A Different Face in My Head
How Margo was supposed to focus on anything but Slava with his dark chocolate stare fixed on her face she didn't know. She stared back, the lighthearted smile slipping from her lips and transforming into something a little rawer. A strange fluttering started in her stomach. Dang. She knew it was a bad idea to eat that rare burger last night. In Aviemore they liked their meat fully cooked, thank you very much.
Still not quite able to grasp hold of her usual cheeky grin, Margo winked at Slava. "Why of course I'm confident around you. It's just a little different because you understand the arrogance card. Makes things more real, I guess."
Great, and now she was being honest. What was this boy doing to her?
Margo decided she wasn't yet ready to answer that question. Luckily, Slava chose that moment to change the subject.
"A handshake!" Margo gasped. It had been so long since she'd had the chance to grab someone's hand and proudly state that they both knew how to do something together that nobody else was aware of. And with Slava, well, she could only imagine how unique their handshake would end up being. She just hoped he didn't try and make her do a backflip in the middle.
Who was she kidding? Margo was giddy with excitement. She'd missed Slava in the last... day they hadn't seen each other. And especially the past half hour when she hadn't been sure where their relationship stood. The light feeling of relief was still filling her up from when he'd finally grinned at her again and she'd known that they were alright. Everything was going well. She almost sighed with happiness. But-
"Wait." Margo's excitement stuttered as she realised that handshakes might actually be different in Russia. After all, who was she to make assumptions? Margo opened her mouth rather hesitantly to speak. "This is just for us, right? We're not sharing it with anyone else?
Praying to Merlin that Slava would agree, she wracked her brains for an exciting move for their handshake. "Here." She grabbed Slava's hand and aligned his index finger and thumb with her own, forming a cross with their fingers gently brushing against each other. "This shows what an unbeatable duo we are."
And how our laughter will touch the stars forever. Added a wishful little voice in her head. Their combined fingers did form a cross, it was true. But along with the curve that connected their thumbs to the rest of their hands, it looked suspiciously like an infinity sign.
Margo's happy grin finally reemerged full force, with nose scrunching up a little and her dazzling smile on full display. She snickered. "And forget what I said before, by the way. Our pranking reign is far from over."
