Cassie Heather gaped at the mention of a Quidditch match where all 700 fouls were committed. "Woah!" she exclaimed. "That must've been a pretty long match! Poor ref. And players. And, actually, poor - what-they're-called - spectators - too. Can you remember the teams?"

Cassie grinned at Scarlett's response upon learning about S.C.A.R, and rearranged her expression into one of false terror, widening her eyes and opening her mouth slightly. She always had been a good actress. "Oh no, mademoiselle miss!" she cried out. "Don't kill me! I swear, I'll tell you everything you want to know!"

Then Scarlett told her that she already had a plan for if Cassie ever started writing poetry, and the Beauxbatons girl wrinkled her nose. "Ew. If I ever start writing poetry, the result will probably kill me anyway. I'd be terrible at writing poetry. Here, how's this, Lettie?" And she began to sing to the tune of Oh Steering Wheel (as Cassie called it, seeing as it didn't really have a name) from Wreck It Ralph 2. "Oh broomstick, oh broomstick, I like flying a broomstick!"

Cassie stuck her tongue out at the mention of Lettie. "Lettuce. Lady. Scary Scarry. Pick your favourite."

"I didn't actually use a spell," Cassie admitted when Scarlett questioned her about her failed wintertime prank. "I got a bucket of really hot water and poured it over the top. Nothing happened." She glanced at Scarlett, and then confessed, "I'm not that great with spells, really. I can do defensive stuff okay, for some reason, but..." Cassie trailed off. "I get the theory. It's just the practical bit, I guess."

Wait, Scarlett didn't even know anything about her family? Cassie guessed that the mention of your missing father and reclusive mother wasn't really the best topic for dinnertime conversation with your aunt, but had she never even asked?! "Oh. I'm definitely muggle-born, though. Could you imagine my parents as a witch and wizard?" Cassie snorted at the thought.

When they reached the owlery, Scarlett asked a rather stupid question, in Cassie Heather's opinion. "Uh, Scar, I didn't even know that Howlers existed until a few minutes ago," Cassie reminded her friend.

Scarlett grinned at Cassie's shock. She wasn't one to revel in people's surprise at the knowledge she had given them, but the slightly competitive side of her took pride in knowing something that her friend didn't. "Yeah, can you believe it?" said Scarlett eagerly. Quidditch was something she could prattle on about for months. "I mean, sometimes people at Hogwarts foul with blatches in our games, but we haven't done that many! And I don't think I can remember-" She tapped her temple. "Memory of a goldfish. By the way, what sport do you play? Do you play any?"

She laughed at Cassie's next proclamation of her potential secret terrorist identity, holding her fingers in the shape of a gun. "You'd better," she growled in a - frankly terrible - gravelly voice. "Or you'll be facing the not-so-nice face of my rifle." She grinned again. "Joking, joking!" reassured Scarlett, putting her hands up in the typical 'innocent position', her vocal chords saved from the weird impression she had been attempting.

And then Cassie started singing something about a broomstick. Scarlett blinked and them chortled. "You should sing that at a talent show," she said. "The judges will love you and your weird references to broomsticks."

"Scary Scarry is quite nice," she admitted as an afterthought. "Very original y'know? Scary Scarry. I like it."

"Well that's super creative, you should get a medal for that or something," said Scarlett, probably reaching the height of how attentive she could be with another living organism. "No one sees the genius of pranks nowadays, do they?" She sighed. "And don't worry, I'm not the best at spells myself either."

"Mr and Mrs McGregor-Martin, magical?" Scarlett pictured the happy couple with wands in their hands and - no. She had known the McGregor-Martins almost her whole life and they had seemed very much the ordinary suburban family. Scarlett envied them ever so slightly, but she would rather die than tell someone that. "Mm, I can't imagine it."

"Right, yeah," said Scarlett afterwards. She snapped her fingers like she always did when in thought. "Maybe just an average letter then? A bit boring though - any ideas to spice it up a little?"

It seemed that Scarlett shared Cassie's passion for magical sports, which made the older girl smile. Only then she mentioned a word which Cassie didn't know. "Blatches?" she repeated, a little confused. "It's probably a different word in French." At the start of her first year, Cassie had made a point of asking for any new magical words she learned in English as well as French, until she realised that teachers were getting annoyed at her because of it. One had pulled her aside and told her essentially to look it up herself, and were they really supposed to repeat every word in English, Spanish, all the other languages spoken by Beauxbatons students? Cassie had gone away looking for a magical French-English dictionary but had come back empty handed. She now relied on Berry, who had grown up not only magical but also speaking both French and English, instead, or at least she did when she remembered to ask him.

Cassie grinned when her friend asked if she played a sport. "Yeah!" she said proudly. "Official member of the Beauxbatons broom racing team, right here." She soured. "Or, at least, I usually am. They needed a smaller team for this race 'cos you lot don't have a proper one, so I'm not in it." Cassie made up her mind to cheer up. "Anyway, I play quidditch sometimes just for fun, but you know me, I'm not great with the whole obeying-a-captain thing. Broom racing's, like, my dream sport, I tell you."

"Oh goodness," Cassie snorted when Scarlett joked that she should sing in a talent show. "They'd probably all run away screaming."

Cassie smirked at the newly-nicknamed lioness. "Scary Scarry it is then."

"Oh, I agree." Cassie sighed along with Scar. It was true, in Cassie's eyes. Pranks were starting to be seen as childish and silly, and Cassie... Cassie didn't care about that, but it was annoying. Which meant that she did care? No. She didn't care. Cassie Heather McGregor-Martin was without a care. "Oh yeah! I've heard of this shop in - uh - whatsitcalled - Digon's Alley? Something like that? - that sells loads of prank stuff. Do you know if they do overseas postal - I mean owl - orders?"

Cassie nodded. She agreed - the idea of her parents being magical was a little more than she could handle. "Apparently, we took it pretty well, considering. Well, I did. It made sense, y'know? Papa, on the other hand... Papa fainted. And Mum thought the teacher guy'd knocked him out and tried to call the police on him. Eventually I managed to convince them when a load of water appeared out of nowhere and fell onto Papa's head. I didn't mean to. But it made them calm down, at least."

"Hm." Cassie squinted into the distance, thinking. "Oh! I might just have..." Cassie dug about in her coat pockets for a few moments, searching. She was sure she had a tiny bit left! The stuff was pretty expensive for a pranking supply, so she didn't have much of it, but there should be... "Found it!" A wicked grin spreading across her face, Cassie pulled out a small packet, about the size of a takeaway ketchup packet. "Instant darkness powder." Cassie opened the packet and peered inside. Shoot. There was only a pinch of the stuff left. "It's not actually instant darkness. It just dims the light a lot. I wanted the version from Peru - that one's better - but I couldn't find it anywhere."
