Ileen made a loud noise between laughing and snorting. “Well, fair enough. It was kind of funny.” She shook her head and a few splashes of paint mixed with glitter flew through the air, some of which hit Dee in the face. The young Slytherin grinned cunningly. She looked at the balloon and the paint splashes on Dee’s face. “Now we match.
If she was completely honest, she had enjoyed it. But only a bit – she still preferred to be slightly grumpy. But Dee knew her. Her best friend had already noticed that the corners of Ileen's mouth twitched and her eyes gleamed in delight. Once again, Ileen realized how much she loved Dee. With her around, it was always chaotic, but also fun and… easier to be herself, because she knew Dee would see the true Ileen in her actions and words.

When Dee told her about her encounter with the hero guy, she laughed. Her laughter was as bright as a bell and just as cheerful - a sound rarely heard from her and usually only when Dee was there. “I can imagine that.” With a mocking but loving "Tz tz" she nudged her friend’s side. “You are always so clumsy, aren’t you?” She shook her head with exaggerated disapproval. Then she smiled. “Yeah, I bet he was delighted.” With a wrinkled forehead she reflected on how she had perceived him at her first encounter. Well, she really didn't know much about her classmates, but since most of the Slytherins were a bit odd, she could well imagine that this had been a tricky situation for her. Pff. Childish. “And yes, I guess I was a perfect human paint stamp. And human shield. Any time!” Her tone was resigned. “As a Knight I can’t let you fight your battles alone, can I?

Ileen chuckled and turned once around herself to absorb the scenery. “There's always room for more decoration – sounds like a motto for you.” She got an idea and the young Slytherin pointed to the floor. “We could just lie down and make human stamp marks. Like in these creepy muggle crime movies. What do you think?
Before her friend could answer, they were interrupted very rudely by... hero guy! Ileen’s eyes widened since she was facing the entrance and saw him first. But she had no time for a warning.
He jumped in, aimed with a bucket of green paint for Dee and hit her back, glancing in triumph at the two girls. What the heck? Had he really carried that all the way back here because of some glitter? What was wrong with these Slytherins?
There was an awkward moment of silence after he had laughed and watched them, then Ileen started to chuckle and then laugh. “Well, that will make my plan easier,” she said, still giggling, dipping her index finger in the green paint dripping from Dee's robe. Then she thoughtfully examined the color and painted a heart on Dee’s cheek. "Your face was clearly still too clean," she explained with a smirk and turned to the Slytherin.
With two quick steps she was standing in front of him. Swiftly she stretched out her hand and painted a smiley face on his cheek. “Come on, it’s just paint. It won’t kill you. You should smile.” She pointed at the smiley and then quickly dreaw a heart on her own cheek.

Why would Aida prank Boniface’s greenhouses?

Recently Aida Mòrsgor-Ama Ellwood had been reading in the library about her Scottish heritage as an Ellwood. The Ellwoods are a branch of the Elliot family, which is one of the more famous border reiver families known to history. Anyone who knows Scottish history knows that “border reiver” is often synonymous with “hellraiser.” Many border reivers ended up dispossessed of their native territories following pogroms and “pacification,” leading many border reivers to become exiled to northern Ireland in the Plantation of Ulster. After the catastrophic potato famine of the 1840s, very many of these Ulster Scots then emigrated to the US to avoid starvation. However, the Ulster Scots arrived in the US along with their traditions and a bit of reiver mischief still in them, eventually leading to the creation of Halloween from Samhain. In its early days in the US, Halloween was especially driven by pranks from their Scottish and Ulster Scottish originators, eventually leading to the well known phrase “trick or treat.” So you see, the mischief of the border reivers still lives on today… and it was about to see a resurgence in Boniface MacTavish’s greenhouse.

So you see, Aida was hungry for a bit of “historical recreation” in order to celebrate her heritage. It just so happened that certain people were propagating munitions of glitter, pennants, prisms, and so on… and with Aida identifying as non-binary, this was the kind of havoc that she could get behind. Aida had bothered to look up the ancestral territories of the MacTavish clan while she was in the library, and she remembered from class that Boniface was from the Fort Augustus area. Apparently Boniface was a highlander through and through, rather than descendant from border ruffians. However, since Fort Augustus was not far from the Glenfinnan area where she was raised, Aida had always felt a sort of camaraderie with Boniface. Fluent with highlander Scots Gaelic, she had always enjoyed hearing Boniface speak in her native language with an accent that matched hers during class. Honestly it was a bit lonely that no one else around her was speaking Gaelic. Thus, Aida decided that Boniface’s greenhouses were the place in Hogwarts most worth her time… ripe for some “beautification.”

Aida was already familiar with Greenhouse #1 from her classes, but she thought it was about time for an extra challenge for her naturalist studies, and so Aida selected Greenhouse #2 for her target. Her ally in this caper, Prof. Cypresse Lian, had already done the hard part of unlocking the doors. Meanwhile, Aida had loaded up the deep pockets of a long coat with prisms from the library, streamers, and other merry-making materials. Her pockets were not as deep as Prof. Griffith’s once were, but she did her damnedest to imitate them with the basic materials she had available when making the coat from scratch (as she had learned to do on the sheep ranch).

Arriving at Greenhouse #2, Aida tried to peer through the window to get an idea of what was inside – especially if Boniface was inside. However, visibility was poor and she would just have to commit to her “raid.” Creeping in through the unlocked door, Aida tried to walk quietly as she observed the different varieties of plant life all around. An avid naturalist, Aida was a quick study with plants, but honestly there were a lot of things in here she could neither identify nor explain the properties of. It was terribly exciting. She did not want to interfere with the lives of the plants, however, and she had enough sense to try to give them space wherever she could. However, the greenhouse was not going to decorate itself.

Aida liked her clever solutions to simple problems. She was good at tying all kinds of knots from having grown up on the ranch, so she had devised a sort of “auto-lasso” where she could sling a decoration that was attached to a lassoed end that would hook onto a target and close around it. All she needed was something that was poking out and would bear a little of weight on impact. So Aida had strung together a variety of prisms taken from the library stash into a “daisy chain” of crystals that would attach on either end of the chain via lasso ends. Aida got a good look at parts of the building’s structure that had protuberances enough to hang the prism chain, she whirled one end of the cord (made of ultra-clear fishing line) at a hook that looked like it was meant to hold up a heavy plant, but which was currently vacant. It seemed to grab the hook just fine, and so she moved onto the other end of the chain, finding a similar vacant hook on the other end of the greenhouse. It seemed she succeeded at lassoing both ends, and so she stood back and admired her handiwork. With the light streaming in through the glass, the entire greenhouse erupted in a thousand shards of little rainbows, moving with the residual momentum from Aida’s throw. The long line of suncatchers themselves were brilliant in the light.

But was it enough rainbows? Of course not. She also had some especially large suncatchers on suction cups that Aida then pressed up against the glass of the greenhouse.

Then there were the opalescent white-rainbow streamers… Aida threw them so that they would dangle over the arches that structurally held up the greenhouse. They weighed hardly anything at all.

But Aida was not done. Somewhere tucked away in the Ravenclaw common room she had found a long-abandoned feather boa that was beginning to collect dust in a corner. Though she had shown up wearing the feather boa, she decided it was now time to complete the ecosystem by introducing a faunal component to the greenhouse. Aida hung the feather boa over the door so that anyone entering would probably run into some soft feathery wisps on their way inside. The boa was white, but that was fine with Aida. It could be her calling card.

At last, Aida had only one item left in her pockets, a particularly firey little suncatcher that had escaped her hands during the decorating raid. She would find it later when she got back to the dorm, or if she was somehow apprehended and it became otherwise revealed.

Well, the greenhouse was even more beautiful now concluded Aida as she gazed over the glittering rainbows. My work here is done, she thought with satisfaction.

Dee's eyes lit up at Ileen's suggestion. "Ooooh yes!" she agreed enthusiastically, waving her arms up and down. "We could do something like snow angels, but with no snow and a lot of paint, you know what I mean?"
In that instant, with her arms half raised into the air, something cool and liquid hit her back, drenching the tips of her long brown hair and proceeding to run down on her robes. This was accompanied by a very satisfied sounding "Hah!".

Dealla froze for a second, arms still outstretched, then slowly twisted her neck until she was able to see green paint running down her back. For just a moment longer, she was stunned. She'd thought them safe - after he hadn't caught up to them on the way, she had assumed he'd just returned to the Common Room, having decided that a little bit of glitter wasn't worth the effort of following them. Then she burst out laughing, unconstrained and irrepressible, her shoulders shaking under the force of it.
She already knew what she'd see when she turned around, and wasn't disappointed, either - it was guitar boy, of course, still holding the now almost empty bucket of green paint, and staring at her with what seemed like an enormous amount of gratification. How could any one person be so incredibly stubborn - so proud - so completely unable to take a step back when provoked? She knew she had a temper, was stubborn as well, had gotten in trouble for it more than once, but this was on another level.

Dee shook even harder, unable to control her laughter. There were tears forming in the corners of her eyes, and when she raised her hand to point at the boy, she couldn't get the words out, instead only shaking her head as she laughed.
Thankfully, Ileen didn't have the same problem as she did. While the Slytherin girl had also started laughing at the renewed paint attack, she was enough in control of herself to speak and take other actions, all the while Dee was holding her stomach and trying to breathe.
She didn't even try to stop her friend as a heart was drawn onto her cheek, too busy trying to calm down enough to speak, but watching Ileen draw a smiley face onto the entirely stunned looking boy was too much. Dealla broke. Renewed bouts of laughter ripped through her skinny body and she sank down to her knees, tears streaming down her face, unable to breathe, and closed her eyes, giving up. Every move hurt her stomach.

She hadn't expected any of this when she had gotten up this morning, but this was the most she'd laughed in months, and she almost wanted to thank guitar boy for it. Maybe she would, at some point.
But not now. She didn't have the strength or the breath for it.

Percival had expected a larger response from the pair. Dealla was now a dripping green pile, but it seemed like it had barely affected either of them. His face twisted up in a soured look as he wondered exactly why he hadn't caused them any distress. The boy had at least expected Dealla to get upset the girl seemed like a loose cannon. Especially, when he thought back on his poor, defense-less guitar.

Though it seemed like things would not be going in the way he wanted them to. His eyes widened as he watched as Ileen scooped up paint onto one of her fingers. The boy focused turned onto only the finger as he watched her paint a heart on the other girl's cheek. He debated about just throwing the bucket that was now hanging in his right arm by his side.

Percival's eyes widened as he realized she had stepped quickly towards him. "Don't you Da-" he said trying to take a step back to escape. Though he did not react fast enough to avoid her as she painted a smiley face on his cheek. Percival could tell exactly what she painted on his face as the movement on his skin was easy to recognize.

All the fight the boy had instantly left him as he stood in front of Ileen in shock. He was at a completely at a loss for words, and his lips were parted slightly in surprise. The bucket that had been barely dangling in his hands fell off the last finger holding it aloft, and the bucket fell to the ground with a loud clang. Percival had not expected this reaction from the girl, and he didn't know exactly how to react to her being somewhat nice about things.

Percival turned and walked away from the pair a frown clear upon his face. Etched into his face like a sculptor had carved it into marble. The boy's revenge had been dashed, and he was left with more confusion than anger. He chose to ignore Dealla physically. Though the way that Dealla's laugh seemed to echo down the halls. Following him and calling him a coward. It sounded mocking and harsh to his ears. He would have run but he didn't want to appear weaker than he already suspected he looked. Before long the boy disappeared from sight leaving Dealla and Ileen to their own devices.

Ileen was almost disappointed when the Slytherin boy just turned around without any comment and left. Not that she had intended to cause even more drama – but still.
He didn’t smile,” she said with half a smile and turned to her friend who was near suffocation through laughter. “Well, but I guess you laugh enough to cover for the both of you.” Her tone was rather dry and she went back to the young Ravenclaw with a shrug. If Dee went on like this, she would probably really die. “Remember. Breathing is important, okay?” A little worried, she patted her back.

However, Ileen also felt a laugh coming up inside her. It was just too contagious. First the corners of her mouth twitched, then a giggle swelled up inside her and finally she laughed too. It was a bell-like and liberated laugh - a sound that you rarely heard from her.
We - can't both die of laughter - here now. It would be a tragic end to our first year of school.” Only with difficulty did she produce the words, while in the meantime she was also writhing with laughter.
It was not as bad for her as for her friend. After a few minutes she had recovered her composure and looked around, still grinning. “So, let’s get these wonderful paint angels done, shall we?” After a short thought she pressed her own back against Dee’s to get as much of the green color as possible. She felt the paint sucking cold and heavy into her already soaked robe and sighed quietly.
They'd never get those robes clean again. They would probably have to throw them away afterwards. With a splashing sound Ileen sat down on the floor. Her clothes fell heavily onto the floor and already left colored traces. “How does that work? Like that?” When she lay down completely there was a disgusting munching sound. Ileen had to grin and then started to move her arms and legs back and forth like for a snow angel. The poor Professor might be a bit confused when he would see these marks on the floor.

Jumping back onto her feet, Ileen splashed color everywhere. It was in her hair, her eyes, her ears – everywhere. She looked down contentedly at her work and ran her hand through her sticky hair. “Well, we probably should go back inside and have a shower before dinner.
She picked up the empty bucket of green paint and put it in Dee's hand. “Here. It’s a souvenir. Of the day you almost died of laughter.” Then she took her arm to drag her outside. Her lips curled up in a happy smile. What a crazy day. She realized one more time one of the reasons why Dee was an awesome friend. It was fun to be with her. And easy. She always forced Ileen into situations she ended up enjoying.

Dee barely noticed guitar boy leaving, too busy gasping for breath. There were tears clouding her sight and her stomach was violently cramping at this point. Ileen's words didn't really do much to help, and her dissolving into laughter almost threatened to make it worse again instead.
Still, by the time Ileen had managed to recover, Dealla's laughter had calmed down too and she was only shaken by the occasional additional bout of laughter.

She was still sitting on the floor, and standing up proved difficult, her knees weak and jittery from the laughing fit. Very nearly she used her sleeve to wipe the tears of her face, before she realized that it was completely drenched in blue and green paint at this point, and thought better of it. "I love you for painting that smiley on his face," she told Ileen, grinning from one ear to the other. "He does look like he could use a little more fun in his life, doesn't he? But honestly - were you trying to kill me? I think I stopped breathing for over a minute there."
When Ileen decided to press their backs together to get her share of green paint, Dee started giggling again, although her abdominal muscles reminded her with every single giggle that they were not used to such torture and did not appreciate it. "Are you sure that you need more paint?" she asked, amused. "Is there even a single inch on you that wasn't covered in paint so far?"

Dee flopped heavily back down onto the ground when Ileen had decided she was now also sufficiently green, and spread her arms and legs in all directions. "Yep, that's exactly how!" she agreed and started flailing her arms and legs vigorously to make sure that the paint on her back got spread evenly on the floor below her. When she sat up, there was a decent, albeit headless, paint angel where she had lain. With a grin, Dee used the sleeve of her robe to add the outline of a head and add a very skewed smiley face in the middle.
Finally satisfied, she followed Ileen's example, which added another few spatters of green paint on the ground around them, and nodded. "We should."
Ileen's next action, however, took her by surprise: She accepted the bucket by reflex, and then stared at it for a second before snorting and looking up at Ileen. "Just go back to the castle before I decide you are in sore need of a helmet," she replied, placed the bucket carefully on the ground next to the greenhouse door, and followed her friend outside.
