Frantically wiping her forehead and searching for a shady tree, Cricket had somewhat heard what the boy had said. “There’s about a million trees surrounding the castle, I’m sure they’ll allow you to sit under one of them.” He shrugged his shoulders and headed for a tall tree, similar to the one near the Great Lake. Starkey got a head start but Cricket wandered behind. As they were headed towards their destination, the young lion decided to take off her sweatshirt, revealing a black shirt with a small skull near the right side of her chest.

“My full name's Wyatt Starkey... but I think you knew that,” said the boy as the two kids got in a comfortable position under the tree. Cricket tilted her head to the side and looked at the boy. He doesn't really look like a Wyatt, she thought. The Gryffindor leaned her back up against the trunk of the tree and curled one of her legs up to her chest and gripped an arm tightly around it. The one day I didn't wear a cap was the day I needed it.

“You don't want any more accidents?” Wyatt had asked with one eyebrow raised. Cricket snapped out of her train of thought but couldn't decide between telling the truth, or telling a lie. She decided to tell the truth since she already wasn't very truthful when she slapped him, and because he saw Cricket cry the blood red tears only a Dhampir could produce.

"I actually didn't know your first name was Wyatt, I've usually just heard your last name before, but yes, I've had two accidents in the sun before since I was out too long. They weren't that bad but they did leave a scar," she replied, pulling up the sleeve of her shirt to show Wyatt her scar. The lion decided not to show him the scar on her stomach from her retched trip to California. "I'm assuming you know I'm a Dhampir, and if you didn't, I guess you do now. If you don't mind me asking, are you special in any way?

"If you don't mind me asking, are you special in any way?"

She was bound to ask, so the question didn’t bother him. It never did, or at least it never had to. No-one ever asked him that, mostly because a lot of the kids at Hogwarts don’t interact with Wyatt unless they’re calling him names or chasing him into the Great Lake. He lied so believably and so naturally it was almost terrifying. “No. Unfortunately, I’m only a wizard,” he drawled. If he meant it, it could have been funny to him. Imagine asking a wizard if they had anything else special about them. Like being able to do magic isn’t enough.

One of the things his mother warned him before sending him to Hogwarts was his ability. What she told him was that people don’t associate parselmouths with anything good, and if everyone knew about it, he might be talked of as the next Dark Lord or something like that. Wyatt didn’t mind having that reputation. He wasn’t a very powerful wizard, only being a first-year half-blood who grew up in the muggle world. But being known as the most dangerous wizard at Hogwarts would’ve sent even the kids who chase him around running.

Still, Wyatt didn’t pull the snake-speaker card. If his mother told him not to do something, it was going to be for a reason. She was his idol. The lady worked about a million jobs to put food on the table, even before Wyatt’s dad left. The man couldn’t hold a job to save his life. He’d keep on showing up late, or drunk, or both. Then, he’d go home and throw a fit, which usually involved Wyatt getting punched in the face, or slapped, or pushed around. After getting knifed for the 5th time, earning him a scar from his collar bone to just below his right shoulder, he began hiding in the attic when his father came home. The man barely noticed his son was gone.

No one had ever seen that scar before, not even the man who inflicted it. It could easily be hidden under Wyatt’s shirt. “Have you always known you were a dhampir?”

Cricket chuckled slightly at his ‘only a wizard’ comment. Maybe this Wyatt Starkey wasn’t some lowly, good-for-nothing, mean, cruel, intimidating, (she could go on and on about terrible adjectives she has heard people say as they described the boy,) Slytherin bloke. Maybe Wyatt was an interesting person under the hard exterior. Stranger things have happened, haven’t they? It made Cricket think a little harder about this boy, the Slytherin that she’d written off as a two-dimensional villain.

Had he been lying about his lack of abilities? Had he been protecting his reputation? Like he whispered his “thank you” earlier? Stop thinking like that, Cricket! She shook her head, trying to rid her brain of the negative thought that Wyatt was some unforgiving liar. That’s not what her father taught her to think of people. You know Crick, he’d said. I believe man is good. It is important to see the good in people. Even if they can’t see it in themselves. Cricket thought her father was a smart man. She looked up to him a great deal.

As she wiped away what remained of her blood red tears, Wyatt asked, “Have you always known you were a Dhampir?” It was an odd question at first glance. How could you not notice your ability? But, maybe Sparkey (fun nickname, huh) had a point. Sometimes, your parents hid things from you. Like the tooth fairy, for example. Or Santa Claus. Or even the Easter Bunny, which was one of Cricket's greatest fears. All this thinking about lying… she couldn’t help but notice: parents sure do lie a lot.

“Well, my father is a Dhampir as well. He found it was much easier to tell me when I was young than to dance around it and have me figure it out myself…I guess.” As outgoing as she tried to be, Cricket didn’t like to talk that long. She wasn’t used to it. Usually, she’d tag on an ‘I guess’ at the end. She thought it made her sound less like a know it all, or whatever rude name she'd call herself in her mind. If only people could hear the things I think, she thought. They’d think I’m crazy. Perhaps even crazier than they already think I am. The boy's emotionless face slightly shifted, as Cricket felt that he would take the next word.

“Well, my father is a Dhampir as well. He found it was much easier to tell me when I was young than to dance around it and have me figure it out myself… I guess.”

That made sense. Someone in the family had to be a vampire or a dhampir for Cricket to be a dhampir. The way Cricket spoke about her father, though, it seemed like she really respected him. It also sounded like she was proud of her ability, but she wouldn’t have brought it up unless she was provoked. At least they had something in common- sort of. They didn’t like talking about what made them special.

But, with a ukulele on her back, the girl seemed to have no issue with standing out. Was she trying to stand of for the image, like Wyatt blending in for his image? Or was she just outgoing and friendly all the time, without reason? Wyatt didn’t know a Gryffindor could be that nice, or genuine, or genuinely nice, but at the same time, she was the girl who’d slapped him across the face.

It was at that exact moment Wyatt knew he would give everything he owned to know what was going on in her head. It was just one of those times. It wasn’t often that someone would make him feel that way. There were a lot of interesting children at this school, with intriguing backstories just waiting to be shared, but never had Wyatt been so interested in another student before now.

“So you play the ukulele? And… bring it around with you wherever you go?” Wyatt raised an eyebrow.
