to cheer George up, assuming George was embarrassed about having mentioned it to begin with, even with what Alec thought to be his own positive reinforcement of the subject.
After George had put the powder on Alec's face he watched as George backed up a bit to get a better look at Alec. George giggled. Alec struck a pose, as if posing for a picture, he would playfully wink like many a magazine cover Alec had seen do( he always thought they were just normally staring into the camera like muggle photos, then they winked and it always surprised Alec!). “How do I look?” Alec could only have taken George's earlier giggles as a sign the perhaps the other have overdone it a little with the powder stuff.
The other seemed surprised and slightly annoyed or something like that of Alec's reasoning for going, Alec didn't understand why his reasoning for going mattered. George brought up the Hopeless Romantic thing again, and it took Alec a second to catch on and realize there had been a misunderstanding. Alec ignored the heartbreaker comment for now. “I think you're confused. I don't know what people have told you but being a hopeless romantic isn't a bad thing. Oh wait hopeless is in the name huh? That's why your confused.” Alec smiled, and shook his head, “um, think single protagonist who from time to time daydreams about like... You know running into 'the one' while on a nightly walk with their dog.” Yeah, it seemed like an accurate description, it's as close as he was going to get to what he wanted to describe. “Like I already said, maybe not though because your not the first person I've heard mention wanting a fairy tale first kiss moment sort of thing.” Problem solved, right? Alec hoped so, but just in case it wasn't-
The young teen shifted uncomfortably as he thought back to the heartbreaker comment. Eyes directing themselves elsewhere and away from George. “If you calling me a heartbreaker wasn't just because hurt about the whole hopeless romantic thing. Which I feel like your still hurt about.. do you- do you want me to apologize to you for that? Look if it's not about that you probably need to stop for a minute and think about what you say before you say it.” Alec was a little more than annoyed at being called a heartbreaker. He wasn't going around with the intention of breaking hearts, and he mostly went to spin the bottle because it was a social thing. Plus Alec was only human, he was a goody-two-shoes during the school year, he was allowed to indulge in going to such events for the aspect of drama. Alec wanted to pretend for a moment he was the type of person who kept up on gossip. Alec hated gossip but at the same time there was something so magnetizing about liking something something for a bit that he usually hated.
When that whole situation was over, Alec found a new brush reaching his face, a clean one. Apparently George had added too much powder. He was starting the feels the effects of the lip gloss as George finished up. Alec was moving around his lips trying to get it stop feeling weird, only to be stopped by George who grabbed Alec's jaw to hold him still. He blinked and stared for a minute, trying to glare and look mad as the shock wore off. How dare George hold his face still, Alec was in the middle of doing important things! Not only that but this weird pokey looking thing was being brought up to his eyes and he didn't trust it. Would George really go as far as to trick him to poke him in the eye? Well... Probably not. That was actually incredibly unrealistic. He let George do whatever he was doing.
George had a chance to do the makeup great. It wasn't Alec's fault if George decided to bring up the world's most shocking topic to his attention, and expect Alec not to react! Alec head jolted back out of George's grip which had been holding his face still, his shock reaction was to get away, put this situation on pause for a moment worry about the makeup later. He felt the small brush George had been using on his eyelashes hit his cheek, George grimaced, seemingly slightly horrified, Alec didn't know if it was because of the makeup or his reaction to what George had said. “Please don't try to put anymore makeup on me or-or fix mess I created because I pulled away. I need a few minutes.” He spoke before he turned his head away, letting out a breath of air as he closed his eyes.
Alec was silent for a few minutes, the only noise from him was the sound of his breathing, all until a half laugh escaped past his lips, and his eyes would flick open, he reached to run a hand through his curly hair, looking a fair bit concerned. “George, you said you had a short list,” Alec spoke the tone of his voice slightly whiny. He didn't want to be mean, it was just the fact George had picked the wrong person to inform this to. Alec didn't know how he could erase what he now knew from his mind, except he had too because he didn't know how to continue normal interactions now that he knew what he knew. “I'm not someone you should want to kiss. Or even ever be romantically interested in, merlin, you're not pulling my leg right?” To think Alec thought George had higher standards. It was quite possible he did of course, and would just be a fluke and good thing because it meant Alec wouldn't have had to say much on it.
“I'm glad you didn't know me. Now your just making me worried you have ended up hurt. I don't have my eye on anyone in spin the bottle because I've basically never had my eye of much of anyone.” Except... Exception or not, he didn't count since Alec never had an interest to change anything. “I don't date, I don't think I ever will, nor would I ever want anything close to it. It's not anything you would have wanted.” Alec spoke, he paused, he was pretty sure rejection from a person like Alec wasn't a huge blow to anybody's self-esteem. In case it was... “Why don't you tell me who is on your list? I could ask around to figure out who is single. Who knows? Maybe it would get you a boyfriend by the end up September.” He offered, smiling a bit until he remembered the makeup situation and frowned. “Sorry about about messing up the eyelash thingy, you took me by surprise.”

"It's just a little stupid," George said softly, as if that clarified everything. Alec's posing delighted George, who near collapsed into a fit of giggles when he saw that the boy was winking. Winking had turned into somewhat of a weakness for George, who couldn't help getting flustered when winks were turned in his direction. What had possessed all these boys to start winking, anyway? Perhaps around fourth year you just got the notion for winking. Who knew. "My god, you look stunning..."
The Hufflepuff lad seemed surprised that the hopeless romantic versus Hogwarts heart-breaker thing had turned into such a... thing. He had to admit, the hopeless romantic did seem like him, even if he resented being called hopeless in any of his pursuits. Really, the description seemed more apt for a hopeful romantic.
"I'm only joking," George assured Alec, furrowing his brow. Stop and think about what he should say? Things had gotten serious quickly, and George wasn't sure if he should be angry, offended, or confused. He was a little of all three.
Things had nearly settled when he started to curl the brush along Alec's eyelashes, letting out a sigh as he gazed deep into the other boy's eyes. "You have gorgeous eyelashes," he informed Alec. It wasn't a star-struck appraisal of his beauty or anything. He said it in the same way that your dentist might tell you that you have excellent molars. But when Alec pulled away, he was left with a ghastly streak down his cheek. The post-modern look didn't suit him in the slightest.
Alec shut his eyes and simply breathed quietly. George did not know what to do with himself. He had heard of holding your breath and counting to ten, but George had counted to ten at least thrice now, and Alec was still catatonic. He watched his nail polish dry and picked up his teacup, sipping some of the lukewarm tea before setting his cup down again. The tiny painted dish clinked as it tapped on some of the clock guts that were still strewn over the mess of the table.
"Ah!" George said, sitting upright with a start when Alec's eyes came open again. It was almost worse having him back. George squirmed uncomfortably as he listened to Alec, furrowing his brow again. Why on earth wouldn't Alec be someone he wanted to kiss? Granted, he wasn't George's usual type, and he had now outed himself as a bit of a weirdo, although George was never one to judge someone for having strange habits. "Okay, Alec, you've convinced me. I am thoroughly unattracted to you, not only because of the ghastly strip of mascara going down your face, but because... I don't know, you're not romantic enough for me. And you don't want to date. I'm not trying to insult you! Relax!"
With that said, George let out a huff through his nose, shaking his head lightly. And Jack supposed that he was the drama queen. Clearly he'd never met Alec. "Yeah, nobody ever sits still for the eyelash thing on their first try. You made it farther than I thought you would," he admitted. He could have warned Alec about it, but then he would have missed out on the beautiful Picasso-esque linework that his canvas was now wearing on his face.
The air still felt uncleared. In an attempt to shoo the elephant from the room, George continued speaking on, doing his best to assuage Alec's anxieties despite his own rising ones. "I just meant that if I had known you before I would have come to play, since I'd have a friend there. It'd be more fun with you. You are fun, Alec. And I would never want to date you in a million years." He gave a big, cheeky grin as he delivered those comforting words.
He grabbed his compact off the table and popped it open, aiming the mirror so Alec could get a glimpse of himself. "Just look at the state of you," he teased. "I didn't mean to upset you, I was only joking. But I guess you've suffered enough for a peek at my short list... do you know... Hugh Lowe? He's the half-giant. He's so handsome... And I thought of maybe Alan... but he's a lot older than us, and he's my friend, so I don't want to ruin that... if we break up we'll need to decide who gets our friends in divorce court."

Out of all the things George had said after Alec's little episode, there was one thing in particular that the Gryffindor would get stuck on. Entirely unrelated to the incidents that had just occurred. “Wait- It's called mascara?” SOrRy but mascara is a strange name, it could not go unaddressed. He stared at George for a moment followed by his eyebrows furrowing. “Does it really look ghastly?” Alec asked with a laugh. It wasn't one of Alec's biggest concerns, he mostly now just needed to figure out how hard it was to be cleaned. He didn't think aiming scourgify at his face was the best plan, he was going to need to think up some other options. George mentioned Alec sitting still longer then he thought Alec would be able too. “You were holding my face still the whole time.”
The young teen seemed more than uncertain about the events that had played out, and George did his best to reassure him. Alec was pretty certain he was never going to live past those million years, therefore he had no need to worry. There was something about George's reasoning that didn't make sense to Alec though. George had said that he didn't see anyone he wanted, he said that he would have signed up if he'd known Alec beforehand(he had but Alec knew what he meant, there was a difference), he said he wasn't going to sign up just for fun. Which was strange considering-
No, okay Alec now was unsure whether George had been trying to insist not for the sake of having fun, or if he was trying to stop Alec from making assumptions. The first one fit in line with the whole heartbreaker comment. The second one fit in line with what George was saying now. Which was a relief because otherwise Alec would have been stuck on that for a while, he'd always been terrible at reading people's tone. “Well... but wait- so you would have gone if you knew me before. . . to hang out?” George had said he wanted his first kiss to be special, not with anybody random. Which was silly thinking back on it if he said he didn't have the guts to sign up for spin the bottle, even without plans to kiss everybody. Had he been nervous about just going? Maybe that was normal, Alec didn't know, he wasn't exactly normal.
The amount of relief having flood him within that moment was massive. Alec moved without thinking, reaching to hug the other. It was almost as if he'd completely forgotten boundaries, completely forgotten that hours ago this was the stranger he dragged along with him for that scavenger hunt. “You have no idea how much of a relief that is,” Alec smiled and spoke, the second he'd finished speaking immediately coming to his senses and pulling away. “Er- I probably should have asked.” He said, watching as George reached for something and opened it, showing Alec the mirror within, the young teen now able to get a good look of himself. Alec snickered at his own appearance, specifically the black line across his cheek. His hand moved to wipe at the mascara on his cheek, only to end up smearing it. “I think I made it worse,” Alec whispered he cringed a small smile hiding underneath.
George would explain his short list to Alec. Alec would give the other a quizzical look, “...aren't they both Gryffindors?” Alec knew who Alan was, he'd probably heard of Hugh, he just didn't know where from. Half-giant and handsome is an interesting way to describe a person. Alec didn't know what to make of the description but at least he didn't have to think about it for Alan. “Do you think you couldn't be friends with Alan if you got together and broke up?” People could still be friends after breaking up, right? Alec had never seen a relationship that ended good, where people were friends in the end. It seemed possible though.“I thought you had to make a move,” the divination reading thing, and he wasn't sure that George planned on making moves. Like he was waiting for some sort of sign from Hugh or Alan.
That was when Alec remembered the mascara on his finger from accidentally smearing it around on his face. Alec smiled mischievously and moved closer to try and attempt to wipe a line of mascara on George's cheek to match the one Alec had. He would playfully stick his tongue out at George no matter the outcome and speak, “It's that latest trend, I thought you should try.” A smeared line of mascara on your face, yes that was totally going to hit off and massively increase sales of the product. Suddenly becoming serious Alec glanced down the look at the scattered bits of the alarm clock and George's makeup. It was incredibly messy only the type of mess two fourteen-year-old boys could make in one afternoon.“We should probably pick up.”

"Yes! It isn't really fun to go to twirl the flagon with a bunch of strangers just to like... kiss some and then go back to your tent. That's gross. It's not exactly my ideal method of making friends," George said, explaining the apparent contradiction in his reasoning. In fairness, he had partially said what he'd said to imply that kissing Alec wouldn't be so bad... but he'd changed his mind. If Alec had this much of a breakdown over a comment like that, he would much rather keep his lips to himself. The Gryffindor was sweet, but he just didn't make the cut. "If you were there I could laugh at you for having to kiss gross people."
Well, that was a little mean, but it was the truth. George froze as he was seized in a hug, but quickly wrapped his arms around Alec to return it, giving his back a comforting pat. "Oh, yes, such a relief that George doesn't like you. Wouldn't that just be a curse," he said dryly, before soothing the other boy with a few firmer pats on the back. "I am still joking, don't get upset."
George grimaced when he saw Alec smear the mascara across the side of his face. "Much better," he said, before leaning in to launch a second assault on the boy's appearance, marking a line on the other cheek and smearing it across with his hand. "There you go, perfect symmetry. You're so well-proportioned. This really brings out, um... something."
The glittering face of George Henry reddened as Alec pointed out that both members of his exclusive George Henry Short List were in Gryffindor. "It's hardly my fault they put all the good ones in one house!" he lamented. Maybe he just had a type. It lent some credence to the theory that the sorting hat truly did know one's true nature. After all, George's heart seemed to have sorted out the boys in the same way. "Trust me, if there were any good Hufflepuffs to pick, I would have them on my list, but it's just not possible. Quinn's got a girlfriend and I'm pretty sure most of the other boys are straight. Would be lucky if I were a girl, though. It's wall to wall lesbians in the common room, really."
George let out a long sigh. If he were a lesbian he could just ask out Willow and be done with it, but unfortunately, his life as a boy was infinitely more complex. It would require careful negotiation of inter-house dynamics for him to bag a boy he fancied. "Yeah. I just think it'd be awkward. I'd like to stay friends," he said with a sigh. Alec's reminder that the onus was on him to make a move prompted a groan and a glower from the hopeless romantic. "I know I have to make a move! But I just - I don't know when to make a move. Like, how do I make a move?"
It's not like he could march up to one and go 'hey, be my boyfriend!' Well, he probably could, in Alan's case, although he wasn't sure he wanted a boyfriend that could be pushed around so easily. Plus, if he said no, he'd have to transfer to Beauxbatons. George was brought out of his introspection by the sudden smearing of mascara across his cheek. "You knob," he barked, laughing as he brought up his own mascara smeared hand for revenge. He gave Alec a good, thick line across his forehead before glancing down at the clock guts. "...Yeah, maybe."
George set to collecting all his makeup, carefully avoiding getting mascara on his clothes or the outside of his bag. He picked up the plastic bag to offer to Alec to use for containing the clock, or at least its remains. "This has been absolutely lovely. My nails are immaculate."
