Ancient Runes - Study Session RP
What do I do now? Do I just sit down? Is there an assigned seat for everyone? In the short time that Archer was standing clueless at the back of the class, three more kids had confidently walked in, and each had taken a seat, acting as if entering a star-lit beach on the 6TH FLOOR was an everyday occasion. Well, two of them were at least; another freaked out AFTER she had sat down. What a strange start to a study session... The Hufflepuff thought, as he finally moved towards a desk.
He chose to sit down beside the pink-haired girl, feeling a certain kinship as she had been the only other kid that seemed to be unsettled by the unnatural situation as welll. Archer wondered nervously if he should introduce himself. He has never seen the girl before in the Hufflepuff common room so she may be from a different house. Before he could bring up the courage however, the professor started to speak, introduced himself. Then, with sudden snap of a finger, the scenery around the class broke.
"Wha!?" Archer could not stifle his surprise as he jumped a little bit at his desk. Looking around and up now reveals classroom walls and a normal roof with strange symbols on them. "Aaah... Of course..." Archer said to himself, "It was MAGIC!" he continued, stating what should be obvious. Realizing that he had said the last part out loud, he felt his cheeks reddened as he bent his head down, pretending to write something in his notebook. Inwardly, he was feeling relieved. He did not die from exhaustion at the staircase, and was not in some sort of strange Wizard purgatory. Of course it was magic... I should have guessed! Hoping the others did not notice his outburst, Archer desperately tried to focus on the professor.
Hmm... So I guess it's not just about learning how old farts used to write... I should've known that runes are also magical...Archer was pleasantly surprised as he scanned the symbols, the runes, scrawled on the blackboard. "Feh? Fuh? Fueoh?" the young Hufflepuff pursed his lips in a vain attempt to try to pronounce the first rune. "Yer, Yuuur... Yeeuur" He tried his luck on the second one. Yep. Archer had decided: Ancient people talked funny.
Then he realized something. Archer squinted his eyes and scanned the blackboard very intently before saying out loud, "Huh, none of the runes say 'Feather Light'"

Magnus rushed over to check Aurora's runes, then sighs "Next time please wait before combining runes, if you mess up on a combination, it may result in a..extremely bad side effect." He told everyone "For example, the rune may explode or drain your magic." he informed in addition then proceeds to check Aurora's runes and nods "Not bad, but why a fire and ice rune, if I may ask?" He questions Aurora seeing if she does indeed know what she is doing.
Looking over to the runes on Kyden's paper, he nods "Like I said earlier if you do indeed want to research runes, I would advise someone being nearby who knows about Runes, like myself or maybe your Head of House." he said then turned to Archer "The world has several different Runic Alphabet, examples are the one you see which is Anglo Saxon, feather light would be combining several different runes" he informed Archer with a smile "I would prefer we start with Anglo Saxon since that is how I started, and it is probably the easiest of the runic alphabets to learn." he paused "Unless everyone wants to do either Japanese or Norse to begin?" he chuckled as he forms a rune list in the air

Sitting down in his desk, Kaegen raised his hand to try and get the professor's attention. He had heard that hogwarts was protected with ancient runes. Could he do the same with his fort of sorts? When he was reasonably certain the professor would hear him, the 11 year old ravenclaw shot forth the question.
"What runes would help make a place hard to find, or well protected?"
This may be a shortcut to something the professor might want him to find out on his own, but at least he had a clear goal. He may get pointed in the right direction, or the professor could even just give him the best rune combinations right away. But that last situation was probably just wishful thinking. The other students in the class seemed to be taking notes, writing down the runic alphabet. One girl had been experimenting with them before the professor stopped her. But on the other hand he had looked over to see if she knew what she was doing, was this maybe some kind of test? Should he be experimenting to see if he could find a good combination? If the professor came over, perhaps he could adjust the runes. It made sense in his head, anyway.

"I chose fire and ice because they're the closest to opposites... Ice and fire, know what I mean?" said Aurora, who continued drawing runes in her notebook. "I wanna learn how to use rune magic! I wrote all of the Anglo-Saxon runes down in my book, would you be able to teach me how to combine them safely... maybe give me some of the combinations you use?" Aurora said, and gave him her book to check through to make sure her work was done. She grabbed a piece of spare parchment and drew a bunch of food, colouring in some of them with her different colours of flower inks as she waited for the teacher to read through her list of runes to make sure they were all written and drawn correctly.
She again started drawing shapes like squares with lines inside and out of the corners and sides, making her own sort of runes. Obviously they didn't do anything, but she just thought they looked cool. She had many questions to ask all of the runic studies teachers, and she had many experiments that needed to be done for her to understand things even more than she had before joining this class.

this study session was decidedly going to prove to be an odd one, the assortment of students began proving so readily. Once the teacher began speaking he was interrupted eventually by a particularly strange Ravenclaw.
doing his best to ignore the rest of those present outside of the professor Orion jotted down notes as quickly as his fingers would allow.
The concepts the professor was explaining were fairly simple, in an arcane complicated not simple kind of way. Smiling ruefully to himself as he labored to record the runes he watched the professor out of the corner of his eye.
In essence what he was saying is that runes were like building blocks that each had a different purpose. with that in mind combining said building blocks would allow one to create more complex structures or concepts as it were.
"Professor, I have a q-question, Is there any limit to the amount of runes you c-can combine? Are simpler rune p-patterns more effective or is it just a matter of being limited by one's creativity?"
Readying himself to write down whatever else the professor had to say he pushed his ungainly hair out of his face as he better focused on the teacher, his interest in the subject before him now decidedly peaked.
"also d-does the size of the rune inscription effect it's p-power?"

Don't randomly combine runes. YOU WILL EXPLODE! Archer wrote on his notebook in big, bold letters. So far, it's the only thing he's written on the page other than the poorly copied Anglo-Saxon Runes. But as far as the hufflepuff was concerned, it was also the most important. Looking at the jumble of lines and shapes conjured by the professor, of what Archer could only assume as either Japanese or Norse Runes, Or both? Archer responded, "No siree, not me. I like Anglo-Saxon Runes juuuust fine. In fact, they are my favorite type of ancient runes. None of those other ones for me, thank you very much!"
While listening to the professor, Archer would idly attempt to draw one of the Runes on a spare piece of paper. Not combining them mind you. He liked his limbs where they were. One of the other students asked a question about runes for concealment and protection. Archer's eyes narrowed as he scanned the boy's face, Wait... Was he always here? I could've sworn that desk was empty...Another one, the pink haired girl beside him, asked to be taught some combinations. A sentiment which Archer agreed with wholeheartedly, impatient to try some magic himself. "Yes professor. Can you teach us the combination you used on the roof earlier? I wouldn't mind sleeping under the starry night sky." Archer grinned.
Another kid, a boy that Archer thought he'd seen around the Hufflepuff table asked, some good questions. Great questions in fact. Why can't I think of questions like that? I'd look so smart in front of the others! Quick, think of something to ask! The young Hufflepuff closed his eyes and racked his brain painfully until... "Professor! Do we have to maintain runes? Or is it a cast and forget kind of deal?" Ha! Try that one on for a size...The boy thought proudly, a self-satisfied grin on his face.

Magnus looked over to Kaegen to answer his question "A Rune combination to make a place hard to find?" He repeated the question "Depending on the rune combination, you can cloak a place but you would need to make runes circle around the area, I shouldn't reveal which of the runes you would use so I don't get blamed for starting a prank war" he chuckled softly after saying this.
Walking over to Aurora, he checked the book she handed him and looks over it "Not bad..just don't start making your own until atleast 3rd year or if you have myself or your Head of House nearby to assist" He informs Aurora as well as the class once again.
Hearing Orion's question, he smiles at the boy "Correct, I will say the normal amount of runes combinations are around three or four, I have seen five runes but the likelyhood of them exploded are high." he informs Orion "But yes good question, two points to Hufflepuff for asking a good question."
Hearing Archer he grins "And two more points for Hufflepuff, you will need to maintain the rune every few hours depending on the amount of magic you put into it."
He nods stepping toward his desk "Alright by using the chart on the board, make a rune on your parchment for Ice Water, the student who does will receive their house five points"

"ice water"
He could do that, it wasn't even that hard, he could think of runes that were cold, Hail, Ice from the sky, that would be the top of his rune, To the right side he would inscribe Lake, a source of water, to the left he would inscribe the simple line, "ice" and at the bottom he would hold in in the rune for chalice. Told hold the water in place.
With his runes he created he grinned, Inscribing the runes in his notebook quickly he raised his hand hoping to to be the first one the teacher noticed excited to prove his worth to the teacher, he was a muggle born but he could be just as good as any pureblood and he was ready to prove it.
"Professor I believe i've figured it out would you min looking over the rune I've made I do believe that this one works."
He had a bit of a goofy grin on his face pleased with his success he wasn't the most confident but he felt like it was a class like this that he felt he could excel in. The fact that it was an advanced subject that not even the Purebloods would know.

Before he got started, something had bugged him about the professor's answer. If runes had to maintained every couple hours, then who maintained the hogwarts runes? He couldn't think of anyone that would be in charge of doing that, except maybe the headmaster.
"Who maintains the hogwarts runes?"
And if they forgot, would the ancient runes simply dispel? Would hogwarts be left vulnerable?
Straying from that line of thought, back to the task at hand, Kaegen considered his options. He could try and make a complicated rune, but honestly for ice water, it was probably as simple as that. There wasn't any need to overthink it. Hail was probably more violent, less just icy water. He didn't see a cold, or a night. Either one of those would make sense. The chalice was interesting, but he didn't need to keep the ice water contained. It might just contain icy water, and then where would he be?
He silently groaned to himself. It would make sense if it was just lake and ice, or was that too easy? Should there be a modifier? Something to bring ice and lake together?
There was no point, the runes were too cryptic and he didn't know enough about them. In theory, ice and fire might make cold water if he had a little fire symbol and a big ice. Would lake+ice just equal ice? Forgoing further thinking into the matter, Kaegen decided on a decent guess.

Aurora, who had no idea what to do, glanced over towards Orion's work, and copied it down using her black ink and blue gemstone inks, one which was lighter by being watered down. After copying his work, she actually grasped an understanding of how things actually fit together. Even though Orion's house- Hufflepuff -already got the 5 points, she still wanted to have the work done to put in her study notes. She still didn't understand why she couldn't use a pen or pencil in these classes, but she didn't mind showing off fancy inks her mother had bought her specifically for the school.
She had noticed how they fit into a square and how they actually were related to each other, how the chalice fit to the water and ice. By the way they had connected, she assumed that it would be used for freezing water that was in some form of container, and above had the rune for hail, which was hard, frozen rain. Aurora found this interesting because it shows how runes are linked because of the way they are in unity together. "Unified runes work well together... does that mean chaotic runes have chaos between them?" she thought.
