He felt as if his head was stuffed with cotton, awash with dull sensations and the inability to think straight. Even the pain above his eye seemed to fade into that darkened abyss formed by the dizziness that had overcome his conscious mind. It seemed that being hit in the head by a branch was prone to leading one down a darkened garden path. But even as his slowed brain struggled to keep up with the realities of the situation, adrenaline kept his thoughts active enough to process the makeshift race that lay before him. The whomping willow was close, and he had every intention of rushing past it and its outstretched branches.

It was only with vague awareness that he registered Serena’s presence so close to him, her taunt reaching him through the fog that filled his brain.

“Never!” He called back, a wry grin breaking his face into crooked halves, “You can feel free to though.”

He leant forward, and rushed toward the willow, fear gripping at the recesses of his dulled mind as it did so. But adrenaline surged, and he charged forth, even as the colossal tree reached out to strike at him. By some stroke of luck, or perhaps by means of some as of yet not discovered skill, he pushed the head of his broom down. With the movement, so too did he travel down, the swing of the branch narrowly avoiding removing his head from body.

Desperation pushed him ever forward, even as another branch came forth. Nicholas baulked, and whipped his broom to the right, the blow once more barely avoiding him. Twice lucky, he’d not make it thrice, for his speed managed to push him further forward, past the Willow.

As soon as he was within a safe distance of the tree, he raced toward the ground, barely avoiding crashing into the grass and dirt below. The desire for solid footing once more overwhelming. Panting, he reached over and held his knees, letting the exhaustion, both mental and physical, drain away ever so slowly.

“I win,” He panted, his grin even broader.
