No.

Really? Really?

That was it. This was horrible. What had she been doing, getting her hopes up? This duel would go horribly. It would go as horribly as her first. Horrible, absolutely horrible. Her spell hadn't even touched the subject of her attack. How had her own attack been so easily avoided?

Of course, she was glad she had avoided the attack that had been directed against her, but that did not matter. What mattered was that her own attack had failed, and that this was going to be the worst, and that she was going to lose, because that was what she was; a loser. She was a loser, who lost, and did loser-y things, like not winning duels.

However, if she wanted even a sliver of another chance at this, she had to concentrate. After all, the opposition had not succeeded either of their spells either, which meant there was still some hope, right?

Taking a deep breath to not further her state of panic, she steadied herself and reminded herself what she was here to do; win.

Maria’s lips formed into a tight line, realizing that their spells had not gone as they expected them to. Luckily for her Calanthe’s spell fizzed out before she’d had the chance to cast it. Katrina had missed Autumn. Good. It was good that they hadn’t landed a hit, but neither had they. No matter, it was only the first round. There was still a long way to go.

Determined more than ever she held up her wand again, ready to take on the next round. "We can do this." She'd say to her partner.

Tryna solve a problem like Maria.

The duel was thus far proving to be a remarkable stalemate. As with the first series of spells, the second set involved three misses amd one unsuccessful cast. Katrina aimed a Knockback Jinx at Maria, whereas Calanthe sent a Curse of the Bogies towards the same target, though the witch dodged them both. She then tried to retaliate with the bogie-based curse towards Katrina, yet the green bolt of magic was dodged, left to be absorbed by the room's enchanted walls. It seemed that dread would impair Autumn this time. The Hufflepuff's intent was weakened by thoughts of despair, and distracted by her former loss, she would consequently fail to cast the curse altogether. Pericles watched on with mounting apprehension. The witches were all obviously capable casters and evaders, though the lack of confidence some suffered was vicariously painful to witness. "Come on then," he urged at a murmur, too quiet for any onlooker (let alone duelist) to hear, supporting no one in particular. Tension was rising with the hum of unsatisfied magic in the air.

Maria didn’t quite understand if she was lucky or just rather unfortunate. Both their opponents had targeted her this round, and while she was relieved that she wouldn’t have to worry about Autumn, she was also bending over backwards to avoid the spells they threw at her. She and her partner tried to counter as best they could, but alas, her spell missed and Autumn’s hadn’t manifested.

The Huffle let out a puff of air, blowing the misplaced hairs on her face and rolled her shoulders back. The atmosphere was thick with tension, people waiting for a spell to hit – for something to happen. The brunette’s eyes were deep in concentration, trying to think of their next move. Hopefully their next moves would be effective ones. One thing was obvious to her though, if the duel continued this way then the would be here a while.

Hahahahahahah this was a nightmare.

Well, the other team was not exactly doing much damage either, but wow, this was an absolute disaster. Twice. Twice she had failed miserably. Again, it could be added that she had not been the only one to fail miserably, but, once again, that was not the point.

Last time had been better; at least then she had been able to cast the spell then. This time? How off had her concentration been to not even be able to cast?

It was disappointing, and she was angry at herself, but she had priorities. She would win first, and wallow later.

What a waste of time. Katrina couldn’t believe the chances for everyone’s spells missing, or failing. It was like there was something just keeping them from succeeding.

Katrina groaned inwardly but kept her expression mostly unreadable. She spun her wand in her fingers before leaning back into her next spell. Certainly she couldn’t miss again?

With a heavy sigh, Calanthe grew more exasperated than anxious. This was turning out to be exactly like their first duel, sans the head cold. This team's luck was absolutely moot. After she side-stepped one of the green rays again, the young witch tried shaking off the nerves. Maybe her own uncertainty was wafting towards Katrina, clouding both their minds in doubt. What if they were all feeling it, including the badgers? Whatever, let's just get this over with.

The stalemate was thrilling in its own way, but it was about to be broken by a bizarre display of prowess. Maria Dee's deep concentration paid off. The Hufflepuffs had quite enough of all this, and when both Gryffindor duellists took aim, she was ready. In a jaw-dropping series of swift dodges, she darted out of the way from Katrina's Flipendo and Calanthe's Mucus ad Nauseam. She and her partner returned the same spells, Maria's curse and Autumn's knockback jinx both aimed at Calanthe. The second-year felt both spells slap against her. One was a brute force. The other was ominous, its effects creeping, starting with the slightest pressure at the front of her skull. It wasn't painful per say, though her sinuses would soon start to flood with foul mucus. This dangerous game had finally kicked off, with Hufflepuff servin a hardball into Gryffindor's court.

Wait.

Both of their attacks had worked?

Both of their attacks had worked.

Both of their attacks had worked!

Great! That was great, and Autumn found herself exhaling with relief, only to remember that the fight was not yet over, and that this may have been good news, but she would only allow herself to celebrate after certain victory. A few spells working out was not a certain victory.

Yet, as she calculated and raised her wand, she found herself smiling anyway.
