2020, Stage 1 Group B: Gryffindor vs. Ravenclaw

Mars felt the magic spark in their fingertips as they shouted "Mucus ad Nasuem!" watching as the verdant light grew. It shot out in a brilliant beam, hitting their target dead on.

"Hell yes!" Mars couldn't deny the fact they were a little bit drunk on the power, adrenaline thrumming through their veins. Their grin only grew as they heard a thump from the other side, looking up to see Katrina keeled over on the piste. Ah, so the Fourth Year actually had the skills to back it up.

The wix's palate soured slightly as they noticed both the spells had been aimed at their partner. How boring.

"You really aimed for her?" they questioned the other team, raising an eyebrow, "Of the two of us—I'm not gonna say it was the wrong decision but..." Mars left the implication hanging in the air, a grin spread over their face. They were well aware of their weaknesses and next to Cel... well, they'd stay happy she was on their side.

Turning to their partner, they noticed a shift in her stance. They watched as she rounded to their other side, returning her high-five as she raised it. The words that were whispered into their ear didn't go unnoticed either.

Alright, sounds good. Mars grinned as they raised their wand, ready for the next round of spells to fire.

Their plan was practically perfect on paper. Calanthe had not a single positive feeling since the school year started. Days were either alright or terrible, never solid. But from the moment she heard this plan, she felt solid. It was almost as if Pelor was mocking them for not accounting for the two Gryffindors missing both their shots.

Almost blinded by the brilliant green light of the second-year raven, Calanthe was thrown into a memory of staying out in the rain too long. She looked across to Katrina, already feeling the trickle of watery snot down her nasal cavity. The older Gryffindor stood frozen, unmoving. Of course. She heard the cry of Petrificus Totalus from across the piste and cursed herself for not perfecting the third-year spell sooner.

Irritation crept up her skin and the witch could not tell if it was caused by the bogies or the Ravenclaw’s tiresome commentary. Calanthe promised herself that she was going to be better this year. No hiding, nothing ill-mannered. Yet, the wix’s taunting was superbly annoying. Unable to come up with a witty response, Calanthe let loose a wary sigh, stoppered by a sneeze. Feeling even more uncomfortable with her wand, she raised it towards the ravens, hoping her solo round would yield better results.

Watching how expertly Miss Choi's spell was dodged, he had to respect their foresight. Taunting an opponent and then concentrating on evading was a good move, freeing up their ally to cast freely – only it seemed the luck was not with Miss Gray this time around, as her spell went wide. No, it seemed the luck had shifted to Miss Walker who – in a show of quiet strength – managed to break through the curse paralysing her.

Idly Zahid also took note of the fact that once again, fire spells seemed to be in favour.

Katrina really hated being paralyzed. She hated it so much that she managed to break free. Willpower is strength in its finest form after all. Katrina silently stood up, hoping that being quiet would keep her from being targeted again.

She had just the spell in mind. Katrina rose her wand with defiance. Time to win this.

Watch out, had been the simple words that she'd whispered. Watch out for Calanthe. And thankfully they'd paid off, as taciturn as the comment had been—Mars had understood even as Cel whirled away to whip out another spell, and satisfaction settled down as she watched them dodge away from the Knockback Jinx fired at them.

Unfortunately, making sure her partner hadn't been hit cost her. In those last few seconds between raising her wand and casting, her eyes flicked astray for just a second towards the light of Calanthe's spell, and her Indendio Duo went wide, nowhere near touching her opponent. Damn.

And what was more, her other opponent had begun to move. The time she'd bought for them only lasted so long, it seemed. Oh, well, the duel was meant to be two-on-two, anyways. "You good?" she checked with Mars, but didn't dare let her gaze move from Katrina and Calanthe again. Cel stepped back, breathing in and steadying herself in her place.

Maybe it was kind of weird that Mars grinned at the spell blasting their way. But then, maybe it wasn't. They flipped the wand they'd raised back against their forearm, ducking under the Gryffindor's spell. The tip was cool, no promise of magic singing from the whittled wood.

Mars held in a snicker. They should probably pull back on the taunting slightly. But then, how much did they really care? They'd have to eat them soon enough, might as well enjoy it while it lasted.

"There we go," they laughed, "Now you're thinking like a duellist!"

Some part of their satisfaction was quelled though, watching as Cel's spell went wide. Ah, shame. You win some, you lose some. Another second and they realized that Katrina had broken free of the Full-Body Bind. They offered her a grin, waving slightly.

"Welcome back Katrina, glad you could join us," they quipped, smile wide. Their eyes traveled back to Celynne, giving her a nod at the question. Mars flipped their wand point back to the ready and turned, giving both their opponents a once over. Time to do something.

With congestion clouding her mind and snot dribbling down her chin, Calanthe felt herself slowly being consumed by her opponent’s spell. Yet, the girl was durable and felt like she had enough within her to take down the ravens. As if to up her drive even further, Katrina rose from the ground, breaking free from the paralysis. After watching her knockback jinx go wide and dodging an arc of green flames, seeing her partner push forward made Calanthe’s grip on her wand just a little tighter. We can do this. A damn head cold isn’t going to stop me.

It seemed like her opponent could not shut up. Is this how all the duels are going to be? The normally reserved witch found it hard to follow along with the raven’s chatter and even harder to formulate a response with the perpetual feeling of a sneeze building in her sinuses. Choosing to ignore the wix’s patronizing comment, Calanthe stole a glace at Katrina. The girl’s gaze shone with defiance and Calanthe raised her wand to mimic her stance.

Another round of spells left the duellists' wands but only one of the four connected with their target. Miss Gray's aim proved to be true while all other spells went wide. Maybe they were nervous? Or maybe their opponents had simply more practice in dodging? Whatever the case, while they might have to work a bit on their aim, Zahid did note that – unlike the other duels he'd watched over – they did all succeed in their casting so far.

This time, Miss Choi was the unlucky one to freeze up and fall over, paralysed.

Perhaps they should have expected it, both of their opponents spells flying at them this time round. They had made a big fuss about being the better target after all. Ducking under Katrina's cast, they barely scraped by the one that shot by their nose. Thank god for that Mucus ad Nauseam.

Mars gritted their teeth at another miss, sighing. All they wanted was a hit, was that too much to ask? But it seemed that Cel was doing much better. At this point, they stopped feeling remorse for grinning at the way the black-haired Gryffindor froze, paralyzed by her spell. All's fair in love and war, right?

It was funny how the tables had turned. Just a few rounds ago, it'd been Katrina in the bind and her teammate still on the field. They wondered how the lioness was going to handle it.

"Hate to be you right about now," they winked, words rolling off their tongue. It was probably getting annoying but- that was the point, no?
