A Dangerous Discovery
His expression changed, when she told him what Selim did, showed the guilt that she didn't want him to feel. "Flash..." What was she to tell him? That he couldn't have done anything? Sure he could have, if he had been awake. But he had not. She didn't ask of him to look out for her, that was something he chose. And she knew, that it was the only reason why she didn't blame him at least a little, no matter how much she hated herself for feeling this way. "It was an eventful night and you were asleep. It is not your fault.", she decided to say, looking at her best friend. She wanted to hug him, take some of the pain away she caused him. Opeila was by now beyond the point of blaming herself, by now she just wanted to ease it for him. She couldn't get involved without hurting him, the perks of having people that cared for her. The pain was shared.
Flash rubbed his face and hair with his hands, a move that looked... helpless. Opeila swallowed. She could feel the helplessness as well, it was locked inside, tightening her chest, unsuccessfully looking for a way out. Keeping her awake at night. This was the selfish reason why she offered herself for Selim to run tests on. She needed to do something, something that gave her meaning. And something that was helpful. Flash thanked her for telling him.
When she described the pain, he took her hand.
Opeila froze for a moment and looked at their hands, barely hearing what he said. She nodded a little when he mentioned the research. When had she held someone's hands the last time? The memories of the experiment were a sort of painful blur, she wasn't sure what had happened in the room of requirement. When had she hugged someone the last time? It had been some time for sure and suddenly that was all Opeila wanted. A weird sound escaped her, when she made a step forward and pulled Flash into a hug, this time not hesitating. He would be able to feel her tremble. She buried her face in his shoulder, hoping he wouldn't push her away. Hide me please. Just for one moment...

A Dangerous Discovery
Instead of being able to say anything, what ended up happening was a silent embrace. Once again, Flash had the choice to tell her to stop, to scream at her for being so stupid, but he didn't. Wasn't he... terrible? He wrapped his arms around her tightly, remembering all the times that were just like this one. In the hospital bed, when she feared what it meant to have the curse inside her, or by the lake when she feared she drove everyone close to her away. All he could do was hold onto her tightly, if it did indeed accomplish anything at all. Minor relief.
That's what he was, he realized. He had started to question how healthy his relationship with Opeila really was. They had met quite normally, two students talking casually about this and that. Flash used her, she used him. She was a fountain of information, someone who took risks no one in their right mind would for even the tiniest scrap of information, and he encouraged it. For her, he never scolded her too harshly, was never too dissappointed or ashamed. He wouldn't leave her side, no matter what she did, and he would hold her no matter how she treated him. No matter who told him he shouldn't.
Well, if it made him terrible, then he was terrible. If they were able to find a cure, wouldn't it be worth it? Was he honestly allowed to make that decision, even if she agreed? Wasn't he supposed to be the responsible, clear-headed one? Well, better to just push forward. He would have to have a talk with Selim.
