Making the guy from the house of bravery had nothing to say was such an accomplishment. It was a very Aurora thing to do something oddly impulsive for reasons that will remain unknown forever. The mood swing and the explosive anger of the Ravenclaw sometimes were way above the normal extent. Was it a personality disorder or just a teenage hormone? Was she even a teenager yet? Probably would be a good idea to get it diagnosed by a professional so she will have it under control, both for her and the others sake. Nicholas’ reaction was amusing, especially with the slugs that casually came out from his mouth. It made her laugh, but almost choke on her own slug in the process. “Cat got your tongue, dear Ni-“ Yes, another slimy creature popped out from her mouth, “-Dear Icky Nicky?” She paused for a bit, looking excited as if she had the brightest revelation of her life. “Ooh that rhymed, I should be a poet.”

The slug farm idea was something that came to her on the spot. Maybe that would give her some profits, the slime was thick enough for a potion thickener, as a replacement of the flobberworm mucus. Another question to be added to the list of magical plot holes to ask the professor later on. “YES! A SLUG FARM! Just imagine a-“ The moody girl’s muddy hand made a gesture of a big sign in the air as another slug made her stop mid sentence, “-a farm of slugs, for potion ingredient, and I-“ And yet, another gooey sluggish puke, “-I will name it ‘Slugora’ or if you wanna join we can name it ‘Slugoras’” For a minute, the grumpy kid forgot that she was supposed to be angry at the seeker demolisher. As much as she refused to admit, he was quite decent as a person. A nice company to be with. Why would she think like that? A mystery, really. People should have known by now that the bird’s way of thinking was something else.“Okay fine! I don’t actually hate you” Busted. Aurora Tried to covered her mouth with one of her hands, only to put some mud on her face. A pretty close resemblance of a brown face mask. A fresh slug showed its beautiful face shortly after, “I mean I do! But I don’t, But I do! You are very mean!” Brown eyes looked at the Lion up and down to search for anything that could give her a reason to despise him more. “And I hate the fact that you are clean”

After all those regurgitations, the usual pinkish skin of hers turned pale as a paper. A sound from her stomach screamed for food, growled like a lion. But at the same time, the exhaustion from the last run, argument, and everything made her yawn. Once these are all over, it would be hard for Aurora to decide what to do next. If she could, she would, eat, take a shower, and sleep at the same time. “I’m so tired.” Then she would proceed to give the guy a big warm sweaty and muddy hug.
Aurora's Accuracy
10 + 10 = 20
Feel free to dodge or accept her 10/10 hug
If Nicholas accepts it or is simply too slow to evade, Aurora would embrace him ever so tightly, because she needs a nice hug and to make sure he got the mud everywhere, and before finally decides to pull away, a slug from her mouth would be placed on top of Nicholas’ head.

Nicholas fumed silently as the diminutive Ravenclaw continued to tease him, for that was all that it could be reasonably said to be. Another name flung his way, a punctuation upon the complete lack of sense that had spilled forth from her mouth, the slugs excluded of course. Those slugs that she wanted to use to create a farm, some kind of idea that was both inane and insane. He did not speak as she did, simply letting the sheer madness of her words continue to torrent like some sort of waterfall that had chosen to invest in childishness as opposed to an appropriate liquid. Instead, he merely clenched his jaw, the lines growing ever more taught across his already harsh jawline. It was only with relatively delayed realisation that he came to the conclusion that he had, in fact, finally finished vomiting up slugs. The last creature that had served as a finale to this prior question had also served as the finale to the hex.

His thoughts turned to slugs, and he all but drowned out the smaller girl as she continued to prattle on. She had spoken of some kind of name for a slug farm, and he had turned his thoughts to his final slug and the fact he had been jinxed, and the boiling rage he felt in that regard had become more of a pressing concern that the lunacy.

His attention snapped back when she said she didn’t actually hate him. His eyes suddenly changing from their clouded, dreamy expression to the sharpened orbs that they had been whilst he had all but yelled at the girl.

“What?” He asked to himself incredulously, his voice low.

That made no sense! None!

That confusion only increased when she approached him and hugged him. Had he been more in tune with the goings on of the moment, he probably would have attempted to dodge the embrace, but instead he found himself merely shocked by the suddenness of the embrace. What!? Confusion ran through his head at a million miles per hour, not a single thought made coherent sense in the veritable storm that was his consciousness. The girl had thoroughly unravelled his logical brain, turning it into a mess of anger and startlement. His arms hung loosely for a moment, as she hugged him tightly, and he did not even realise that she had covered him in the mud had so covered her.

Instead he stood stiff as a board for a moment, before a devious idea ripped through his head. She had lowered her guard, how and why, he did not know. But that meant that there was time to strike. He rose his own arms up and attempted to wrap her around with his arms, before she attempted to pull away, an even tighter hug than she had provided him. A smug smirk twinged at the sides of his lips, those same lips that had once expelled slug upon slug.

If he successfully wrapped her up, or if she failed to realise his intentions, he would raise her up, his surprising strength and her small size assisting him with the endeavour. Before he would all but throw her to the ground, the drop from the bear-hug surprisingly rough.

“Have you considered farming mud instead? You seem to keep falling into it,” He would taunt.

Unexpected, really. He was the best hugger Aurora had ever have in a while. Even better than the Gryffindor prefect that was in the same cabin as hers. But Nicholas was nowhere on the fluffy side, a tad disappointment appeared on the girl’s face. For the rating, probably eight out of ten, quite comfortable despite the hard pecs that should be as squishy as a pillow. With a hug as tight as Nicholas’, she could spend all day being there in his arm and surrounded by the slugs. No, scratch that. If you asked the girl directly, she would say something along the line of ‘I could not stand that awful person!’. As the eagle was about to close her eyes and sleep, the ground was not intact with her shoes anymore. Soaring, flying, then into the mud for the second time. “WH-WHOA HEY! WHAT ARE Y-“ What was supposed to be a nice morning jog turned to be a messy one. Guess you will never know what people hide up their sleeves.

There was just something about him. The way he talked, walked, and said her name. His grumpy yet kind and odd style. And the darkness on his irises. Don’t let her get started on that smirk. Oh yes, that sluggish smirk. The sun was hitting Nicholas’ face, with a headband on his head and those rather exquisite curls, highlighted his features, somehow made him looked kind of- dashing?. Stop it Aurora. She blinked once, twice, thrice. This was not how it was supposed to be. Maybe the lights were playing tricks or she desperately needed a good pair of glasses, never in her life she would have thought a guy without the blessing of pale blond hair could make her heart beats ten times faster. Much faster than her first meeting with the Ravenclaw prefect. A panic look was painted all over her face as her hand touched her chest. Stop! Stop beating! This will not last, the girl was sure of it.

A small crush here and there and come and goes, nothing could possibly be different from when she was face to face with that Swedish grunge boy. One second she was lost of words because of his not so great face and style, the next second that leather jacket guy was just like any other student she passed in the hallway with a sprinkle of dislike with real reasons. Then a tale of her parent’s love in their Hogwarts time lingered in her mind. Although Aurora did not get the full detail of what happened, the memory of her mother’s voice basically saying that their first date was in the hospital wing must be because of some playful banter. Is this a date? Is this how the magical people flirt with each other? Still very far from her knowledge and unrealistic expectation from those overly cringe teenage rom-com movies, however, real life is often wrongly depicted in the fiction world.

Nope! This is not happening! Him!? Come on! Still in the pile of muds, her pink hair was almost covered in it making it seemed to be back to her natural colour. Face overly flustered, a laugh probably was not a normal person would react, but she did let out a terribly awkward chuckle. It was hard to look straight into the boy’s eyes now that she came to a realisation that he was quite an attractive lad. “U-uh, wh-what did you say?” Should she follow Taylor Swift’s route and make songs about him? That exact thing will happen once she is back in her cabin without all of the dirt. As for now, she had to run. “B-B-BEHIND YOU!” Aurora frantically pointed out the unknown behind Nicholas. “THE GIANT SQUID IS DOING A TAP DANCE IN THE SKY!” Perhaps her brain had left her skull. Instead of getting up and running away, she grabbed a full hand of mud and threw it at the boy for no reason at all. Young love, complicated.

She flew with an unexpected degree of grace, especially given how obvious it was that she had not expected to be flung following the impromptu hug. Her shout all but confirmed that. One moment she was in his arms, entirely unexpecting whatever was to come, and the next she was sitting in a puddle of mud, a confused look on her face. She blinked once, twice, thrice. Just like that, Nicholas found that his smirk had only grown bigger. For once, he wasn’t the one who was at a loss for words. That thought filled him with an odd sense of pride, he had achieved what he was seeking to achieve, he had all but shut the girl up. No longer would she try to demean him by comparing him to death-defying adventures, and with any luck maybe being thrust into the mud like a slug would cause her to cease casting spells that related to such creepy-crawlies. Thoughts of his small little victory clouded his vision, and he did not catch sight of her holding her chest, nor her look of panic. Not that he would have noticed them, even if he wasn’t entirely caught up in his own head. Reading social cues and body language was far exceedingly far from his personal skillset.

The simple fact of the matter was that Nicholas McCowan was dreadful with people, dreadful with empathising and understanding them, even more dreadful at communicating. Whatever the diminutive quidditch player may have been thinking, he could not make the first guess as to its contents. Nor would he even think to make such a guess. His thoughts were far more singular, more straightforward, and simpler, he had thrust her into the mud and thus had finally chalked up a small little victory in their sudden battle.

A battle that she took it upon herself to cast the next blow in. Her call of the giant squid dancing in the sky was simply an impossibility, one that there was absolutely no feasible excuse for falling for, yet Nicholas did fall for it. Perhaps on instinct he turned his head, looking into the unknown. His prize for his stupidity was a fistful of mud colliding with the back of his skull, the dirt and water clumping his long hair uncomfortably to his scalp.

Shock then rage ran through his head. How dare she!? He could barely contain just how upset he was with the circumstances, the fiery emotions threatening to rip out of his chest and through his throat. Yet, they were quelled by another, incredulous feeling that he could not quite source, he was impressed. She may have been loud and annoying, and with a sense of hatred for him that he could not at all understand, but she had fight in her, and that filled him with a rather morbid degree of respect for the girl. She had picked the fight and she had every desire to see it through. Regardless of how much that impressed his subconscious, however, there were far more prevalent emotions in his conscious brain. Namely, his complete and utter revulsion at the fact that not only had he been hit with mud, but he had also been forced to vomit slugs.

He whipped his head back to the girl and said something quickly, in Scots, before swiftly translating upon catching himself, “What the hell!?”

He looked her up and down, his eyes flaring with frustration and anger. Before they softened slightly, he supposed he had thrown her into the mud. That sense of understanding was swiftly thrown away when he reminded himself that she had brought that onto herself by being positively rude. There would be time for introspection at a later date, for the time being he had been disrespected and his ego would not allow him to be disrespected further.

His eyes shot back over to where she had pointed, the mention of the squid had provided a delightfully devilish idea in his head. She was rather muddy, perhaps he would do her a favour by assisting her with taking a bath. Maybe said giant squid would make an adequate bathing partner for the frustrating young girl.

“Hold still,” He said simply, not bothering with any further words as he took an intimidating step forward.

After all, hoisting the girl up and to his shoulders would serve as words enough.

There she was again, swimming in a pool of mud, insulting someone that she had no real hatred for. Should she run away, but her brain said otherwise. Physically, the girl was present, but her mind jumped around each imaginary scenario where they were both living in a beautiful cottage somewhere with their ten cats playing all over the place. Time moved too fast, it was his rather angry voice that snapped her back to reality. “SORRY! SORRY! I- uh- I didn’t mean to do that!” His eyes were hypnotizing, as long as she doesn’t straight into those sparkling chocolate eyes, she should be fine. Sad to say, the world doesn’t work as simple as that. It seemed like Nicholas’ presence alone was more than enough to make her feel some type of way, of course, she didn't understand what the meaning of that. This was no doubt a hundred times more complicated than magic.

Jinxes and hexes were pretty much appreciated. But his next action knocked her socks off her feet. Maybe he just wanted to flex his strong arm, or he was obsessed with keeping Aurora close to him. The second possibility was the one that the girl secretly hoped for. “H-HEY! PUT ME DOWN YOU KIDNAPPER! YOU COULD JUST DRAG ME OR SOMETHING YOU KNOW THAT, RIGHT?” Which part of that boy’s brain that said his command will work? The moment he said ‘hold still’, Aurora just kept wiggling and screaming like a lunatic slug she was. “I SENTENCE YOU TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT WITH NO POSSIBILITY OF PAROLE!” Despite her ‘annoyed’ shouts, she couldn’t hide the smile on her lips. If only she had an ability to keep her emotion to herself. Though, the uncomfortable position that she was in gave Nicholas the disadvantage of not seeing the heated champagne rose shade that crept up on both of her cheeks. The word ‘put me down’ could be heard repeatedly, followed by some light punches here and there without the intention to hurt the Gryffindor nor that she wanted him to stop what he was doing.

Exhaustion from wiggling too much finally washed over her. Nothing would change the situation either way, so she pretended to pass out. No more punches, no more screams, nothing. But her eyes and ears tried to stay alert on the surrounding. The light reflected the calm water, Is it a lake? Will he throw me there as the squid’s breakfast? Though her IQ dropped to less than forty, a part of her brain was still able to function as normal. If she falls, he should fall with her as well. As the lake got closer, her hands gripped on Nicholas’ body tightly and forcefully jumped from his shoulder and to the water with a purpose to drag him along with her. “DO NOT TRY, DEMON!” With all of those muds, he might as well need a proper bath with the squid. "WATER FIGHT!"

Nicholas made a pointed show of ignoring the girl’s outbursts and frantic movements, but somehow, he managed to hold her in place. He had intended on throwing her over one of his shoulders much like a sack of potatoes, like he had seen described in so many novels. A squirming and screaming twelve-year-old was significantly more difficult to manoeuvre than any bag he had ever had to hoist, however, and his intention to look decidedly cool and masculine was quickly foiled. Instead, he ended up giving the girl a sort of piggyback, the kind of piggyback where said piggy was a hyperactive spider monkey and he had to constantly shift his weight and his grip in order to ensure she couldn’t slip away. Had she actively wanted to escape, she certainly could have, that was probably clear to any casual observer. But as far as Nicholas was concerned, he had successfully entrapped the annoying Ravenclaw. The continuous pummelling of his back only served to confirm his thoughts in that regard.

As he got closer and closer to the lake, he managed to somehow move the girl back to his shoulder, through much consorted effort and a series of curses under his breath as he realised just how difficult it was to actually carry another person. Still, as he stepped forward into the shallows, so that his shoes became water-logged and heavy, he afforded himself a cocky little grin. Yet another expression of smug self-satisfaction.

“Enjoy the swim,” He barely had a chance to utter the taunt before Ranvier all but launched herself from his shoulders.

He hadn’t even a chance to make a movement to throw her, he was off-balance, flat-footed and had relaxed his strength somewhat to respond to her reduced wiggling and thrashing. Only as she gripped his shirt and fell forward into the lake below did he become aware of the fact that she had played him, purposefully acting as if she were too tired to fight, biding her time to strike.

One moment he was making arrogant taunts and preparing to throw the girl into the water and stalk off, the next he was submerged, uncomfortably aware of the fact that he had fallen atop her. It seemed that her chaotic attempt to see them both submerged had seen more than just that, for the two second years became a mess of limbs and Nicholas struggled to realise exactly where he was, where the girl was, and whether he was touching the ground or her.

His head shot up, the mud and slugs washed away by the cool water of the great lake. He gasped for air, less out of necessity and more out of instinct. Vaguely, he was aware of the fact that his head band had been dislodged by the sudden and violent thrashing of his head and hair.

He sputtered slightly, before he turned to find Ranvier, “Jesus Christ.” The blasphemy left his lips without care or knowledge as to the words’ significance, “I-…”

Nicholas could not find the words to express his feelings as to the situation, once more shocked silence by just how chaotic the girl was. More than that, he was startled by how easily he had been wrapped up in the chaos, how he had allowed it to take over him. He had all but played into her game of chaos and one-upmanship. He’d thrown spells and thrown her physically, and to what provocation. What had come over him?

The sudden cold of the water seemed to shake a degree of sense into the lad as he sat limply in the shallows, trying to comprehend when exactly he had lost track of his senses.

“I still don’t understand you,” He said finally, his eyes looking the girl up and down, even more bewildered than he’d been when he’d first approached her, “I don’t understand you at all.”

He forced himself to his feet, slowly, “Not entirely sure if I care to understand you, to be frank, Ranvier.”

Deep water is terrifying. Fortunately for her, they did not fall too deep into the lake. But it seemed like Nicholas drowned in a lake of confusion. “I’m not that hard to understand, maybe you’re just dumb.” Aurora was a handful. Bless her parents who had to put up with her for years every single day. She was a rainbow in a dull world, but anything with an excessive amount will not be good for anyone. Frank, Who the hell is Frank? “Well, I don’t want you to be Frank, whoever that is. Just be a Nicholas.” Some of the mud had come off of her skin but not her hair and clothes. Not even then he wanted to learn one thing or two about her. If words in Hogwarts travelled fast, he would have known about the crazier things Aurora had done to other people, including to that person from Durmstrang. That could be the reason why Nicholas did not want to sign him up in Aurora’s life, but it was a little too late for that, was it? The cold water triggered her annoying allergy, making her sneeze multiple times. Unintentionally a little bit on his face, maybe not that much. “Fine! I don’t even want to make you understand!”

As usual, the guilt came rushing when everything was already tainted. Was this too filled with flaws?, was this beyond repair? All because of some petty drama that she made up in her head. Amusing at first, but it was short lived. To apologise or continue to fight, probably the hardest decision ever to be made after deciding what hair colour she should go for next. Chaotic as she always had been, Aurora was far from a heartless person. Most of the time, she felt more than she was supposed to. Maybe it was not too late to try to fix it somehow. The complicated relationship between those two was still young after all. Though, it might not work out if she tries it in her own way. Her gaze shifted between the boy’s face and arms, trying to notice something that needed to be treated. “B-but, uh- are you- are you okay? I mean, are you h-hurt?” It was a genuine small kind gesture. After all of that banter, she could not help but to feel a tad of worry that Nicholas might lose an arm or a leg because of her. “You probably should go and see the nurse if needed.”

How are people supposed to understand when Aurora could not even understand herself? She was pretty sure that her admiration towards the Ravenclaw Prefect was quite a pleasant experience. Although he did not reciprocate her feelings, obviously, the excitement and happiness never left her side whenever he was around. With Nicholas, however, there was a hint of fear. Not of him, but of what will happen in the future. Slowly got back to her feet, eyes glued to the water below her, she mumbled to herself. “I hate this, make it go away.” Now that it was written in her brain, this should be the last time she calls him out on whatever he said or did, if she could restrain herself. It did not make sense. She did not make any sense.

Nicholas seethed, were his emotions to take physical form, the water that now dripped off of him would have been boiling off of his skin. Instead he merely glared at the girl, his gaze entirely too intense for the situation. But his earlier confusion had once more been subsumed by rage, for a simple and entirely childish reason, she had called him dumb. Granted, she had posed it as a rhetorical question, but that was entirely irrelevant to the fact of the matter. That simple fact was that Aurora Ranvier had accused him of having a low intelligence. The same Aurora Ranvier that shouted gibberish and other such nonsense and all but flaunted her seeming insanity. That she dared to call him daft when she hadn’t understood a single common expression he had dropped left him utterly incredulous. Maybe that emotion would have overrun him like it had for the past few minutes of their encounter, but the insult had dug at him, regardless of how relatively inoffensive it was.

His rage only rose in temperature when she sneezed on him. Had she done that on purpose? He wouldn’t put it past her, slugs and mud had already been thrust at him, what was a fake sneeze to make an excuse to spit on him in the face of that?

“It’s pretty bloody obvious you don’t want to make me understand,” Nicholas growled back at her as he absently wiped his face with the back of his hand, “Otherwise you would act like a human being and not whatever the hell this is. Can you go five minutes without yelling at me!? What is it about me that makes you so angry!?”

That same question he had originated their conversation with once more was posed, and it seemed that the babble of emotions that had overtaken the boy during the running of said conversation’s course had finally settled. Anger. That was a far easier emotion to manage than confusion or pity. It was better to see the girl as an enemy to be overcome than another person with whom he may have to empathise. After all, wasn’t he supposed to be using this year to grow tougher? Wasn’t he supposed to be tapping into his anger to achieve proper results? He couldn’t throw it away at the first sign that some cute girl was upset. Especially if that cute girl was upset for no good reason and had taken out that anger on him.

So it was that he elected to ignore her questions as to his status, for to acknowledge that she may feel some guilt about what had befallen him would cause him to feel guilt about what he intended to do next. The silence that followed as she informed him he may need to see the air was left deliberately in the air. He further ignored her as she shot a downcast look at the water, and instead used the opportunity to seize his wand and cast.

Mucus ad Nauseam,” He shot the jinx at her, her earlier sneeze having inspired the use of the curse of the bogies.

He still felt somewhat sick in his stomach at having done so, especially considering how mercurial her moods had been. At some points she had almost been pleasant, it was just a shame that she immediately snapped back to being positively dreadful. He focused on those later instances, and of the conversation he had with Falentra Black toward the end of June. He had to ignore that weakness and make sure that he was taken seriously, that was the simple fact of the matter. Trying to understand her would be difficult. Making sure that at least one person knew he wasn’t to be messed with would have the more positive results. The question of what to do had been a simple one.

What was the reason for all these fights? The answer to that straightforward question had changed from a couple of minutes ago. Should she put the blame on the bludger he had thrown at her or tell him the truth. “I DON’T KNOW!” Another sneeze made her pause, but this time, she covered it with her long sleeve. No more unwanted saliva on Nicholas’ entire face. “No screaming, I don’t know.” Fairly, his rather annoyed tone was intimidating but intriguing at the same time. Something must be wrong inside her Ravenclaw brain that regulates her taste in boys. Eyes wandered around the water surface, searching for nothing in particular as she started to question why she did what she did. Part of her knew the answer, and the other denied it entirely.

Little did she know, Nicholas used the opportunity to attack. A harmless spell, yet could be fatal if left untreated. An evil Gryffindor, indeed. Those quidditch training during the summer holiday benefit Aurora tremendously, making her unhittable, at least to the boy.

She let out another sneeze before rolling her eyes. “You don’t have to do that, my allergy is kicking in as we speak. Blame the cold water.” If it was anybody else, the pink haired would not even waste a second to flipendo them into next decade. On the contrary, she stepped closer, checking his exposed skin for any wounds or scars. “Are you sure you’re not hurt?”

Curiosity killed the cat, or so they said. But it was now or never, she had promised herself not to cross paths with the boy anymore whether her suspicion was confirmed or not. One step closer to the truth, this should be the time where her bravery shows its face. Her heart was about to jump out of her chest. This was it, all or nothing. Whatever Nicholas' reaction was, at least she doesn’t have to think of whether her peculiar uncomfortable feelings are valid or just in her head. “Okay, listen up! I just need to make sure, and you probably will never hear from me again, and that will be good news for you, i think, i don’t know, but i really really have to make sure and i am so sorry for doing this, but I have to for my sake and sanity! Okay! Ready? One, Two”

A bad idea indeed. She jumped and placed her lips against his cheek. The logic of Aurora was, if she doesn’t think of it until tomorrow, then it was not real, if she does, then her life will be over. Drenched, muddy, and flustered, she awkwardly smiled and ran away as fast as she could. Probably dropping her inhaler behind. She should owl her mother to send her more.

I'd Do It Again PV Nicholas McCowan fin
What did she mean she didn’t know? Was she just trying to make his life miserable on a whim, an animalistic instinct? Why did she continuously slip from screaming to calm rationales? Was she just as confused as he was? But why would that even be the case? She was the one who had started the altercation and interaction by rolling her eyes at him and accusing him of having a part in some grand conspiracy aimed toward her. The fact that so many thoughts raced through his head, enough to make him feel near-dizzy, was aggravating in and of itself. He hated not knowing what was going on, he hated that he couldn’t rationalise the girl before him. Hence, his spell.

Yet, she dodged that with a degree of grace and elegance. He had expected another curse to be launched at him, but it seemed that she was entirely non-plussed by his attempt to get her to sneeze. Of course, she was already sneezing, and Nicholas blushed slightly at the fact that his own jinx would have done little more than increase upon an already existing condition. His rational thoughts, too, seemed to have faded once more. The cold of the water had apparently only had a temporary effect on his ability to think and process the information before him.

She stepped toward him, once more asking if he was hurt, and it was all he could do to dumbly answer, “S’fine.”

But it seemed that her step toward him had other motives than just to query after his non-existent injuries. For she spoke as to needing to make sure of something. As to what she needed to make sure of, he did not know, nor did he understand. Like so much of what she said to him, the words were naught more than jumbled gibberish, calling back to ideas in her own head that he could not begin to fathom. He managed to take a single step back when she began to count down, a count down he had not expected was ever on the cards. But it was what came next that shocked him, shocked him so much that he couldn’t avoid it.

She kissed him on the cheek.

He froze, unable to understand what had just happened, or why it had just happened. And then, she was gone, the splashing of the water the key sign that she had run away as fast as she could manage.

What?

Nicholas stood still for a solid few moments, his body rooted in place by the sudden shock of the kiss. What did that mean? He entertained the idea that perhaps she had a crush on him for a moment or two, before rapidly throwing the notion away. That was nonsensical. For one, if she had a crush then she would not have glared at him so often. Also, it was him, he was hardly the sort deserving of the affections of anyone. He had been an abject failure in almost every sense of the word. No, it was far more likely that it was another entirely crazy attempt to make him confused, to throw him off balance. And it had worked. Whatever her plan was, it was clear to Nicholas that Aurora Ranvier’s sole goal was to mess with him, to throw his head through a loop through seemingly crazy actions. Hexes, then sweetness, then violence, then sweetness again, it was impossible to read the pattern of the actions and that was her plan. She wanted him to try to connect the dots and to drive himself mad in the process, she was frustratingly confusing on purpose. It was all some sort of crazy game to her, a poor attempt to mess with the boy because he had the audacity to try to win a blood quidditch friendly.

She had kissed him as a part of that plan to mess with him. Who did that?

His face hardened from one of confusion to one of anger. He would not be made a fool of. Nicholas turned and trod from the water, muttering under his breath as he did so, he was well and truly fed up with dealing with the Ravenclaw, and he hoped to all hopes that he wouldn’t have to deal with her in the coming year. Sure, they were in the same year, but being in different houses would at least give him a bit of a buffer.

It was so much easier to hate her than it was to try to comprehend her.
