2022, Stage 2 Gryffindor vs Slytherin: Match 1

As much as the loathed admit it, Sarah wasn’t exactly surprised that neither her nor Santario’s opening spells had managed to hit their target. Their opponent was notorious for being quick on his toes and seemed to dodge her disarming charm with the ease one might side step an oncoming tortoise. It irritated the Slytherin to no end, the boy simply moving out of the way of her perfectly cast spell as if it was nothing. Her annoyance came out as an irritated huff and the sudden urge to stomp her foot, something which she’d later not be proud of as it was no doubt a result of the upbringing she constantly tried to outrun.

She supposed the one saving grace was that she too managed to avoid the spell cast at her, twirling to her right to dodge the black cloth that threatened to steal away one fo her senses. Her partner was less lucky, perhaps slightly distracted by the water which covered her. She wondered whether her pattern was even in the state to be here at all - concern for her captain overcoming the girl as she realised just how far she seemed to have fallen, even just from their last duel together. Though by the end of the round at least both snakes still had their sight. One was wet, and the other furiously trying to keep her emotions at bay, but they weren’t beaten yet. And Sarah thought, as she flicked back a long strand of green hair which had slipped free of her ponytail, that if they were to go down, they’d not go down without a fight. In fact, quite the opposite.

Tiger and Toad were capturing most of Willow's attention as the battle raged on below her. Santario was able to remove her blindfold just in time to dodge another shower Pressurized Water Charm from Alan. Both her and Sarah fell victim to Galton's Wind Jinx that split easily and hit them square in their chest, sending them back a bit and left them wobbly on their feet until they could fully recover next round. Sarah attempted to remove Galton's wand once more but fell short and missed again.

The snake had known what she was doing sending air streaming by the small teen; it was a move he respected. It was a move he quite liked to make as well. So he did! The wind shot forward out of his wand with gusto. He had missed the feeling of the wind at his fingers.

Successful in his cast he eyed Alan and nodded. Not time to get ahead of themselves, everything could change in a round or two as they'd learned last duel.

Santario reached up, ripping the cloth from her face letting it flutter to the ground uselessly. Alan sent another bout of water at her, but she managed to sidestep it with relative ease. One shower was more than enough, considering if San went back to the basements wet, she’d wind up getting much dirtier than she was when she came out of it.

Basements… That’s where the rats were. San's eyes trailed once more to the felines on the piste next to Willow. The slugs nested in her stomach churned with excitement with where her thoughts were flowing. They would be thankfully interrupted as Santario was encased in a whirlwind sent at her by the Candy King, pulling her thoughts back to the older opponents. Right. She was in a duel.

Being a changeling was exhausting, and the hag slugs in her belly constantly reminded her of what she was becoming, and the scar on her thigh constantly reminded her that she was a failure. She just wanted this to end, one way or another, no longer caring if she won anymore.

Santario took a deep breath, trying to center herself, as her wand raised.

Alan was fine, he would not need to worry, he would be fine. He had missed his spell, perhaps because he had been too distracted staring at his friend with concern. What was going on? "Since when do you call me Vanes anyway?" he demanded to know, it sounded wrong if anyone called him by a surname but especially coming from her he did not wish to accept such formalities. "What happened?" he also asked as he readied himself to proceed with the duel, hopefully not allowing any more distraction.

Another missed spell and Sarah was questioning her ability to actually aim at a target - one which barely moved yet still seemed to perfectly evade her charm. She’d been taught there was little room for self-doubt on the piste from her duelling captains, and further back from her father as well. Though doubt seemed to be creeping into her mind, invading like a thick fog.

Miss. Failure. Disappointment. The words intertwined with all thoughts of skill and strategy which she’d learned, sounding suspiciously like her father’s voice. The father who’d taught her that anything less than perfection wasn’t good enough. Galton’s whirl of wind was the thing to break her out of her head and bring her back to the piste she stood on, the burst so powerful she stumbled two steps backwards. Her slightly glazed eyes refocused on her opponents and she schooled her features. No matter how she felt, she’d never let anyone else catch on to her doubt. Focus, Lightwood.

The words she managed to focus on, coming from her opponents seemed oddly familiar, reminiscent of their last duel and the words spoken by the one now watching over this duel. Willow and Santario’s words had grown nasty, and perhaps this would lead to something similar. She hoped not. The Slytherin wondered if she’d ever get to partake in a duel which didn’t involve a crumbling friendship between her partner and opponent. Perhaps it would make the duel that much more excited should she be watching it, but the distraction was more a hindrance than anything else when she herself was on the piste. She supposed the silver lining was that it seemed to have knocked Vanes’ concentration in the same way it might hers. She glanced between the pair, shifted her perspective, and wondered how she could use this to her advantage once more. She twirled her wand between deft fingers and readied herself.

Fog quickly began to fill the arena this round. All except Galton. He was on an island of no fog, everyone around him seeming to disappear. Except Galton still had this super weird way of still seeing people in the fog. He was a weird kid. Willow liked him.

Santario tried to hit him with the dreaded Wind Jinx, but it was almost like he sensed it coming and was able to dodge out of the way (again, weird right?) Galton tried to do his double Wind Jinx, but his own wand ended up turning on him, backfiring and hitting him with the gust of air.

Air seemed to be the theme this round, Santario, Sarah, and Alan were trapped in fog, and Galton blasted himself into dizzy town.

Santario stared deadpan at Alan. “Well, this is the first time we have really spoken since our practice duel. So to you, today, apparently. People change as we grow up. I do not really care if I am becoming someone you do not like anymore, so save your whining for someone else.” She shrugged as she aimed her wand at Galton, another Ventus that would miss. Though The Candy King would seem to backfire on himself, which she was grateful for. Unfortunately, Alan mimicked Sarah and engulfed them both in fog as she had done him.

Now, as much as Galton took the words "Be the wind" to heart, he did not actually want to have the wind strike his own heart. Maybe Galton's wand had taken it too literal. Or maybe it thought it was funny. You could never know with wands, or more specifically, this wand.

The airblast had left Galton slightly fazed, and when he looked back up from the impromptu hair styling he though he might have blown some dust in his eyes. But no, it was not particulate stuck in his eyes, everyone else was really just enveloped in fog. It wasn't hard to discern where everyone was, they were far too noisy to be hidden, but Galton hadn't expected it from the snakes as well. Oh well, fog made magic look cool.

"You're lying," he accused San with narrowed eyes, the green within his irises had darkened to a murky green instead, showing his frustration and undeniably anger at the situation. He didn't get it, he did not want to get it. "You must have had a big change of heart for that to be true, it's impossible, you are not thinking like yourself!" He added to his accusation. Was this even Santario? He sighed as he glanced over at Galton, he was making a scene while his partner had just gotten hurt. "You alright, Galton?" he would ask the boy, and though the duel had only just began the Gryffindor's voice sounded tired.
