“You’re my companion now.”

At those four words, November's heart stopped. He could feel the tears burst loose from his eyes, though rather than grief, a gigantic grin cracked his face nearly in two. He had been seen by another of his kind, all of him, his darkest secret laid bare, and rather than be judged wanting, judged the way any other would when they clapped eyes on the whole of him, this other predator had recognized him as his own.

For the first time in eleven years, November Morsus had a family.

He was downright glowing as the other, knighted, him with his new title, transferring it with the touch of his finger, and he whispered it to himself, feeling the heft of it on his tongue, the flavour of the words. "Deathmote-kin..." With family came a family surname, and at last he began to understand why some of the students here seemed to place so much importance on the title. Your first name was your own, but your surname was a bridge, bonding like to like.

"I hope I can live up to the name," he said, his voice low and shy but his back straight, carrying a mantle of honor, an attempt to be worthy of his newfound kin. His dark eyes were glowing as he looked up to Kaegen, a spark that had long ago been smothered just beginning to reignite. "I mean, I've never met anyone like, like this before, and I-...." He shook his head, exhilarated, at last at a loss for words.

"I suppose I'm a little bit wondering what to do now," he admitted at last, his body a squirming conflict between exhilaration and shy deference. Dark eyes blinked up at Kaegen, overflowing with loyalty, with devotion.

And it's a strange breed, a different kind of creature looks for love through the eye of a needle

“I hope I can live up to the name”

It was the kind of question a creature would ask, a creature that had never been taught about names before, didn’t quite know the deeper meanings of it. The young ravenclaw didn’t worry about it in the slightest, it was something he had accepted along with the companionship of november. If there was something to be done, they would do it together. Kaegen was young, but his wings of protection had already spread out to encompass two students in hogwarts.

”You already have. A name is earned, then awarded. Not slowly lived up to.”

Kaegen felt a warm fuzzy feeling trickle down onto his confused half-human heart. It was a feeling he had missed, one that he hadn’t felt since he had first had some of his skin melted off by vortigern. He didn’t quite have a name for the feeling, and had tried time and time again to match it to feelings he knew. It was close to pride, pride of a successful hunt. But it wasn’t exactly right. There was no feeling of triumph there. It was close to joy, the joy of discovering something new. But the new had become familiar the moment Kaegen had named it.

So he decided to give it a new name. Dubbing his feeling the “sunfuzzies” he took a moment to enjoy them before answering November’s next question. It wasn’t a question, really. November was remarking that he had never met anyone like Kaegen before. Or at least the ravenclaw assumed that was what November was referring to.

”Of course not, there’s only one of me.”

November’s voice was quiet, not quite as quiet as Kaegen’s own whispery tone, but the boy born in fens and mist could appreciate talking to someone who didn’t feel the need to yell constantly. Quiet was safe, quiet was secure. Quiet was nature, either predator or prey. And November clearly fell into the former category.

“I suppose I’m a little bit wondering what to do now”

There was a simple answer to that question. It wasn’t exactly a smart answer, but Kaegen had noticed in the past that the sunfuzzies rarely lent themselves to helping him make smart decisions.

”We’ll walk away from where we’ve been. The only thing left should be places where we haven’t been. And that means somewhere new.”

And with that, he started walking out of the room, looking meaningfully behind him at november to make sure the other boy knew that they were going to head out together. Or at least he tried to look at the slytherin meaningfully. Realistically, Kaegen didn’t know what a meaningful look looked like.
