A Chance for Friendship PV Dan Palmer

Oswald was making his way to the library as usual. It was a long day and he wanted nothing more then to sit down in a silent place and read his new book. The library was one of his favorite places in Hogwarts. It stored a seemingly infinite ammount of books and knowledge. How many students have visited this place before him? How many books have been read by them? Is it possible to read all of them? Questions upon questions that would probably left unanswered forever. And altough he would have loved to read ALL of them , he knew that he would probably never make it. The scent of leather , old parchment , ink and wisdom was filling every inch.

He dropped himself on a free chair and grabbed into his bag. In his hand , he would hold a small green book with flower paintings and gold calligraphy on the front ; the title Finding Utopia. He could not wait to dive into it , to forget himself and the world around him while gliding from page to page like on ocean waves. Oswald always lost himself in books , a trait he probably received from spending too much time with his uncle. He really loved to read with him or talk about his adventures , ideas and dreams. It sometimes felled like they were father and son ; something Oswald would have most likely loved. He got slightly sentimental when he thought about their time together , wiping a littel tear drop out of his eyes , but atleast he had his newest book which would give him a sense of feeling home.

Dan padded into the library. He was actually more stressed and needing a distraction than wanting to study.
There was a masquerade mask ball coming up with some place called Ilvermony coming in slated for later. Dan had not heard of such a place, and thought the name was kinda dumb. Point being, he didn't have a date, there was NO girl that he wanted to take, and if he asked Andy....
Dan's face reddened at the thought. No, he wouldn't do that. Andy might think he was weird and not wanna be friends anymore. If that happened, Dan was sure he'd just die. No, he'd have to think of something else.

He walked along what seemed like endless corridors of books, feeling the smooth wood under his bare feet, and deciding what book he wanted to read.
Life of Nimwe? Ugh. Pass.
Oberon and Titania, Fairy Monarchs? Eehh... maybe some other time.
Magical Shoes and Where To Find- Dan stopped reading. He truly did not care.
Adventures of Arnold the Odd... That one sounded nice. Dan pulled it from the bookshelf, and went to sit down.
He found a table, finally, that was mostly unoccupied. There was one boy engrossed in reading, so he sat down across from him, and began to read.

Oswald still sat at the table , his face burried in the book he would held dearly. He absorbed every sentence like a plant absorbs the sun light. Fascinated by every new page , a little smile and a glittering in his eyes could be seen , if one would observe him. He would not notice the boy that sat down across him until a couple minutes have passed.

The boy had skin as pale as porcelaine which created a hard contrast to his earth coloured eyes and black hair that would look messy although not in a bad , dirty way. Oswald wondered in which house the boy belonged. It obviously was not Gryffindor - they tended to be clumsy , loud and mostly babaric (this would explain his hair style on the other hand!) . He observed his clothes and noticed a slytherin patch on his black robe. "Ah , a snake", he wouls think. They were quite an honorable house , intelligent , reserved and misunderstood. Oswald loved Slytherin as it stood for values that he did held in high regards. This made him even more so dislike students which demonized and antagonized Slytherins for simply being Slytherins. His eyes wandered down to the book he held. He had never seen or heared of it. He wanted to ask the boy , but he had no plan how to approach him in a non-weird way. Oswald took all his courage as he began to talk to him. "Excuse me? Ummm....may I ask what you are reading? The title seems pretty interesting." He would notice that this approach might have been a bit too direct. "I-I mean only if you want to of course!"

This author knew exactly what he was doing. Unlike Steven King, who took a dogs age to get the damn story going, this guy hooked the reader almost immediately. Within two pages, Dan was enraptured.

He was brought out of his own little world with the book by the boy speaking to him. An English boy, it seemed. When Dan looked at him, he was surprised to see that he WASN'T Irish with those looks. And from the looks of things, he was actually kind of cu-
Dan clenched his eyes shut, stopping the thought right there. He didn't even know this boy, it was way too early for thoughts like that.
He seemed to be interested in his book. He'd only started reading it, but he loved it. And it seemed like it was a series. He could hardly wait to read more of it.

Upon inspection, he found that this boy was a Hufflepuff. A boy Hufflepuff who's name was not Carson who talked to a Slytherin? But then, that was sort of normal. If he was a Gryffindor, that'd be different. House of blowhards, that one.

He held the book out for the boy to see. "It's fiction.... I like fiction books. Adventures of Arnold the Odd."

Oswald looked at the title as to make sure that the boy told the truth. He noticed the short eyes shutting. He probably had something in his eyes , like a hair. As he saw his face better now , he noticed that the boy looked quite beautiful. His messy hair looked more like a planned chaos , as in the boy intended to mess it up ; it looked quite good. Furthermore he noticed that the boy was speaking with an accent , although he did not know which one exactly.

"Oh ... I also love fiction books.... This one sounds cool...I mean I-I never read it , b-but I guess it is cool?" He begins to feel a bit... he could not quite say how. Something about the boy's aura was weird, but in a good way. "I also like other things...like...", he was not really sure if he could say it. He felled a bit embarassed since most boys , especially not in his age , did not share this kind of interest. "....umm what would you say if....a person would like umm...poetry?" His face would turn slightly red. His dad has always told him that poetry is not for "real man" and that he should give up his love for it or otherwise , he will be mocked for it. "You know...just a theoretical question." He placed a hand behind his own head to scratch it ; something that would keep him busy and calm him down a little bit. His honey dyed hair moved a bit as he did so.

Dan smiled. It was always nice to find someone else who liked fiction. All his mates back in Dingle did. In fact, they'd bonded pretty well over the Artemis Fowl series.
Then the boy asked what he would think if someone liked poetry. Dan himself was no poet. Ireland may have been full of poets over the years, but Dan was definitely not one of them. At least he was pretty sure he wasn't; he'd never actually tried it seriously before. That didn't mean he didn't like it, poetry was a beautiful thing. Just not something he thought he was good at. But, he saw no problem with people liking it. Hell, some of the most famous people in history were poets and playwrights.

"If someone likes poetry, then good fer them. Its a beautiful thing, stringin' words along like that. Like paintin' a picture with words, it is. I actually quite like it myself. Jus', I don't know if I'm very good at it. Why, do ye like it?"

He seemed REALLY shy. So was Dan, albeit to a lesser extent, but this boy was stumbling over his words. He sensed there was something going on in his head, but couldn't think of what it might be.

The Slytherin boy smiled at him as he expressed his feelings for fiction. Was it a friendly smile? Was he happy about Oswald's answer or did he laugh at him internally? He was sure that he made himself look like a fool by asking such a question. Oswald was sure that he messed up the conversation. The other boy will surely come up with something mean to mock him , because of his obvious attempt to signal that he loves poetry! He opened his mouth while Oswald made himself mentally ready to flee from the library.

"If someone likes poetry, then good fer them. Its a beautiful thing, stringin' words along like that. Like paintin' a picture with words, it is." He thought he just fantasized for a moment. The boy was describing poetry in a positive way? "I actually quite like it myself. Jus', I don't know if I'm very good at it. Why, do ye like it?"Looks like he did not fantasized. He liked it. Oswald calmed down as he heard his answer. He was so glad that he found someone who might appreciate them as much as him. "Oh I love poetry! It really helps me to forget reality when I need it. I have many books about them , if you ever want to read some! His eyes sparked full of enjoyment and happyness. He took a moment to calm down a bit and noticed that he did not introduce himself , yet. "By the way , I am Oswald , Oswald Vanigton." He holded out his hand and hoped that the Slytherin would shake it.

Dan's hunch was right. The boy DID like it. He used it as an escape from reality, something Dan and his mates did quite often with their 'adventures' and anime and video gaming. Always nice to have an escape. Multiple escapes, if possible.
Dan was quite impressed that this english boy could understand him so well. Most englishmen, in Dan's experience, had issues with understanding Irishmen. But he wasn't complaining, it was a refreshing change.

He also said he had several books on poetry. It wasn't Dan's favorite thing, like it clearly was the boy's, but he loved how passionate he was about it. He could tell how much the boy liked it, his eyes lit up like Christmas Tree stars whenever he talked about it. Dan had similar reactions to when people talked to him about gaming or Quidditch or cooking. Or even anime.

Then he introduced himself. Oswald Vanigton. For a split second, Dan thought he heard Oswald Cobblepot. But of course not, that was a villain in Batman.
Dan took his hand and shook it. "Dan Palmer. A pleasure."

Then, he asked his own question.
"So, what'r you reading?"
Normally, Dan was a bit more shy than this. But he was not complaining.

Dan Palmer , what a lovely name! Oswald had the feeling that he saw it somewhere before , but he did not remember where exactly. He shrugged it off for now and focused on the conversation.

He held the book out for him to see. "It is a non-fiction book which my uncle created. It is called 'Finding Utopia' and is basically a diary he began to write when he went on a pretty long journey around the world. I did not read much of it , yet...but I plan to do so." He took a look at the book for a moment and continued. "He always told me about his cool and weird trips. I bet he would love to see the magic world and I plan to take him with me, on my adventures!" He opened a page and showed it to Dan , revealing the drawing of what seemed to be a flower. "He also made those little sketches whenever he saw something amazing. His eyes would be focused on the flower as he took a deep breath and closed the book.

"Sorry I...I am just speaking of the book. What do you like else? Do you have any hobbies, or clubs which you participate in? He placed an elbow on the table and rested his head on his hand which caused his head to lean slightly on the side.

Wow. Oswald's uncle sounded awesome. Dan decided that he might do just that when he decides to explore the wizarding world outside of Hogwarts.
He then realized that most things were probably discovered already, but he didn't care.
Then, Oswald asked about his own interests and hobbies. Dan smiled. He was more than happy to talk about those.

"Well, Im a gamer. Me n' my mates back home all are. I like all kinds except sports games. But I'm really fond of adventure RPGs. I LOVE exploring, both in game and even more in real life. That's what makes Oblivion and Skyrim and Breath of the Wild some of my favorites. My all time favorite series is Legend of Zelda, and my favorite games include the ones I just mentioned, and Persona 5. I got more, but we'd be here a while if I listed them... But the woods in Dingle, while still fun to explore, we know like the backs of our hands. But bein' in THIS place, this giant castle in a world I'd never seen or heard of before last year... I've not been happier.
I...also like anime. Most kinds, not all action. But those romance anime are kinda.... eh.
Oh, yeah. I'm also in the Dueling Club. And I'm Captain of the Slytherin Quidditch Team. I play Seeker. I LOVE Quidditch. Kenmare Kestrals all the way. What about you? You got any other hobbies?
