NB: This is the main thread for the International Women's Day thread. Please refer to the errand description thread for more information, and have fun!
The great hall had always been a good working space, but today Ruthie was determined to make it a great working space. Today was International Women’s Day and Ruthie was keen to take the opportunity to celebrate the wonderful women and girls at Hogwarts. As a female herself, Ruthie had seen that subtle undercurrent of discrimination that women faced. It was not as pronounced in the wizarding world as other forms, like blood status, but it was still there. And she was determined to try and turn back this tide, but it was movement that would take everyone to contribute. That was why she was hosting this errand--to lift up women and girls. She’d garnered the support of her good friend and Gryffindor Prefect, Griseldis Edelhardt, and her Head of House, Professor Alaric Equinox. Both would be here in the Great Hall for the main event, but Ruthie had also invited others to participate in their own ways, on their own terms.

She was excited to see what her peers might make of the day and how they would choose to recognize it. Ruthie walked down the staircase from the Ravenclaw common room in a casual outfit--it was a Sunday--casual, but powerful. Her old blue jeans, white trainers, and a blue beanie were pretty much items she could have been wearing any weekend day, but behind her cardigan was a baby blue t-shirt with the words “What she tackles, she conquers” embroidered across the chest. As a host, she felt it important to set the scene from the moment she walked into the room.

In her hands, she carried a box full of decorative supplies, knowing that Gris was bringing a similar box from the Gryffindor tower. Call it optimism, but they felt confident they would have a strong turn out. After all, based on past errands, it seemed students did indeed like crafting things and being creative. Now, all they had to do was harness that creativity and channel it towards the greater good.

Placing the box on one of the center tables, she gave a quick nod to Professor Equinox to thank him for coming. She regretted that she did not know the Professor terribly well, but he’d always seemed remarkably supportive from that night on the great lake to today. Meanwhile, she gave Gris a wave and a quick hug once she appeared. Together, she took out and arranged the contents of the boxes while waiting for the students to arrive. In addition to crafting materials, at the head of the table they were find some food to nibble on: pumpkin pasties, and cauldron cakes dyed in purple in color as this was the color of International Women's Day as designated by the United Nations. There had also been a special request for pink cupcakes so those joined the magical treats as well. In addition to work--this was an event about celebration, after all.

Once all the students had started trickling in, Ruthie swallowed before addressing them: “Thank you all so much for coming out to celebrate International Women’s Day with us. It’s great to see you all! On the tables just here you’ll notice a menagerie of crafting supplies. Please feel free to use what you’d like or if you’ve brought something of your own you want to decorate, that works as well. There are also some books on the tables about women’s history if you need some inspiration. Let us know if you have any questions and we’re excited to see what you come up with!” When the students sat down at the tables they would find supplies just as she described, not limited to: stock paper in assorted, cardboard, ink, quills, glue, glitter, some remnant fabric as well as a handful of sewing kits. In this way, the students would be welcome to explore their own artistry. And so with a smile, Ruthie sat down at the head of on the tables, wanting to be equal to her peers, and grabbed a piece of paper herself, keen to participate.

When Willow had heard about the event happening in the Great Hall for International Women's Day, she had immediately written down the date and time. She had found herself spending a lot of time with boys recently, which wasn't something she was particularly mad about. But she did miss hanging out with the girls around her. She woke up bright and early to make sure she got in her morning walk with Flash, a drink of tea, and some friendship bracelet making to be done before this event. She made them all various pinks and purples to pay homage to the day, while throwing in some of her regular ones for the girls that didn't like pink.

In the spirit of the occasion, she was wearing a pink shirt that said "Together, We Rise" that she had knotted and tied on the side, shorts with a pink belt that matched the shirt that had a gold "She Persisted" keychain dangling off of one of the belt loops, and yellow chunky sneakers. She had to extra on top of it all and add a pink and white flower crown on top of it all. Her hair was tied up into a ponytail that still reached her mid-back so she could keep her hair out of her face in case it got serious. She honestly didn't really know what to expect at the event, and she really hoped she wasn't under or over dressed for the occasion.

She bounced into the Great Hall, seeing Ruthie that she recognized from her errand in the corridors. 'I wonder if she'll actually stick around this time...' She thought to herself. She also recognized Gris, another prefect that actually organized the errand, as well as Professor Equinox. Otherwise it seemed like she was the first one there. She gave a quick wave at the two prefects and a respectful nod to the professor, she didn't really know how to interact with the professors outside of class. Otherwise, it seemed like she was the first student attendee besides the people who are organizing it, but that didn't discourage her. She quickly took a seat in the middle of the supplies, ideas already rushing around in her head.

Before she got too ahead of herself, she plopped out the friendship bracelets onto the table. She also made a quick sign out of one of the pieces of paper and a quill that said 'Free friendship bracelets! -Willow' She had been giving out a lot lately, but these ones felt different as she made them with women empowerment in mind.

She listened intently to the introduction given by Ruthie, and decided that she wanted to make some cards for the favorite girls in her life, including her mom! She would love to send a card to her mom, the main person that really helped Willow become who she was. 'Maybe I can do one for the Hufflepuff prefect?' She shrugged, and figured she'd start with the one for her mom first. Pulling a pink piece of paper and beginning to draw delicate flowers and ferns on the front as others filtered in.
News of the new errand was spread around the school, at first, Mildred was a tad skeptical of joining another errand especially after her previous ones, perhaps they simply were not for the young Hufflepuff girl. Although, once she had heard that the errand main purpose was for women empowerment- she knew she had to be there. She tried her best to dress for the occasion, throwing on a simple shirt pink shirt with the name of an old band, some simple ripped jeans and she paired it off with a classy jacket -she went off to the great hall.

Her eyes widen at the emptiness of the hall, compared to the previous errands she had attended- they all had been heavily decorated. She shuddered just thinking about the Valentine tea errand, and the mass amounts of pink used. Never again she thought, Although this was for the best- the whole point of the errand was for women empowerment and that alone, She was glad that the hall was not heavily decorated as women empowerment was not something to be glamorized. It was something real and many were burdened by it, Mildred walked towards the hall with a goal in her mind- to make the most of today.

Thinking back everything, she remembered the cries of her father workers, and how they would flood to him complaining that she was not fit to lead the company, simply because she was a female. Their wails were endless and soon annoying. At first, Mildred did not understand why others were so bent up on about her being a female and leading her father's company, although eventually, she learned that the world was not as crystal as it seemed. She has come to miss the pass; snowy days with her parents, and endless amounts of warm drinks. How she would love something like that again, everything soon turned into "Think of what will happen when she's married off" and "oh what about the children? who would take care of them?". Once again, she was too young to understand at first, she thought that they truly wanted the best for her. Although, soon after a lengthy talk between her parents, that was far from the truth.

Her eyes lit up at the sight of crafting materials she had at her disposal- while she wasn't the best at crafting or things involving her hands but she would try her best today. She waved quickly at those running the errands, Ruthie, Griseldis- and Professor Equinox. Although the young girl harbored a deep fear of prefects and those above her, she hoped to change this today. Perhaps, she could make something for the prefects running the event- she would see. Glancing around the hall, it seemed that it was a tad empty however, it was still early in the day. She was sure that more would show up later, upon further inspection she saw a familiar blonde working away. She nearly ran to the table- although stopping her self. Her whole face brighten "Willow!" she smiled at the girl, "It's so nice to see you here today" Wanting to give the girl a hug, she supposed that it would have not been proper since they didn't really know each other that well, although she hoped that would change one day.

Mildred took a quick peek at what the young girl was working on, it appeared she was once again giving her signature- famous bracelets, and making a card? of some sort. she questioned: "Who are you making that for?" She looked once again at the supplies given and began to think about what she should make for the prefects.

Alaric had made sure that he was in the Great Hall earlier than everyone else, wanting to show Gris and Ruthie proper support. Having had grown up in the United States of America, he has seen a women’s group at the campus he used to work at get bullied. He had given them a safe space to work in just as he was now presiding over this group. He wanted to be here in case anyone decided to be disrespectful, and he had a card he wanted to make. He was dressed in a silvery-blue dress shirt, the sleeves were rolled up to just under his elbows. On top of that, he wore a charcoal-colored vest with matching pants. A bronze chain could be seen going from the left side pocket of his vest to the second button from the bottom on his vest. This would no doubt be his signature pocket watch.

He had brought with him to be used for decoration a variety of metallic ink set neatly in tidy rows in a birchwood crate. There was every color of the rainbow and in between plus silver, gold, brass, and copper. These were from his personal collection, but he wanted to help people make their things beautiful in any way that he could. He smiled at Ruthie when she entered and listened intently as she spoke. This was her show, after all, he was just here for support and participation. “Please feel free to help yourselves to the ink I have brought as well.” His voice was like warm velvet when he spoke, and the gaps where his teeth were missing was noticeable when he spoke.

His vermilion eyes took in each girl in turn as he sat down at the table with them. He wanted to feel less intimidating; not only was he the Ravenclaw Head of House now, but he was also a dhampir. Some people had gotten used to him during this year of teaching, but some were still skeptical. He pulled a flat cherrywood case from his pants pocket as he sat and opened it revealing a beautifully handmade black quill. After seeing what Willow had started to draw, he plucked out a spring green ink that would go well with the pink that she had chosen and set it down close to her. “I think if you outline those in this color, it will give them that little extra touch.

It was then that a piece of sage-colored paper caught his eye, so he moved it in front of him. It was Victoria’s favorite color, and it would be perfect for the letter that he wished to write to her. “Does anyone have a particular person in mind that they are honoring today?” He asked, attempting to make an effortless conversation with everyone at the table. “I and honoring the women who raised me.” He hoped by sharing a little part of himself that it would help foster that natural flow of communication between the girls.

She was ecstatic to see a familiar face in the event. She stood up and gave her a quick hug and actually took the moment while she was standing to grab a cupcake and start eating the snack. "Ruthie these are so good! Thank you for bringing them!" She went and sat back down, look at Mildred as she asked a question. "I'm making this for my mom! I've been writing my parents letters but I think she would appreciate something a little bit more crafty. We always did arts and crafts at home so I want to give her something to remind her of that." She looked over as the professor put down an amazing green before her to outline her plants.

"This color is perfect for this! Thank you Professor Equinox." She excitedly dipped her quill into ink, carefully adding the detail to her ongoing card. She looked up and smiled at the professor as he mentioned that he was also making one for someone who raised him. "I'm making one for my mom! And maybe my prefect Dinara..." She looked over at Mildred, someone that she had seen around more and more, "Mildred I might make one for you if you'd let me make one for you." She paused, "I also might make a poster that says what my shirt says with a bunch of plants around it. I really like drawing plants." She smiled, "Professor Equinox, would I be able to use your ink for my other cards as well? I really like this green." She knew that he mentioned that they were free to use the ink if they would like, but she'd rather be more polite than not polite enough and be rude.

Female empowerment. Female empowerment. Female...empowerment? Persephone's lips moved to the words mindlessly, quietly exaggerating different syllables to invite the phrase to make sense. Of course, she hadn’t attended this event completely oblivious to its purpose; upon hearing about its founding the blonde researched the topic to the best of her ability. Apparently, women were an oppressed minority. Decades prior, they hardly had the right to an opinion. Although this concept was odd and unfounded in Persy’s mind, she did suppose this was a good thing for women.

Persephone was female, there was nary a doubt of that, but very rarely (dare she say never) had she felt a victim of maltreatment as a result. The universe bred malice, the trait resided in all organisms, male and female. Even following years of traumatic events, the Slytherin had never pondered to blame this on her gender, rather the instability of others. Perhaps, this had been close-minded of her, had she ever even questioned if the behavior would be replicated with a man? Maybe not, but was this some adaptation of victim blaming? Had she ‘asked for it’ simply by being a girl? Up until this errand surfaced, her mind had never lingered on the concept. Of course, some victims of any variation of assault had done something to deserve their attack, but this wasn’t a quality isolated to girls. Boys would get the same amount of abuse from Persephone as anyone else. Discrimination was favoritism, and favoritism meant there was at least a slight amount of satisfaction around a specific ethnicity/gender/sexuality. No, Persy reviled everyone just the same.

Oh, the things she did for house points.

Adrift in this train of thought, she could’ve wandered off the edge of a cliff if a wall hadn’t jumped in her way. Blinking hard and awakened to the negativity of reality, the snake slipped through the door she’d narrowly missed, greeted by the Great Hall, adorned in crafting supplies and the female specimen. If it wasn’t preposterous, Persy might’ve assumed she’d entered a portal back to kindergarten, images of lettering on the walls and checkered carpets on the floor swimming through her captivated mind. But, those nostalgia-filled ornaments were not present, just boxes of supplies and small snacks to feed one’s creative mind.

Her emerald eyes drifted over to the apparent hostess, a vaguely familiar Ravenclaw girl that was incredibly mirthful to be here. It was astonishing, doubtless, that this concept of persecution that was so foreign to Persephone seemed so familiar to this nameless blonde, radiating confidence and guiding them diligently.

The more the eagle spoke of the event, the farther Persy’s jaw fell to the floor. If it hadn’t been obvious before, their benefaction to the holiday would come in the pointless form of crafts or light reading. Wouldn’t a more impactful contribution be to, perhaps, knock a guy in the nose? Assert some dominance? As respectful as it was to bring women up, if this so-called maltreatment was a real modern issue, it was time to bring the boys down. Holding each other on a high pedestal wouldn’t change the perspective of your everyday misogynist.

In such quick succession to the last few weeks, now was sadly not the time to wrap herself in trouble again. Eyeing all the attendants, bejeweled in female empowering outfits, it was clear that no one she knew well had invited themselves to this God forsaken errand. Good for them. Pulling her uncomfortably pink jacket tighter around her torso, as if barricading from her peers, Persy took a reluctant seat separate from the majority, as if the slight distance would protect her from their toxic influence. Her fingers wrapped around a vial of glitter, twirling it between her fingers and watching it shimmer against the harsh light.

“This… is ridiculous.” And with that statement, she reached for the nearest supply.

Wren had seen a flyer somewhere for a get together on March 8th, to celebrate the women in your life. Wren, in honor of her mother, was going to attend and hopefully make something to send her.

She walked into the great hall, where the event was to take place, wearing a Girl power outfit that her mother had owled her specifically for the occasion. Red was one of her favorite colors so this went pretty well with how she wanted to be portrayed. Red was like the color of outgoingness, or someone who talked a lot, it was bold and made a statement, she loved that about it.

She also loved flowers. That was the reason she decided she was going to write a letter to her mother and draw a couple of flowers on it and hope she likes it. She also decided to write a letter to her best friend back in Texas. Abby, oh Abby. How she missed her. She missed their late night conversations, and the ice cream competitions they used to have. She missed when they would play 'Pie in the Face' and how Wren would always get slapped in the face with whipped cream, and Abby would laugh and how whatever drink she had would come out of her nose. Oh, those were some good times.

She sat down and wrote Abby's note first:

Dear Abby,
How I miss you. Hogwarts is amazing and beautiful but it's not very lively to me without you here. I think of you every day. And I thank God that you encouraged me so, to come here. I've made a couple of good friends not as good as you though, and I have a crush on this girl. She's really pretty. Red long flowy hair and more indescribable beauty. Anyways, I wanted to say thank you for all you have done in my life. Without you I would never be where I am today. Who and what I am today I credit to you 100%. School's hard without you right here next to me but I'm managing ok i think. So, what have you been doing? Write me back soon ok?
Wren sniffed and wiped her nose on the back of her hand. Sometime, while writing the letter, she had started to cry a bit. This day made her a bit homesick because there were so many woman in her life that have empowered her to where she was. She straightened her posture and got back to work adding detail to the rest of her letter.

~WC: 593(first post)~

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When Sean heard about the event happening for International Women's Day on the 8th of March, he knew he had to do something. But what should he do ? He was obviously going to send a letter to his mother but he also wanted to do something for the students at Hogwarts. Problem is he didn't know many or any girls here but had to think of something. He sat at one of the tables and started brainstorming ideas on his journal. After a while he finally knew what he was going to do !

He had decided to make posters highlighting 5 Irish women that had paved the way for others. Sean knew very little of the wizarding world but he knew a lot about the muggle one and thought it could be good to showcase these women to others. Now that he had the idea he had to get some materials to make it come to life. He made his way to the box of materials and took what he needed : Large paper, a quill, colors and a pencil. Once he had all his materials he sat back down where had been and started sketching some ideas on his journal.

He was going to start with Rosemary Smith who had been the first Irish woman to break into the world of professional motor racing. Sean had always admired her determination to be so successful in a sport dominated by men. Her father had thought her how to drive by the age of 11, the age of all first years in Hogwarts. She had inspired Sean to try new things even if it seemed unlikely that he would succeed. He started writing on the first large paper, Sean had very nice hand writing and enjoyed writing with a quill.

Once he finished writing the little bits of information about Rosemary he started decorating. He drew a race car with a woman driving inside, he was a better writer than a drawer but the effort was there, he added a few trophies here and there and the first poster was finished.

It was now time to start the second poster which would be about Celina Barrett who became Ireland's first ever full-time female firefighter. The courage and determination that Celina had to join such a physical and dangerous job had always astonished Sean. Not only that she also encouraged women to do the same and is now one of only two women who hold the title of Chief Fire Officer. He started writing but stopped for a minute to look around at all the other students that were doing there own thing for the event. Sean wasn't used to seeing so many students join something like this, at least not at the school he went to. Most students from his old school would probably just mess around and ruin other kids work. It made Sean happy to see the difference. After his quick loss in thought he finished writing the second poster.

He decided to draw a woman using a fire hose to extinguish a burning house. As he was drawing he could imagine Celina's journey and could only imagine the obstacles that were put in her way. Yet she had succeeded, the thought of that gave Sean hope that he would also succeed with a lot of hard work. Once he finished the poster he put it down with the other one and smiled. It wasn't often that he felt proud of something he did.

International Women's Day.

Lydia had always loved celebrating that day: since she was little, she would go with her mother (and then with her sister as well once she was born) to her grandma's place in London to read about women through history and make cards to then hand out in school. It was a day full of  passion towards making sure that women would feel empowered and important.

The women that were part of Lydia's life had always been strong women: her mother decided to become a doctor, and she would have to face sexism every single day at work, especially from men that wanted a male doctor to visit them because "a hospital is no place for a woman"; her aunt had chosen to become a math teacher, and sometimes her own students wouldn't listen to her as much as they would with the male science teacher; both of her grandmothers had chosen to stay at home and raise their children, often facing critics about how being a stay-at-home mother was not a real job.

Because of all these strong influences in her life, Lydia wanted to keep her tradition alive, she still wanted to make cards with quotes about women and women power and hand them out at Hogwarts.

So when she heard about the event, she knew she had to take part in it.

That morning she decided to wear something simple: she had chosen a pair of black vans, black skinny jeans, a black cardigan and a pink T-shirt underneath it, with the words "Girl Power" written in black ink. In her hair, she had put a pink headband to try and tame her hair, that apparently had chosen that day to be particularly rebelious.

She made her way towards the Great Hall feeling a little anxious; she didn't know if any of the people she knew would have been there, and even if Lydia wasn't shy, she definitely felt intimidated whenever facing a new adventure by herself.

When Lydia walked inside the room she could see that there were already students sitting at the table and chatting friendly with each other. She took a deep breath and started looking for familiar faces, and the more time passed, the more nervous she got, until she spotted a familiar girl.

It was Willow, a fellow Hufflepuff girl that she had met in December when she was building snomen with her friend Aaron.

Lydia felt instantly better and walked toward her.

"Hi Willow!" she greeted the girl cheerfully, a smile on her face as she sat down next to her.

She noticed that Willow had brought her famous friendship bracelets, and Lydia wondered if maybe later she could have gotten one for Aaron.

"Good morning Professor Equinox," Lydia greeted politely the Astronomy professor and then turned toward the other girl that was sitting there, "Hi, I'm Lydia! Nice to meet you!" she said and gave her a warm smile.

When Lydia looked at the big amout of card making supplies on the table, her eyes light up in happiness. The first thing she would have done was making a card for her mother, one for her sister and one for her grandma; then she would have started working on the cards to hand out in the school.

Margo stared dumbfounded into her cluttered wardrobe as, for the first time ever, she had no idea what she was going to wear. It was International Women’s Day... but was she a woman? She would never be ladylike- her mother had assured her of that- and she was definitely a girl, but a woman? There were too many responsibilities and ties linked to that word for it to be related with her. But maybe that was the point, Margo pondered. A woman could be whatever she wanted, and therefore wear whatever she wanted and not care. Somehow, she doubted that many of the girls down in the Great Hall felt the same way. They probably had ideals about decency and fashion... well she would show them what a woman could do.

As she marched towards the gathering, Margo looped her fingers in the belt loops of her jeans and tugged them up. Even though one of her dad’s old shirts was tucked into it they still slid down a little. The soft blue flannel shirt was extremely comfortable and the baggy jeans she’d tucked it into were a dark denim. She wore a pair of old converse and a Holyhead Harpies cap around the wrong way over her messy curls- all just because she’d felt like it. If she wanted to dress like a boy and be a woman, she could, and she wanted every person who celebrated International Women’s Day to know that.

With that in mind Margo continued her quest into the Great hall and looked around. There were only 2 Male Hogwartians present, and if she was honest, she hadn’t expected more. There was still time for people to arrive, however, so she could be proven wrong.

Margo vaguely remembered the host of this gathering being called Ruthie Greer. It was really very fortunate that she’d seen the girl in the corridors or she’d have been in for a spying session. Shame, she loved skulking around. She spotted Ruthie at the head of a table and made her way over.

“Hi there. It’s Ruthie, right? I wanted to thank you for setting up this little gathering and for the generous award of house points that're definitely not the reason why I’m here.” She flashed a toothy grin and deposited a rolled up bit of fabric on the table in front of the girl. She’d let her discover the gift alone. It was a navy blue bandana with the words ‘A woman’ jaggedly embroidered across the front in white and a slightly wonky skateboard off towards the side. Margo was rather proud of the piece of art- she could only hope that it would be put to good use.

Scanning the benches, Margo scoped the room for a bottle of brown paint. She had a very thoughtful gift in mind that fell well within the ‘women’s empowerment’ crafting regulations. This would be for a very empowered woman indeed.

Her eyes fell on a rather neglected bottle near the crowd of people and she started forwards to retrieve it. Leaning over somebody’s shoulder she grabbed it and retreated back, only to realise that it wasn’t a young witches personal space she’d intruded on, but Professor Equinox of Ravenclaw. Her eyes widened slightly, but she quickly masked it. She made it a general rule to cover everything with mischief- something that usually obtained very entertaining results.

“Sorry Professor, I felt bad for the neglected colour, you see.” She held up the paint bottle as explanation. “And this will be for a very special female indeed.” She grinned at the paint as if they shared an important secret. “But a mother should never be underestimated.” Her eyes became a little more serious as she thought of her own loving mother. With a small sigh, she flounced off, her eyes already on her final target.

It was a girl (@Persephone Barret) from her own house who’s name she couldn’t place. She sat slightly apart from the others and did not look to be ‘digging the vibe’.

“Not feeling particularly empowered?” Margo asked her curiously.
