Jayden rolled her eyes.
Yeah. Right. Take away the crown and the gold and we'll see how many sign up their lives for this. Hmm. Probably more, if there was nothing to win or lose. Except pride and death. Shiny things and monetary gain usually brought out the competitive worst in people.
Time to be an overachiever. They had her at "bonus points" and she could desperately use a bonus after falling short on some of the trials she struggled with.
Boys were lucky they had pockets. There was only one place Jayden could – would – secure hers, on her thigh, without being separated from it. She didn't trust stowing it away elsewhere. Discreetly, she slipped her wand from underneath her skirt and set to work on the tasks before her, Lumos being the first on her list, uttering the incantation with accompanying wand movement. It would be quite the bitter shame for a Duellist like her to fail a basic first year spell.
The second task ramped up her excitement a little. Ooo, a surprise! Like opening one of those wizarding crackers! Whatever the pomegranate un-transfigured into, could she keep it? Like a consolation prize? Even if she failed, she wouldn't mind eating pomegranate right now. Anything to eat, right now. Realizing how starved she was; she hadn't eaten anything before the Trials – probably for the best (unbeknownst to her of the spiked drinks) as any food might've been upchucked with the amount of vigorous activity she had been doing – and now hunger might likely break her concentration as she performed Reparifarge with another incantation and wave of her wand, hoping for the best.
Potions was one of her lowest fortes. Jayden didn't have much patience for brewing [refer to said comments about her having the attention span of a goldfish (Orpheus) and textbook info not sticking in her head outside of the classroom (Hades)]. The Babbling Beverage, however, was actually one of the few potions Jayden had some tactile memory with, having brewed it a few times to get revenge on bullies and sabotage other Duellists. Cracking her knuckles, she got to work fetching her ingredients and cauldron, hoping her memory wouldn't fail her now.

Just before leaving the party entrance area, the one named the Underworld by the event organisers, Elisabeth had called to Drew (and his three friends) that she and Greg would be joining. However, these last two kids somehow managed to lose track on the other four, and so now all they had was each other as a sole company to try for the games, known as the Trials.
After a brief discussion, they decided that they would attempt the Trial of Hecate first, but simply because none of them could recall who Hecate was. Elisabeth forgot that about two years ago, she actually had read about this Goddess of the Dark of the Moon who was associated with deeds of darkness:

Fortunately for her, though, the host of the game did not describe Hecate as such an awful divinity; he simply stated that she was a goddess "people usually think of as closely related to witchcraft and necromancy". He then proceeded by explaining that participants were expected to demonstrate their skills in either transfiguration, charms, or potions; if they wished, they may performed more than one branch.
Elisabeth was determined to try all three, just to see if she was ready for challenges on first-year's spells. However, when the Hufflepuff reached into her dress pocket, she realised that there was no wand there! Did she drop it somewhere? Or had she forgot to bring it to the ball at all, leaving it in her dorm? Shamefully, the twelve-year-old requested the host if he could ask her a series of questions on the theoretical part instead.
(It was only after leaving this Trial game room that the girl realised she did have her wand with her all the time - inside her handbag.)

Pomegranates. Lots and lots of pomegranates. Okay. Cassie had never tried pomegranates before, but she'd heard they tasted horrible. Ew, maybe the Trial was to see how many you could eat before throwing up, or something equally pomegranate-y. There were definitely enough pomegranates for something like that.
Cassie's theory was not (surprise, surprise) proved correct after all. Instead - oh great - they had to prove themselves by doing magic. Or by brewing a potion. Oh, wonderful. First a pop quiz, and now an exam. Cassie had hoped for something a little less magic-based. Ah well. She could make up the points at the next trial if she utterly failed here, although she'd really rather not have to.
She might as well, the Beauxbatons girl decided, do all three 'branches of magic' in order to hopefully get more points. The first one shouldn't be too hard. The wand-lighting charm was a spell Cassie had learned pretty early on in her first year at Beauxbatons, after all. She pulled her wand out of one of the pockets in her oh-so-fantabulous jacket and held it a little stiffly. Even after nearly two years, her wand felt a little awkward in her hand - magic, for Cassie, was nothing like riding a broomstick. That, at least, felt like something she was born to do."If you don't work, I will... I don't know," she muttered to her wand. "Lumos."
Right. Whether that had worked or not, Cassie now turned her mind to the next aspect of the trial - the Babbling Beverage potion. She was fairly sure she could remember how to make it and gathered the (hopefully correct) ingredients from the table before brewing them in her cauldron.
And finally, another spell; and a hard one this time, not a simple one like the precious charm. Cassie wondered, for a moment, what all these 'pomegranites' were really, underneath the spell, and grabbed one. "Reparifage."

Drew rolled his eyes. "I know, right?" he asked. "I didn't know any of those questions at all. I was stumped," he said with a chuckle. "I don't think they meant to rig it or anything, though." The Wampus squared his shoulders and nodded at his friend. "Yes, we can still do this! This is not too far gone!" Charles complained about the magic and the questions. "Well, we haven't seen all the trials. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I bet they're all different in their own way. We still have opportunities to kick butt."
He listened close to the instructions, and pulled out his wand. First, he had to cast Lumos.
Lumos was easy. Easy peasy. He had done Lumos when he was still in his First Year, so he expected it to come as a breeze to him. "Lumos," he said, trying to be as clear as he could, and moving his wand in a loop-de-loop fashion.
He kept his eye on the pomegranate, and pointed his wand at it. Pomegranates were good, so there was no surprise in Drew's mind that someone would change something into a pomegranate. He made a semi-circle with his wand, and said, "Reparifarge." He was a little bit less confident about transfiguration than he was about charms, but he still felt like he could do well in this area.
The last one was about potions. Drew wasn't usually good about remembering things, but luckily, he had already learned about this last year. He racked his brains for the answer. He then provided it, telling to the best of his ability how to make a babbling beverage. It had been a babbling beverage that had been in the Butterbeer last year at the Fall Ball, Drew realized. That had not been his best moment.

And so, Dan Palmer found himself in the Trial of Hecate.
After three trials that tested him physically, and Orpheus that tested him mentally, he was in the home stretch. Just this and the Trial of Hades to go.
But, this was another he was not confident in. Hecate is the goddess of magic. Hermes children are thieves and pranksters. Major stealth. Not magicians. But, he had a rudimentary knowledge of demigod magic. So maybe he could get by...
He walked up to the proctor, and received his instruction. And realized that he had been worrying for nothing. The things required of him were within his knowledge.
"Lady Hecate! I, Dan Palmer, accept all three of your challenges!"
He took out his fancy stick, enchanted by Hecate to perform magic, and held it out.
"I now summon the Light of Apollo!"
Dan performed the proper wand motions to do so, and said clearly, "Lumos!"
Then, Alec asked him about Reparifarge. What were the motions, the word, ect.
Dan began to wonder if this was just Alec trying to get help with his homework...
"The ancient magic Reparifarge is used to undo a transfiguration spell that has gone wrong. The wand- ehh, the Enchanted Stick movement to use the spell is lazy, rounded check mark. You say it like 'Re-PAR-ih-farge'. Its etymology comes from the Latin 'Reparo', meaning to fix or repair, and 'farge', meaning shape. Damn Romans and their Latin."
Dan was REALLY getting into this.
And lastly, the Babbling Beverage. At this point, Dan was convinced. Alec had forgotten the material for 1st year work review, and couldnt be bothered to read up.
"The Babbling Beverage is a potion that is red in colour, and causes the user to speak in indecipherable nonsense. The ingredients are Valerian Sprigs, Aconite flower heads, and Dittany. Care must be taken, as Aconite is toxic."
Dan paused.
"Is that it? Have I completed the trial, Lord Alec?"

A small smile twitched on Dee's face when Alec Mason explained the details of this task. She assumed it was meant to be accessible, doable for first years as well, but... well, none of those were a challenge, were they? Not even one? If something was supposed to test her skills, she would like to be able to actually show what she was capable of.
But no matter, no matter, this should be a quick one. Lumos, Reparifarge, Babbling Beverage, all three of those had been among the very first things she'd learned at Hogwarts. Obviously, she would attempt all three of them.
Starting off, she picked up the pomegranate in front of her, turning it over in her hand once before setting it back down. Shifting the golden apple she still had with her to her left hand - honestly, the longer she was carrying this thing around, the more annoying it got - she drew her wand from the folds of her dress. She held it lightly, easy confidence in her stance, her wand aimed at the fruit on the table, and performed the slightly curved movement. "Reparifarge."
No matter if successful or not, she'd move on to the next spell right after, although with a trace more annoyance should she have failed the untransfiguration. Success wouldn't have changed anything - it was her standard, not an achievement.
A slight loop, the second spell. "Lumos."
The third task, finally, actually conjured a small smile on her face. No matter how easy the potion, brewing potions was something familiar, comfortable to her. She'd kept the best for last.

Whilst Scarlett wasn't a particularly academically-skilled girl, she wasn't a bimbo. This was first-year stuff - easy really. But Scarlett did appreciate the opportunity to earn points just by casting 'Lumos'.
She briefly wondered how Charles, Drew, Cassie and the other two who had joined them were doing. Scarlett could feel her Cassie-sense tingling - her best friend was almost certainly thinking about either their spectacular jackets or the sheer amount of pomegranates on the table. Scarlett started with the pomegranates, its skin a bewildering yet rather nice hue of pinkish-magenta-purple. Inside were all those cool red seeds/gem things you could eat. Scarlett had tried pomegranate in a salad once, and she could barely taste it, but it seemed alright.
"Reparifage!" said Scarlett, pointing her wand at one of the pomegranates. She then moved onto the Wand-Lighting Charm, regardless of success or failure. "Lumos!"
Rather quick work, wasn't it? Then she turned to the ingredients on the table. Oh dear. Potions had never been her strong point, and though it wasn't her worst subject, it wasn't her best either. Ah well, she would try and see how it went. Hopefully the cauldron wouldn't explode in her face.────── ☆ ───────

Gregorí had no idea how he and Elisabeth lost Drew and his three friends Charles, Scarlett, and Cassie. Perhaps they took a wrong turning somewhere. Either way, now it left Elisabeth and the Mexican himself in the Trial of Hecate.
It sounded easy, actually. In this challenge, students were asked to choose either to cast Reparifarge or Lumos, or to answer some questions on the Babbling Beverage. Gregorí was a good student and an intelligent person, so he performed all the three challenges with a "let's done with this" attitude. He did not feel super confident like most people did when they attempted something they considered themselves good at, and he certainly did not try to boast or to impress anyone. It was not a characteristic of Gregorí Erkens to feel an emotion deeply or to care about what others might think, so actually it was not a surprise that quite a lot of people considered him indifferent.
Either way, the Horned Serpent boy started this challenge with Reparifarge. The wand movement was actually simple enough, as if one was drawing (or sweeping in the movement of drawing) a tick mark or a smile. "Reh-par-i-farj," said Gregorí as he moved his wand this way, with an emphasis on the syllable "par".
Lumos was next. Much like Reparifarge, its wand movement was rather simple: drawing a loop in the air, or some may prefer to dub it "create a loop with the wand". Its incantation was easier than the untransfiguration spell, though, as demonstrated by the Ilvermony kid: "Loo-mos." (he put a stress on the first syllable)

Nichlas would enter even the next trial, the previous quiz had brought his mind to other topics and he was quite glad. Of course the worry was still nagging at him, but he would be able to worry about that as soon as he had finished those silly trials. He hoped for this one to be a little more challenging than the previous ones. Hopefully the boy would be able to score all of the points, he didn't want to embarrass himself in front of an inferior school. But he knew he wouldn't fail this, there was no way he could unless they somehow jinxed him. Niche was sure to do well. After that he would only have to check out the other trials and then he could be quickly back to the main area. He had to keep an eye on his sister after all. There were too many stories of disappearances in this school. He wouldn't forgive himself if Ella got hurt when he could have avoided it. So a little rushed he would participate in this trial as well.

Alan had somehow done the previous trial, even if he knew that he had messed most of it up. But why would it be something that had been potion related? Couldn't it have been all about creatures or something else that was fun? Even with spells he had gotten better at least with the theory, he still failed a lot of casting but he was practicing ever since he had become to co captain of the duelling club.
Alan heard that the next was about the different branches of magic, and when he heard about the transfiguration aspect of the trial, he got a little more hopeful that this one will be a little more successful. Well to be fair he was still in the opinion he had done well the previous trial, all things considered and he was having fun, so excitedly he would get ready for this trial as well. Then he was wondering if Tiger was enjoying himself as well, hoping that he got a lot of attention and pats. He would have to pick him up later on from the underworld area, but other than that the cat should be fine.
