In hindsight, the young badger probably should have expected that Rafa wouldn’t go down without a fight. It only took him mere seconds to recover from her little prank before he put himself in the offense. Her smug expression turned into a face of widened eyes and lips shut tight so she the grimy lake water would stay out of her mouth. The boy’s splash came crashing down, briefly distracting her. Those moments of distraction gave the boy the opportunity to catch her off guard and drag her down just as she did him. An eye for an eye, it seemed.

Once the brief shock dissipated, Maria’s mind finally registered her predicament. A familiar hypoxic burn started in her chest, as the girl wasn’t entirely prepared to dive down when they did. The pressure of the water compressing her chest and the cold temperature didn’t help either. Her pride also felt a slight twinge, the girl not being able to accept that she was currently being dragged through the murky water as she’d done earlier. But she would not let the boy get away with it. Digging her nails into his wrist, she pried his fingers away from her and swam back to land. Coming up at the bank, she lifted her head, took in a big gulp of air and lifted herself up from the water into the ground.

As she lay in the grass, lungs desperate to take in sweet life-giving air, a thousand and one thoughts swirled around in her head, ultimately culminating into one line:
